  • Run QuickTime from command line to export video

    I have a bunch of avi's I am converting to m4v, and I can do this in QuickTime by opening the video and then go 'Save As', select a folder, select the type (iPhone, Movie, etc), blah blah blah. But I have around 100 videos I want to do this with. Command line options? Or batch processing options in the GUI? Enlighten me, please. This is QuickTime X on Snow Leopard.

    I used my ntfs formatted hard drive, copied files from a mac using a bridge program, but now i can't see any of the files on my pc help? I brought it from home, (NTFS HD) found that it was only read only.. so i got a bridge program (don't remember) and was able to copy files from the mac to the hard drive. I took it home and went to get into those files, and they do not even show up.. it copied, and did everything it was supposed to do to let me know it was working, but now i can't find any of those files. am I FUBAR? :(

  • Modifier key bug with Adobe Design Standard CS4 (Mac OS 10.6.6)

    When I launch the Adobe apps, they ask me if I want to delete the preferences file. I say 'no'. Then, when using the apps, none of the tools seem to work properly, eg in Illustrator, I can't move objects without it duplicating the object. Photoshop constantly displays the contextual menu icon that usually only appears when you hold down the control key. I can't do any work in them when this happens, so I am forced to log out and then back in. They work for a while and then this annoying bug happens again. I think it must be to do with the modifier keys (command option and control). I think Adobe's apps must think I'm permanently pressing the modifier keys down - the thing is, no other app on my machine has this problem! Does anyone else experience this? Or have a fix for it? Any suggestions much appreciated. Running: Mac OS X 10.6.6 on an iMac. Adobe CS4 Design standard installed.

  • Can't open cocoa emacs from terminal using open -a

    I installed emacs on my MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.5 from this site http://emacsformacosx.com/. I believe this is what used to be called cocoa emacs. I dragged it into my Application folder and it works fine when I run it from there. I want to be able to run it from the Terminal. After some googling, I tried open -a /Application/Emacs.app foo.txt (foo.txt was and existing file). I got two emacs windows - one with welcome screen and one with foo.txt loaded. I tried a few applications in the /Applications directory and they did not seem to behave like this. I had installed it using my own account (an admin account) so after doing ls -l on /Application I noticed that the owner and group were different from the other entries in this folder. I recursively changed the owner and group to root and wheel, like the others, but this did not help. The only thing that looks funny now is that there that ls -l show a @ character which has something to do with extended attributes but I don't know how to check these. Any suggestions on what to check next? Is using the open command the only to run the program? Can I simulate what it does using a shell script?

  • OS X 10.7.5 - telnet: connect to address 10.0.0.12: Operation not permitted

    I have troubles to connect from macos to reach windows shares and I hit some general problem with my macos. When I try to telnet to 445 port to my windows share server the macos throws "Operation not permitted". I have no firewall rule and I'm not able to google anything. sh-3.2# telnet 10.0.0.12 445 Trying 10.0.0.12... telnet: connect to address 10.0.0.12: Operation not permitted telnet: Unable to connect to remote host Any idea what can be the reason?

  • Mac won't boot into safe mode

    Mac boots fine normally, except when in safe mode. Holding down shift when booting gets me to the progress bar on the grey screen. Progress bar gets about half way before mac reboots. I modified nvram boot-args to get a better look: sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v" It definitely gets through fsck, skips loading kernel extensions (since it's in safe mode), does something with the network interfaces, then this is the last thing it wips through...   • How come my Intel 520 180GB SSD performs extremely poorly?

    I recently installed a new Intel 520 series 180GB SSD in my brand new MacBook Pro. The system is as follows: Model: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 Main Drive Bay: Intel 520-series 180GB SATA-3 (6GB/s negotiated link) SSD (Firmware: 400i) [80GB free] Optical Bay: Toshiba 5400 RPM 750GB SATA-2 HDD Trim: Enabled (according to Trim Enabler App) And here are the speeds I'm getting: Read: 412 MB/s Write: 186 MB/s What have I done wrong? Results expected: Read/write both 500MB/s I have seen benchmarks with lesser SSD:s (SATA-2 even) outperform my write-speeds by far. Also, Intel 520 SSD:s are supposed to be the top class of SSD:s. Trim Enabler report: This looks a bit odd compared to screenshots from their site: These is the defined S.M.A.R.T attributes (taken from Intel): And here are my S.M.A.R.T attributes read using smartctl tool from smartmontools: They don't seem very compatible. I'm going to try and look for a S.M.A.R.T attributes reader tool for OS X which might support Intel 520 series.

  • Arrow keys don't work in htop on OS X in Terminal

    Not sure when it happened, or what I did (if anything), but my arrow keys don't work in htop anymore to scroll around. You should be able to press up and down to scroll up and down the process list, but they don't work. Some keys tend to be the equivalent of 'go back' or something. If I'm on the settings screen, left, up and down all go back to the main screen. htop seems to be the only affected program.

    I run VM Ware Fusion 3 on a Mac Book Pro 17 hooked to a Dell 30 inch screen I CAN manage to get a Resolution of 2560 * 1600 on Mac OS X(MacBook Pro), but can't on Win 7 (on the exact same MacBook Pro) The highest resolution I can get on MS Win 7 is 2048 * 1536 (and I want to be able to set it to 2560 * 1600 to fully enjoy the real estate of my 30 inch screen!)   • How do I make compiling code not bring my system to its knees?

    I have a macbook with snow leopard and 2 gigs of RAM. When I compile C or C++ code, my system becomes all but unusable. For instance, when I compile llvm I notice that there are about 10 or 11 processes (cc1plus) getting launched at a time that suck up my CPU time and memory. Is there any way to maybe make it compile less at one time? I'll gladly wait a while longer to have my system usable while I'm compiling. Or is this something that you just have to live with when compiling C or C++?

  • Mac OS X Finder - Creating New Folder with Right-Click in List View

    I am aware that when using Finder in List view, I can create a new folder by right-clicking on an empty row, and pressing 'New Folder'. However, when I happen to be browsing a folder with quite a lot of files (or just enough to invoke a scrollbar), there are no blank rows, and hence nowhere that I can right-click to create a new folder. This is not a big problem, I am just a whinger who likes consistency and find this frustrating. Yes, I am aware that I can press Shift + Cmd + N, or can simply change the Finder view. BUT, is there a way to do this within list view? Am I missing something obvious? Edit: oh, and I'm using Snow Leopard (version 10.6) :)

  • How to get files that are dragged on Aquamacs (or opened via Quicksilver) to open in the same frame

    In Aquamacs 2.0 preview 6, when opening new files externally (e.g., via Quicksilver or via dragging files on the Aquamacs icon) they always open in new frames (i.e., new windows). I would prefer new files to be opening in the same frame, just in a new buffer (possibly with tabs turned on). I already unchecked the option "Show Buffers in new Frames", but that only seems to affect the behavior of the built-in open command (Command-o). Are there any options for this or some other way to modify this behavior?

After a while on superuser, opening up a new windows for each question that interests me, Expose looks like this: It is of minimal value seeing each preview is so small. I have no hope in hell seeing the contents of each windows. Is there some secret setting or 3rd party application that could fix this for me?

Does anyone have a working login hook that mounts a share that they can post? Or know any issues with mounting shares during login?   • Why do fonts sometimes look "fat" on Mac OS X?

    Sometimes when resuming from suspend, the fonts in Mac OS X look "fatter" than normal. Unfortunately right now I can't get my Macbook Pro to exhibit the "normal" behavior for comparison, it has been abnormal yesterday and today. If I can get screenshots of what I think is 'normal', I'll add them. "Fixing" this has been random. I use an external monitor, and sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in, or even turning it off and back on has worked. Sometimes with the display attached (or not) detecting displays works. Sometimes logging out or rebooting entirely is what it takes. Displays used: Macbook Pro 15" built-in display Dell 27" LCD (2009 model) Software where I see this happen, at least most noticably: Firefox (screenshots below) iTerm Things MacIrssi (screenshots below) I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8.     When I make a software update, the files are downloaded on my MacBook's internal hard disk. How can I set a different hard disk as default? I suppose the files related to the software update are compressed packages that have to be saved, opened and decompressed.   • Mighty Mouse is jumping around on screen

    Hi there, I have a really annoying problem with my mighty mouse since a couple of weeks now. When moving my mouse (mightymouse) sometimes it jumps (about once in 30minutes) directly to a (propably) random spot of my screen. I cleaned the mightymouse several times and there is definately no hair or the like, and the desk is not the problem as well - I have the same problem with my other mighty mouse at home. Since I don't have any other mouse i couldn't test whether this relates to the mighty mouse or the mouse in general. Has anyone experienced such issues as well? Is there a solution?   • Set default open-with app to a Python program on a Mac

    I use the open source application UliPad to edit restructured text files (rst). It is a Python application that I launch via Terminal like so: python32 UliPad.py I have python32 as an alias to the 32bit install of Python on my machine. I have several versions installed. First I would like a way to launch UliPad like other OS X apps. Not really sure how to do this. Secondly, I would like to set all .rst files to be opened with UliPad.py. Is there a way to do this? I know how to choose the default app in Finder but not sure how to choose UliPad as that app.

  • Filesharing mac 10.6 with windows vista

    Ive followed all the tutorials on the net to no avail. I can see my vista pc in finder on the mac but when I click on it tries to connect but fails. The same is true from vista, it can see the mac but i cant connect. Wont even offer a login box. So I tried to troubleshoot by using a 3rd computer with xp. It joined the network and can access both the mac and vista on the same workgroup. Mac sees it and it shows under finder but i cant access it by clicking on the icon i have to access by using the ip of the xp machine...strange. Ive turned off all my firewalls. The fact that xp can connnet to the others and vice versa boggles my mind why vista and mac cant connect directly. Oh and pings indicates the same. I.e. xp has no problem but mac to vista and vice versa fails. Can anyone help.
