  • System Requirements of a write-heavy applications serving hundreds of requests per second

    - by Rolando Cruz
NOTE: I am a self-taught PHP developer who has little to none experience managing web and database servers. I am about to write a web-based attendance system for a very large userbase. I expect around 1000 to 1500 users logged-in at the same time making at least 1 request every 10 seconds or so for a span of 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week. So it's more or less 100 requests per second, or at the very worst 1000 requests in a second (average of 16 concurrent requests? But it could be higher given the short timeframe that users will make these requests. crosses fingers to avoid 100 concurrent requests). I expect two types of transactions, a local (not referring to a local network) and a foreign transaction. local transactions basically download userdata in their locality and cache it for 1 - 2 weeks. Attendance equests will probably be two numeric strings only: userid and eventid. foreign transactions are for attendance of those do not belong in the current locality. This will pass in the following data instead: (numeric) locality_id, (string) full_name. Both requests are done in Ajax so no HTML data included, only JSON. Both type of requests expect at the very least a single numeric response from the server. I think there will be a 50-50 split on the frequency of local and foreign transactions, but there's only a few bytes of difference anyways in the sizes of these transactions. As of this moment the userid may only reach 6 digits and eventid are 4 to 5-digit integers too. I expect my users table to have at least 400k rows, and the event table to have as many as 10k rows, a locality table with at least 1500 rows, and my main attendance table to increase by 400k rows (based on the number of users in the users table) a day for 3 days a week (1.2M rows a week). For me, this sounds big. But is this really that big? Or can this be handled by a single server (not sure about the server specs yet since I'll probably avail of a VPS from ServInt or others)? I tried to read on multiple server setups Heatbeat, DRBD, master-slave setups. But I wonder if they're really necessary. the users table will add around 500 1k rows a week. If this can't be handled by a single server, then if I am to choose a MySQL replication topology, what would be the best setup for this case? Sorry, if I sound vague or the question is too wide. I just don't know what to ask or what do you want to know at this point.

  • How do I burn .img files onto floppy disk?

    - by r0ca
I want to "burn" 3 DOS 6.22 floppy disks. I have 3 .img files but I can't "burn" these .img files onto a floppy. I get the message that the file is too big for the target. What tool can I use (I used one in the past but I don't remember which one...) to "burn" .img file to the floppy disk?

  • Blade servers for vm?

    - by jason clark
We're using VMware on a normal rack mounted server and considering getting another. I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers? • Adding more RAM at different speeds? Will it impact performance as much as to make it worse than without adding it?

    - by user1676874
I got a new laptop with 4GBs of ram, expandable to 8GBs. It has 1 4GB stick DDR3 PC3-12800 at 1600Mhz. I can't seem to find another one exactly the same locally, the closest I've found is 1 4GB stick DDR3 PC3-10600 at 1333Mhz. So my question is, I know they will both run at the slowest speed, so even if I have more available RAM it will become slower. Is the performance loss big enough to make the upgrade not worth the hassle?

  • Web interface to allow users to change their Active Directory password

    - by csexton
I have a few web applications that use Active Directory to authenticate. What I would like to be able to do is provide a simple web page that would allow users to update their AD password. This wasn't a problem when the majority of the users had windows machines that connected to this AD server (and could ctrl-alt-del to change the password), but we are moving away from that and the AD server is mostly for web apps. Is there a simple solution for this, or am I looking at the big LDAP managers?

  • VLC or ffserver for http streaming

    - by Maciek Sawicki
Hi, I don't like asking "OR" questions, but I can't find any comparison on the Internet. I need live http streaming using h264 in flv container. I managed to achieve this with VLC, but with big latency. I have some problems with ffmpeg and I can not make it to work, but I wonder if would it works better then VLC?

  • HTML notes in freemind

    - by asdf
Hi, I wonder if the following things can be done with the HTML notes pane of freemind: Is it possible on the layout view to decrease the separation between lines? The panel is horizontal, is it possible to setup a vertical view? (I have a big, horizontal-like monitor) By the way, when I move the mouse pointer over a node, i can see the HTLM note associated with it, but its view (as a yellow square) only lasts for some seconds. Can it be made permament? Thanks a lot

  • Package managers for Windows

    - by mezei.zoltan
You might be familiar with Ninite. What I'd like to know is if there are good alternatives to that software for Windows. The features I expect: installs the latest version of software supports 64 bit installs where possible strips ads/toolbars/similar stuff provides a way to keep the programs updated after installation if I can add custom installers to the software, that's a big plus. Any ideas if such a program exists?

  • Alternatives to musicbrainz picard -audio-fingerprinting tagging services [closed]

    - by Journeyman Geek
Possible Duplicate: Auto-tagging MP3s I'm currently using musicbranz picard to tag files that don't have any usable tagging information. For some reason, currently none of the files I trying to ID seem to be identified, despite some of them them being artists who are almost certainly on musicbrainz. So, I'm looking for something that uses an alternate database and does the same thing - to identify unknown music files off an audio fingerprint. Windows is preferred, but I would be fine with any of the big 3 OSes (Windows/Linux/OS X).

  • how to configure a dedicated server as a web server using shell?

    - by alhoseany
I need some good tutorials that covers the topic of initial configuration of a dedicated server as a secure powerful and up to date web server. The server will have centos6 and cpanel already installed. And will be hosting wordpress and joomla websites. Security and flexibility is my big concern. I know about how to forge website but i need something more advanced and optimized for wordpress and joomla.

  • Alternative to Canon Printer Software for scanning

    - by Jonathan
I have an Mp980 Canon Printer, which includes a scanner and it came with some software that allows you to scan directly to a PC with out transferring it using USB drive. But the software is big and bulky, and it includes things like printing photo editing and things I can't be bothered with. Are there any smaller alternatives to this software?

    - by holms
Trying to get compile psybnc on NAS. ipkg is default package manager in here. I've installed ncurses already, it's in /opt/lib (libncurses.so) [\w] # ls /opt/lib | grep ncurses libncurses.so libncurses.so.5 libncurses.so.5.7 libncursesw.so libncursesw.so.5 libncursesw.so.5.7 [\w] # file libncurses.so.5.7 libncurses.so.5.7: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, ARM, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, stripped I added this path to /etc/profile [\w] # echo $PATH /bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/opt/bin:/opt/sbin:/opt/lib So trying to make menuconfig gives me this error [\w] # make menuconfig Initializing Menu-Configuration [*] Running Conversion Tool for older psyBNC Data.
