  • Mac vs. Windows Browser Font Height Rendering Issue

    I'm using a custom font and the @font-face tag. In Windows, everything looks great, regardless of whether it's Firefox, Chrome, or IE. On Mac, it's a different story. For some reason, the Mac font renderer thinks the font is a lot shorter than it is.   • Rendering a Long Document on iPad

    I'm implementing a document viewer with highlighting/annotation capabilities for a custom document format on iPad. The documents are kind of long (100 to 200 pages, if printed on paper) and I've had a hard time finding the right approach. Here are the requirments: 1) Basic rich-text styling: control of left/right margins. Control of font name, size, foreground/background color, and line spacing. Bold, italics, underline, etc. 2) Selection and highlighting of arbitrary text regions (not limited to paragraph boundaries, like in Safari/UIWebView). 3) Customization of the Cut/Copy/Paste popup (what is that thing called anyhow? UIActionBar?) This is one of the essential requirements of the app. My first implementation was based on UIWebView. I just rendered the document as HTML with CSS for text styling. But I couldn't get the kind of text selection behavior I wanted (across paragraph boundaries) and the UIActionBar can't be customized from within UIWebView. So I started working on a javascript approach, faking the device text-selection behavior using JQuery to trap touch events and dynamically modifying the DOM to change the background color of selected regions of text. I built a fake UIActionBar control as a hidden DIV, positioning it and unhiding it whenever there was an active selection region. Not too shabby. The main problem is that it's SLOOOOOOOW. Scrolling through the document is nice and quick, but dynamically changing the DOM is not very snappy. Plus, I couldn't figure out how to recreate the magnifier loupe, so my fake text-selection GUI doesn't look quite the same as the native implementation. Also, I haven't yet implemented the communication bridge between the javascript layer and the objective-c layer (where the rest of the app lives), but it was shaping up to be a huge hassle. So I've been looking at CoreText, but there are precious few examples on the web. I spent a little time with this simple little demo: http://github.com/jonasschnelli/I7CoreTextExample/ It shows how to use CoreText to draw an NSAttributedText string into a UIView. But it has its own problems: It doesn't implement text-selection behavior, and it doesn't present a UIActionBar, so I don't have any idea how to make that happen. And, more importantly, it tries to draw the entire document all at once, with significant performance degradations for long documents. My documents can have thousands of paragraphs, and less than 1% of the document is ever on screen at a time. On the plus side, these documents already contain precise formatting information. I know the exact page-position of every line of text, so I don't need a layout engine. Does anyone know how to implement this sort of view using CoreText? I understand that a full-fledged implementation is overkill for a question like this, but I'm looking for a good CoreText example with a few basic requirements: 1) Precise layout & formatting control (using the formatting metrics and text styles I've already calculated). 2) Arbitrary selection of text. 3) Customization of the UIActionBar. 4) Efficient recycling of resources for off-screen objects. I'd be happy to implement my own recycling when text elements scroll off-screen, but wouldn't that require re-implementing UIScrollView? I'm brand-new to iPhone development, and still getting used to Objective-C, but I've been working in other languages (Java, C#, flex/actionscript, etc) for more than ten years, so I feel confident in my ability to get the work done, if only I had a better feel for the iPhone SDK and the common coding patterns for stuff like this. Is it just me, or does the SDK documentation really suck? Anyhow, thanks for your help!

  • JPanel: both implementing my own paintComponent() and rendering children doesn't work

    I'm extending a JPanel to display a game board, and adding a JEditorPane at the bottom to hold some status text. Unfortunately, the game board renders just fine, but the JEditorPane is just a blank gray area until I highlight the text in it, when it will render whatever text is highlighted (but not the rest). If I'm understanding Swing right, it should work, because super.paintComponent(g) should render the other children (i.e., the JEditorPane).     I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage my controller(s) and models for a particular use case. I'm building a review system where a User may build a review of several distinct types with a Polymorphic Reviewable. Country (has_many reviews & cities) Subdivision/State (optional, sometimes it doesnt exist, also reviewable, has_many cities) City (has places & review) Burrow (optional, also reviewable ex: Brooklyn) Neighborhood (optional & reviewable, ex: williamsburg) Place (belongs to city) I'm also wondering about adding more complexity. I also want to include subdivisions occasionally... ie for the US, I might add Texas or for Germany, Baveria and have it be reviewable as well but not every country has regions and even those that do might never be reviewed. So it's not at all strict. I would like it to as simple and flexible as possible. It'd kinda be nice if the user could just land on one form and select either a city or a country, and then drill down using data from say Foursquare to find a particular place in a city and make a review. I'm really not sure which route I should take? For example, what happens if I have a Country, and a City... and then I decide to add a Burrow? Could I give places tags (ie Williamsburg, Brooklyn) belong_to NY City and the tags belong to NY? Tags are more flexible and optionally explain what areas they might be in, the tags belong to a city, but also have places and be reviewable? So I'm looking for suggestions for anyone who's done something related. Using Rails 3.2, and mongoid.

    I am trying to write a script that will take a dictionary of items, each containing properties of values from 0 - 10, and add the various elements to select which combination of items achieve the desired totals. I also need the script to do this, using only items that have the same "slot" in common.     I have two tables that I need to join... I want to join table1 and table2 on 'id' - however in table two id is not unique. I only want one value returned for table two, and this value represents the sum of a column called 'total_sold' - within a specified date range (say one month).. SELECT ta.id, tb.total_sold as total_sold_this_week FROM table_a as ta LEFT JOIN table_b as tb ON ta.id=tb.id AND tb.date_sold BETWEEN ADDDATE(NOW(),INTERVAL -3 WEEK) AND NOW() this works but does not SUM the rows - only returning one row for each id... how do I get the sum from table b instead of only one row??? Please criticise if format of question could use more work - I can rewrite and provide sample data if required - this is a trivialised version of a much larger problem. -Thanks

So it has pretty big code base and the previous developers knew it well, so extending it is not going to be easy without a thorough understanding of the structure and function. 1) I had begun by trying to tackle small parts of the system and document them with mindmap. (particularly I am trying to document the interactions with external systems) 2) I have the book "code complete", which I am working through. 3) I have pointed some tools like "tattletale" at the code to get some diagrams of dependency relationships. What other strategies should I employ, should I focus on one particular aspect?

    I am working on a project that is based on Urdu language in Ubuntu platform. I'm using Python language and have almost achieved my task. The problem is that, the Urdu text is rendered in reverse order. For example, consider the word ??? (which means work) consisting of the three letters: ? , ? , and ? The output is rendered in reverse order as ??? consisting of the three letters: ?, ?, and ? When copying this text to Open Office or opening the generated XML file in Firefox, the generated result is absolutely desired. I Am using Python 2.6 IDLE, its working perfect with Windows platform, which clearly shows its not the problem of IDLE. Am working on TKINTER GUI library. How can this problem be solved?

    Okay, I need help. I'm usually pretty good at SQL queries but this one baffles me. By the way, this is not a homework assignment, it's a real situation in an Access database and I've written the requirements below myself. Here is my table layout. It's in Access 2007 if that matters; I'm writing the query using SQL. Id (primary key) PersonID (foreign key) EventDate NumberOfCredits SuperCredits (boolean) There are events that people go to. They can earn normal credits, or super credits, or both at one event. The SuperCredits column is true if the row represents a number of super credits earned at the event, or false if it represents normal credits. So for example, if there is an event which person 174 attends, and they earn 3 normal credits and 1 super credit at the event, the following two rows would be added to the table: ID PersonID EventDate NumberOfCredits SuperCredits 1 174 1/1/2010 3 false 2 174 1/1/2010 1 true It is also possible that the person could have done two separate things at the event, so there might be more than two columns for one event, and it might look like this: ID PersonID EventDate NumberOfCredits SuperCredits 1 174 1/1/2010 1 false 2 174 1/1/2010 2 false 3 174 1/1/2010 1 true Now we want to print out a report.     I am trying to use osdSH for notifications. It has a 'font' parameter that receives a curiously formed string. From the man: -f -font Set font (Default: -*-lucidatypewriter- bold-*-*-*-*-240-*-*-*-*-*-*) The manual does not comment on the arguments passed (I assume each * represents a possible argument). It would seem that this notation is (or has someday been) standard, but I've not been able to find anything about it. what is the standard ? what argument specifies letter size ?

  • IE not rendering div contents

    I've written an app using HTML 5 and I wan't to show an error box instead of the page when someone visits from IE. When it detects navigator.appName as Microsoft Internet Explorer it hides everything and shows the error div that started out hidden. The div is as follows: <div id='ieerror' style='display:none;width:500px;height:500px;border:3px solid #ff0000;position:absolute;top:50%;left:50%;margin-top:-250px;margin-left:-250px;'> <center> <h1 style='font-size: 30px;'>Internet Explorer is not supported by Aud!</h1><br /><br /> <p>Internet Explorer does not support HTML 5 and therefore this application cannot run.<br /> Please upgrade your browser. We suggest <a href='http://www.google.com/chrome'>Google Chrome</a>!</p> </center> </div> The problem is that when I visit the page in IE, the div pops up with the border, but it has no contents. Nothing is inside of it. I went to view->source and looked at it, and the code is still there, but none of it is rendered. How do I fix this?

  • CSS not rendering on MAMP

    I'm working on a Wordpress blog. I'm embedding a stylesheet as follows: <link rel=”stylesheet” href="<?php bloginfo("stylesheet_url"); ?>" type=”text/css” media=”screen” /> However, the CSS doesn't render, at all. I've checked that the URL that is being put in the href is correct. The CSS is found. But, it doesn't render, in all browsers. I am utterly stumped, and would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction. I'm using MAMP 1.8.3, and Wordpress 1.2.9.

  • Complex LINQ paging algorithm

    We have a list of projects that may or may not have a collection of subprojects. Our report needs to contain all the projects except those that are the parent project of a subproject. I need to page this into pages of, say, 25 rows. But if subprojects appear on that page then ALL the subprojects of that project must appear on the same page. So more than 25 items may appear if necessary. I've got as far as var pagedProjects = db.Projects.Where(x => !x.SubProjects.Any()).Skip( (pageNo -1) * pageSize).Take(pageSize); Obviously, this fails the second part of the requirements. As a further pain in the arse, I need to have a pager control on the report. So I'll need to be able to calculate the total number of pages. I could loop through the whole table of projects but the performance will suffer. Can anybody come up with a paged solution? EDIT - I should probably mention that SubProjects joins back onto Projects via a selfreferencing foreign key so the whole lot comes back as an IQueryable<Project>.

    Here's my simplified domain public class Notification { public Guid ID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public IEnumerable<Location> Locations { get; set; } } public class Location { public Guid Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public decimal Longitude { get; set; } public decimal Latitude { get; set; } } Notifications and Locations have a many-to-many relationship (defined in table LocationsOnNotification). What I'd like to do is query for the nearest 10 Notifications from a given longitude and latitude. I've been trying to use ICriteria, but I'm not sure how to specify the ordering correctly: return Session.CreateCriteria<Notification>() .SetFirstResult(firstIndex) .SetMaxResults(maxResults) .AddOrder(Order.Asc( WHAT GOES HERE! )) .List<Notification>(); What I've been thinking of so far is adding a formula property to the Location mapping; something like this: <property name='Distance' formula='lots of geometry'/> But I'm not sure if that can take in parameters (since I'd need to pass in the user's location to calculate the distance), plus I'm not sure how to specify it in the Order.Asc clause given that it's a property on a many-to-many association class. Any ideas? Or perhaps I should take a different approach altogether. Thanks in advance!

  • complex web forms and javascript

    I need to create a few data heavy complicated forms. Currently, the information is being entered into a spread sheet, but the users will need to enter the information into the online form where it will be saved to a database. The problem is that the business users currently using the spread sheet aren't going to want to use the online application if it isn't as easy as entering the information into the spread sheet. This is further complicated in that the information they are entering into the spread sheet is represented by three different DB tables where one "object" is composed of two of the others. I would prefer to not have them have to go through multiple forms. Some of what I have been thinking is: Use of auto complete where possible Hiding/removing form fields dynamically possible wizard style page flow?? I've been googling for other data heavy web forms but can't seem to really find any good examples. I am familiar with jQuery and prototypejs and have also tried googling for frameworks designed for data heavy applications but didn't come up with anything. Any thoughts? Thanks.
