  • Nested Threads?

    - by Olaseni
What are the rules regarding spawning new threads within other running threads? I have a C# app that handles two basic threads in the background. I recently introduced some heavy duty IO stuff, and I was thinking of setting them off inside threads. Are threads nested within themselves cool?

  • Django: How to set default language in admin on login

    - by lazerscience
I'm saving an user's default language in his user profile and on login I want to set the admin's default language to it. One possibility I was thinking of is using a middleware, but I think if I do it on process_request I will not see an user object there since this is processed AFTER the middleware, so I could only set it after the next request! Any solutions are highly appreciated!

  • Where is the future of databases?

    - by Danny
I'm a bit frustrated with my MySQL database at the moment, so I've been thinking about all the things I'd like to see in the database of the future. But I thought it would be fun to hear other people's thoughts too--I'm not a pro by any means.

  • Database best practices

    - by user270797
I have a table which stores comments, the comment can either come from another user, or another profile which are separate entities in this app. My original thinking was that the table would have both user_id and profile_id fields, so if a user submits a comment, it gives the user_id leaves the profile_id blank is this right, wrong, is there a better way?

Hi there folks, I'm researching the prospect of incorporating a blog into my site. Currently, my site is written using the Zend Framework so it's not just a case of using Wordpress and that be the end of it. I was wondering. Has someone already done what I'm thinking of doing and written a blog infrastructure with comments and so forth using ZF? Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks Steve

    - by spickles
I love the BarCode Scanner application for the Android phone (we're using Motorola's Droid). Is it possible to access the BarCode Scanner from a web application running on the phone? I was thinking of using a WebView, but I'm not sure how I'd access the Scanner API. Regards, Scott

  • Referring to the public root in PHP - best practices

    - by Emanuil
I've been using the $_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"] environment variable to refer to the public root in my apps. Now I'm realizing that that's not very reliable. I'm thinking about an approach where I define a constant in my index.php based on a magic constant. Something like that: define("PUBILC", __DIR__); I'm not sure about it though. What approach would you recommend?

  • Getting Data From Webpages?

    - by fuzzygoat
When looking to get data from a web page whats the recommended method if the page does not provide a structured data feed? Am I right in thinking that its just a case of doing an NSURLRequest and then hacking what you need out of the responseData(NSData*)? I am not too concerned about the implementation in Xcode, I am more curious about actually collecting the data, before I start coding a "hunt & peck" through a list of data. gary

  • seeking j2ee books recommendation

    - by john
Hi, I'm thinking of a serious training in j2ee and found there are too many books to choose from. Could you kindly share your insights as a practicing professional in this respect? For example, some people in other post recommend "SCWCD Exam Study Kit Second Edition Java Web Component Developer Certification Hanumant Deshmukh, Jignesh Malavia, and Matthew Scarpino" by quickly looking at Amazon, I found Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0 (5th Edition) [Paperback] Richard Monson-Haefel received 141 reviews.... thanks

  • Wanted: a very simple java RegExp API

    - by itsadok
I'm tired of writing Pattern p = Pattern.compile(... Matcher m = p.matcher(str); if (m.find()) { ... Over and over again in my code. I was going to write a helper class to make it neater, but I then I wondered: is there a library that tries to provide a simpler facade for Regular Expressions in Java? I'm thinking something in the style of commons-lang and Guava.

  • Intercept call made using TAPI

    - by Adam Price
I have an application which currently has an option to call phone numbers. Now by default it opens the Windows Phone dialler utility and tries to call the number. I want it to instead make the call using skype, so what I was thinking was to create a c# application which would capture the callRequest and instead call skype.exe /callto: Has anyone done anything like this before?

  • common problem with Hibernate/NHibernate and child IDs

    - by tyndall
I'm asking both Hibernate and NHibernate groups because I'm thinking this may be a common issue seen on both. What does it usually mean when you call a saveOrUpdate on a child object and... 1) If it is an insert everything works fine. 2) If it is an update its wiping out the parent ID in the database.

  • Memory Mapped Files .NET

    - by CSharpAtl
I have a project and it needs to access a large amount of proprietary data in ASP.NET. This was done on the Linux/PHP by loading the data in shared memory. I was wondering if trying to use Memory Mapped Files would be the way to go, or if there is a better way with better .NET support. I was thinking of using the Data Cache but not sure of all the pitfalls of size of data being saved in the Cache.

  • Should you do validation checks that go outside the possiblility of normal user activity?

    - by Scarface
Hey guys I have been thinking about form security a lot lately. I have been told time and time again to check if form input is a number if you are expecting a number or escape it in case (unless you use proper mysqli formatting) to avoid injection. 1.After the safety checks are done, should I do additional logic checks? For example, if the user is sending a friend request to them-self for example even if my user interface will not show the form if the user is looking at their own page.
