• WebClient.DownloadDataAsync is freezing my UI

  Hi, I have in my Form constructor, after the InitializeComponent the following code: using (WebClient client = new WebClient()) { client.DownloadDataCompleted += new DownloadDataCompletedEventHandler(client_DownloadDataCompleted); client.DownloadDataAsync("http://example.com/version.txt"); } When I start my form, the UI doesn't appears till client_DownloadDataCompleted is raised. The client_DownloadDataCompleted method is empty, so there's no problem there. What I'm doing wrong? How is supposed to do this without freezing the UI? Thanks for your time. Best regards. • C# Can anyone help convert this VB Webservice?

  I can't figure it out for the life of me.. I'm using SQL DataSet Query to iterate to a Class Object which acts as a Data Model for Flex... Initially I used VB.net but now need to convert to C#.. This conversion is done except for the last section where I create a DataRow arow and then try to add the DataSet Values to the Class (Results Class)... I get an error message.. • routing traffic between two network cards through firewall

  I'm trying to test a network device (firewall) using a Linux box, with two network cards, one interface connected to the WAN zone and another interface to LAN zone. The configuration is similar with that |ETH0| <-> | FW | <-> ETH1 So from both interfaces I'm able to ping the respective firewall interface. But i'm not able to fire something like: ping -I eth0 ip.from.eth1 and to get any answer. Is that possible or should the linux network namespace solution or user level tcp stacks (VMs are out of question)

• Active DFS node did not restore after failure

  On Tuesday we had a Server 2008 R2 DFS-R node go offline unexpectedly. DFS did the right thing and started routing requests to a different node, which was in a remote site. This is by design, because even though it's slow, at least it's still working. We had the local DFS-R node back online within an hour, and it had synced all its changes 10 minutes after that. 3 of the 5 terminal servers reset themselves to the local DFS node, but the other two stayed pointing at the remote DFS node for three days, until someone finally piped up about how slow requests were. What reasons could there be why some, but not all, of the server reverted? Is the currently active DFS node for a namespace exposed anywhere in the OS (WMI, or even scripts) so that we can monitor the active nodes?

• How do I recover from an unchecked exception?

  Unchecked exceptions are alright if you want to handle every failure the same way, for example by logging it and skipping to the next request, displaying a message to the user and handling the next event, etc. If this is my use case, all I have to do is catch some general exception type at a high level in my system, and handle everything the same way. But I want to recover from specific problems, and I'm not sure the best way to approach it with unchecked exceptions. Here is a concrete example. Suppose I have a web application, built using Struts2 and Hibernate. If an exception bubbles up to my "action", I log it, and display a pretty apology to the user. But one of the functions of my web application is creating new user accounts, that require a unique user name. If a user picks a name that already exists, Hibernate throws an org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException (an unchecked exception) down in the guts of my system. I'd really like to recover from this particular problem by asking the user to choose another user name, rather than giving them the same "we logged your problem but for now you're hosed" message. Here are a few points to consider: There a lot of people creating accounts simultaneously. I don't want to lock the whole user table between a "SELECT" to see if the name exists and an "INSERT" if it doesn't. In the case of relational databases, there might be some tricks to work around this, but what I'm really interested in is the general case where pre-checking for an exception won't work because of a fundamental race condition. Same thing could apply to looking for a file on the file system, etc. Given my CTO's propensity for drive-by management induced by reading technology columns in "Inc.", I need a layer of indirection around the persistence mechanism so that I can throw out Hibernate and use Kodo, or whatever, without changing anything except the lowest layer of persistence code. As a matter of fact, there are several such layers of abstraction in my system. How can I prevent them from leaking in spite of unchecked exceptions? One of the declaimed weaknesses of checked exceptions is having to "handle" them in every call on the stack—either by declaring that a calling method throws them, or by catching them and handling them. Handling them often means wrapping them in another checked exception of a type appropriate to the level of abstraction. So, for example, in checked-exception land, a file-system–based implementation of my UserRegistry might catch IOException, while a database implementation would catch SQLException, but both would throw a UserNotFoundException that hides the underlying implementation. How do I take advantage of unchecked exceptions, sparing myself of the burden of this wrapping at each layer, without leaking implementation details?

• Batch renaming 32000 files - splitting into multiple subdirectories

  I've got a web server which has files uploaded to it. There is a script which assigns them numeric IDs and stores them in a corresponding subdirectory. I've now got 32000 of these uploads and that's too many for the server to handle in one directory. The script I'm using does have a way to "namespace" uploads so that ID 12345 - instead of sitting in /files/12345 - would sit in /files/namespaced/000/012/345. The code can deal with this just fine, but I now have 32000 subdirectories in the wrong naming style. What's the easiest way to go through my existing files and put them in the right place?

  I am trying to get a list of Products that share the Category. NHibernate returns no product which is wrong. • Jaxb unmarshalls fixml object but all fields are null

  I have a small XML document in the FIXML format. I'm unmarshalling them using jaxb. The problem The process complete without errors but the objects which are created are completely null. Every field is empty. The fields which are lists (like the Qty) have the right number of object in them. But the fields of those objects are also null. Setup I've downloaded the FIXML schema from here and I've created the classes with xjc and the maven plugin. They are all in the package org.fixprotocol.fixml_5_0_sp2. In the above sample the Amt array will have five element which matches the number of amts in the file. But all the fields like ccy are null. I've put breakpoints in the classes created by xjc and none of the setters are ever called. So it appears that jaxb is unmarshalling and creating all the correct objects, but it's never calling the setters?? I'm completely stumped on this. I've seen a few posts that suggrest making sure the package.info file that was generated by xjc is in the packags and I've made sure that it's there. There are no working in the IDE about the generated code. Any help much appreciated.

• Error using Session in IIS

  After deployment of my website to IIS I'm getting a following error message when trying to access session: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. I access it in Page_Load or PreRender events (I tried both versions). With VS Dev Server it works without a problem. I tried both InProc an SessionState storage, 1 and multiple woker processes. I added a enableSessionState = "true" to my webpage explicitly.   I am trying UpdatePanel & AsyncPostBackTrigger on master pages through find control method but problem is when I click on button (UpdateButton) It just flash/flick (No Postback) the UpdatePanle but still it don't update or refresh the gridview (images) inside the updatePanel. I have placed script Manger on the master page & an AJAX Update panel in a ContentPlaceHolder in the child page. Also, in another ContentPlaceholder there is an asp button (outside of the UpdatePanel). I want to refresh/reload the AJAX UpdatePanel with this asp button. Thanks for suggestions.   I am attempting to subtract two int arrays, stored as class members, using an overloaded - operator, but I'm getting some peculiar output when I run tests. • Windows DFS Limitations

  So far I have seen an article on performance and scalability mainly focusing on how long it takes to add new links. But is there any information about limitations regarding number of files, number of folders, total size, etc? Right now I have a single file server with millions of JPGs (approx 45 TB worth) that are shared on the network through several standard file shares. I plan to create a DFS namespace and replicate all these images to another server for high availability purposes. Will I encounter extra problems with DFS that I'm otherwise not experiencing with plain-jane file shares? Is there a more recommended way to replicate these millions of files and make them available on the network? EDIT: I would experiment on my own and write a blog post about it, but I don't have the hardware for the second server yet. I'd like to collect information before buying 45 TB of hard drive space...

I would like to edit the code so that instead of using the currently selected folder as the source for the messages, there would be a hard-coded folder - something like Set Messages = NS.Folders("Personal Folders").Folders("Moved"). I'm a VBA rookie and tried just replacing the Set Messages line with this which resulted in a Run-time error '13': Type mismatch which I think refers to a mismatch of the Dim Messages and the Set Messages commands. I've tried using different Dim definitions with no luck. I'm guessing that someone who knows VBA will see the way to do this right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  I am new to both Chef and Ruby and I am implementing some scripts to learn them. Now I am facing the problem of how to organize my code: I have created a class in the library directory and I have used a custom namespace to maintain order. Can anyone help me, please? I am looking for a solution of this problem (organize my code, libraries, use resources in classes) or, better, a good Chef documentation as I find the documentation very deficient in clarity and disorganized so that research through it is a pain.

• Difficulty creating classes and arrays of those classes C#

  I'm trying to implement a Discrete Fourier Transformation algorithm for a project I'm doing in school. But creating a class is seeming to be difficult(which it shouldn't be). I'm using Visual Studio 2012. Basically I need a class called Complex to store the two values I get from a DFT; The real portion and the imaginary portion. It recognizes my constructor as a method. Why is that? Am I creating the class wrong? It's doing the same thing for my Fourier class as well. So each time I try to create a Fourier object and then use it's method...there is no such thing. example, I do this: Fourier fou = new Fourier(); fou.DFT(s, N, amp, 0); and it tells me fou is a 'field' but is used like a 'type' why is it saying that? • Should I be using the command pattern? Seems like a lot of work...

  My Room class has a lot of methods I used before I decided to use the command pattern. Previously, I was invoking a lot of commands and now it seems I have to make a method in my roomParser class for every method. If I wanted to invoke say, setHotelCode I would have to create a method in roomParser that iterates through and invokes the method. • WCF/REST Get image into picturebox?

  So I have wcf rest service which succesfuly runs from a console app, if I navigate to: http://localhost:8000/Service/picture/300/400 my image is displayed note the 300/400 sets the width and height of the image within the body of the html page.
