• How to write C++ audio processing applications?

  Hi everyone, I'm an Electronics and Telecommunications student, next to my graduation. I'm gonna work on a project that involves my knowledge about DSP, music and audio in general. I allready know all the basic mathematic instruments and all the stuff I need to manage it, such as FFT, circular convolution ecc ecc. I want to learn C++ programming basically for one reason: it's very important in the professional world!!! And I think it's one of the most used to write applications working with audio, especially when it's about real time processing. Ok, after this small introduction I would like to know first, which are the most used libraries to work with audio processing in c++?? I was longer looking on the web but i couldn't find a lo of working stuff. (I work under linux with eclipse CDT enviroment). Then I would like to know if there are good sources to learn how to write some working code, such as for example how to write a simple low pass filter. Basically now i will not write real time applications, I would like to start from the processing of a WAV file, or even better an MP3 file, so basically on vectors of samples. Let's say that basically for now I would like to extract the waveform from an audio file, and save it to a thumbnail or to a PNG image. Ok, for now I think it's all I would need. Any ideas, advices, libraries, books, interesting sources about that? Thanks a lot in advance for any kind of answer. Giovanni.

• Suckerfish Menu Not Working. Nested UL not displaying block

  I'm going out of my mind with this one. I'm trying to build a suckerfish css drop down menu. I have the first level working ok but I can't get the nested ul (under the Glossary tab) to display in block format and show my a background color. I've been at this for three days and I'm about to go crazy. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. • Verizon SongID - How is it programmed?

  For anyone not familiar with Verizon's SongID program, it is a free application downloadable through Verizon's VCast network. It listens to a song for 10 seconds at any point during the song and then sends this data to some all-knowing algorithmic beast that chews it up and sends you back all the ID3 tags (artist, album, song, etc...) The first two parts and last part are straightforward, but what goes on during the processing after the recorded sound is sent? I figure it must take the sound file (what format?), parse it (how? with what?) for some key identifiers (what are these? regular attributes of wave functions? phase/shift/amplitude/etc), and check it against a database. Everything I find online about how this works is something generic like what I typed above. From audiotag.info This service is based on a sophisticated audio recognition algorithm combining advanced audio fingerprinting technology and a large songs' database. When you upload an audio file, it is being analyzed by an audio engine. During the analysis its audio “fingerprint” is extracted and identified by comparing it to the music database. At the completion of this recognition process, information about songs with their matching probabilities are displayed on screen.

• How should I start playing with 3D

  I'm a developer for just about 6 months now, and since I enjoy programming I make a couple of little programs. I've started making encripters, calculators, tools, stuff to play with DropBox (hehe), stuff that play with bitmaps, drawing graphics, and even a program to update the MSN display image according to the artwork of the music you're listening yo on iTunes. Now I kind of ran off ideas of programs to deal with information, and I've had an idea: play around with 3d! so I've read a little about it and figured I'd have to have good notions on position and math on point spacial position (which I do, from my 3d modelling experience), but I don't know how to use API's for it, so I've 'simulated' simple 3d with a simple program I've made (it's just a spinning cube, please, first one to open it, comment here stating that it's safe, i've got no reason to harm anyone's pc.) One of my other hobbies is 3d modelling (completly amateur) and I'd like to mix these hobbies together! Here are some questions: 1) What would be a nice 3d development tool for a .NET programmer like me? 2) Is there a way of using 3d models made in 3DS Max ? (I intend on modelling characters) 3) What knowledges should I have in order to render it, and move it areound ? 4) Which API should I use ? NOTE: Not a dupe, I'm asking for directions specific for .NET development possibly using 3ds MAX, and there are no questions about it!

• Adjust size of MPMediaPickerController's view ?

  In my application I don't use the upper bar that displays Wi-Fi/Date/Time because it's a game. However I need to be able to let my user to pick his music, so I'm using a MPMediaPickerController. The problem is, that when I present my controller, the controller ends up leaving a 10 pixels ( aprox ) bar at the top of the screen, just in the place the Wi-Fi/Date/Time bar, should be present. • Does acts-as-taggable-on work on heroku?

  Hello, I have a question: does the acts-as-taggable-on gem work on Heroku? I'been trying but it doesn't seem to work. In my development machine works okay. I'm wondering if it's maybe because Heroku uses PostgreSQL and my local env SQLite and for some reason postgresql is not supported by the special tagging "magic"? I couldn't find any related info to this, so I would like to know other experiences with this. I guess is pretty rare since both the gem and heroku are very popular. • javascript scope problem when lambda function refers to a variable in enclosing loop

  First question on stackoverflow :) Hope I won't embarrass myself... I have a javascript function that loads a list of albums and then it creates a list item for each album. The list item should be clickable, so I call jQuery's click() with a function that does stuff. I do this in a loop. My problem is that all items seem to get the same click function, even though I try to make a new one that does different stuff in each iteration. Another possibility is that the iteration variable is global somehow, and the function refers to it. • call addsubview again causes slowdown

  hi guys, i am writing a little music-game for the iphone. I am almost done, this is the only issue which keeps me from rolling it out. any help to solve this is much appreciated. this is what i do: at my appDelegate I add my menu-view-screen to the window. the menu-view-screen acts as a container and controls which view gets presented to the user. means, on the menu-view-screen I got 4 buttons (new game, options, faq, highscore). when the user clicks on a button something as this happens: if (self.gameViewController == nil) { GameViewController *viewController = [[GameViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"GameViewController" bundle:nil]; self.gameViewController = viewController; [viewController release]; } [self.view addSubview:self.gameViewController.view]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(handleSwitchViewNotificationFromGameView:) name:@"SwitchView" object:gameViewController]; when the user returns to the menu, this piece of code gets executed: [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] removeObserver:self]; [self.gameViewController viewWillDisappear:YES]; [self.gameViewController.view removeFromSuperview]; this works fine for all screens but not for the gamescreen(well this is the only one with heaps of user-interaction) means the responsiveness of the iphone(when playing tones) gets really slow. The performance is fine when I display the gameview for the first time. it starts getting slower as soon as I add it to the menu-views-container-subviews again (addsubview) (basically open up a new game) any ideas what causes(or to get around) this? thanks heaps Best regards Tom

• Getting my foot in the SCADA door, how?

  I keep hearing that I should learn SCADA and its PLC language to upgrade my career. While I enjoy currently being a web and mobile development privateer, the prospects of working for a municipality or industrial entity has its appeals (since I am trying to grow a family). Over the years, I've tought myself to skillfully use php, javascript, java, perl, awk, bash. Surely, these language skills can tranfer somewhat to SCADA's logic controller language. Without any formal training in CS (music major!) other than at the workplace, I wouldn't have been able to pick up those languages and run with them had it not been for their open documentation and free-to-install or already-installed interpreters/compilers. I can't see that this is true with SCADA, and I'm hoping that I'm wrong. Ideally, I'd like to be able to apply for a job that requires [A,B,C] and suggest that they hire me because I already know [A & B]; that they wouldn't have to do a ground-up training with someone that's never programmed before. So, finally, the question; How do I "learn" SCADA? Are there sites and docs? What's going to help me get my foot in the door? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

• SQLite for personal use

  What are the applications for your personal use that needs a small database like SQLite? I am thinking of trying a few popular databases and SQLite is surely the first one I am planning to try since I know barely nothing about database except some simple programming years ago. I learned that SQLite is good for personal use. But embarrassingly I do not see any application except maybe managing my list of phone numbers/contact info, which has probably a few hundred items. What's your experience? FYI, I use EndNote for my reference and softcopy of books, and I feel iTunes' music/media management is ok since I am not a frequent user anyway. And others? I do lots of coding, but I just use some simple etags tools for that. And I pretty much use .txt file (sometimes in the asciidoc style) for my notes. I have quite a bunch of notes, but not that many either. So, really, what are your personal applications that need a small database instead of existing tools and plain text files?

• Why is Chrome miscalculating jQuery submenu dimensions?

  I'm trying to implement this dropdown menu with flyouts: http://jsfiddle.net/chunkymonkey/fr6x4/ In Chrome certain categories can be expanded to show their subcategories while others show nothing when opened up. For example: Alternative Rock can be expanded to show its multiple subcategories . . . BUT . . . World Music, which has as many subcategories, shows no subcategories when expanded. • Ultra-Portable Laptop or Tablet PC for Development and Sketching

  I am a software developer that primarily writes in PHP, [X]HTML, CSS, Javascript, C# and C++. I use Eclipse for web development, Visual Studio 2008 for C++ and C# work, TortoiseSVN, Subversion server for local repositories, SQL Server Express, Apache and MYSQL. I also use Office 2007 for word processing and spreadsheets and use Vista Ultimate 64 as my primary operating system. The only other things I do on my laptop are watch movies, surf the internet and listen to music. I currently have a Acer Aspire 5100 (1.4 GHz AMD Turion X2, 2 GB of RAM and a 15.4" screen). This thing does not cut it in performance or portability, and in addition, my DVD drive failed. And before anybody posts about vista: I have had XP Professional 32 on it for the last two years, and recently upgraded to Vista 64. It is actually faster (with areo disabled) then XP; so it is not the OS that is causing the laptop to be slow. I usually sketch a lot, for explaining things, developing user interfaces and software architecture. Because of my requirements, I was thinking about a Lenovo X61 Tablet PC. It outperforms my current laptop, is significantly more portable, and... is a tablet. My question is: do any other software developers use this (or other tablets) for programming? Does it help to be able to sketch on the computer itself? And is it capable of being a good development machine? Will it handle the above software listed? If not, what is the best ultra-portable laptop that is good for programming? Or are ultra-portable laptops even good for programming? I could manage with my 15.4" screen, but am spoiled by my two 19" at my home desktop and my job's workstation.

• Need help with a PHP proxy script

  I’m currently working on a small web app that allows people to search for music album covers. However, I’m having a problem getting my PHP proxy to work. Right now I’m using a simple PHP proxy script to grab the HTML from Google’s image result page, and parse it to find the first image result (I can’t use the image search API because it doesn’t offer the parameters that I need to use). I know that the PHP script works in some way, because I’ve used it to grab XML data across domains, so I also assume that since I’m trying to grab HTML that’s what’s causing the error. • ObjectiveFlickr - how to call getSizes on a photo ID not known until the response?

  Hi guys, I'm building a free music instrument iPhone app with the Flickr API and ObjectiveFlickr.A random photo from the interestingness list is displayed in the background, but I can't center it without knowing its size. (so I can reset the UIWebView frame) I've been researching this for awhile, and if the answer is super easy, please have some mercy on a noob - it's my first time playing with a web service API. =) Since I don't know the photo ID until after I receive the response from the interestingness feed, how would I call flickr.photo.getSizes on the response? • Android - Temporal & Ancestral Navigation with ViewPager & Fragments

  I'm trying to work out the best way to implement the 'ancestral' and 'temporal' navigation (utilising the up button and back buttons), for a music player I'm working on. Currently, the user is presented with a viewpager, and can page between three main fragments (ArtistMain, AlbumMain and SongMain). Upon choosing an item inside that view, a fragment transaction occurs, and the viewpager goes out of view, replaced by a new fragment (AlbumSub, Songsub or player, depending on where the user came from). The user can then navigate deeper, until a song is chosen, and then they are taken to the 'player' screen. I guess the question is: How do I implement all of this conditional navigation? I'm fairly new to android and programming in general, and I just can't seem to come up with an efficient way to achieve this. At the moment, as each fragment is brought into view, the app is checking to see where the user just came from, and then determines where the user should be taken if back or home is called. This means I have a booleans like "fromArtistMain", "fromAlbumSub", and I'm checking for things like "fromSongSub && fromPlayer".. it's all turning into a bit of a mess. I've drawn a diagram (in paint, sorry!!), to depict the navigation I'm trying to achieve. The yellow represents the 'up' button press, the red is the 'back' button press, and blue is just normal navigation. The green arrows are meant to represent the view paging: Any advice is welcome.   Hi, I'm trying to understand how can I do to let my site be reachable from google image search spiders. I like how last.fm solution, and I thought to use a technique like his staff do to let google find artists images on their pages. When I'm looking for an artist and I search it on google image search, as often as not I find an image from last.fm artists page, I make an example: If I search the band Pure Reason Revolution It brings me here, the artist's image page http://www.last.fm/music/Pure+Reason+Revolution/+images/4284073 Now if I take a look to the image file, i can see it's named: http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/4284073/Pure+Reason+Revolution+4.jpg so if I try to undertand how the service works I can try to say: http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/ the server who serve the images 500/ the selected size for the image 4284073/ the image id for database Pure+Reason+Revolution+4.jpg the image name I thought it's difficult to think the real filename for the image is Pure+Reason+Revolution+4.jpg for image overwrite problems when an user upload it, in fact if I digit: http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/4284073.jpg I probably find the real image location and filename With this tecnique the image is highly reachable from search engines and easily archived. My question is, does exist some guide or tutorial to approach on this kind of tecniques, or something similar?

• How does someone without a CS degree get an interview in a sluggish economy?

  I've been programming off and on since 4th grade (for about 20 years). Technology is one of my passions but after working in the field for a couple years out of High School, I spent nine months and $15,000 getting an accredited certificate in music performance instead of CS. I've been doing lots of self study but I think a CS degree is overkill for most line of business applications. Even so, HR departments can't be expected to know that... How does one get their foot in the proverbial door without a degree, especially in a smaller "fly-over country" market? ...or... Where can I get the cheapest/easiest degree that will pass muster (including testing out of as much as possible)? Don't get me wrong, I'm down with learning new things but I don't necessarily need the expense or coaching to motivate me. (Play the numbers game) Start my own business. (This is a bit challenging for a family man but a very good answer. • How do you parse with SAX using Attributes & Values to a URL path using iPhone SDK?

  I'm trying to get my head around parsing with SAX and thought a good place to start was the TopSongs example found at the iPhone Dev Center. I get most of it but when it comes to reaching Attributes and Values within a node I can't find a good example anywhere. The XML has a path to a URL for the coverArt. • How to eliminate tearing from animation?

  I'm running an animation in a WinForms app at 18.66666... frames per second (it's synced with music at 140 BPM, which is why the frame rate is weird). Each cel of the animation is pre-calculated, and the animation is driven by a high-resolution multimedia timer. The animation itself is smooth, but I am seeing a significant amount of "tearing", or artifacts that result from cels being caught partway through a screen refresh. When I take the set of cels rendered by my program and write them out to an AVI file, and then play the AVI file in Windows Media Player, I do not see any tearing at all. I assume that WMP plays the file smoothly because it uses DirectX (or something else) and is able to synchronize the rendering with the screen's refresh activity. It's not changing the frame rate, as the animation stays in sync with the audio. Is this why WMP is able to render the animation without tearing, or am I missing something? Is there any way I can use DirectX (or something else) in order to enable my program to be aware of where the current scan line is, and if so, is there any way I can use that information to eliminate tearing without actually using DirectX for displaying the cels? Or do I have to fully use DirectX for rendering in order to deal with this problem? Update: forgot a detail. My app renders each cell onto a PictureBox using Graphics.DrawImage. Is this significantly slower than using BitBlt, such that I might eliminate at least some of the tearing by using BitBlt?

• Effective Method to Manage and Search Through 100,000+ Objects Instantly? (C#)

  I'm writing a media player for enthusiasts with large collections (over 100,000 tracks) and one of my main goals is speed in search. I would like to allow the user to perform a Google-esque search of their entire music collection based on these factors: Song Path and File Name Items in ID3 Tag (Title, Artist, Album, etc.) Lyrics What is the best way for me to store this data and search through it? Currently I am storing each track in an object and iterating over an array of these objects checking each of their variables for string matches based on given search text. I've run into problems though where my search is not effective because it is always a phrase search and I'm not sure how to make it more fuzzy. Would an internal DB like SQLlite be faster than this? Any ideas on how I should structure this system? I also need playlist persistence, so that when they close the app and open the app their same playlist loads immediately. How should I store the playlist information so it can load quickly when the application starts? Currently I am JSON encoding the entire playlist, storing it in a text file, and reading it into the ListView at runtime, but it is getting sluggish over 20,000 tracks. Thanks!
