• UPK for Testing Webinar Recording Now Available!

• Tesla Coil Fights Combines Electricity and Choreography [Video]

  We’ve seen quite a few Tesla-coil tricks over the years but never choreographed fighting between two guys balanced on Tesla coils. This definitely falls deeply into the don’t try this at home category–two guys in special suits are standing atop Tesla coils and directing the blasts of electricity at each other in a type of stylized combat. While their suits are clearly acting as Faraday cages to protect them from the electricity, we prefer our Faraday cages to be beefier and not attached directly to our skin. • Google Rolls Out a New and Compact Navigation Bar

  Earlier this spring Google introduced the black navigation bar; now they’ve updated the bar to take up less space and be more useful. Although the black bar is useful in-so-far as it gives you quick access to Google services (useful, of course, only if you use those services) the new navigation bar–seen in the video above–includes an improved layout. Rather than use the bar space to spread out links which the user may or may not use the service links are now tucked into a mouse-over menu accessed by hovering on the Google logo. The majority of the space previously just taken up by links and the black bar itself is now a a search box. • Cross-Browser Extension Installation now Possible with Opera and Google Chrome

  People have been curious if there would be cross-browser compatibility for extensions due to Opera’s recent switch to the browser engine that Google Chrome uses. That question has now been answered. The OMG! Chrome! Blog has put together a nice tutorial on how to get cross-browser extension compatibility set up and working with your browser of choice.   This week Intel debuted prototype palm-reading tech that could serve as a replacement for our current password system. Our question for you today is do you think this is the right direction to go for better security or do you feel this is a mistake? Photo courtesy of Jane Rahman. Needless to say password security breaches have been a hot topic as of late, so perhaps a whole new security model is in order. It would definitely eliminate the need to remember a large volume of passwords along with circumventing the problem of poor password creation/selection. At the same time the new technology would still be in the ‘early stages’ of development and may not work as well as people would like. Long-term refinement would definitely improve its performance, but would it really be worth pursuing versus the actual benefits? • Weblogic - Dynamic Clustering in practice by Andy Overton

  The latest version of Weblogic (12.1.2) includes support for Dynamic Clustering. For more details on what else is new in 12.1.2 see my previous blog post. In this blog post I will look at setting up a dynamic cluster on 2 machines with 4 managed servers (2 on each). I will then deploy an application to the cluster and show how to expand the cluster. What is a dynamic cluster? A dynamic cluster is any cluster that contains one or more dynamic servers. Each server in the cluster will be based upon a single shared server template. The server template allows you to configure each server the same and ensures that servers do not need to be manually configured before being added to the cluster. This allows you to easily scale up or down the number of servers in your cluster without the need for setting up each server manually. Changes made to the server template are rolled out to all servers that use that template. Read the complete article here. • Toolbox Mod Makes the Wii Ultra Portable

  Given the social nature of most Wii games, modifying a toolbox to serve as a Wii briefcase to make toting it to a friend’s house easy is only fitting. Courtesy of tinker SpicaJames, we find this simple but effective toolbox modification. James originally started his search by investigating getting a Pelican case for his Wii and accessories. When he found the $125 price tag prohibitive (as many of us would for such a side project) he sought out alternatives. A cheap $12 toolbox, a little impact foam, and some handy work with a pair of tin snips to cut out shapes for the Wiimotes, and he had a super cheap and easy to pack and unpack Wii briefcase. • Recycle Old Hardware into a Showcase Table

  If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. You could replicate the design with any sort of old hardware that is interesting to look at: memory modules your company is sending off to be recycled, old digital cameras, mechanisms from peripherals headed for the scrap heap, etc. Hit up the link below to see more photos of the table. • New JDeveloper/ADF book hits the bookshelves

  I've just received a nice new copy of Sten Vesterli's book Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development - Made Simple.  I was one of the technical reviewers of the book but I'm looking forward to be able to read it end-to-end in good old fashioned book format this coming week. The book bridges the gap between those existing books that describe Oracle ADF features, and real world ADF development.  So, source control, bug tracking, estimating, testing, security, packaging etc are all covered.  Of course, every project and situation is different so the book could never supply a one-size-fits-all guide, but I think its a good addition to your ADF bookshelf.  I'll hopefully post a full review in the coming weeks. Oh, and congratulations Sten,  having gone through the pain of writing my own ADF book, I take my hat off to anyone who goes through the same journey!
