• smartctl -t long isn't finishing

  I been running smartctl -t long on a drive for about 2 days now and it seems to be stalled at 10%. short and conveyance both passed. I have to send 1 of 2 drives purchased back I found badblocks with badblocks (none on this drive and I'ts made over a pass already). • mod_rewrite REQUEST_FILENAME doesn't contain absolute path

  I have a problem with a file test operation in a mod_rewrite RewriteCond entry which is testing whether %{REQUEST_FILENAME} exists. It seems that rather than %{REQUEST_FILENAME} being an absolute path, I'm getting a path which is rooted at the DocumentRoot instead. Configuration I have this inside a <VirtualHost> block in my apache 2.2.9 configuration: RewriteEngine on RewriteLog /tmp/rewrite.log RewriteLogLevel 5 #push virtually everything through our dispatcher script RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^/([^/]*)/?([^/]*) /dispatch.php?_c=$1&_m=$2 [qsa,L] Diagnostics attempted That rule is a common enough idiom for routing requests for non-existent files or directories through a script. Trouble is, it's firing even if a file does exist. If I remove the rule, I can request normal files just fine.   I recently hired a programming team to do a port of my iPad app to the iPhone and Android platforms. I also wanted them to implement a bunch of tips on how to play the app, similar like you would find in Candy Crush or Cut the Rope. They want to charge 12 hours @ $35/hr for the "Testing all of the Tips", telling me that normally it would take them more than 25 hours but that they will 'bear the difference'. I have never heard of this, but maybe it's a new practice? I am used to devs doing their own quality control, and then having a testing/acceptance period... Am I missing something?   I want to make a class testable using dependency injection. But the class creates multiple objects at runtime, and passes different values to their constructor. This would work, but it seems like I'll end up creating tons of little factories and factory interfaces, for every dependency of this sort. Is there a better way?

If I have to give read permissions to some files it will be fine. But there are files I have to protect (like file with DB configuration or business logic of application).

The unit tests usually end up looking quite ugly, they're full of "code smell," but does this really matter? I always tell myself as long as the "real" code is "good" that's all that matters. Plus, unit testing usually requires various "smelly hacks" like stubbing functions. How concerned should I be over poorly designed ("smelly") unit tests?

  Currently going through a process of testing two AdWords ppc providers at the same time from two separate AdWords accounts. However they will require access to my GA account for linking and ecommerce tracking. Which means that they will be able to see each others results. I dont want this; Is it possible to set up GA so that; Company A only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA Company B only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA And each company never sees the other company's Adwords results? 100 positive karma points to anyone who can shed some light on this. I had to mimic this functionality on my local machine by SSL offloading Apache with a proxy, but it still isn't a 1-to-1 comparison. Similar issues can arise when dealing with stateful applications and sticky sessions. • How can I test if a point lies between two parallel lines?

  In the game I'm designing there is a blast that shoots out from an origin point towards the direction of the mouse. The width of this blast is always going to be the same. Along the bottom of the screen (what's currently) squares move about which should be effected by the blast that the player controls. Currently I am trying to work out a way to discover if the corners of these squares are within the blast's two bounding lines. I thought the best way to do this would be to rotate the corners of the square around an origin point as if the blast were completely horizontal and see if the Y values of the corners were less than or equal to the width of the blast which would mean that they lie within the effected region, but I can't work out

• New to CG shader programming, what program should I use to write and test them?

  I have started witting some shaders. First ones were fairly easy to write in notepad but now I need something with a bit more meat. I have checked rendermonnkey that seems to support CG but it is really old and don't know if it is a good option. On the other hand there exist this FX Composer 2.0 but it seems somthing that could really distract me from learning shaders because it seems a pretty deep program. Are there any other possibilities? There's a really nice alternative to write shaders named ShaderToy but just supports GLSL. Any information will be really welcomed. Thanks in advance.

• What has the most efficient intersection test against an AABB tree - OBB, Cylinder or Capsule?

  I'm currently trying to find collisions in 3D between a tighter volume than an AABB and a tree of AABB volumes. I just need to know whether they are intersecting, no closest distance or collision response. An OBB, Cylinder or Capsule would all roughly fit these purposes but Cylinder and Capsule were the first thing I thought of, which I have found little information about detecting intersections online. Am I right in thinking that they would always be more complex to perform Separating Axis Tests on even though they might seem like simpler shapes? I figure by the time I get my head around SAT for curved shapes I could have done the thing with OBBs but I wanted to find out for sure.

• I've been told that Exceptions should only be used in exceptional cases. How do I know if my case is exceptional?

  My specific case here is that the user can pass in a string into the application, the application parses it and assigns it to structured objects. Sometimes the user may type in something invalid. For example, their input may describe a person but they may say their age is "apple". Correct behavior in that case is roll back the transaction and to tell the user an error occurred and they'll have to try again. There may be a requirement to report on every error we can find in the input, not just the first. In this case, I argued we should throw an exception. He disagreed, saying, "Exceptions should be exceptional: It's expected that the user may input invalid data, so this isn't an exceptional case" I didn't really know how to argue that point, because by definition of the word, he seems to be right. But, it's my understanding that this is why Exceptions were invented in the first place. It used to be you had to inspect the result to see if an error occurred. If you failed to check, bad things could happen without you noticing. Without exceptions every level of the stack needs to check the result of the methods they call and if a programmer forgets to check in one of these levels, the code could accidentally proceed and save invalid data (for example). Seems more error prone that way. Anyway, feel free to correct anything I've said here. My main question is if someone says Exceptions should be exceptional, how do I know if my case is exceptional?

  I am using Apache's mod_rewrite to redirect mobile users to my mobile site based on their http_user_agent. However not all pages have a mobile equivalent. Also mobile pages end in .html and "full" pages end in .shtml. Here is some pseudo code. Does the user have a certain HTTP_USER_AGENT? Is there a mobile page? If so take them there. If not, no redirection is needed. I want to do this with apache.

  What do you do when you are writing a test and you get to the point where you need to make the test pass and you realize that you need an additional piece of functionality that should be separated into its own function? That new function needs to be tested as well, but the TDD cycle says to Make a test fail, make it pass then refactor. If I am on the step where I am trying to make my test pass I'm not supposed to go off and start another failing test to test the new functionality that I need to implement. For example, I am writing a point class that has a function WillCollideWith(LineSegment): public class Point { // Point data and constructor ... public bool CollidesWithLine(LineSegment lineSegment) { Vector PointEndOfMovement = new Vector(Position.X + Velocity.X, Position.Y + Velocity.Y); LineSegment pointPath = new LineSegment(Position, PointEndOfMovement); if (lineSegment.Intersects(pointPath)) return true; return false; } } I was writing a test for CollidesWithLine when I realized that I would need a LineSegment.Intersects(LineSegment) function. But, should I just stop what I am doing on my test cycle to go create this new functionality? That seems to break the "Red, Green, Refactor" principle. Should I just write the code that detects that lineSegments Intersect inside of the CollidesWithLine function and refactor it after it is working? That would work in this case since I can access the data from LineSegment, but what about in cases where that kind of data is private?

  It seems to me that everyone uses NUnit without even considering the other options. I think this is because: Everyone is familiar with it already so they won't have to learn a new API. It is already set up with their continuous integration server to work with NUnit. Am I wrong about this? I decided to use xUnit on one of my own projects recently and I love it! It makes so much more sense to me and conceptually it seems like a definite step forward from NUnit. I'd like to hear opinions on which framework is actually the best - not taking into consideration having to learn it or reconfigure your automated testing.

• Need to test .properties one by one in every possibility?

  For example, there are some key-value configuration in .properties file. Such like someFeatureEnable=true. It must be bool type value which will be parsed by framework, in my case it's typical Java Spring configuration. Spring will handle the configuration and throw Exception when users set someFeatureEnable=123. My question is: if there many properties in .properties file, Is it worth testing them one by one? It's quite troublesome and low priority. The .properties file is always configured by tech administrator stuff. Limited chances that they will mess up the configuration. Thanks!

• Google is still crawling and indexing my old, dummy, test pages which now are 404 not found

  I have set up my site with sample pages and data (lorem ipsum, etc..) and Google has crawled these pages. I deleted all these pages and actually added real content but in webmaster tools, i still get a lot of 404 errors Google trying to crawl these pages. I have set them to "mark as resolved" but some pages still come back as 404. Furthermore, I have a lot of these sample pages still listed when i do a search of my site on Google. How to remove them. I think these irrelevant pages are hurting my rating. I actually wanted to erase all these pages and start getting my site being being indexed as a new one but I read it's not possible? (I have submitted a sitemap and used "Fetch as Google.")
