Windows 7 does not detect my new hard drive?

I just built a really nice new PC. Some specs... Intel i7-930 CPU ASRock Extreme X58 motherboard with sata 3 and USB 3.0 12gb of G-Skill DDR3 RAM 80gb Intel G2 Solid state drive for Windows 7 and other programs to run on Windows 7 Pro 64bit OS 2 1gb grapghic cards for 4 monitor support Thats the main components. Well today my new 1tb western digital hard drive came which I plan to use for data to preserve the life of my SSD (hopefully). I hooked up it's sata power input and then hooked up it's sata data cable to a sata 2 port on my motherboard, I boot windows 7 and go into my computer and the drive is not showing up with my other drives. I then re-boot again and check again, no luck. I then shut down the PC and open the case back up, I then check my connections and they all look good. I then boot up and I can see the new HD is on and spinning. I then go into my BIOS settings to see if it registers there and it DOES! It shows I have a WD 1tb hard drvie on sata 2 port 6. So I am at a loss of why it is not showing up as an option in windows? Windows acts as if the drive is not there. Please help

connecting to a network using route command

I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers. Sound doesn't work anymore after replacing RAM

Hello, today, I replaced one old RAM module with two newer, bigger ones, but now, the sound doesn't seem to work anymore. Already ran alsaconf and it didn't help. Can I have a single solid state drive and a RAID array on the same machine? [closed]

Hi- To summarize, i'm looking to use a single solid state drive as my primary drive, and two conventional sata drives in a RAID 1 configuration for data. I am trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 onto this configuration. Is this possible? Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can I install windows on an SSD and access data from my old windows HDD?

I purchased new computer components, switching my hardware from AMD and Radeon to Intel and Nvidia. I kept components from my old computer like the powersupply and two HDDs. Everything appeared to install correctly and the system booted into the BIOS just fine (after a brief snafu with the CPU fan). My goal was to use the two harddrives and just be able to turn on the computer and load up my old windows install with all the files, programs, and documents. I expected to have to call Microsoft to re-register the windows install for the new hardware (since I had to do that last time I upgraded w/ the same windows version). When the computer attempts to boot into windows it briefly flashes a bluescreen and then restarts. System recovery gives a message something like "BadDriver Failover" something something. I assume this is because it's trying to use amd drivers for an intel chipset (or something...?) and I've been as-yet unsuccessful in getting it to boot into my old windows partition. SO! I decided eff it, maybe I'll go visit my nearest Micro Center and buy a 200 GB SSD, install windows onto that, and then... be able to access just the contents of both of my other harddrives? I don't intend on running any of the programs but there were some saved files I would like to salvage from the 500 GB harddrive, The 1.5 TB harddrive only had files on it, no OS or applications so I'd also expect to still be able to access it. Is this possible? Can I install the SSD and only format/install windows onto it and still access the contents from my two transferred-over drives?

HP DL380 G3 2U For Basic Web Server in 2012

I have an opportunity to pick up a used HP DL380 G3 2U for $100. I'm looking for a basic entry level web server that I can host a small - medium size website on and more or less learn the ins and outs of running my own web server before I bite the bullet and spend a couple grand on a server. The specs are: Dual (2) Intel Xeon 2.4GHz 400MHz 512KB Cache 4GB PC2100 ECC Registered Memory 6 x 72GB 10K U320 SCSI Hard Drives Smart Array 5i RAID Controller Redundant Power Supplies DVD/Floppy, Dual Intel GB NIC's, USB Or would I be better off spending a couple hundred bucks on something like: this new HP Seems like the only major difference is SATA and a bit of storage, but I will likely be implementing a separate storage system of some sort anyways. I guess it also wouldn't hurt to mention that I plan on running a linux server distro, so would the hardware be likely to support linux with a system that is 4 generations old? I don't mind spending a couple hundred extra dollars if its a better solution, but as mentioned previously I am simple looking for a server to learn on and probably use for a year or so while I put together a small - medium size website.

Windows Server 2008 R2 grinds to a screeching halt during file copy operations

When my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine is performing any large disk operations (copying 10GB files from one drive to another, copying similar file over network, merging HyperV snapshots, compressing large files), performance of the whole machine slows down terribly, everything becomes unresponsive. This is noticeable in any situation when the disk access is large enough not to fit in the cache. Are there any settings available for tuning this behaviour? I can accept slower file transfer if this would give me more responsiveness. System details: Dell Optiflex 960, Core 2 Quad Q9650, 8GB RAM, 2 SATA drives - 320GB (ST3320418AS) and 1TB (ST31000528AS), NCQ active on both, Intel 82564LM-3 Gigabit Ethernet, ATI HD 3450 graphics, Intel ICH10 bridge. We have multiple machines like this, every one is exhibiting the same behaviour. I though this was overkill for a workstation, apparently I was mistaken. Update: I guess I shouldn't have mentioned the HyperV at all. The above configuration is a standard workstation setup at the company I work for, this is not a server of any kind. I have at most 3 virtual machines working, and usually I'm the only person accessing them. Never the less, the slowdown occurs even when no VMs are running. On a Linux machine I'd simply ionice the copy process and I could forget about it, is there any way to manage IO priorities on Windows?

5 year old server upgrade

I am looking to upgrade a server for a web app. Currently the application is running very sluggish. We've made some adjustments to mysql (that's another issue in itself) and made some adjustments so that heaviest quires get run on a copy of the database on another server was have as a backup, however this will not last that much longer and we are looking to upgrade. Currently the servers CPUs are (4) Intel(R) XEON(TM) CPU 2.00GHz, with 1 gig of ram. The database is 442.5 MiB, with about 1,743,808 records. There are two parts of the program, the one, side a, inserts and updates most of the data. Side b, reads the data and does some minor updates. Currently our biggest day for side a are 800 users (of 40,000 users all year) imputing the system. And our Side b is currently unknown, however we have a total of 1000 clients. The system is most likely going to cap out at 5000 side b clients, with about a year 300,000 side a users. The current database is 5 years old, so we can most likely expect the database to grow pretty rapidly, possibly double each year (which we can most likely archive older records if it comes to that). So with that being said, should we get a server for each side of the app, side a being the master, side b being the slave, any updates made on side b are router to side a. So the question is should i get 2 of these or 1. 2 x Intel Nehalem Xeon E5520 2.26Ghz (8 Cores) 12GB DDRIII Memory 500GB SATAII HDD 100Mbps Port Speed And Naturally I would need to have a redundant backup so it could potentially be 4 of them.

Can't connect to wi-fi hotspot in Ubuntu 11.10

I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm having a wireless network problem in Ubuntu 11.10. I made a hotspot using Connectify from a computer which is running Windows 7. I can access it in Windows 7 but not in Ubuntu 11.10. Every time I access it,I get a message "disconnected". I'm using msi fx 400 notebook with Intel Centrino wireless -N 1000 wireless card. Windows 8 doesn't start up after installation

I have a DELL INSPIRON n5110 machine running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It has 6GB of RAM and 500 GB hard disk capable to run any Windows and Linux system. And I recently attempted to install Windows 8 in the machine. Installation goes fine and smooth until the final stage when windows is done installing and GETS DEVICES READY. When GETTNG DEVICES READY reaches about 60%, the screen goes blank with the machine running. After a while it reboots. And after the new Windows Logo with dotted circles are done showing up, the screen goes blank again (when we'd expect login screen to show up). There is not even a cursor. I can see the HARD DISK ACTIVITY LED blinking but nothing shows up in the screen. I've tried CLEAN INSTALL several times. The DVD is fine, it installed and worked well in my friends' laptop PCs. I tried installing both PRO version and ENTERPRISE version and both 32-bit and 64-bit. But the problem was same everytime. Finally, I had to reinstall Windows 7 which installed and ran without any problem. The problem, we can guess, is GRAPHICS perhaps. I have Intel SandyBridge Graphics Mobile Chipset (Intel HD Graphics 3000). But if Windows 7 and Linux distrubutions like Mint and BackTrack can run on the machine, why on earth, would Windows 8 not run?

Exploring the Excel Services REST API

Over the last few years Analysis Services guru Chris Webb and I have been on something of a crusade to enable better access to data that is locked up in countless Excel workbooks that litter the hard drives of enterprise PCs. The most prominent manifestation of that crusade up to now has been a forum thread that Chris began on Microsoft Answers entitled Excel Web App API? Chris began that thread with: I was wondering whether there was an API for the Excel Web App? Specifically, I was wondering if it was possible (or if it will be possible in the future) to expose data in a spreadsheet in the Excel Web App as an OData feed, in the way that it is possible with Excel Services? Up to recently the last 10 words of that paragraph "in the way that it is possible with Excel Services" had completely washed over me however a comment on my recent blog post Thoughts on ExcelMashup.com (and a rant) by Josh Booker in which Josh said: Excel Services is a service application built for sharepoint 2010 which exposes a REST API for excel documents. We're looking forward to pros like you giving it a try now that Office365 makes sharepoint more easily accessible. Can't wait for your future blog about using REST API to load data from Excel on Offce 365 in SSIS. made me think that perhaps the Excel Services REST API is something I should be looking into and indeed that is what I have been doing over the past few days. And you know what? I'm rather impressed with some of what Excel Services' REST API has to offer. Unfortunately Excel Services' REST API also has one debilitating aspect that renders this blog post much less useful than it otherwise would be; namely that it is not publicly available from the Excel Web App on SkyDrive. Therefore all I can do in this blog post is show you screenshots of what the REST API provides in Sharepoint rather than linking you directly to those REST resources; that's a great shame because one of the benefits of a REST API is that it is easily and ubiquitously demonstrable from a web browser. Instead I am hosting a workbook on Sharepoint in Office 365 because that does include Excel Services' REST API but, again, all I can do is show you screenshots. N.B. If anyone out there knows how to make Office-365-hosted spreadsheets publicly-accessible (i.e. without requiring a username/password) please do let me know (because knowing which forum on which to ask the question is an exercise in futility). In order to demonstrate Excel Services' REST API I needed some decent data and for that I used the World Tourism Organization Statistics Database and Yearbook - United Nations World Tourism Organization dataset hosted on Azure Datamarket (its free, by the way); this dataset "provides comprehensive information on international tourism worldwide and offers a selection of the latest available statistics on international tourist arrivals, tourism receipts and expenditure" and you can explore the data for yourself here. If you want to play along at home by viewing the data as it exists in Excel then it can be viewed here. Let's dive in. The root of Excel Services' REST API is the model resource which resides at: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model Note that this is true for every workbook hosted in a Sharepoint document library - each Excel workbook is a RESTful resource. (Update: Mark Stacey on Twitter tells me that "It's turned off by default in onpremise Sharepoint (1 tickbox to turn on though)". Thanks Mark!) The data is provided as an ATOM feed but I have Firefox's feed reading ability turned on so you don't see the underlying XML goo. As you can see there are four top level resources, Ranges, Charts, Tables and PivotTables; exploring one of those resources is where things get interesting. Let's take a look at the Tables Resource: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables Our workbook contains only one table, called ‘Table1’ (to reiterate, you can explore this table yourself here). Viewing that table via the REST API is pretty easy, we simply append the name of the table onto our previous URI: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables('Table1') As you can see, that quite simply gives us a representation of the data in that table. What you cannot see from this screenshot is that this is pure HTML that is being served up; that is all well and good but actually we can do more interesting things. If we specify that the data should be returned not as HTML but as: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables('Table1')?$format=image then that data comes back as a pure image and can be used in any web page where you would ordinarily use images. This is the thing that I really like about Excel Services’ REST API – we can embed an image in any web page but instead of being a copy of the data, that image is actually live – if the underlying data in the workbook were to change then hitting refresh will show a new image. Pretty cool, no? The same is true of any Charts or Pivot Tables in your workbook - those can be embedded as images too and if the underlying data changes, boom, the image in your web page changes too. There is a lot of data in the workbook so the image returned by that previous URI is too large to show here so instead let’s take a look at a different resource, this time a range: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Ranges('Data!A1|C15') That URI returns cells A1 to C15 from a worksheet called “Data”: And if we ask for that as an image again: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Ranges('Data!A1|C15')?$format=image Were this image resource not behind a username/password then this would be a live image of the data in the workbook as opposed to one that I had to copy and upload elsewhere. Nonetheless I hope this little wrinkle doesn't detract from the inate value of what I am trying to articulate here; that an existing image in a web page can be changed on-the-fly simply by inserting some data into an Excel workbook. I for one think that that is very cool indeed! I think that's enough in the way of demo for now as this shows what is possible using Excel Services' REST API. Of course, not all features work quite how I would like and here is a bulleted list of some of my more negative feedback: The URIs are pig-ugly. Are "_vti_bin" & "ExcelRest.aspx" really necessary as part of the URI? Would this not be better: http://server/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/Model/Tables(‘Table1’) That URI provides the necessary addressability and is a lot easier to remember. Discoverability of these resources is not easy, we essentially have to handcrank a URI ourselves. Take the example of embedding a chart into a blog post - would it not be better if I could browse first through the document library to an Excel workbook and THEN through the workbook to the chart/range/table that I am interested in? Call it a wizard if you like. That would be really cool and would, I am sure, promote this feature and cut down on the copy-and-paste disease that the REST API is meant to alleviate. The resources that I demonstrated can be returned as feeds as well as images or HTML simply by changing the format parameter to ?$format=atom however for some inexplicable reason they don't return OData and no-one on the Excel Services team can tell me why (believe me, I have asked). $format is an OData parameter however other useful parameters such as $top and $filter are not supported. It would be nice if they were. Although I haven't demonstrated it here Excel Services' REST API does provide a makeshift way of altering the data by changing the value of specific cells however what it does not allow you to do is add new data into the workbook. Google Docs allows this and was one of the motivating factors for Chris Webb's forum post that I linked to above. None of this works for Excel workbooks hosted on SkyDrive This blog post is as long as it needs to be for a short introduction so I'll stop now. Can't wait for your future blog about using REST API to load data from Excel on Offce 365 in SSIS. made me think that perhaps the Excel Services REST API is something I should be looking into and indeed that is what I have been doing over the past few days. And you know what? I'm rather impressed with some of what Excel Services' REST API has to offer. Unfortunately Excel Services' REST API also has one debilitating aspect that renders this blog post much less useful than it otherwise would be; namely that it is not publicly available from the Excel Web App on SkyDrive. Therefore all I can do in this blog post is show you screenshots of what the REST API provides in Sharepoint rather than linking you directly to those REST resources; that's a great shame because one of the benefits of a REST API is that it is easily and ubiquitously demonstrable from a web browser. Instead I am hosting a workbook on Sharepoint in Office 365 because that does include Excel Services' REST API but, again, all I can do is show you screenshots. N.B. If anyone out there knows how to make Office-365-hosted spreadsheets publicly-accessible (i.e. without requiring a username/password) please do let me know (because knowing which forum on which to ask the question is an exercise in futility). In order to demonstrate Excel Services' REST API I needed some decent data and for that I used the World Tourism Organization Statistics Database and Yearbook - United Nations World Tourism Organization dataset hosted on Azure Datamarket (its free, by the way); this dataset "provides comprehensive information on international tourism worldwide and offers a selection of the latest available statistics on international tourist arrivals, tourism receipts and expenditure" and you can explore the data for yourself here. If you want to play along at home by viewing the data as it exists in Excel then it can be viewed here. Let's dive in. The root of Excel Services' REST API is the model resource which resides at: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model Note that this is true for every workbook hosted in a Sharepoint document library - each Excel workbook is a RESTful resource. (Update: Mark Stacey on Twitter tells me that "It's turned off by default in onpremise Sharepoint (1 tickbox to turn on though)". Thanks Mark!) The data is provided as an ATOM feed but I have Firefox's feed reading ability turned on so you don't see the underlying XML goo. As you can see there are four top level resources, Ranges, Charts, Tables and PivotTables; exploring one of those resources is where things get interesting. Let's take a look at the Tables Resource: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables Our workbook contains only one table, called ‘Table1’ (to reiterate, you can explore this table yourself here). Viewing that table via the REST API is pretty easy, we simply append the name of the table onto our previous URI: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables('Table1') As you can see, that quite simply gives us a representation of the data in that table. What you cannot see from this screenshot is that this is pure HTML that is being served up; that is all well and good but actually we can do more interesting things. If we specify that the data should be returned not as HTML but as: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables('Table1')?$format=image then that data comes back as a pure image and can be used in any web page where you would ordinarily use images. This is the thing that I really like about Excel Services’ REST API – we can embed an image in any web page but instead of being a copy of the data, that image is actually live – if the underlying data in the workbook were to change then hitting refresh will show a new image. Pretty cool, no? The same is true of any Charts or Pivot Tables in your workbook - those can be embedded as images too and if the underlying data changes, boom, the image in your web page changes too. There is a lot of data in the workbook so the image returned by that previous URI is too large to show here so instead let’s take a look at a different resource, this time a range: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Ranges('Data!A1|C15') That URI returns cells A1 to C15 from a worksheet called “Data”: And if we ask for that as an image again: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Ranges('Data!A1|C15')?$format=image Were this image resource not behind a username/password then this would be a live image of the data in the workbook as opposed to one that I had to copy and upload elsewhere. Nonetheless I hope this little wrinkle doesn't detract from the inate value of what I am trying to articulate here; that an existing image in a web page can be changed on-the-fly simply by inserting some data into an Excel workbook. I for one think that that is very cool indeed! I think that's enough in the way of demo for now as this shows what is possible using Excel Services' REST API. Of course, not all features work quite how I would like and here is a bulleted list of some of my more negative feedback: The URIs are pig-ugly. Are "_vti_bin" & "ExcelRest.aspx" really necessary as part of the URI? Would this not be better: http://server/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/Model/Tables(‘Table1’) That URI provides the necessary addressability and is a lot easier to remember. Discoverability of these resources is not easy, we essentially have to handcrank a URI ourselves. Take the example of embedding a chart into a blog post - would it not be better if I could browse first through the document library to an Excel workbook and THEN through the workbook to the chart/range/table that I am interested in? Call it a wizard if you like. That would be really cool and would, I am sure, promote this feature and cut down on the copy-and-paste disease that the REST API is meant to alleviate. The resources that I demonstrated can be returned as feeds as well as images or HTML simply by changing the format parameter to ?$format=atom however for some inexplicable reason they don't return OData and no-one on the Excel Services team can tell me why (believe me, I have asked). $format is an OData parameter however other useful parameters such as $top and $filter are not supported. It would be nice if they were. Although I haven't demonstrated it here Excel Services' REST API does provide a makeshift way of altering the data by changing the value of specific cells however what it does not allow you to do is add new data into the workbook. Google Docs allows this and was one of the motivating factors for Chris Webb's forum post that I linked to above. None of this works for Excel workbooks hosted on SkyDrive This blog post is as long as it needs to be for a short introduction so I'll stop now. Programming an Android Button to update EditText views

Ok guys, I have a button in android that i'm trying to use to update 8 EditText Views with different random numbers. Everything works up until I click the button. It appears I am missing a resource according to the debugger, but I'm not sure what. I've tried several different ways of implementing the button. How to expose MEX when I need the service to have NTLM authentication

I'm developing a WCF service that is RESTful and SOAP, now both of them needs to be with NTLM authentication. I also want to expose a MEX endpoint so that others can easily reference the service and work with it. Now when I set IIS to require windows authentication I can use the REST service and make calls to the service succesfully, but when I want to reference the service with SVCUTIL it throws an error that it requires to be anonymous. Opening Skype, Opera, OpenOffice logs me off

Whats common among Skype, Opera, OpenOffice in Ubuntu ? Whenever I open these applications I get logged off and shows back me the login screen. This started happening since the 10.10 upgrade. Forgot to mention : Yes, its x64.Each time I open these applications, the UI shows and then crashes. I started each app & logged the last few lines of /var/log/syslog after each crash. "CB Monitor Windows" proccess blocks XP shutdown

I've got a home server. Simple, low-power-consumption Intel Atom based PC built by me. It runs XP since Win7 was an overkill for this poor thing. Everything was OK, always used Avast! antivirus + Spybot. However, it stopped shutting down after a while. Few days ago I noticed a "CB Monitor Windows" proccess is blocking this (didn't quit from rdp after sending the shutdown command). What is this proccess? How can I disable/remove it? Tried Malwarebytes, found ONE malware, removed it, did a reboot, no change. Avast is up-to-date, Spybot is the same. What could I do?

Unable to install Eclipse manually

I have just started Linux. I have a SBC(Atom processor) on which I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and now I am trying to install Fortran IDE. For which I have learnt that I need to install OpenJDK first, then Eclipse Juno and at last the Phortran plugin for Eclipse. I have no Internet access so I had follow the below steps for manual installation. First download the eclipse tar.gz package (downloaded: eclipse-parallel-juno-linux-gtk.tar). Would I be better off getting a full sized ATX mobo/case and configuring the RAID internally? I really want to keep power consumption down as much as possible as I leave my home server up 24/7.

Event Viewer: atapi errors

Specs for Samsung N120 Netbook Atom N270 @ 1.60 GHz / 160 GB IDE HDD / 2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM / Windows XP Home SP3 So I'm still getting some atapi errors in my Event Viewer. Here are two atapi errors I am getting over and over again: (1) The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period. (2) The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0. In addition, I am repeatedly getting this warning as well: (1) An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. I just got this back from repair, where before, I couldn't boot at all because I was led to a black screen saying "Operating System Not Found". Still, I got it back and it can boot again, without any hard drive replacement or data loss. So, how can I get rid of these errors and warnings? What could have happened during repairs to allow my netbook to boot again? Thanks in advance.

PC hangs and reboots from time to time

Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. What is the fastest MD5 sum calculator?

I tested the speed of md5sum on a few Ubuntu 8.04 servers Pentium III 700 MHz: 52 MB/s Atom 1.6 GHz, 32-bit: 119 MB/s Core 2 (Yorkfield) 2.5GHz, 32-bit: 194 MB/s Core 2 (Yorkfield) 2.5GHz, 64-bit: 222 MB/s Then I downloaded a tool (by apt-get install) called md5deep and found that it's roughly 20% faster (as tested on the 32-bit Core 2 server). This makes me feel that the "vanilla" md5sum included in Ubuntu isn't the fastest one. Questions: Other than md5deep, are you aware of any MD5 calculators that are potentially faster than md5sum? (Answers for software from other OS are also welcomed.) If I want to compile md5sum myself, where can I download the source? What compiler options would you suggest for the Core 2 server? (note: gcc 4.2.4 in Ubuntu 8.04 does not seem to support -march=core2)

I have 2 video cards, one On board, a nVidia 6150SE nForce 430 and a PCIe nVidia GeForce GT 220 1GB DDR2 RAM I have already configured the PCIe card to use the dual monitor feature, using the VGA and HDMI ports, but now I want to add a third monitor, using the On board VGA port I have managed to enable the On board graphics processor, which is taking 400MB of ram, but I cant manage to use it, nvidia-settings does not detect it, like it's not usable (but is there) My questions are the following: How can I manage to get the On board VGA display to work together with the PCIe graphics card? If possible, how can I recover those 400 MB the on board card is taking (even without being used) or how can I get it to use the PCIe card available memory? very long boot up with Ubuntu 10.04.4

I installed Ubuntu 10.04.3 on Atom. Then I do the update and upgrade with: #apt-get update #apt-get upgrade #apt-get dist-upgrade The system can boot up now but in almost 2 minutes. After power on and system test, it will stop at "Verifying DMI pool data" for 10 seconds before the GRUB menu comes up. Then after the choosing of one item, to the start up of OS there is 100 seconds of black screen. The start up after that is normal and the operations in the system is also normal. I am concerned with if it is of hardware problem, or just some problem with the kernel. Also I want to know after "Verifying DMI pool data" what is done? And after we choose an item in GRUB menu, what does the system do? And where can I see the procedure of the whole boot up? Twitter API Voting System

So I blatantly got this idea from the MIX 10 event. At MIX they held a rockband talent competition type thing (I’m not quite sure of all the details). But the interesting part for me is how they collected votes. They used Twitter (what else, when you have a few thousand geeks available to you). The basic idea was that you tweeted your vote with a # tag, i.e #ROCKBANDVOTE vote Richard How cool…. So the question is how do you write something to collate and count all the votes? Time to press the magic Visual Studio new Project button… Twitter has a really nice API that can be invoked from .NET.
