• Compressing large text data before storing into db?

  Hello, I have application which retrieves many large log files from a system LAN. Currently I put all log files on Postgresql, the table has a column type TEXT and I don't plan any search on this text column because I use another external process which nightly retrieves all files and scans for sensitive pattern. So the column value could be also a BLOB or a CLOB, but now my question is the following, the database has already its compression system, but could I improve this compression manually like with common compressor utilities? And above all WHAT IF I manually pre-compress the large file and then I put as binary into the data table, is it unuseful as database system provides its internal compression?

• GWT AbstractColumnDefinition (Need to add style to certain Columns)

  I have a column Definition for each colume that extends AbstractColumnDefinition these columns are put in a DefaultTableDefinition. example: NAME | SIZE | RES | DELETE | this style (AT THE END OF THE PAGE ) is added to the column names if you notice all of them are with a cursor pointer , meaning a hand shows up when i hover above each one. my question is would I be able to remove the coursor for delete or in general for a certain column and keeping it for another one .. i tried to do that with each column Definition but there is no such thing as remove or addstyle even to like put my own style. • Placement of axis labels at minor breaks with ggplot2

  I am using ggplot2 to do some plotting of genomic data, so the basic format is that there is a chromosome and a position along it. I convert the positions to be on a continuous scale, then put the breaks at the boundaries of the chromosomes with: scale_x_continuous("Genome Position", breaks = c(0, cumsum(chromosome_length))) That looks great, as far as the actual plotting is concerned, but the labels are then put at the start and end of the chromosomes. I would like them to be centered along each chromosome, at the position where the minor break is drawn by default. Is this possible?

  Refering to this question I asked a while ago: UI functionality modeling languages It looks like there is no good-enough solution. I decided to develop one. (and prepare a set of elements for DIA or something) I'm sure it will require a good insight in peoples' experiences and problems in designing functionally complicated GUIs. I've got some ideas already, but I'd like to hear from You what You'd expect from a GUI functionality modelling language. Clarification: It's functionality modelling, so it's not about where I put a button. It's about objects that have some events binded, and the interface behaviour logic. If You think (just as I do) that UML is far from useful for such purposes - feel free to put Your expectations here. I'll try to meet them. • xcode loading the images in background process, it leads to crash the application when i scroll the

  Hi, I have developed an application which has retrieved the information from remote location...so i put those in UITableView's Section.In response, i will be getting images also..for this i put the background process(only for images..because the app will take more time to retrieve images than text based information..).It is working fine...But if i scroll the tableview while loading the images..it is going to be crashed.... crash Log: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... could anyone has the solution for this..please let me know..how to resolve this crash...Even i used NSThread class for this.. but i didn't get the solution... Thanks, Srinivas G

• The width of a list that contains an embedded matrix grows unexpectedly

  I have a report in reporting services 2005 that includes a list with an embedded matrix and am attempting to put a border on the list, however, when I run the report in visual studio the matrix is growing past the end of the page and therefore the boarder is growing with it causing it to grow into the second page. It appears that there was supposedly a fix for this in reporting services 2000 service pack 1 but I am still experianceing the issue in 2005. The list has a details group that limits the records on a row to 4 using the following expression: =ceiling(rownumber("list1")/4), the matrix has a column group that should recycle those based on the rownumber determined by the list using the following expression: =rowNumber("list1_Details_Group") I have also attempted to put the list in a rectangle in hopes to stop the matrix from growing to no avail. How do I effectivly stop the matrix form growing past the space allowed by the list control?

  Hi, i'm new to iphone development. I spend several days by looking for how write muliview app for an Iphone OS. I found how to switch the diferent views without navigation hierarchy (in this article). It's great, but i want more complicated function. For example, i have three diferent views (view 1 - 3) and i can switch between them with technique from link 1. It works fine. My question is: How can i put UITabBarController on view 2, that shows own subviews (tabView 1 - 3) and how put UINavigationController on view 3, that shows own subviews (navView 1 - 2)? The reslut should look like that, one main view (view 1) with two buttons (for example), which switch me to "window" with UiTabBarController or UINavigationController. I found only tutorials, where UITabBarController was a first controller class, that shows directly from AppDelegate (something like default Xcode predefined scenarios). Thanks for your helpfull answer, or i will be crazy soon:).

• Delegate methods of NSTextField using NSNotification

  I have an NSTokenField in a window. I am using it to store tags related to a Core Data object. Right now I have it set up such that I can add tags to the objects, but I cannot delete them. I need a delegate method on the NSTokenField that can let me know when the user has moved the focus out of the NSTokenField. Since NSTokenField is a subclass of NSTextField I figured that I could use its delegate methods. It has two that I think could be useful: - (void)textDidChange:(NSNotification *)aNotification - (void)textDidEndEditing:(NSNotification *)aNotification I set my controller class as the delegate of my NSTokenField and put both of these methods into my controller class. I put a basic NSLog into each of them and neither is triggered when I interact with the NSTokenField. I am guessing it has something to do with NSNotification. How do I activate these methods?

  I have written an application and added 2 contacts on emulator, but i am not able to update their names on android 2.1, code is working on android 1.6 platform with the following code. ContentValues contactValues = new ContentValues(); contactValues.put(Contacts.People.NAME, firstName+" "+lastName); getContentResolver().update(UpdateContactUri, contactValues, null, null); In android 1.6 i am getting Uri for those two contacts are "content:// contacts/people/1" and "content://contacts/people/2". but in 2.1 I am getting these values are "content://contacts/people/8" and "content://contacts/people/9" and while updating its giving "java.IllegalArgumentException, Empty values" exception. When i tried to put a static Uri like "content://contacts/people/1", code was debugged sucessfully but contact was not updated. How can i resolve it, why i am not getting uri like 1.6 platform ? • How to order the images in a mysql database?

  Hy! Here is my problem: i have a profile and this profile has for example 100 images. When someone visit this profile the first image will be the first result of my query that sorts by updated_at. But if the user would want to put the image with the (id = 8) to be the first, then (id = 22) then (id = 88) and so on? I need to put another field or is really necessary a new table to make a custom sort on images? and maybe someone explain this to me how to do? thanks, i appreciate your help ;)

• Using Jquery $getJSON How do I dynamically create data for the [data] parameter after Url param?

  I have no problems getting the Json to work and parse the json return. I was just wondering how I could build a dynamic "whatever data is" and stick it into [data] to pass my parameters from there and not manually append them to the url. From jquery website example: $.getJSON("test.js", { name: "John", time: "2pm" }, function(json){ alert("JSON Data: " + json.users[3].name); }); I thought I could build a string ( which doesn't make sense anyway ) and drop it inside the { }, but I obviously don't understand that part. name: isn't a string and you can't put a variable in that part, so how would I dynamically put items into whatever [data] is.

• Twitter + OAuth Problem -- Cancel Button

  Hi everyone, I'm implementing OAuth to post on Twitter... which works perfectly. My issue is for those who entered the Twitter login area by accident and want to press the "Cancel" button. Unfortunately, the "Cancel" button is dismissed but then immediately reappears. • How to manage multiple versions of the same record

  I am doing short-term contract work for a company that is trying to implement a check-in/check-out type of workflow for their database records. Here's how it should work... 1) A user creates a new entity within the application. There are about 20 related tables that will be populated in addition to the main entity table. 2) Once the entity is created the user will mark it as the master. 3) Another user can make changes to the master only by "checking out" the entity. Multiple users can checkout the entity at the same time. 4) Once the user has made all the necessary changes to the entity, they put it in a "needs approval" status. 5) After an authorized user reviews the entity, they can promote it to master which will put the original record in a tombstoned status. The way they are currently accomplishing the "check out" is by duplicating the entity records in all the tables. The primary keys include EntityID + EntityDate, so they duplicate the entity records in all related tables with the same EntityID and an updated EntityDate and give it a status of "checked out". When the record is put into the next state (needs approval), the duplication occurs again. Eventually it will be promoted to master at which time the final record is marked as master and the original master is marked as dead. This design seems hideous to me, but I understand why they've done it. When someone looks up an entity from within the application, they need to see all current versions of that entity. This was a very straightforward way for making that happen. But the fact that they are representing the same entity multiple times within the same table(s) doesn't sit well with me, nor does the fact that they are duplicating EVERY piece of data rather than only storing deltas. I would be interested in hearing your reaction to the design, whether positive or negative. I would also be grateful for any resoures you can point me to that might be useful for seeing how someone else has implemented such a mechanism. Thanks! Darvis

• How does Perl's lib pragma work?

  I use use lib "./DIR" to grab a library from a folder elsewhere. However, it doesn't seem to work on my server, but it works fine on my local desktop. Any particular reasons? And one more question, does use lib get propagated within several modules? Two situations: Say I make a base class that requires a few libraries, but I know that it needs to be extended and the extended class will need to use another library. Can I put the use lib command in the base class? or will I need to put it in every extending class? Finally, can I just have a use package where package contains a bunch of use lib, will it propagate the use lib statements over to my current module? <-- I don't think so, but asking anyways

• FOR XML PATH Query results to file with SSIS

  In SSMS I've gotten my for xml path query written and it's beautiful. I put it in an "Execute SQL Task" in the Control Flow, set the resultset to XML. Now how to I get the results into an actual xml file that I can turn around and FTP to a third party? This should have been so easy! I would put the XML into a variable but we are looking at a HUGE file, possibly 100mb+ Do I need to use a Script Task? (I'd like to avoid that if there is another option.)

• Creating a Cocoa Framework

  Hi, I've created a working Cocoa framework which I wish to redistribute. The problem is however, it won't run outside of Xcode. I've read something about @executable_path/../Frameworks, which I did not include, because I don't know where to put it :/ Therefore I run my app in Xcode using the DYLD_FRAMEWORK_PATH variable which works fine, but only in Xcode - if I try to run it on its own it crashes straight away and says IMAGE NOT FOUND. I'm sure @executable_path/../Frameworks is what's missing, but I don't know where to put it. Could anyone help me out please? :) Thanks

• Declaring pointers; asterisk on the left or right of the space between the type and name?

  I've seen mixed versions of this in a lot of code. (This applies to C and C++, by the way.) People seem to declare pointers in one of two ways, and I have no idea which one is correct, of if it even matters. The first way it to put the asterisk adjacent the type name, like so: someType* somePtr; The second way is to put the asterisk adjacent the name of the variable, like so: someType *somePtr; This has been driving me nuts for some time now. Is there any standard way of declaring pointers? Does it even matter how pointers are declared? I've used both declarations before, and I know that the compiler doesn't care which way it is. However, the fact that I've seen pointers declared in two different ways leads me to believe that there's a reason behind it. I'm curious if either method is more readable or logical in some way that I'm missing.

So now I am here and confused about how to put together a website. I get HTML and CSS but still have some problems designing the site now on the other had I am having trouble trying to figure out how php and database mysql is used to put together a website. I have seen videos from lynda.com and still have no Idea after I have watched the video the basic one, one that teach you the Variables, Loops, Strings ext... ok than what happens, how do you build the website with it, that is the question I am real not understand the answer to. • Problem in VS2010 IDE in analog monitor in a dual-monitor setup

  I am using VS2010 Premium with a dual-window setup. One of the monitors is on a digital (DVI) cable and other one is on an analog (VGA) cable. I have noticed that when I put VS2010 in the analog monitor, there are garbled texts and refresh problems while coding and/or scrolling. This does not seem to be the case when I put VS2010 in the digital monitor. Note that, I am not expanding VS IDE to use 2 screens, just making it 1 full screen, either analog or digital. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I also work with VS2008 and have not seen this problem in either screen. VS IDE has started using WPF from the 2010 release, not sure if this has something to do with it.

However a client needs to put the credentials into the url like so: https://username:[email protected]/my_secure_document When I looked at what was actually sent, it looks like the password is being hashed. What is the proper way to authenticate in this fashion using Restlet?

• search paths where one native library depends on another

  I'm using JNA and Java but I think this question affects any native-to-nonnative bridge. I have a Java application which relies on lib1.dylib, and lib1.dylib relies on lib2.dylib. I want to put everything inside of my .app file on Mac. I can easily put lib1.dylib inside and set java.classpath (or NativeLibrary.addSearchPath()) to tell the JVM where to find lib1.dylib. The trouble is, I don't know how to communicate that lib1.dylib's dependencies are also in the location I provided. The result is that lib1 is loaded fine, but then lib2 can't be found since it's not in the operating system's library path. Anyone know how I can overcome this problem? I imagine it must come up plenty in big projects with large numbers of shared libraries.

  Hi, I've more than one Handlers in an Activity. I create all the handlers in the onCreate() of the main activity. My understanding is the handlerMessage() method of each handler will never be called at the same time because all messages are put in the same queue (the Activity thread MessageQueue). Therefore, they will be executed in the order in which are put into the Queue. They will also be executed in the main activity thread.
