• Are project managers useful in Scrum?

  There are three roles defined in Scrum: Team, Product Owner and Scrum Master. There is no project manager, instead the project manager job is spread across the three roles. For instance: The Scrum Master: Responsible for the process. Removes impediments. The Product Owner: Manages and prioritizes the list of work to be done to maximize ROI. Represents all interested parties (customers, stakeholders). The Team: Self manage its work by estimating and distributing it among themselves. Responsible for meeting their own commitments. So in Scrum, there is no longer a single person responsible for project success. There is no command-and-control structure in place. That seems to baffle a lot of people, specifically those not used to agile methods, and of course, PM's. I'm really interested in this and what your experiences are, as I think this is one of the things that can make or break a Scrum implementation. Do you agree with Scrum that a project manager is not needed? Do you think such a role is still required? Why?

• In Google webmaster tools, can a "soft 404" be triggered by the text on the page?

  I just ran across an error in Google Webmaster Tools that I have never seen before. I manage the website for my local community band (I play trombone). One of the pages on the site is a list of our upcoming performances. It is powered by a WordPress events plugin that uses a database of upcoming events that are entered through the administration interface. We just finished up our summer and fall concerts and our next performance will be our Christmas concert. I hadn't gotten around to adding that into the website yet, so there are no upcoming events shown on the page. In fact the text on the page says: No upcoming events listed under Performance. Check out past events for this category or view the full calendar. Then in Google Webmaster Tools, this page is showing up as a "soft 404": The page is returning a 200 status and Google is indicating that he 404 is "soft". I wouldn't have expected Googlebot to be as sophisticated to parse that particular sentence. Is Googlebot able to detect that the text on the page indicates that there is currently not content and then treat it as a 404 page because of that? If Google is treating this page as a soft 404 because of the text on the page, does that mean that like regular 404 pages, the page won't show up in search results?

• What is the best strategy for transforming unicode strings into filenames?

  I have a bunch (thousands) of resources in an RDF/XML file. I am writing a certain subset of the resources to files -- one file for each, and I'm using the resource's title property as the file name. However, the titles are every day article, website, and blog post titles, so they contain characters unsafe for a URI (the necessary step for constructing a valid file path). I know of the Jersey UriBuilder but I can't quite get it to work for my needs as I detailed in a different question on SO. Some possibilities I have considered are: Since each resource should also have an associated URL, I could try to use the name of the file on the server. The down side of this is sometimes people don't name their content logically and I think the title of an article better reflects the content that will be in each text file. Construct a white list of valid characters and parse the string myself defining substitutions for unsafe characters. The downside of this is the result could be just as unreadable as the former solution because presumably the content creators went through a similar process when placing the files on their server. Choose a more generic naming scheme, place the title in the text file along with the other attributes, and tell my boss to live with it. So my question here is, what methods work well for dealing with a scenario where you need to construct file names out of strings with potentially unsafe characters? Is there a solution that better fills out my constraints?

  MySQL supports Temporary tables to store the resultsets temporarily for a given connection. Temporary tables are created with the keyword TEMPORARY along with the CREATE TABLE statement. Let us create the temporary table named Temp CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE TEMP (id INT); Now you can find out the column names using DESC command DESC TEMP; The above returns the following result This table can be accessed only for the current connection and it can be used like a permanent table and automatically dropped when the connection is closed. However, you can not find temporary tables using INFORMATION_SCHEMA. TABLES system view. It will only list out the permanent tables. MySQL usually stores the data of temporary tables in memory and processed by Memory Storage engine. But if the data size is too large MySQL automatically converts this to the on – disk table and use MyISAM engine. You can also create a permanent table with the same name of a temporary table in the same connection. However the structure of permanent table is visible only if the temporary table with the same name is dropped. Let us create a permanent table with the same name Temp as below CREATE TABLE TEMP (id INT, names VARCHAR(100)); Now running the following command stills gives you the structure of the temporary table temp created earlier.   I installed Ubuntu 12.04 x64. Orginal Canon drivers are only for 32-bit version. How can I install this printer in 64-bit version ? Arkadius HERE IS SOLUTION I looked for solution some time and finally found it. First I try to do it by adding repository like it is written here: http://www.iheartubuntu.com/2012/02/install-canon-printer-for-ubuntu-linux.html BUT it did NOT work. Printer was installed but every print JOB goes somewhere ( probably to /dev/null :) ) Also installing sudo apt-get install ia32-libs did NOT worked (it was already installed) Finally I found solution. NOTE I did NOT use orginal Canon drivers for 32-bit. I also removed drivers from repository: ppa:michael-gruz/canon I found solution almost at the end of this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1967725&page=10 Most important hint was found in Response #97 "Do NOT install any PPA" I did as follows: Removed all copies of my printer Removed Canon drivers from repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon sudo apt-get remove cnijfilter* Added new repository and installed CUPS for Canon: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:robbiew/cups-bjnp sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cups-bjnp Installed Gutenprint: sudo apt-get install printer-driver-gutenprint Restarted CUPS: sudo restart cups Add myself to group lp: sudo usermod -G lp -a your_user_name Added printer usings steps from link above: Don't install any PPA for the drivers. Click the Cog up in the right-hand corner and select Printers. Turn on the printer and make sure it is connected. When the Printers windows appears, click +Add and wait a few minutes. Your printer should appear within the configuration wizard. Mine did and its an Canon MX330. Click the defaults and continue on. Cups should identify your printer. I saw a few other models in the list. I was able to successfully print a test page afterwards. I hope this will also help someone else. Arkadius .

• Visually stunning maps and PivotViewer

  One of the things about PivotViewer is that it runs in the Silverlight platform and can be extended recently. One of my guys at LobsterPot, Roger Noble, has used this to incorporate a Bing Maps layer, showing items which have  Latitude and Longitude values there. We’re already talking to a hospital about using this to allow them to browse their patient data, including showing the patients on a map according to which bed they’re in. Interesting times – this will involve having custom tiles instead of the ones from Bing Maps, but the idea is similar. Of course, we’ll be using Bing Maps to show where the patients live. I should also mention that this is a work-in-progress still. Figuring out how to use PivotViewer isn’t trivial, and we’ve done quite a lot of experimenting to see how to get things working. If you find bugs, please feel free to let me know (rob_farley at hotmail will usually reach me), and we’ll add them to our list. Here are some screenshots that I made recently using the collection at http://pivot.lobsterpot.com.au/flickr – by selecting a tag, you can get a new bunch of images. A couple of images that were taken in Iceland. Some from St Mary’s Lighthouse near Newcastle, UK. And some from around Big Ben in London. I’d recommend using either Firefox or Internet Explorer if you choose to browse this yourself. It seems the Chrome browser support for Silverlight doesn’t quite handle things as nicely as we’d all like. I imagine that at some point, we may enhance the Flickr collection, to be able to search on more than tags, but as a sample collection, it seems to work quite well.

  System settings/sound does not open, freezes and I have to force close. Speaker symbol with volume control does not open scroll-down menu, and there is no sounds. Many people have problems with Hudson Azalia in Ubuntu, but I found no working solution.   I'm looking for the most efficient / standard way of passing data between client-side Javascript code and C# code behind an ASP.NET application. I've been using the following methods to achieve this but they all feel a bit of a fudge. To pass data from Javascript to the C# code is by setting hidden ASP variables and triggering a postback: <asp:HiddenField ID="RandomList" runat="server" /> function SetDataField(data) { document.getElementById('<%=RandomList.ClientID%>').value = data; } Then in the C# code I collect the list: protected void GetData(object sender, EventArgs e) { var _list = RandomList.value; } Going back the other way I often use either ScriptManager to register a function and pass it data during Page_Load: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "Set","get("Test();",true); or I add attributes to controls before a post back or during the initialization or pre-rendering stages: Btn.Attributes.Add("onclick", "DisplayMessage("Hello");"); These methods have served me well and do the job, but they just dont feel complete. • OCS 2007 Access Edge Server Certificate issue

  We are currently building additional OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Servers to handle additional capacity.  We ran into a SSL certificate issue when we were setting up the servers. Before running the steps to Deploy an Edge Server, we successfully imported our SSL certificate that we use for external access on all of the new servers.  After successfully completing the first three Deploy Edge Server steps one one of the new servers, we started working on Step 4: Configure Certificates for the Edge Server.  After selecting Assign an existing certificate from the common tasks list and clicking Next to select a certificate, there were no certificates listed as shown below.   The first thing we did was to use the Certificates mmc snap-in to review the SSL certificate information.  We noticed in the General tab that Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate and in the Certification Path that the issuer of this certificate could not be found for the SSL certificate that we imported successfully earlier.     While troubleshooting, we learned that we could not access the URL for the certificate’s CRL to download the CRL file due to restrictive firewall rules between the new OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Servers and the Internet. After modifying the firewall rules, we were able to download the CRL file and when we reran Step 4 to assign an existing certificate, the certificate was listed.

• Adding objects to the environment at timed intervals

  I am using an ArrayList to handle objects and at each interval of 120 frames, I am adding a new object of the same type at a random location along the z-axis of 60. The problem is, it doesn't add just 1. It depends on how many are in the list. If I kill the Fox before the time interval when one is supposed to spawn comes, then no Fox will be spawned. If I don't kill any foxes, it grows exponentially. I only want one Fox to be added every 120 frames. This problem never happened before when I created new ones and added them to the environment. Any insights? • Does the "security" repository provides anything not found in the "updates" repository?

  For the limited number of package I looked at (e.g. apache), I found that the package version in the updates repository is always newer than or equal to the version available in the security repository (provided that they exist). This gives me the impression that all security patches posted to the security repository are also posted to the updates repository. If this is true, I can remove all <release_name>-security entries in my apt sources.list and the <release_name>-updates entries will still give me the security patches. This will speed up apt-get update quite a bit. The best documentation I can found regarding the repositories is on the community help page "Important Security Updates (raring-security)". Patches for security vulnerabilities in Ubuntu packages. They are managed by the Ubuntu Security Team and are designed to change the behavior of the package as little as possible -- in fact, the minimum required to resolve the security problem. As a result, they tend to be very low-risk to apply and all users are urged to apply security updates. "Recommended Updates (raring-updates)". Updates for serious bugs in Ubuntu packaging that do not affect the security of the system. However, it does not mention whether the updates repository also includes everything in the security repository. Can anyone confirm (or disconfirm) this?

  We've got a website which has been running for a few years now. One of our customers has just started having an intermittent problem. Looking at our iis6.0 logs the service works correctly when they have a user agent beginning "mozilla/4.0+" but fails when the user agent begins "mozilla/5.0+". The particular customer only started having this problem on Wednesday. Does anyone know the browser/upgrade which changes the 4.0 to 5.0? The actual problem caused is that an "&" in a url parameter list is being encoded as "&amp;". Anyone seen anything similar? We have other users sending from browsers with the 5.0+ user agent without trouble. Sorry about the tags but don't have the rep to create new ones. But whenever I try to compile my project, I get the following error in visual studio Error List: Errors compiling .. ID3DXEffectCompiler: There were no techniques ID3DXEffectCompiler: Compilation failed I already searched on google and found many people with the same problem. • How to configure SoapUI with client certificate authentication

  SoapUI is one of the best free tools around to test web services. Some time ago I was trying to send a soap message towards a SSL web service that was set up for client certificate authentication. I pretty soon got stuck at the “javax.net.ssl.SSLException: HelloRequest followed by an unexpected handshake message” error, but after reading several posts on the internet I solved that issue. It’s not really that complicated after all, but since I could not find a decent place on the internet that explains this scenario in a proper way, here’s a list of steps that you need to do to make it work. Note: this following steps are based on a Windows environment   Step one: Export your certificate (the one that you want to use as the client certificate) using the export wizard with the private key and with all certificates in the certification path: Give it a password (anything you want): And export it as a PFX file to a location somewhere on disk: Step two: Install the newest version of SOAP UI (currently it is 3.6.1) Open the file C:\Program Files\eviware\soapUI-3.6.1\bin\ soapUI-3.6.1.vmoptions and add this line at the bottom: -Dsun.security.ssl.allowUnsafeRenegotiation=true This is needed because of a JAVA security feature in their newest frameworks (For further reading about this issue, read this: http://www.soapui.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4089 and this: http://java.sun.com/javase/javaseforbusiness/docs/TLSReadme.html).   Open SOAPUI and go to preferences>SSL Settings and configure your certificate in the keystore (use the same password as in step one): That should be it. Just create a new project and import the WSDL from the client authenticated SSL webservice: And now you should be able to send soap messages with client certificate authentication. The above steps worked for me, but please drop a note if it does not work for you.

  I am new here. This is my first post on stackoverflow. I am currently a high school student and know how to use Pascal and C/C++ to take part in competitions such as the Informatics in Olympiad. I have learnt data structure and many algorithms to solve various kinds of problems. Now, I want to move on to become a web developer. However, I know web development is quite different from competitive programming. To make a web application, I have to master HTML, Database, Backend programming etc. But these are all look like separate pieces of information. I don't know where to start and what order should I follow. Anybody who can give a comprehensive list of learning points? I know there are HTML, Ruby on Rails, CSS and Javascript. What else?   With the old Windows Start menu, you could add the Control Panel as a menu or a drop-down list. With Windows 8, you can pin the Control Panel to the Start Screen and taskbar but first you need to know where it is. One of the chief complaints about Windows 8 (or any new version of Microsoft’s operating system) is “where did such-and-such go?” With Windows 8, when MS removed the Start button and Start Menu, it threw a lot of people for a loop. Because the Start Menu was like an old familiar hang out; one of those places that no matter how it changed over the years, it was a fairly reliable place to find stuff whether it was your Documents folder, Devices, Printers, the ability to search your programs and files, and of course, the Control Panel.   I've been on Linux for more than 6 months now but never went too much into the CLI (command-line interface or terminal or shell) Now as I ask questions here, get answers, or help from other sites, I learn new commands... How can I can store every new command in a text file? Only new/*unique* commands, not repetitions of the same command. Here's an example: In the terminal, I enter the commands like this- ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command1* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command2* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command3* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command4* ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ *command1* Now, these commands should get saved in a text file say commandrec like this- *command1* *command2* *command3* *command4* NOTE:The last command in the terminal which was again command1 is not recorded/saved again in the text file. And the next time I open the terminal, and enter a new command command 5, it should get appended to the list in commandrec (but if the command was used earlier on some other date, it should still be ignored. For example, command 1 entered again along with command 5 on a new day/time but command1 not recorded as already used) The commandrec file looking something like this- 31/05/12 12:00:00 *command1* *command2* *command3* *command4* 01/06/12 13:00:00 *command 5* (the time and date thing would be great if possible, but okay even if that isn't there) This way, I can have a record of all commands used by me to date. How can this be done?
