• setup advanced filtering and access restrictions on dd-wrt using iptables

  I have a linksys WRT54GL router with a DD-WRT installed and I want to setup some advanced filtering that seem to not be available through "Access restrictions" web gui option. I guess I would be using IPTABLES then. I have ssh access to router and can run iptables, but I'm not so experienced with iptables. So here are my needs: my policy would be deny all first and then allow exceptions allow all http (port 80) access to WAN through wireless allow all other traffic only to PCs with specific MAC addresses allow internet access to PC with specific MAC address according to schedule (let's say everyday between 18:00-21:00) is this possible to setup with IPtables? could somebody help me a bit with it? or should go and RTFM?

• Access NFS share from cygwin?

  We have a Windows 2003 Server on which we have installed Microsoft's Services for UNIX, and we have mounted a few NFS shares that contain shared resources that we need to access from this box. When I log in to this server with remote desktop, I am able to browse the contents of the NFS shares and everything works fine. However, one use case that we have is that we need to access this server using SSH, and still be able to access the NFS shares. We are running the Cygwin SSH daemon to provide SSH access to the server, but for some reason when we log in to the Windows 2003 server using SSH we can no longer access the NFS shares. To demonstrate, here is the output of the 'mount' command, first from a Cygwin shell when logged in with remote desktop: $ mount C:/cygwin/bin on /usr/bin type ntfs (binary,auto) C:/cygwin/lib on /usr/lib type ntfs (binary,auto) C:/cygwin on / type ntfs (binary,auto) C: on /cygdrive/c type ntfs (binary,posix=0,user,noumount,auto) O: on /cygdrive/o type nfs (binary,posix=0,user,noumount,auto) P: on /cygdrive/p type nfs (binary,posix=0,user,noumount,auto) Z: on /cygdrive/z type nfs (binary,posix=0,user,noumount,auto) And now, the same 'mount' command when logged in with SSH: $ mount C:/cygwin/bin on /usr/bin type ntfs (binary,auto) C:/cygwin/lib on /usr/lib type ntfs (binary,auto) C:/cygwin on / type ntfs (binary,auto) C: on /cygdrive/c type ntfs (binary,posix=0,user,noumount,auto) Notice the missing O: P: and Z: NFS shares in the latter.   Hi, Is it possible to split a large file into smaller files on Windows 2003 using a tool provided/supported/sanctioned by Microsoft? I see that there are a lot of freeware tools (various zip tools) for this task, but I need to move files off of a production server, thus would like to avoid tools I don't know if I can trust. I would much prefer some tool included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools or something along those lines. Does such a tool exist? Thank you.

• Numbering equations based on chapter numbers in MS-Word

  I am seeking for a way to number each equation based on the chapter numbers. The number should be placed at the right side of the equation and the equation should be center-aligned. Something like this: (The bounding box around 2.3 is not necessary). I found this article that do this in a tricky way. Sadly it has some problems when I use multilevel numbering for Headings. To conclude, I am looking for a way to numbers equations that: The numbering is formatted as N-M that N is chapter number and M is equation number. equation is placed in center-aligned number is placed in the right side of equation There should be a way to cross-reference each numbered equation. • MS Outlook Voting mismatch

  I did send out an Outlook vote to hundreds of employees, using their email address (which is mostly [email protected], but there are many exceptions). The incoming votes are not matched against the email address, but against the display name. Unfortunately, the display name has no real standard either. So instead of seeing this: [email protected] Voted: Yes [email protected] Voted: No I see this: [email protected] [email protected] Doe, Johnathan Philip Voted: Yes Doe - Peeters, Marian Voted: No In the actual list I see the addresses that I sent the vote to PLUS extra lines with the votes that came back. Is there a quick way to match my "send" list with the "received" list? One thing I thought of was to dump the global address book in a file and in Excel use =vlookup. But that seems a lot of work (and I am not even sure that I have the authorization to dump the address book).

• Update MS Windows XP via batch script

  Is it possible to update WXP using a batch script? Basically, I would like to run a batch script, which installs all important updates in the background accepting any dialog boxes which need user interaction. EDIT 1: I know I can enable the "Automatically download and install" option to do this, but I have about 100 computers to do, so it would be nice if it can be done via a batch file. That way, I can use the software we already have to run a batch file on all computers with a single click.

• MS project publishing to TFS web portal display

  So, when we initially created our MPP schedule, I made use of indends / subordinates to break down the project by the various stages of the lifecycle, which is fine... no issues there... But now that I'm trying to publish this over to TFS display, it'll only pick up the actual "action items / sub-tasks" seeing as I have resource allocation specified. So for example I have an "Analysis" phase with a few items underneath, and "System Requirements" phase with the same items, so when I publish these to TFS, it won't display the "Parent" distinction between items, so both "Tasks" instances are being published in TFS under the exact same name... So, if I can't do this Automatically, I'll likely have edit each tasks with "Analysis - Item 1", "Analysis - item 2", "SRD - Item 1", "SRD - item 2"... is there a way to do this automatically, or will have to go the manual route??

• Understanding Authorized Access to your Google Account

  I'm having trouble understanding what I'm am granting to sites when they have "Authorized Access to my Google Account." This is how I see what has authorized access: Log into gmail. Click on the link that is my name in the upper-right corner, and from the drop-down select Account. From the list of links to the left, select Security. Click on Edit next to Authorized applications and sites. Authenticate again. At the top of the page, I see a set of sites that have authorized access to my account in various ways. I'm having trouble finding out information about what is being told to me here. There's no "help" link anywhere on the page and my Google searches are coming up unproductive. From the looks of what I see there, Google has access to my Google calendar. I feel comfortable about that, I think. But other sites have authorization to "Sign in using your Google account". My question is, what exactly does that authorization mean? What do the sites that have authorization to "Sign in using my Google account" have the power to do? I hope that this simply means that they authorize using the same criterion that gmail does. I assume that this doesn't grant them the ability to access my email. Can someone please calm my paranoia by describing (or simply pointing me to a site that describes) what these terms mean exactly? Also, if you have any thoughts about the safety of this feature, please share. Thanks!

Now while developing the application using the Visual Studio 2008 then Developer Web Server it provides when build the site was able to access the location. However when the site is deployed on the IIS its saying Unable to access the file because of insufficient permissions. • Cannot view dates of emails(no date field), in my CSV file exported from MS Outlook

  I am using Outlook 2010 - I have my emails showing in there. and exported my emails, into a csv file. (file..options..advanced...export..export to a file.. I have opened that csv file in excel Here is a list of the fields it shows. I see "Date" doesn't appear among them. • MS Windows issue - "Filename or extension is too long"

  I run Microsoft windows on a few of my machines. I don't know if many people know about this issue in the OS but you can't have very long filenames, from what I know Linux can have longer names, I have never run into this issue on my Linux machines. Anyway I run into issues whenever copying folders & files to backup drives. I manually backup of my data, finding and changing names of files, this is very very tedious. Is there a software tool to shorten folders or filenames that are found to be to long on Windows? I have drive image duplication software which does the job but in a way that I don't like, plus moving files can become a hassle at times if the names are too long to copy.

• Conflicts with MS Office temporary files when using Offline Folders on Vista

  We are using Offline Folders feature of Windows Vista to make files on network shares available when out of office. Mostly it is working, but every time I do a sync I get a lot of such errors: D500E7B8.tmp - A file was deleted on this computer and changed on the server while this computer was offline. There are hundreds of them. I always select all of them and choose resolution "Delete from both locations". But what is causing this and how can I avoid it? I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save.   I want Microsoft Word 2010 to force split words exactly where the line ends, even if it is "wrong and unreadable". Font is some monotype (Courier New). The text is in Text field which has fixed width. I found some option in Text field Format - Wrap lines inside. But it only disables / enables whole wrapping. The text will be printed over uniform spaced boxes, each for one letter (postal order). Examples: Current: some text with | looooooooooong word | What i want: some text with looooooo | oooong word | I tried to google it for an hour, but everybody wants the exact opposite (hard spaces etc..)

  I'm having trouble with my new server and accessing its directories. I updated my proftpd.conf with: DefaultRoot / No I'm able to see the root directory of my server. But, trying to access some directories gives different results. For example, I can access /vars but I can't access /home or /root How can I overcome this? • Linux program unable to access files in group

  I'm having trouble configuring things on linux so that a program can access certain files. Let's call it pgm A. It has uid uA and gid gA. In addition, uid uA is listed in /etc/group as a member of group gX. The problem is that pgm A cannot access files for which the uid is root and the gid is gX, but only when pgm A is called from another program, pgm B, which also runs as user uA. If I su as user uA and run pgm A from bash, it has no problem accessing files in group gX. But if another program, pgm B, which also runs as user uA, forks and execs pgm A, pgm A cannot access the files. I've verified that pgm A is indeed running as user uA, group gA, when launched from pgm B. So, if uA is a member of group gX, why can't the program access files which are readable by group gX? It's as if the operating system is ignoring the fact that user uA is also in group gX.

• Script to mirror MS SQL Server databases between 2 servers

  Hi I have about 200 sites each of which have 2 servers running MSSQL (2k5 at some sites, 2k8 at others) One server is production and the other is primarily there as a backup. We're rebuilding all of these servers this year and as part of that we will have to set up mirroring for ... a lot ... of databases. Some of these sites have 45 databases so mirroring them manually is going to be a huge pain. I was going to write a batch script which uses SQLCMD to backup the database and log, copies to the secondary server, restores the backup and log with norecovery, creates the endpoints and sets the partner. This in itself isn't too complicated, but i'd love to see what other people have done as i'm not very confident in catching errors using the process i've outlined above. I've seen Tools to manage sql 2008 database mirroring? Which looks really good, but the formatting is jumbled and I can't get it to work. If anyone has any other scripts they've written and are willing to share I'd be eternally grateful. Ideally I'd love to be able to use a script to ensure there are matching endpoints (same ports) on both servers, backup the database, backup the log, copy the backups to second server, restore database and log with norecovery, set the partners on both servers, and somehow confirm that the databases are linked and synchronized. • Pre-load MS Windows right-click menus and Start menu at startup

  Hello brainy people. On my WinXP SP3 laptop (1.4Ghz 1.2GB ram), after I first log in, when I right-click in Windows Explorer and choose New, the submenu can take up to 15 seconds to load, which is a pain in the ass when you want to do a quick easy operation. After the submenu has loaded the first time, subsequent loads perform instantly, obviously as the menu has been cached. My question is: can these right-click menus (and the Start menu, which also takes some time to load the first time) be pre-loaded at Windows startup? Thanks.
