• Posting to Facebook Page using C# SDK from "offline" app

  If you want to post to a facebook page using the Facebook Graph API and the Facebook C# SDK, from an "offline" app, there's a few steps you should be aware of. First, you need to get an access token that your windows service or app can permanently use. You can get this by visiting the following url (all on one line), replacing [ApiKey] with your applications Facebook API key. http://www.facebook.com/login.php?api_key=[ApiKey]&connect_display=popup&v=1.0 &next=http://www.facebook.com/connect/login_success.html&cancel_url=http://www.facebook.com/connect/login_failure.html &fbconnect=true&return_session=true&req_perms=publish_stream,offline_access,manage_pages&return_session=1 &sdk=joey&session_version=3 In the parameters of the URL you get redirected to, this will give you an access key. Note however, that this only gives you an access key to post to your own profile page. Next, you need to get a separate access key to post to the specific page you want to access. To do this, go to https://graph.facebook.com/[YourUserId]/accounts?access_token=[AccessTokenFromAbove] You can find your user id in the URL when you click on your profile image. On this page, you will then see a list of page IDs and corresponding access tokens for each facebook page. • Manage Sending 2010 Documents to the Web with Office Upload Center

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • LinkedIn Woopsie with the Outlook 2010 Social Media Connector

  I have always used the LinkedIn toolbar for Outlook to sort out, upload and sync my contacts. Because of this I have over 2000 contacts in my contacts list that I sync with my phone, Plaxo, live, Google and others. I got a surprise the other day when my LinkedIn account was suspended and I was unable to login.   Figure: Bad, account suspended   So I contacted LinkedIn customer services to find out what the problem is, and here is the response: Dear Martin, We have recently noticed a large number of page searches and profile views through your LinkedIn account. We are aware that you may be using an automated or manual process to systematically view LinkedIn web pages. The information within LinkedIn is provided by our users for usage on the site only. In order to protect user privacy, our User Agreement prohibits using: 1. Automated or manual means to view an excessively high number of profiles or mini-profiles. 2. Automated means to run searches to collect or store data obtained from our site. We have placed a restriction on your account until you agree to stop using these or similar methods to view pages on LinkedIn. We look forward to your reply to discuss this further. • How to get search engines to properly index an ajax driven search page

  I have an ajax-driven search page that will allow users to search through a large collection of records. Each search result points to index.php?id=xyz (where xyz is the id of the record). The initial view does not have any records listed, and there is no interface that allows you to browse through all records. You can only conduct a search. How do I build the page so that spiders can crawl each record? Or is there another way (outside of this specific search page) that will allow me to point spiders to a list of all records. FYI, the collection is rather large, so dumping links to every record in a single request is not a workable solution. Outputting the records must be done in multiple requests. Each record can be viewed via a single page (eg "record.php?id=xyz"). I would like all the records indexed without anything indexed from the sitemap that shows where the records exist, for example: <a href="/result.php?id=record1">Record 1</a> <a href="/result.php?id=record2">Record 2</a> <a href="/result.php?id=record3">Record 3</a> <a href="/seo.php?page=2">next</a> Assuming this is the correct approach, I have these questions: How would the search engines find the crawl page? • Idea of an algorithm to detect a website's navigation structure?

  Currently I am in the process of developing an importer of any existing, arbitrary (static) HTML website into the upcoming release of our CMS. While the downloading the files is solved successfully, I'm pulling my hair off when it comes to detect a site structure (pages and subpages) purely from the HTML files, without the user specifying additional hints. Basically I want to get a tree like: + Root page 1 + Child page 1 + Child page 2 + Child child page1 + Child page 3 + Root page 2 + Child page 4 + Root page 3 + ... I.e. I want to be able to detect the menu structure from the links inside the pages. This has not to be 100% accurate, but at least I want to achieve more than just a flat list. I thought of looking at multiple pages to see similar areas and identify these as menu areas and parse the links there, but after all I'm not that satisfied with this idea. My question: Can you imagine any algorithm when it comes to detecting such a structure? Update 1: What I'm looking for is not a web spider, but an algorithm do create a logical tree of the relationship of the pages to be able to create pages and subpages inside my CMS when importing them. Update 2: As of Robert's suggestion I'll solve this by starting at the root page, and then simply parse links as you go and treat every link inside a page simply as a child page. Probably I'll recurse not in a deep-first manner but rather in a breadth-first manner to get a more balanced navigation structure.

• Grub doesn't show both Ubuntu installations

  I have a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed as the main OS. The other day I installed Ubuntu-Studio (version 12.04) into another partition on the machine. The installation went great and when the machine booted, the grub menu popped up and I could see the option for Ubuntu Studio and the vanilla Ubuntu OS'. The problem was that this version of grub, installed by the Studio installer, didn't look great and insisted on putting Studio at the top of the list, and therefore as the main OS to boot. I use the standard Ubuntu more often, so I booted into that and ran sudo grub-install dev/sda. That worked OK and now Ubuntu boots as normal. Only problem is that the Grub menu doesn't show up and doesn't give me a chance to choose the other OS. Running sudo os-prober shows that it can find ubuntu studio, it doesn't give me a chance to boot it. Any ideas as to how I can fix this problem? Cheers in advance. EDIT: followed instructions here and saw the boot menu, but the only boot options present were for the standard installation of Ubuntu.

  It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. • Does waterfall require code complete before QA steps in?

  The process used at a certain company consists of: Create a layout according to some designs made in a web page design tool. (CSS, html) Requirements come in with "functional requirements". These consist of 100's of lines of business directions. E.G. Create a Table on page X. Column1 has numeric data. Column1 is the client code. Column2 is a string...etc. Write code to meet all functional requirements. When all code is checked in, send to QA (which is the BA that wrote the requirements) for inspection, bug finds and change requests. Punt back to developer with a list of X bugs and Y change requests. While bug finds or change requests 0 go to step 4. The agile development environments I have worked in allow, if not demand, early QA inspection and early user acceptance. So, pieces of the program can be refined and redefined before the entire application is in place. Not only that, but the process leaves little room for error or people changing their minds. Instead, those "change requests" come in at the last stage when they do the most damage. And being that a bug-fix's cost increases over time, this is a costly way to write code. I am no waterfall expert. As described, is this waterfall being mishandled in some way? How does waterfall address my concerns?

• How are events in games handled?

  In may games that I have played, I have seen events being triggered, such as when you walk into a certain land area while holding a specific object, it will trigger a special creature to spawn. I was wondering, how do games deal with events such as this? Not in a specific game, but in general among games. The first thought I had was that each place has a hard-coded set of events that it will call when something happens there. However, that would be too inefficient to maintain, as when something new is added, that would require modification of every part of the game that would potentially cause the event to be called. Next up, I had the idea of maybe how GUI programming works. In all of the GUI programming I've done, you create a component and a callback function, or a listener. Then, when the user interacts when the button, the callback function is called, allowing you to do something with it. So, I was thinking that in terms of a game, when a land area gets loaded the game loops over a list of all events, creating instances of them and calling public methods to bind them to the current scene. The events themselves then handle what scene it is, and if it is a scene that pertains to the event, will call the public method of the scene to bind the event to an action. Then, when the action takes place, the scene would call all events that are bound to that action. However, I'm sure that's not how games would operate either, as that would require a lot of creating of events all the time. So how to video games handle events, are either of those methods correct, or is it something completely different?

• How do I free up more space in /boot?

  My /boot partition is nearly full and I get a warning every time I reboot my system. I already deleted old kernel packages (linux-headers...), actually I did that to install a newer kernel version that came with the automatic updates. After installing that new version, the partition is nearly full again. So what else can I delete? Are there some other files associated to the old kernel images? • How to work around a possible XNA Game Studio or Windows Phone SDK install failure on Windows 8

  I am not sure if you guys know Aaron Stebner. Aaron works at Microsoft, and has pulled thorns from my side many many times already. His blog is at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner and it is a gold mine of tips and tricks to debug and solve many cryptic issues happening during installation and removal of programs. For example, Aaron taught me how to remove programs that do not appear in the Programs and Features list, amongst many other things. The last nugget I used from Aaron’s blog saved my butt just before a presentation where I had to run both Visual Studio 10 with the Windows Phone SDK, and Visual Studio 11 for WinRT development. Of course this had to be on Windows 8. Unfortunately when you install the Windows Phone SDK on Windows 8, you may (or may not, I saw both scenarios) encounter an issue with XNA, and the installation fails. Unfortunately, even if you don’t use XNA in your apps, this will prevent even normal Windows Phone app development. Fortunately, Aaron has a fix for that. • Writing cross-platforms Types, Interfaces and Classes/Methods in C++

  I'm looking for the best solution to write cross-platform software, aka code that I write and that I have to interface with different libraries and platforms each time. What I consider the easiest part, correct me if I'm wrong, is the definition of new types, all I have to do is to write an hpp file with a list of typedefs, I can keep the same names for each new type across the different platforms so my codebase can be shared without any problem. typedefs also helps me to redefine a better scope for my types in my code. What is the best option to hide the use of the pointers? I would also like some words about macros and how to implement some OS-specifics calls and definitions.

• Downloading specific video renditions in WebCenter Content

  I recently had a question come up on one of my previous blog articles about downloading a specific video rendition.  When accessing image renditions, you simply need to pass in the 'Rendition=<rendition name>' parameter on the GET_FILE service and it will be returned.  But when you try that with videos, you get the error message, "Unable to download '<Content ID>'. The rendition or attachment '<Rendition Name>' could not be found in the list manifest of the revision with internal revision ID '<dID>'. Through the interface, it exposes the ability to download, but utilizes the Content Basket to bundle one or more videos and download them as a zip.   I had never tried this with videos, but thought they had worked the same way.  Well, it turns out you need to pass in an extra parameter in the case of videos.  So if you pass in parameter of 'AuxRenditionType=media', that will allow the GET_FILE service to download the video (e.g. http://server/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_FILE&dID=11012&dDocName=WCCBASE9010812&allowInterrupt=1 &Rendition=QuickTime&AuxRenditionType=media).  And if you haven't seen the David After Dentist video, I'd highly recommend it!

• SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.3 is out!

  This release adds a great new feature and fixes a few bugs. The new feature called Window Content History saves the whole text in all all opened SQL windows every N minutes with the default being 30 minutes. This feature fixes the shortcoming of the Query Execution History which is saved only when the query is run. If you're working on a large script and never execute it, the existing Query Execution History wouldn't save it. By contrast the Window Content History saves everything in a .sql file so you can even open it in your SSMS. The Query Execution History and Window Content History files are correlated by the same directory and file name so when you search through the Query Execution History you get to see the whole saved Window Content History for that query. Because Window Content History saves data in simple searchable .sql files there isn't a special search editor built in. It is turned ON by default but despite the built in optimizations for space minimization, be careful to not let it fill your disk. You can see how it looks in the pictures in the feature list. The fixed bugs are: SSMS 2008 R2 slowness reported by few people. An object explorer context menu bug where it showed multiple SSMS Tools entries and showed wrong entries for a node. A datagrid bug in SQL snippets. Ability to read illegal XML characters from log files. Fixed the upper limit bug of a saved history text to 5 MB. A bug when searching through result sets prevents search. A bug with Text formatting erroring out for certain scripts. A bug with finding servers where it would return null even though servers existed. Run custom scripts objects had a bug where |SchemaName| didn't display the correct table schema for columns. This is fixed. Also |NodeName| and |ObjectName| values now show the same thing.   You can download the new version 1.9.3 here. Enjoy it!
