• print job doesn't go to print queue

  I have two printers hooked up to my intel imac. I am having a printing error. It seems that whenever i try to print (a simple text doc) I am unable to get the print job to go to print queue with one of my printers. I have a HP c7280 and a HP c3100. I am able to get one working properly, but the other doesn't seem to allow it to go to the print queue. I have switched usb cables (with the printer that I know works) and both printers are recognized by the computer in the printer preferences pane. I've tried reseting the printer system in the printer setup utility.. reloaded the drivers from HP.. etc. If anyone has a suggestion or could point me to a little help i'd be VERY grateful Best Regards.. • All in a Day's Work: Unblocking Multiple Downloaded Files with a Single Command

  Files downloaded using Internet Explorer retain Internet Zone permission level and hence are “Blocked” by default on Windows 7 machines. Honestly, while an added overhead for developers; I really appreciate this feature as it provides a good protection layer for casual web users. My workaround is to simply unblock the downloaded zip file (if download was a zip file) which, in turn, unblocks the files stored within. Today however, I was left with a situation where I had to “Open” and “Copy” the content rather than “Save” a zip file. That of course left me with a few dozen files I have to manually unblock. A few minutes of internet search lead me to the link below which worked like a charm: 1-Download streams.exe from SystInternals - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897440.aspx 2-Go to command prompt (cmd.exe) 3-Navigate to where you have streams.exe installed 4-Use command line switches: streams.exe –s –d “<folder path>” This removed the Internet Zone restrictions from all files under “<folder path>” and its subfolders as well. • PC always boots into Command Line

  My current Problem is, that when I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop, neither unity nor gnome are installed. During the installation, I am prompted with the message that only the core is installed, and which additional packages I would like to have installed. When I select ubuntu-desktop, the installer grabs some packages and installs them, but after completing the installation and booting into my Ubuntu, i dont get any GUI, but instead I have the command line interface. When I try to start a new Unity session, i get an error saying that Unity is not installed, so I tried to install it. However this changes nothing, my PC still boots into the Command Line. Are there any solutions to my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. EDIT: I tried to fix it with the following commands: $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop $ sudo apt-get install gdm $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start When I try to boot, I get the Ubuntu splash screen, but then the screen mainly shows white squares, with a few black ones at the top.

• Uncorrectable machine check

  I am experiencing rare but real unrecoverable machine checks on HP DL370 G6 dual-core Xeon server. I ran memtest86+ before, and ran CPU-intensive operations without any problems. In your opinion, does this indicate a real problem, or is it normal and expected behavior? How would you approach this problem? EDIT after some troubleshooting, it seems that these machine checks, as well as problems when showing device manager can be traced back to NC375i NICs. All is well when the NICs are not in the server. Further improvements to stability of HP Gen6 with Intel Xeon have been brought in with BIOS update in September 2013 HP Update DVD. Intel's newer microcode makes these CPUs much more stable. We haven't seen hardware-related BSODs since the update in September.

• Problem dismissing multiple modal view controllers

  I am having trouble getting my modal view controllers to display properly. I have a parent view controller that is the delegate for modal view A. In modal view A I am presenting modal view B, and having the delegate dimiss modal view A. When modal view B appears it seems to display but the screen dims, and the UI locks up, but the app doesn't crash. I set animation settings to NO and I am still getting the same issue.

• Passing a ManagedObjectContext to a second view

  I'm writing my first iPhone/Cocoa app. It has two table views inside a navigation view. When you touch a row in the first table view, you are taken to the second table view. I would like the second view to display records from the CoreData entities related to the row you touched in the first view. I have the CoreData data showing up fine in the first table view. You can touch a row and go to the second table view. I'm able to pass info from the selected object from the first to the second view. But I cannot get the second view to do its own CoreData fetching. For the life of me I cannot get the managedObjectContext object to pass to the second view controller. I don't want to do the lookups in the first view and pass a dictionary because I want to be able to use a search field to refine results in the second view, as well as insert new entries to the CoreData data from there. • Ubuntu Server 12 not spawning a serial ttyS0 when running on Xen

  I have this problem on more than one host, so the specific hardware is not an issue. Bare metal Ubuntu 12 is not creating a login process on the only serial port, in the default configuration. The serial port works correctly with the firmware. It works correctly with Grub2. I have even connected the serial line to 2 different external client boxes, so the problem is neither the hardware nor the remote client. • How to get current datetime on windows command line, in a suitable format for using in a filename?

  What's a windows command line statement(s) I can use to get the current datetime in a format that I can put into a filename? I want to have a .bat file that zips up a directory into an archive with the current date & time as part of the name, eg "Code_2008-10-14_2257.zip". Is there any easy way I can do this, independent of the regional settings of the machine? I don't really mind about the date format, ideally it'd be yyyy-mm-dd but anything simple is fine. So far I've got this, which on my machine gives me "Tue_10_14_2008_230050_91" rem Get the datetime in a format that can go in a filename. set _my_datetime=%date%_%time% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime: =_% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime::=% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime:/=_% set _my_datetime=%_my_datetime:.=_% rem now use the timestamp by in a new zip file name "d:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -r Code_%_my_datetime%.zip Code I can live with this but it seems a bit clunky. Ideally it'd be briefer and have the format mentioned earlier. I'm using Windows Server 2003 and Win XP Pro. I don't want to install additional utilities to achieve this (although I realise there are some that will do nice date formatting).

• PASS Summit 2012: keynote and Mobile BI announcements #sqlpass

  Today at PASS Summit 2012 there have been several announcements during the keynote. Moreover, other news have not been highlighted in the keynote but are equally if not more important for the BI community. Let’s start from the big news in the keynote (other details on SQL Server Blog): Hekaton: this is the codename for in-memory OLTP technology that will appear (I suppose) in the next release of the SQL Server relational engine. The improvement in performance and scalability is impressive and it enables new scenarios. I’m curious to see whether it can be used also to improve ETL performance and how it differs from using SSD technology. Updates on Columnstore: In the next major release of SQL Server the columnstore indexes will be updatable and it will be possible to create a clustered index with Columnstore index. This is really a great news for near real-time reporting needs! Polybase: in 2013 it will debut SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW), which will include the Polybase technology. By using Polybase a single T-SQL query will run queries across relational data and Hadoop data. A single query language for both. Sounds really interesting for using BigData in a more integrated way with existing relational databases. And, of course, to load a data warehouse using BigData, which is the ultimate goal that we all BI Pro have, right? SQL Server 2012 SP1: the Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2012 is available now and it enable the use of PowerPivot for SharePoint and Power View on a SharePoint 2013 installation with Excel 2013. Power View works with Multidimensional cube: the long-awaited feature of being able to use PowerPivot with Multidimensional cubes has been shown by Amir Netz in an amazing demonstration during the keynote. The interesting thing is that the data model behind was based on a many-to-many relationship (something that is not fully supported by Power View with Tabular models). Another interesting aspect is that it is Analysis Services 2012 that supports DAX queries run on a Multidimensional model, enabling the use of any future tool generating DAX queries on top of a Multidimensional model. There are still no info about availability by now, but this is *not* included in SQL Server 2012 SP1. So what about Mobile BI? Well, even if not announced during the keynote, there is a dedicated session on this topic and there are very important news in this area: iOS, Android and Microsoft mobile platforms: the commitment is to get data exploration and visualization capabilities working within June 2013. This should impact at least Power View and SharePoint/Excel Services. This is the type of UI experience we are all waiting for, in order to satisfy the requests coming from users and customers. The important news here is that native applications will be available for both iOS and Windows 8 so it seems that Android will be supported initially only through the web. Unfortunately we haven’t seen any demo, so it’s not clear what will be the offline navigation experience (and whether there will be one). But at least we know that Microsoft is working on native applications in this area. I’m not too surprised that HTML5 is not the magic bullet for all the platforms. The next PASS Business Analytics conference in 2013 seems a good place to see this in action, even if I hope we don’t have to wait other six months before seeing some demo of native BI applications on mobile platforms! Viewing Reporting Services reports on iPad is supported starting with SQL Server 2012 SP1, which has been released today. This is another good reason to install SP1 on SQL Server 2012. • Windows wait command till a system time

  I have made a batch script for backup recently. Somewhere in the middle of script I'll have to wait for some time to be reached and then resume the next line of the script. I've scheduled the script at 4:00PM and after the wait command the next line should start at exactly 5:30PM. I thought of using SLEEP command but it's not sure that the commands used before the wait command will end up at certain time(due to inconsistent file sizes) but it's sure that they will be done by 5:00 or 5:10 and next it should execute wait command which waits for certain system clock. I'm checking if there is any command that waits or sleeps until the time specified reaches the system time and resumes there after. Anybody came across this situation and how was that resolved?

  I have a command that I want to run on machine B from machine A. If I run the command on machine B locally, it works fine. Here is the command: for n in `find /data1/ -name 'ini*.ext'` ; do echo cp $n "`dirname $n `/` basename $n .ext`"; done From machine A, I issue this command ssh user@machineB for n in `find /data1/ -name 'ini*jsem'` ; do echo cp $n "`dirname $n `/` basename $n .jsem`"; done But I get error syntax error near unexpected token do What is wrong? I think it has something to do with double quotes, single quotes, semi colon because executing command ssh user@machineB ls works fine. So not issue of authentication or something else. Thanks

  I am working on creating system monitoring graphs from sar outputs. Ksar seems to be a nice gui tool, with some command line support. My goal is to create pdf/png charts from a script using ksar command line. The released version has some minor bugs where I got some exceptions. Fortunately the beta 5.1.0_beta4 does not have the bugs and produces nice graphs from GUI. But I cannot seem to run the command line version. Trying to create a pdg/chart from command line is always bringing the GUI. Anyone had experience using command line ksar to produce pdfs/pngs?

• sudo/su command for Red Hat Server 5.4

  Without going into too much detail, I need to execute one linux command on redhat with root user access. Red Hat Server 5.4 does not recognise the sudo command. The command su can be used to switch to the root user on redhat, but su cannot be done in one line. For example the command: su ; cd opt/storage/RootAccessFolder will not work because this only switches you to root, then executes the cd command once you have logged out from the root user. I guess what i'm looking for is like a.. sudo cd opt/storage/RootAccessFolder but I say again, sudo doesn't work. Any ideas?

• Mac OSX server command equivalent for dhclient?

  Is there an MacOS command that makes a dhcp request, and renews the old lease, drops it for a new one, or usefully reports errors or lack of response from a dhcp server? This would both help fix networking on the machine after problems on the network without rebooting and would also be useful to diagnose wider networking problems from a mac. I can not find any command equivalent of dhclient though obviously some component must be serving this purpose. The question is, is that component exposed to a command line interface? I am biased to the command line for these features and may have overlooked settings panels or tools that might solve it using a gui interface. I believe this question is at the heart of this other question: Is there an equivalent command for 'init.d/networking restart' in OS X

  I installed CygWin on Windows 7. Using Notepad, I edited my ~/.bash_profile file to add on to the PATH variable … PATH="${PATH}:/cygdrive/c/apache-ant-1.8.2/bin" Now, when I SSH in to my Windows machine, I get this error … -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: /home/dev/.bash_profile: line 39: syntax error: unexpected end of file and my PATH is not set. Anyone know how I can correct this?

  I purchased a new server with a few ip's so I modified the /etc/network/interfaces file recently so that my ip's can go live. While editing that file I created a backup and deleted the original file. I recreated the interfaces file using the touch command and gave +x permissions but now, when trying to restart the interface (/etc/network/interfaces restart) I get all sorts of errors: /etc/network/interfaces: line 10: iface: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 11: address: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 12: netmask: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 13: auto: command not found Can any1 point what I forgot to do? • Complex nagios command

  I have defined the following command for one of my service checks: define command{ command_name mycommand command_line $USER1$/check_by_ssh -p $ARG1$ -l nagios -i /etc/nagios2/keys/key1 -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -v -C 'source $USER10$ ; command.py -a get --alert-name $ARG2$ -q' } The problem is that it seems that nagios is parsing the command with the semicolon, and producing garbage which can not be executed. I have tried also putting a backslash \;, to no avail. If I run the command directly on the shell, it works. Which means that this is not a problem with check_by_ssh, but a problem on the parsing of the nagios configuration file. How can I debug this? Is there a way to get a listing of all the commands that nagios has parsed when reading the configuration files?

• something strange about Win-XP's command shell

  I wrote the following command in windows XP's command shell and something strange happened: C:\Folder1> copy sample.txt : Because of my typing mistake, I wrote ":" instead of "D:" ... but it copied the sample.txt to somewhere I cant find! I searched my whole HDD for sample.txt but the only instance of this file is the original one which is in C:\Folder1. Do you know where ":" path actually is in Win-XP command shell? You might say ":" is current path and the file has been copied onto itself but look at this: If you run that command for the first time, this will be the result: 1 file copied. but the next time you run that command it will ask you: overwrite sample.txt? (yes/no/all) So if it were writing the file onto itself, both results would have to be the same but they aren't. Thanks in advance for your help.

• How do I pipe terminal standard output (stdout) to the clipboard?

  For example, Say I want to list the contents of a folder and directly paste them into a chat window for a friend to see. I realize I could do ls > filename.txt to create a file (filename.txt) with those contents; I'd then have to open or print the file and manually select and copy the text block (which can be annoying/tedious.) I clearly could also select and copy the output of ls directly from within the terminal window. It would be much faster/easier to simply pipe standard output to the clipboard. What terminal command allows me to do this?
