• Java 7 update 6 installation fails on Windows 7 when Chrome is default browser

  I am configuring a brand new Lenovo U410 system with Windows 7 Home Premium for a user. I received the system direct from the shop. As part of the configuration I installed Java using the online installer. This worked correctly. Later, due to a mistake I made, I needed to restore the system to factory default. The factory default FORMATS C:\ and puts back (supposedly) the exact factory configuration. However, after doing this, I was no longer able to install Java successfully using the same method I used before. Now, whenever I attempt to use the online Java installer, the following happens. First of all, a window always appears "Welcome to Java", "Downloading Java Installer...". After short time this window disappears and then one of three things happens: The very first time I do this after doing a factory reset, I get a Windows error report, which contains this information: Application Name: JavaSetup7u5.exe Application Version: 7.0.50.6 Application Timestamp: 4feacd84 Fault Module Name: JavaIC.dll Fault Module Version: 9.9.9.9 Fault Module Timestamp: 4f2343d6 Exception Offset: 000052cb Exception Code: c0000417 Exception Data: 00000000 OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 773c Additional Information 2: 773cd78cf06816f8246f359fa270f3bb Additional Information 3: f51a Additional Information 4: f51aaea7d22f36fa9e3a626b5a5cd1c3 2. Subsequent runs produce either this error message: "Error: Java(TM) installer - Downloaded file C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\fx-runtime.exe is corrupt." or Nothing happens at all. I Believe this is a red herring. Running the installer again causes a different error because the files were downloaded and the installer crashed before it could clean up. This isn't the actual problem, as when this happens the installer deletes the downloaded files, and then when you run it for the third time, it downloads everything again and does the javaic.dll crash. I suspect the downloader is appending to the existing files or something, causing the corruption. I have tried all of the above as Administrator and as a normal user. I have tried reseting the system to factory defaults several times. I have tried downloading with Chrome and Internet Explorer 9. I have tried uninstalling all anti-virus software and disabling the windows firewall entirely. The only thing which makes a difference is running the installer in Windows XP compatibility mode, which allows the installation to complete. I know I can workaround this error by using the offline installer so please don't post that as an answer. I am looking for an explanation of the root cause. Additionally, if I use the offline installer, the updater does not work. The updater also does not work if I install in XP mode. The updater fails because it works by just downloading the newest online setup and running it. Also remember that the installers are digitally signed. The signitures verify correctly so there is no way in hell that this is caused by corrupted downloads. Some theories I have: The Java setup files on java.com actually changed in between the first successful install and my later attempts. Seems unlikely as none of the version numbers have changed. However, I have seen a couple of reports of this error which showed up in the past 24 hours. This looks like the most likely explanation right now: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/1735645 - Oracle released 7 update 6 two days ago. Careful inspection of the installers reveal that they are in fact attempting to download .6, not .5 as the download page claims. Not actually correct. Only the update tool tries to install 7u6. The online installer still tries 7u5. However, 7u6 being released two days ago is too much of a coincidence to ignore. Update: The 7u6 online installer is available from Oracle technetwork. It crashes in exactly the same way. The factory reset software uses GMT-8 and I am on GMT-1. As a result, after factory reset, any software which cares to check would think that the system was restored 7 hours in the future, due to Window's awful policy of storing local time in the system clock. This could be confusing a certificate check or similar. Update: I discovered that this does cause Windows Update to fail. The workaround, setting the clock back before starting factory reset, does not enable Java to install correctly. The factory reset image isn't really the same as what is installed in the main partition when you buy the system. Naughty Lenovo. The installer appears to crash while installing or displaying something to do with the Ask.com toolbar. That seems to be what javaic.dll does. Microsoft Tuesday was the 14th. Some update in that could be causing this. However, I'm factory reseting the machine every time, so unless the patches get slipstreamed into the recovery image, or there is some mechanism by which they get silently installed even if updates are disabled, then I don't see how this can be the cause. Major breakthrough: The default browser on Lenovo systems is Google Chrome. I noticed that the JavaIC.dll "sponsor check" actually does a check on your default browser in order to decide which sponsor ad to display. Normally that would get you the Ask toolbar on IE9. But that toolbar doesn't work on Chrome, and so the installer tries to display a different ad. The different ad is what causes the crash. Changing the default browser to IE9 allows the installer to run correctly. So this looks like a genuine bug in the sponsor ad code in the installer, caused by a combination of Google Chrome default browser and not being in the US. (Installer also checks your location using IP geolocation service and displays different ads based on that.)

• Chrome browser caching

  I do a lot of development on my local machine and would like to start using Chrome, however I cannot seem to do a hard-refresh (ctrl+f5) or any other key combination to get my browser to forcibly refresh all content @ http://localhost. I change projects frequently in IIS and this presents a problem because I see stylesheet and image data from my previous project with no way to get this page to reload without forcibly dumping all cache data from the settings menu. Is there another key combination I am missing, or is there a place I can (on a site by site basis) turn off caching? I prefer not to have to clear out my temporary files in the browser settings as I switch projects frequently. Thanks, Kyle

• Give back full control to a user on a disk from another computer

  I have my friend's hard drive mounted externally. After messing with the permissions with TAKEOWN so I could fix some viruses, I have full control over their drive. The problem is, now it's stuck in a "autochk not found" reboot sequence. I think the problem is that the boot sector is invisible to the drive now. So my question is, How can I use icacls to give back the full ownership, when the user I am giving it to is not on my machine? I ran the TAKEOWN command from my windows 7 laptop, their machine is a windows xp Professional with three partitions, I only altered the one that has the boot sector. • IIS7, different ports for websites but no portnumber in the browser

  I have a windows server 2008 with IIS7 with 4 websites. In DNS I have 4 different URLs which point to the IP of the server. I configured each web site with the site bindings: website1: hostname: url1, port: 80, IP-Adresse: the adress of the server website2: hostname: url2, port: 80, IP-Adresse: the adress of the server The result is, that from the client, I can browse with all the 4 URLs to the specified web sites and everything is fine. Then I changed in IIS the port of the websites, so that website1 now uses port 8080, website2 uses port 8081, and so on. Now I have to use the browser with the url and the portnumber (like URL:8080). Is there a possibility, to configured the websites with different portnumbers but not to use the portnumbers in the browser?

  On Windows I can access files directly from the browser ( or at least I have it configured currently, forget if it was native like this ) with the file:// protocol, so I can access files from say the C drive. I'm wondering what the equivalent would be to accessing my files from the browser, if at all possible on a *nix system such as Debian.

• DansGuardian/Squid Traffic doesn't get back to user

  I've purchased a Squid appliance that I'm attempting to implement, however the lack of documentation has left me a bit high and dry. Forgive me if this is a silly question, but this is my first attempt at implementing Squid. From what I can ascertain from the documentation (or lack thereof), the users connect to DansGuardian first at port 8080 where the filtering is done, at which point it forwards it to the Squid appliance at port 3128. The traffic is then sent to the internet. The setup I have is as follows Gateway (MikroTik router) : 192.168.88.1 Squid/DansGuardian :192.168.88.100 Client : 192.168.88.238 Client --- Gateway --- Proxy --- Internet I have set up a simple NAT rule to forward all traffic from the client machine (for testing purposes) to go to the DansGuardian. The traffic seems to get there, although I see a lot of SYN_RECV w/ a netstat -antp command on the virtual appliance machine. From this I gather that the traffic is NOT being routed back to the client machine. • pgpoolAdmin keeps going straight back to it's login page

  I'm trying to run pgpoolAdmin through nginx - it seems to be working properly, at least initially. I've gone through the initial set-up, which works fine, but now after logging in every link takes me straight back to the login page. It also shows japanese text instead of english, despite picking english in the installation. It seems to me just as if it was unable to save any user data, session information etc. I have javascript/cookies enabled, so it's not that. The ownership of the folder is nginx, and so too is pgmgt.conf.php, so it shouldn't be a problem with permissions. One potential issue is that I can't seem to see any confirmation that php postgresql support is enabled in the php info screen, despite the correct package installed and in the config line. Any ideas as to what's happening here? • Mail to Mailenable group sometimes bounces back because it cannot find one of the group members

  I am using MailEnable Enterprise Edition 6.53. On one of my PostOffices I have a group address set up with 5 members in the group. Under normal circumstances when someone sends a mail to this group then the mail gets successfully forwarded to all 5 members in the group. However, every now and then when a recipient sends to the group they get a bounce back message from us that the mail could not be delivered because one of the user's addresses was not found on the server. This could happen for any one of the 5 users in the group. The error message looks like: Message could not be delivered. Error was: The email address is not available on this system The following recipient(s) could not be reached: [SF:mydomain.com/my_username] What could be causing this and how do I fix it? Obviously the mailbox DOES exist as, under normal circumstances, when someone mails the group the mail gets delivered successfully and forwarded to all group members. All the mailboxes most definitely DO exist on the system. EDIT: I have done more investigation and I see an error in Windows Event Viewer: MailEnable Database Provider error: 0 FAILURE: (SQLDriverConnect), Module: MEIMAPS.exe; Error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired This seems to be related to http://forum.mailenable.com/viewtopic.php?p=53157 and http://www.mailenable.com/kb/content/view.asp?ID=ME020535 but the setups in these links use MySQL as a database whereas we use SQL Server. Maybe this shines some new light on the problem?

• IIS6 Virtual SMTP server isn't coming back up automatically after a system restart

  I've got a virtual server running Win2008 RC2. I've set up IIS6 with a virtual SMTP server on it to be the mail provider for the websites I'm hosting there. It all works great, but if for some reason the server reboots (auto updates are still enabled - I'm trying to make this as little work as possible as we've got a Lot of clients), the IIS6 doesn't restart the SMTP server. The failure causes 500 errors on the current setup, so I'm spending half the day apologising. Any ideas? In Services I've set everything to come back up automatically, but still no dice. As soon as I restart the SMTP, no problems, all the mail gets sent. It's working perfectly, it just won't restart on it's own. I'd really rather not turn auto updates off as we're such a small company I just can't spare the time to be manually updating 15 copies of windows every time MS decide there's a security patch. All advice appreciated! BTW, I am a complete newb to these forums. I searched but couldn't find an answer, so please be nice. But firm. I've got to learn here.

• how to back up data from a machine that keeps hanging

  Hello - I have a storage server running opensolaris. But lately its been acting up - it hangs at random times due to some SCSI/ATA related error messages. I've tried to fix it without any progress, so I'm giving up now. The machine keeps hanging every 30 minutes or 1 hr ...sometimes after 4 hrs. Its very unpredictable. So I've decided to just reformat the storage server and start from scratch...maybe I'll just not use solaris and install something else, since the errors are related to solaris running on ATA HDD or something. Question - Before I reformat it, I want to back up some of the important data on it. Like it has a VM with 200 GB disk files, it has a whole bunch of ISOs stored on it etc etc. I'm using a simple scp to copy the files over to a different machine. My issue is that, because the machine hangs....sometimes my file copy is incomplete and I have to start all over again. Lets say I'm trying to copy a 200GB file which takes like 4 hrs....IF the machine hangs before the whole file i copied over...I have to recopy the file from scratch. Is there a solution to copy the files over such that if the machine hangs or network goes down..the copying can resume from where it left off? - like if 50 GB of a 200GB file was copied and machine hung....next time, it'll just continue to copy rest of the amount, instead of starting all over again. • Lightest Linux Desktop supporting Firefox/graphic browser

  I am on Windows and I have a remote server with Ubuntu 10.10. I want to use Firefox or other graphic browser on that remote server. The problem is, the server's memory is only 512MB, so I can install larger desktop environment. I used to use XFCE and NoMachine NX, but they consume too much memory on that Ubuntu server. The only thing I want to use is a graphic browser (for example firefox) on that server. Nothing else. Do you have any good suggestions? Thanks a lot!

• Desktop PC does not power up on power button

  When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration.   I tried to create a new ftp user via the commandline. But I did something wrong and now I can access the server via FTP but I can't see any files. • Looking for Full Screen Web-Browser in Vizio or Samsung TV's

  I see that Google TV, inside Sony, has a Chrome browser. Is the same thing possible inside Vizio, or Samsung, or any other TV? The 42" Vizio is $499 at Costco, and the Sony with Google TV is $999. We're looking at a buch of these TV's that have build in Wi-Fi, to place around the office as Big Dashboards, and I don't want to have a computer attached to get web content on the screen. It's my understanding that both Samsung Apps, and Vizio Apps, use Yahoo Widgets as their ap engine. Anyone know of a way to get a full screen browser going, without attaching a computer? We thought of attaching an Apple TV, which can be jailbroken, but that is just another piece of equipment to lose, break, etc. Thank you!

  I have a bunch of touchscreen machines that I want to display a webpage on and have users interact with the webpage via the touchscreen. Right now, this is done with a full-blown OS with a browser set to run at startup. I think maybe the ideal solution is to use a Linux-based OS that boots up, starts X, then starts a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or whatever) in full screen mode. What kind of options do I have? I really want to avoid using a full-blown OS like I do now. It looks unprofessional and takes a while to boot up. I was thinking maybe Chrome OS or something, but I wouldn't know how to set it up for my purposes, since it's still designed to be used as a desktop OS instead of a kiosk-type OS.

• Problems using InfraRecorder to back up ISOs of certain CDs

  I've gotten into the habit of backing up my CDs as ISO files, just in case the discs should be damanged, lost, or destroyed. Using InfraRecorder, the process is pretty painless. Unfortunately, I have run into at least two discs that don't back up. I get the error message: Can't read source disc. Retrying from sector 252270 Sometimes this will appear repeatedly. One of the discs is my retail copy of Star Trek: Armada II; the other is disc one of DOOM 3. Both discs run flawlessly when I put them in the drive and let Windows AutoPlay them. Armada II appears as two tracks (one data, one audio) in InfraRecorder, and the error happens at the approximate track boundary. DOOM 3's first disc, however, fails much sooner (around sector 990) and appears as one solid data track. Am I simply using the wrong tools for this job? InfraRecorder is a nice free tool that I can run from my flash drive and use for most tasks of this type, but it does seem to have trouble with certain things. Ideally I'd like to hear about any workarounds people have found for this issue, but if I must switch tools I'm open to it (preferably other free tools).

  My in-laws are having trouble with signing into their Verizon Webmail account at webmail.verizon.net, only when they are on their wireless network. When they try to log in from wireless they get "Error 324" in the browser, in both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8. But they can access any other site, and they can get on their Verizon email when they plug in directly to the browser. Why is this?

• Self-hosted browser-based remote desktop script?

  I need a self-hosted browser based remote desktop script that will connect me from any PC to my work PC. I need to either host this script within my own dedicated hosting or on my work PC. The PC that I need to remote into is always the one PC (Win7) and the IP never changes, and I have access to the Router/Firewall within. I have tried many remote desktop services and applications - LogMeIn, Team Viewer, (Ultra/Tight) VNC, GoToMyPC and iTeleport Connect and even Windows Remote Desktop - and the web services (or ports) are blocked at whatever free wi-fi/hotel/coffee shop I am at. Note that I will need to be able to access this from any PC, so I won't be able to install any applications (or use any portable software) - hence my thinking that it will need to be browser based on a standard (not blocked) port. If I can set up a web based remote desktop application - really a homebrew LogMeIn - then I should solve my problem. What is the best option here?

• Create an AWS AMI for Ubuntu with GUI which automatically launches web browser

  I've got an ubuntu AMI setup with ubuntu desktop installed and Chrome installed and set to boot on load (via the startup programmes menu within the ubuntu desktop) I've created an image of this AMI, but any time I launch a new instance running this, the Ubuntu GUI doesn't seem to load, until I SSH into the machine, enable VNC and then connect via Chicken VNC to the machine. At that point, the desktop appears to load + starts the browser. I really need the machine to boot and the browser to load without having to VNC into the machine.. Any help would be appreciated.

• Tool to organize and arrange various monitoring pages?

  we recently added a MacPro with eight (yes 8) monitors on it. We have various tools for monitoring our website (Chartbeat, Nagios, internal statistics, Jenkins, Smartfox, etc.) and they are currently free-flowing in various browser windows on the various screens. I'd like a better way to organize them into a more fixed system so (a) we can't just accidentally close out of a window (b) some automatically refresh (currently done through browser plugins) etc. Any suggestions?

• Opera12 browser support for WebGL

  I have enabled - enable webGL by entering Enable WebGL in opera:config by setting the value to 1, and Enable Hardware Acceleration similarly, then restart the browser - Opera 12 on Windows & tried to open - http://aleksandarrodic.com/p/jellyfish/. This gives me an alert saying - Your browser failed to initialize WebGL. Please guide me on - What's going wrong? opera:gpu says : Hardware acceleration Disabled Direct3D 10 Backend not supported Could not load library OpenGL Backend not supported Could not load library But,same thing (http://aleksandarrodic.com/p/jellyfish/) works fine on Chrome! • web browser not opening

  I had a virus adware on my desktop. I cleaned it using AVG. Now no browser will open, though the Internet connection is fine. When trying to open any browser I get a dialog box that says it can't find that location. This happens to all my browsers. I even downloaded firefox on my laptop and installed it on the desktop and still get the same response - Windows can't find the location. This all started when opening an email. I'm running Windows Vista
