• Rebind Alt key to win using setxkbmap?

  Hi, After an hour or two of manpage and Google searching and finding no solution or good resources, I've come for help! I have set my Caps Lock key to Ctrl using setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps - this works perfectly fine. However, since I use [awesome][1], and an IBM model M which lacks the meta key, I need my left alt key to replace the windows key. Using xkeycaps I was able to get this to work, except it killed my arrow keys and End. Problematic. Unfortunately, documentation on setxkbmap options are sparse. and I can't find the proper option to use. Thanks for any links/solutions.

• I need a webpage to host my javascript!

  Does anyone know a website that hosts javascripts on their page? I have a research project that needs to collect some RTT from all over the world and compare them together. I have written the javascript code for that but I do not have a high hit rate website to put it on to collect data. I know it is a little bit odd question to ask, but do you know any website or any trick that can help me? Note that the script would not do any harm to anybody! :-) Thanks, Decad is right, I basically need some people to put my script on their "high-hit rate" website ... so I can collect data from large number of clients... Of coarse, the script is run on the background with no harm to the page. It basically measures some RTT and submit it to a server. I already have some pages, but they barely got a hit from outside! • 410 Responses when your CMS host doesn't support them?

  Sending a 410 responses for a page that no longer exist should make Google stop crawling for that page. The site I am working on has been recently migrated, and very little of the content was migrated. I've already turned the existing content into 301 redirects (the content that is on both the old and the new site), but now I would like to flush the old content from Google's memory by placing 410 responses in it's path when it returns to crawl for them and finds a 404 response. However, I asked our CMS host about it, and they said that our CMS does not support 410 responses. Is there some other way to post a 410 response, like making a dead link 301 redirect to a page that a 410 response in the form of a meta tag?

• SEO optimisation problems after Google Panda [on hold]

  I am currently trying to improve a website's SEO after it took quite a hit from the Google Panda upgrades. What are the main things I need to look at improving when trying to improve its ranking in Google? I have already made sure that the pages validate to W3C Standards, minimized css and js and done the obvious meta tags and header optimization but this hasn't made any difference yet. It could possibly be a content issue as the pages currently read much like a brochure and there were some pages with just a video and no text content on them which is also an issue. I've added a rel="nofollow" attribute to the links to these pages although i'm told this doesn't really work anymore. If anyone has any ideas let me know. Cheers!

• Pros and cons of using Grails compared to pure Groovy

  Say, you (by you I mean an abstract guy, any guy in your team) have experience of writing and building java web apps, know about filters, servlet mappings and so on, and so on. Also, let us assume you know pretty well any sql db, no matter which one exactly, whether it mysql, oracle or psql. At last, let pretend we know Groovy and its standard libraries, for example all that JsonBuilder and XmlSlurper stuff, so we don't need grails converters. The question is - what are benefits of using grails in this case. I'm not trying to start flame war, I'm just asking to compare - what are ups and downs of grails development compared to pure groovy one. For instance, off the top of my head I can name two pluses - automatic DB mapping and custom gsp tags. But when I want to write a modest app which provides small API for handling some well defined set of data, I'm totally OK with groovy's awesome SQL support. As for gsp, we does not use it at all, so we are not interested in custom tags as well.

  Possible Duplicate: Can an agile shop every really score 12 on the Joel Test? I really like the Joel test, use it myself, and encourage my staff and interviewees to consider it carefully. However I don't think I can ever score more than 9 because a few points seem to contradict the Agile Manifesto, XP and TDD, which are the bedrocks of my world. Specifically the questions about schedule, specs, testers and quiet working conditions run counter to what we are trying to create and the values that we have adopted in being genuinely agile. So my question is whether it is possible for a true Agile shop to score 12? [Note: I had this question closed on meta so I have re-posted here]

  Hi all. Does anyone know of a hosted version of Yahoo! Answers (or Stackoverflow/Superuser) that I could integrate with my site? I know that there are some open-source implementations (see http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2267/stack-overflow-clones?page=1&tab=votes#tab-top) but I'd rather have some hosted if possible. I know there is http://stackexchange.com/ as well, but I really want some tight integration with the rest of my site. Failing that, has anyone got any experience with the open source versions? • Are there any resources on how to identify problems that could best be solved with templates?

  I decided to improve my knowledge in template meta-programming. I know the syntax and rules and been playing with counteless examples from online resources. I understand how powerful templates can be and how much compile time optimization they can provide but I still cant "think in templates", I can't seem to know by myself if a certain problem could be best solved with templates and if it can, how to adapt that problem to templates. Is there some kind of online resource or book that teaches how to identify problems that could best be solved with templates and how to adapt that problem?

• Correct definition of the term "Yak Shaving"

  The wiktionary has two different definitions: Any apparently useless activity which, by allowing you to overcome intermediate difficulties, allows you to solve a larger problem. The actually useless activity you do that appears important when you are consciously or unconsciously procrastinating about a larger problem. This post defines it as: yak shaving is what you are doing when you're doing some stupid, fiddly little task that bears no obvious relationship to what you're supposed to be working on, but yet a chain of twelve causal relations links what you're doing to the original meta-task. I personally prefer the final definition because it contains the word "fiddly" which I think perfectly describes a typical yak shaving task. What is the best definition you've come across or can provide?

• Opensource showcase for MVC in Java Swing

  I've allready created small desktop CRUD applications using Java/Swing. In hindsight I'm not quite sure if the overall design of these applications is good. I've also done some reading on MVC and looked at different Swing-tutorials. My problem is, that I've got a very theroatical knowledge of MVC and on the other hand, most Swing-resources don't implement the MVC-pattern. Now I would like to get my hands dirty and see how MVC is implemented in Swing in a real-world-application. Are there any opensource project you could recommend? It would be also interesting to have more than one project, to see different approaches. Best fit would be a software, that uses a relational database in the backend, to see an overall design, that I can compare to my former applications.

• Getting rid of getting stuck often [closed]

  I have been working with C# and .NET for around 2-3 years. But, still i get stuck too often. My project includes few simple websites(asp.net) in the early parts and then a desktop application for cotton transaction management(wpf). And right now, I am building a price compare website (asp.net MVC). Along the lines, I have read quite few books on C# and .NET, but still I get stuck very often. What pisses me is that the problems I get stuck in aren't very typical or hard. You can get a better idea by visiting my questions page on SO. After looking at my question lists, do you also feel that my basis or knowledge as a programmer are weak ? If so, How can i find a remedy to this problem ?   Earlier, I asked a question about how to measure the quality of a project. The outcome of that question was that the quality of the project can be divided into two parts: Internal quality (code quality, measurable by code quality metrics) External quality (Acceptance test, how well the software meets the requirements) So based on that, I want to set up some research and validate the outcome of the project. The problem is, I will conduct this research on my own, so it's not possible to run the project once in BDD style and the other one in waterfall by myself. It's also not possible to compare BDD and waterfall projects on a larger scale, due to the fact that there are not enough BDD projects that can be measured because of the age of BDD. So, my question is: did anybody face this problem? How could I execute my experiment in such a way that it is of scientific value?

• Rendering performance in FlasCC + UDK when compared to Stage3d and UDK on Windows?

  Adobe recently released the Flash C++ Compiler, which UDK uses to target Flash Player. Developers can now access UDK for browser applications. Does this mean greater performance than using a Stage3D engine (Away3D 4) and how much of a noticeable difference in performance would it make in rendering speeds? Is there any benchmark you could propose that would allow to compare them fairly? I am asking this to help myself understand the consequences in performance for deciding to use UDK in a browser based game. I would also like to know how it compares with UDK running natively in Windows? I am not asking which technology to use or which is better. Only interested in optimizing rendering speed in a 3d browser game with flash.

• Removing existing filtered pages from Google's index: noindex / 301 / canonical to non-filtered page?

  I've decided to remove some of my site's pages from the Google index to focus more of the indexed pages on higher quality pages. The pages I'm going to remove are already in the index. These removed pages are filtered pages which will continue to exist, I just don't want them in the google index because they add little quality to the same page without any filter selected. I've added in webmaster tools specification of narrow for the parameters that set these filters, but it doesn't seem this changes anything in how he handles these pages. So I'm considering three options: Adding <meta name="robots" content="noindex" /> to the html header of these filtered pages 301 to the non-filtered page that contains the most similar information and will remain in the index Canonical tag. Which I'm not sure is exactly the mainstream use case, as these aren't really the same pages. Which should I use?

• Setting up collision using a tilemap and cocos2d

  I'm building my first platformer using cocos2d and a tilemap. I'm having trouble coming up with a decent way of determining if the character is colliding with an object. More specifically, in which direction is the character colliding with an object. Following the tutorial here, I have made a separate "meta" layer of collidable tiles. The problem is that unless the character is in the tile, you can't detect the collision. Also, there's no way of telling WHERE the collision is occurring. The best solution would be one that could tell me if a character is up against a wall, or walking on top of a platform. However, I can't seem to figure out a good technique for this.

• Is it possible to know impressions of other websites?

  Google Webmasters's dashboard gives you a big number which is called impressions, and by definition that I've seen in Google Analytics, it means the total number of times your site has been become eligible for SERPs. I just don't have an idea how to invest on this number, and how much its increase or decrease mean to me, because I can't compare it with other websites. I mean, if the impressions of say site a.com is 150,000, and mine is 50,000, then maybe I can confer that I need to triple my efforts to reach to a.com. But by seeing 50,000 alone I have no clue at all of how to interpret it. Is there any service or other way to know about the impressions Google gives to other sites?

• Strange GTK3 issue with Audacious and Evince (Document Viewer)

  I find that, in some GTK3 apps such as Audacious and Evince (Document Viewer), parts of the UI are pure black, which looks ugly and out-of-place. It is not intentional, as the screenshots on both websites show the app looking different. I only have this issue with the Adwaita GTK theme, but since it comes with Gnome 3 and is the main theme these apps are designed for, I'm guessing the problem is not simply the theme having some bug (though the Ubuntu package might). I have had this issue on two laptops now, running both Ubuntu 12.04 and Xubunu 12.10 with Gnome Shell and Adwaita. The screenshots below show the problem: Audcious's is visible in the search area around the text box, and behind the playlist tabs, and Evince's is visible in more or less the same position and around the document itself. • How to handle possible duplicate content across multiple sites?

  Let's say I have two sites that cover the same vertical/topic. one in the USA and one in Canada. Both sites have local-related content, which is obviously unique by location. However they will share common news or blog pages. How do I avoid getting hit with duplicate content on both sites for those news/blog pages? If the content is exactly the same, I'm guessing I would have to pick which site's content I want to noindex,nofollow, is that correct, and if so, is that all I have to add on the URL links to those pages, and the pages' meta tags?

• How do I verify the ownership of a domain from Namecheap to use Google Apps?

  I registered a domain with Namecheap.com, and started the Google Apps registration process. After the initial data filling, google apps wishes me to prove the ownership of a domain, and has given me 4 choices: Add a DNS record to your domain's configuration Link to your Google Analytics account Upload an HTML file to your server Add a meta tag to your site's home page What is the differences between these, and how do I (if someone knows perhaps how to do it on Namecheap, it would be even better) complete this step in the process? I would appreciate any advice you might have.
