• How can I track scrolling in a Google Analytics custom report?

  I want to track scrolling on my website since it's a long page (rather than multiple pages). • Creating an in-house single source software development team

  Our company wants to create a single department for all software development efforts (rather than having software development managed by each business unit). Business units would then "outsource" their software needs to this department. What would you setup as concerns/expectations that must be cleared before doing this? For example: Need agreement between units on how much actual time (FTE) is allocated to each unit Need agreement on scheduling of staff need agreement on request procedure if extra time is required by one party etc... Have you been in a situation like this as a manager of one unit destined to use this? If so, what were problems you experienced? What would you have or did implement? Same if you were the manager of the shared team. Please assume, for discussion, that the people concerned know that you can't swap devs in and out on a whim. I don't want to know the disadvantages of this approach; I know them. I want to anticipate issues and know how to mitigate the fallout.

• Need an engine for MMO mockup

  What I don't need is an MMORPG engine, at the moment. What I do need is a flexible easy-to-use engine that I can make a mock-up with. I don't need support for more than 10 players in an instance, so any multiplayer platform is probably fine. I need an engine with which I can create the following core features: Waves of simple AI enemies that have specific objectives (move to point A, destroy target, move to point B). The units present can be between 50-200 in number. An over-the-shoulder view and the ability to control a team of 3 (like Mass Effect or the latest Dragon Age) Functioning inventory system Right now, all I can really think of is Unreal or Source. Any other suggestions? Again, this is a proving mock-up, not an actual MMO. I'm not terribly worried about the visual aspects as we just want to test mechanics. Note: Can write some scripts in Python, Ruby, or Lua, if necessary.

• More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers. • Robust way to keep records of software releases?

  We release a number of small plug-ins that go along with our software. Each plug-in allows our software to talk to a single manufactuer's hardware. I would like to devise a system for keeping track of plug-in releases. Example info that should be stored: Hardware manufacturer name 32-bit? 64-bit? both? What modes of operation does the hardware support? What versions of the manufacturer's driver have been tested with the plugin? Desirable properties of the system: Able to synchronize with version control software Stores data in human-readable text file (also good for differ tool) Free visual, spreadsheet-like editor available Able to do simple analysis like "What is the oldest plug-in?" I've got to imagine that someone else has tackled this problem already. Right now my best guess is XML/JSON with a visual editor, but I have been disappointed in the editors I've tried so far. I'd like to get input from some more experienced developers. Thanks!

• Website (X)HTML Code Change Detection [closed]

  I am looking for an enterprise-grade service or a tool that can be used to scan / fingerprint websites and notify when major XHTML code changes are detected. The tool should be able to continuously scan thousands of websites and determine the percentage of HTML code that has been modified since the last run. And then either save the data where it can be easily accessed or send periodic notifications. I know of services like ChangeDetect.com, but they don't do markup only changes and instead focus on everything, including content. We don't really care about presentation content, because a lot of sites we need to cover are updated frequently with content.

• What does backup procedures and troubleshooting guidelines mean for a system

  I am writing the documentation for a piece of software which I have made but I don't understand what it means in some aspects. It asks me to write about backup procedures but what exactly does this mean? Does this mean like backing up the database on another hosting service or something else entirely? I am dumbfounded by what troubleshooting guidelines are as well. • Can too many 301 redirects cause a DNS error?

  For a site http://imageocd.com that I just set up I initially spelled the category "automobiles" as "autimobiles"... I know it's rediculous. I then set up over 10,000 pages behind that category e.g. http://imageocd.com/automobiles/hillman-minx-cabrio-pictures-and-wallpapers. So, I set up over 10,000 301 url redirects to change the spelling on automobiles. I just checked my Google Webmasters report and got an error saying: http://www.imageocd.com/: Googlebot can't access your siteSep 7, 2012 Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 66.7%. Could the overabundance of 301 redirects be causing this? I host 13 sites on this dedicated server and all sites are running fine. I also contacted GoDaddy and they said the server is running fine. Any ideas on what might be going on? Also, I have "canonical" set up for every URL. Could this be part of the error? Thanks.

• What are some advantages / disadvantages to working on a remote development machine?

  At home I have a fast rig with my dev environment running in virtual box. that works great, but at work I have a so-so laptop that can barely push visual studio express, outlook, and a dozen chrome windows at the same time. So I can either ask for a dedicated desktop to do development on, or I can ask for a slice on an existing server from IT and remote into it. Setup-wise, the remote option is faster and cheaper. But I don't know its affect on production in the long term. I've done small amounts of work through a remote connection, but never extended development. Do you have experience with this? What are some of the ads/disads to it? Did it make you less productive?

• Should we hire a new developer now, or wait until the code is refactored to make it suitable for a team environment?

  I support and develop a large system that uses various technologies e.g. c++,.net,vb6 etc. I am a sole developer. I am debating whether now is the right time to approach my manager (who is not a developer) to ask if another developer can be recruited. I don't have any experience working in software teams. I have always been a sole developer. The concerns I have are: There is still a lot to do. Training another developer would take time and distract me from my duties. The company does not invest heavily in tools e.g. source control The code in this system needs to be refactored to introduce concepts such as interfaces, polymorphism etc, which are supported by methodologies such as Agile (I inherited the system about 12 months ago). I am gradually trying to refactor the code. I believe I have two options: Approach my manager now Wait until I have had time to refactor the code so it is more suitable for a team environment. Which option is best? I am hoping to hear from other developers who have been in my situation.

  i have a website with thousands of dynamic pages. I want to use the robots.txt file in order to dissalow certain url patterns corresponding to pages with duplicate content. For example i have a page for article itemA belonging to category catA/subcatA, with URL: /catA/subcatA/itemA this is the URL that i want to be indexed from google. this article is also visible via tagging in various other places in the web site. The URLs produced via tagging is like: /tagA1/itemA this URL i want NOT to be indexed from google. However i want to have indexed all tag listings: /tagA1 so how can i achieve this? dissalow URLs of including a specific string with a '/' at the end? /tagA1/ itemA - dissalow /tagA1 - allow

• Running CLOC (count lines of code) on Windows...or alternative

  I'm trying to use CLOC on Windows (XP) to count lines of code, and I can't get it to work. I downloaded the latest Win installer for CLOC 1.5.6, ran it (which caused a "DOS" window to open, scroll with text rapidly, then close before I could read anything) and then wrote cloc at the cmd prompt...and Windows doesn't recognize it as a command. Or if there is another easy-to-use lines of code counter that one could recommend (that runs on Windows), I'd be happy to try that.

• How do you tell if advice from a senior developer is bad?

  Recently, I started my first job as a junior developer and I have a more senior developer in charge of mentoring me in this small company. However, there are several times when he would give me advice on things that I just couldn't agree with (it goes against what I learned in several good books on the topic written by the experts, questions I asked on some Q&A sites also agree with me) and given our busy schedule, we probably have no time for long debates. So far, I have been trying to avoid the issue by listening to him, raising a counterpoint based on what I've learned as current good practices. He raises his original point again (most of the time he will say best practice, more maintainable but just didn't go further), I take a note (since he didn't raise a new point to counter my counterpoint), think about it and research at home, but don't make any changes (I'm still not convinced). But recently, he approached me yet again, saw my code and asked me why haven't I changed it to his suggestion. This is the 3rd time in 2--3 weeks. As a junior developer, I know that I should respect him, but at the same time I just can't agree with some of his advice. Yet I'm being pressured to make changes that I think will make the project worse. Of course as an inexperienced developer, I could be wrong and his way might be better, it may be 1 of those exception cases. My question is: what can I do to better judge if a senior developer's advice is good, bad or maybe it's (good but outdated in today context)? And if it is bad/outdated, what tactics can I use to not implement it his way despite his 'pressures' while maintaining the fact that I respect him as a senior?

• Change from static HTML file to meta tag for Google Webmaster verification

  I started verifying the server by putting a couple of static HTMLs in place. Then I noticed that Google wants you to keep these files in place. I didn't want to keep the static HTMLs in, so I want to switch to an alternative verification mechanism, and include the meta tags on the home page. Unfortunately, once your site is verified, you never seem to be able to change to an alternative way of verification. I tried removing the HTML pages. No luck whatsoever. Google still considers the site to be 'verified'. Does anybody know how to undo this? All I want to do is switch to the meta tag based method of site ownership verification.

• Is there a tool for detecting sites using the same template?

  I often buy webtemplates online, and when I do so I often look at the demos to get some inspiration on how to use the components. But I would love to look at other sites which have already implemented a full website using this template. So I am looking for a tool which searches sites having a similar HTML as the demos (and therefore are probably implementing the template). I am referring to templates which do not have a static text like "Created with Template FooBar by BarFoo" in the footer.

• Difference in stats on the same domain - seo related

  Recently i started to optimize my company's website. With a little help of market samurai. One of the adjustments was a www redirect to the prefered domain. We currently rank on #8 for our desired keyword with the domain without the www. If I add a custom url (our domain with www), we see a difference in stats BLP (backlinks to the page) {it's the website on top} Can anyone tell me how i could merge this so we might even rank better for our keyword? What I did so far: 3 weeks ago set the www.duo.be as prefered domain in GWT and put a 301 redirect in place so the duo.be gets redirected to www.duo.be Both domains are in GWT and both with www.duo.be as preferred domain. • What is the best way to learn C# programming? [closed]

  My case I want to get the capability of doing anything in C# from building applications to solving problems. I searched for and tried to read books. Then one of the experts said that reading books will not make any good and that to learn, you have to solve real world problems in C#, and he gave me some problems which I previously solved in C++. The thing is that while I know the internal logic of solving the problem, I don't know how to implement it using C# efficiently. I know the message to pass but not the exact way to pass it. I did a program to solve a problem, then find out there are much easier ways of doing it wherever I was doing it in tougher way. What I need to get hold of the language and get the ability to code in C# proficiently?
