• Do abstractions have to reduce code readability?

  A good developer I work with told me recently about some difficulty he had in implementing a feature in some code we had inherited; he said the problem was that the code was difficult to follow. From that, I looked deeper into the product and realised how difficult it was to see the code path. It used so many interfaces and abstract layers, that trying to understand where things began and ended was quite difficult. It got me thinking about the times I had looked at past projects (before I was so aware of clean code principles) and found it extremely difficult to get around in the project, mainly because my code navigation tools would always land me at an interface. It would take a lot of extra effort to find the concrete implementation or where something was wired up in some plugin type architecture. I know some developers strictly turn down dependency injection containers for this very reason. It confuses the path of the software so much that the difficulty of code navigation is exponentially increased. My question is: when a framework or pattern introduces so much overhead like this, is it worth it? Is it a symptom of a poorly implemented pattern? I guess a developer should look to the bigger picture of what that abstractions brings to the project to help them get through the frustration. Usually though, it's difficult to make them see that big picture. I know I've failed to sell the needs of IOC and DI with TDD. For those developers, use of those tools just cramps code readability far too much.

• What PC for programming? [on hold]

  I'm asking this here because I'm looking for some advice on a PC that will be suitable for my needs. I currently have mac's and have rarely used PC's apart from my Vaio laptop, which is on it's way out. I will be using the PC for C# and .NET development. I mainly develop desktop apps using a PC, but I will be doing some ASP.NET as I'm switching from PHP to ASP. The selection of PC's are on here: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/ I have £500, but if I can not spend all of that I'd be happy. I will be doing nothing on the computer apart from C# development (desktop and ASP). Any help would be much appreciated. My applications are not intensive. They are usually automation software for web scraping and marketing purposes.

• SSH new connection begins to hang (not reject or terminate) after a day or so on Ubuntu 13.04 server

I had read a little about it and what i found is-: These sites uses Feeds of the sites data. These sites uses APIs of the sites which are actually provided by those sites. And for some sites which do not have any of these two posibility then the Comparision sites uses web-crawler to crawl their data. This is what i have found out. If you think there is more things to it please do give your own views. But i want to know these for my learning purpose and a little for curiosity- how does they actually matches the crawled data , feeds, and other so that there is no duplicacy. What is the process or algorithms for it. And where should i go to learn these concepts. References for books , articles or anything else.

I could not find a review of www.learnnowonline.com/learndevnow I've been doing research about places that offer .NET / ASP.NET / C# / LINQ / SQL / JQuery video training that provide excellent material for developers. Kind of like a Lynda.com for back end development. However, I have not find one place that offers quality material that is easily accessible for the user, and that is priced competitive. This is what I'm looking for: Online Video tutorials with free future updates (videos that can be accessed on any device ie: android portable devices, mac / ipad, linux machines) Printable courseware (ie PDFs so that you can take notes, print if necessary, and read in a tablet in case you don;t have internet access) labs, and easy to access code Pre/Post Assessments/Exams for each training to keep track of your progress and what you have learned/skills. (Appdev used to offer this but it was way too expensive (thousands for each training ie 1k for each. I paid about five thousand at Appdev, and now I regret that purchase), and after a few years/months the training became obsolete - outdated) I looked at learnnowonline.com/learndevnow but it seems that their courseware / text reference material can only be accessed online, and don't know if their videos work in all mobile devices, and browsers (Safari, Chrome, IE, Opera, Firefox) Also, it seems Appdev not longer exist and now is called " AppDev is now LearnNowPlus : www.learnnowonline.com/appdev That site not longer offers prices. I tried to find reviews but could not find any. Does anyone know, or can share a review about some of these type of online training service providers? I've read a few guides and know how the stack works and how to work with the stack; but don't know why I keep getting the error. It isn't really clear to me why this way is being done on some of the guides I've read. I would assume that myvar is 13 bits?

• Console keyboard input OOP

  I am trying to build a very simple console-based game with a focus on using OOP instead of procedural programming because I intend to build up on that code for more complex projects. I am wondering if there is a design pattern that nicely handles this use case: There is a Player class with a MakeMove() method interacting with the board game. The MakeMove() method has to somehow get the user input yet I do not want to code it into the Player class as this would reduce cohesion and augment coupling. I was thinking of maybe having some controller class handle the sequence of events and thus the calls to keyboard input. However, that controller class would need to be able to handle differently the subclasses of Player (e.g. the AI class does not require keyboard input). Thoughts ?

  Background: I have been watching Douglas Crockford's series of presentation about JavaScript History (which I highly recommend) lately and a one comment of his specifically piqued my attention. The trademark for 'JavaScript' is owned by Oracle History: Due to time constraints at Netscape, the language was literally written in weeks and released in very buggy form. To make it seem more appealing, Netscape picked JavaScript to appeal to the massively growing population of Java developers. Unfortunately, this pissed off Sun and stirred up a lot of controversy between the two organizations. At some point, they came to an agreement whereby Netscape was given permission to use the name as long as Sun owned the trademark. Some people incorrectly refer to JavaScript as ECMAScript because that's where the standard for the language is registered but, aside from it's current marketing-driven label, it doesn't really have a name. Fast Forward Sun goes down only to be swallowed by Oracle, who has no reservations about litigating for profit, now owns the name. So... If Oracle decides and forces JavaScript to take on a new name, what name would best represent the language?

As an example what i have done is that I have an abstract class which implements generic methods. these generic methods take a sql query, a connection string and the Type T as parameters and then construct the data set, populate the object and return it back. This way each business object does not need to have a method to populate it with data or construct its data set. All we need to do is pass the type, the sql query and the connection string and these methods do the rest.I am providing the code sample here. Here are two possible solution I thought: 1) A possible solution could be to make an RPC call to the server during onModuleLoad. This RPC call would generate the necessary Widgets and/or place them on a panel and then return this panel to the client end. 2) Another possible solution could be to make an RPC call on login retrieving from server users roles and inspecting them to see what the user can do. • What markup languages are good for programming articles/tutorials?

  I very much wish to write a programming tutorial in my native language (Latvian). There are far too few of those. I am however unsure on what markup language to use for writing it. Here are a few things I would like to achieve: The same source can be compiled to both HTML for online viewing and printed form (PDF?). In HTML form it would allow superior interaction and appearance (see below), while the print form would look good on paper (layout etc). I have the idea that the tutorial could be multi-language. Different students have different requirements in their schools. For example, some schools teach Java, some teach C#. You could choose the language on the top of the HTML page and the relevant code snippets (and occasionally pieces of text) would swap out. Most of the text is the same anyway, only the language syntax is a bit different. The text would occasionally contain images too of course and these would need to be included in both the HTML and the printed version In the HTML version the code snippets should get automatic syntax coloring which should ideally be the same as in the recommended IDE for the tutorial. In case there are ambiguities, hints for the syntax colorer should be possible, but I don't want to do the whole coloring by hand. "Output" syntax coloring which would emulate a standard 80x25 text console (since many of the initial programs would be console applicatioins) Collapsible sections for answers to questions (aka "spoiler tags") Automatically generated index/table-of-contents Links to other parts of the tutorial (rendered as links in HTML and as references in print version) "Side note" sections, rendered as separate blocks on the side. Other functions useful in publications that I'm not aware of :) I know this is a bit much to ask, but is there something close enough that I could take it as a starting point and add the necessary features myself? Or is there something in the whole list (like the desire to have both HTML and print versions from the same source) that makes it all fundametally infeasible?

  I read this article Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery and I noticed these points in the slide page 11 some companies strip JavaScript at the firewall some run the NoScript Firefox extension to protect themselves from common XSS and CSRF attacks many mobile devices ignore JavaScript entirely screen readers do execute JavaScript but accessibility issues mean you may not want them to I did not understand the fourth point. What does it mean? I need your comment and responses on these points. Is not using JavaScript and switching to libraries like jQuery worth it?

With the exception of zero and one, never hard-code a numeric value; always declare a constant instead. Use the const directive only on natural constants such as the number of days of the week. 1st what is the definition of a natural constants and if the number is not a natural constants given the 1st rule how does one declare a constant in c# without the const directive? • Signing redistributed files

  In order to submit a desktop application for the Windows 8 app store, you need to digitally sign any driver or .exe associated with the application. However, the application I was trying to submit contains several files that are redistributions of other companies' software, and some of these are not signed. My application was rejected on these grounds. Is it legal (or ethical) to sign other companies' work so that we can submit our application? I think it might be considered some form of false representation but I'm not sure.

• How can a code editor effectively hint at code nesting level - without using indentation?

  I'm writing an XML text editor that provides 2 view options for the same XML text, one indented (virtually), the other left-justified. The motivation for the left-justified view is to help users 'see' the whitespace characters they're using for indentation of plain-text or XPath code without interference from indentation that is an automated side-effect of the XML context. I want to provide visual clues (in the non-editable part of the editor) for the left-justified mode that will help the user, but without getting too elaborate. I tried just using connecting lines, but that seemed too busy. The best I've come up with so far is shown in a mocked up screenshot of the editor below, but I'm seeking better/simpler alternatives (that don't require too much code). • Android SDK PATH Error: doesn´t find home directory [migrated]

  I use Ubuntu 12.10 and I tried to follow this guide Install android sdk and eclipse in Ubuntu 12.04 but I keep getting this error: Error: The AVD manager normally uses the user's profile directory to store AVD files. However it failed to find the default profile directory. To fix this, please set the environment variable ANDROID_SDK_HOME to a valid path such as ¨~¨. Any ideas how can I fix this?
