  Hi, I've a recurrent problem, I don't find an elegant solution to avoid the resource cleaning code duplication: resource allocation: try { f() } catch (...) { resource cleaning code; throw; } resource cleaning code; return rc; So, I know I can do a temporary class with cleaning up destructor, but I don't really like it because it breaks the code flow and I need to give the class the reference to the all stack vars to cleanup, the same problem with a function, and I don't figure out how does not exists an elegant solution to this recurring problem.

Otherwise, P.O. # would have 0. P.O. Number used to have unique constraint, this forces employee to generate P.O. in all cases so the db doesn't throw unique constraint error. Since i removed the unique constraint, any quote doesn't have P.O. will carry 0 value. Otherwise, a unique value is generated for P.O. #. However, i don't have a unique constraint in db which makes it hard for me to know whether the application generated P.O. # is unique or not. What should i do? I hope my question is clear enough

• Thoughts on try-catch blocks

  What are your thoughts on code that looks like this: public void doSomething() { try { // actual code goes here } catch (Exception ex) { throw; } } The problem I see is the actual error is not handled, just throwing the exception in a different place. I find it more difficult to debug because i don't get a line number where the actual problem is. So my question is why would this be good? ---- EDIT ---- From the answers it looks like most people are saying it's pointless to do this with no custom or specific exceptions being caught. That's what i wanted comments on, when no specific exception is being caught. I can see the point of actually doing something with a caught exception, just not the way this code is.

• After Trigger execute before constraint check in oracle

  Hi, I have After Insert/Update trigger on Table T1 which get the referential data for Col1 from T2 and does some work and insert it into another table. The col1 is FK to Table T2. When user insert the incorrect or non existing value into the Col1 and if trigger is disabled I am getting constraint error that is fine. But when trigger is enabled and user insert the wrong value in Col1 trigger is getting fired and shows the 'no data found' error message. Actually I am expecting the table to throw constraint error, but trigger is throwing it. Please let me know your comments about this trigger behaviour.

• Java NullPointerException when traversing a non-null recordset

  Hello again - I am running a query on Sybase ASE that produces a ResultSet that I then traverse and write the contents out to a file. Sometimes, this will throw a NullPointerException, stating that the ResultSet is null. However, it will do this after printing out one or two records. Other times, with the same exact input, I will receive no errors. I have been unable to consistently produce this error. The error message is pointing to a line: output.print(rs.getString(1)); It appears to happen when the query takes a little longer to run, for some reason. The recordset returns thus far have been very small (4 to 7 records). Sometimes I'll have to run the app 3 or 4 times, then the errors will just stop, as though the query was getting "warmed up". I've run the query manually and there doesn't appear to be any performance problems. Thanks again!

  I know in the Manuel it says that the header has to be the first thing in a script, but how come I see some codes where header("Location: member.php?id=$username") is in a if-statement? Please try again!"; } But when I do this, it sometimes would/won't throw an error. How do I allow the header (); to be used in a script without any errors? I want to redirect the user back to the login if they click "no" and to the homepage if they click "yes".

• What's the purpose of having a separate "operator new[]" ?

  Looks like operator new and operator new[] have exactly the same signature: void* operator new( size_t size ); void* operator new[]( size_t size ); and do exactly the same: either return a pointer to a big enough block of raw (not initialized in any way) memory or throw an exception. Also operator new is called internally when I create an object with new and operator new[] - when I create an array of objects with new[]. Still the above two special functions are called by C++ internally in exactly the same manner and I don't se how the two calls can have different meanings. What's the purpose of having two different functions with exactly the same signatures and exactly the same behavior?

  Hello, I am runninig test's with Python Unittest. I am running tests but I want to do negative testing and I would like to test if a function throw's an exception, it passes but if no exception is thrown the test fail's. • Web app - Biometric system connection

  Hi, I will be developing an application for a club where they will have visitors use biometric systems(finger print) or magnetic cards to mark their attendance. This application is planned as a web app, made using PHP/MySQL/Javascript. It does a lot of other things as well. What I wanted to find out is how is the interface between Biometric/Megnetic Card systems to a web app done? I've never worked on this and am hoping if someone who has experience with this can throw some light on this as to how this could be accomplished. Any pointers will be appreciated. (I'm afraid there's got to be some form of application installed on a pc that would interface with the hardware and probably makes calls to the web app. But, if there was a way to connect it to the web app directly, then the app would be easy to deploy to any location with minimal installation.) • JSF and Ajax4JSF on WebSphere 6.1 --> Problem with Form Submission

  Has anyone setup JSF1.1 with Ajax4JSF on websphere 6.1 ? I followed the instructions as mentioned in the developer guide . The problem that I am facing is that once I use a4j:support on any of my h:inputText item, the form values are not getting set in the backing bean on the submission of the form. I do have <h:messages> tag present just above the form so that all the problems should be reported there but I do not see any error message once I submit the form. But I do see that the values are not getting set. I need to find the solution as early as possible otherwise I probably have to throw the ajax4jsf framework and write javascripts instead :(

• When does a MySQL Query actually execute in PHP?

  This sounds like a really simple question, but I am new to PHP. If I have a statement like this: $r =& $db->query("insert into table (col1, col2) values (10, 20)"); Do I have to still execute it, or does it get executed when I reference it? I have another case where I have a select query, which seems logically to run only when I call fetchrow, but the code I am presented with (to fix) does not call execute or fetch.I would have expected it to, so I cannot tell if it is just that I don't get it, or that the missing execute statement is the problem. It also does not insert the record, but it does not throw an error I can find. Also, I am a little confused by the =& notation. I looked it up on google, and found a few mentions of it, but I am still not clear on it. Thanks.

  We have a REST API where clients can supply parameters representing values defined on the server in Java Enums. So we can provide a descriptive error, we add this lookup method to each Enum. Seems like we're just copying code (bad).   Hi, Is there a pattern OR 'a best practice' on creating user's friendly messages in the presentation layer by using exceptions which were thrown from the Business Layer? Actually in many cases I prefer to throw Application Exceptions and this is forcing me to catch them on UI (aspx.cs pages). And if the process is complex which may produce many different types of exceptions I have to have many catch blocks to produce specific error messages. Is there a better way coming to your mind? A pattern maybe for similar cases? thanks

What is the proper way to authenticate in this fashion using Restlet?

  What's the best way to check if the view is visible on the window? I have a CustomView which is part of my SDK and anybody can add CustomView to their layouts. My CustomView is taking some actions when it is visible to the user periodically. So if view becomes invisible to the user then it needs to stop the timer and when it becomes visible again it should restart its course. But unfortunately there is no certain way of checking if my CustomView becomes visible or invisible to the user. There are few things that I can check and listen to: onVisibilityChange //it is for view's visibility change, and is introduced in new API 8 version so has backward compatibility issue onWindowVisibilityChange //but my CustomView can be part of a ViewFlipper's Views so it can pose issues onDetachedFromWindows //this not as useful onWindowFocusChanged //Again my CustomView can be part of ViewFlipper's views. So if anybody has faced this kind of issues please throw some light.

• SoundPool.load() and FileDescriptor from file

  I tried using the load function of the SoundPool that takes a FileDescriptor, because I wanted to be able to set the offset and length. The File is not stored in the Ressources but a file on the storage card. Even though neither the load nor the play function of the SoundPool throw any Exception or print anything to the console, the sound is not played. Using the same code, but use the file path string in the SoundPool constructor works perfectly. This is how I have tried the loading (start equals 0 and length is the length of the file in miliseconds): FileInputStream fileIS = new FileInputStream(new File(mFile)); mStreamID = mSoundPool.load(fileIS.getFD(), start, length, 0); mPlayingStreamID = mSoundPool.play(mStreamID, 1f, 1f, 1, 0, 1f); If I would use this, it works: mStreamID = mSoundPool.load(mFile, 0); mPlayingStreamID = mSoundPool.play(mStreamID, 1f, 1f, 1, 0, 1f); Any ideas anyone?   I have a message (say its called OuterMessage) message OuterMessage { optional int64 id = 1; optional InnerMessage inner = 2; } and an inner message message InnerMessage { optional string type = 1; optioanl int64 id = 2; } Now when I call parseFrom on OuterMessage like OuterMessage.parseFrom(buffer) the method never returns and nor does it throw any exception. But if I do InnerMessage.parseFrom(buffer) it returns an empty InnerMessage instance. I am serializing the message using protobuf-net. Any idea what might be causing the issue?

  Hello I have used some third party controls in my windows application. There is a snippet which is being used in our code which re-initializes all the .text property of all the controls on the form. Everything works fine except for a control. This control is similar to the Windows Panel except for it has a dropdown appearance. This control has .Caption property instead of .Text property associated to it. This causes the problem whenever i use such codes foreach (Control oControl in this.Controls) { if (oControl is DropDownPanel) { { oControl.Text = rm_ResourceManager.GetString(oControl.Name + ".Text"); } } } The text is not set here for the DropDownPanel control in the above method. Since .Text is not available for DropDownPanel control. I cannot do the following either .. ((DropDownPanel)oControl).Caption = rm_ResourceManager.GetString(oControl.Name + ".Text"); Cos it shall throw exception if i try to cast oControl with that of DropDownPanel Any ideas how can i overcome such a condition.   Hi folks, i have the following two regular expressions (in order btw). 1. ^~/buying/(.*)\?(.*) => foo= group 1 baa= group 2. 2. ^~/buying/(.*) => foo= group 1 baa= nothing/empty/null/baibai What's i'm trying to do is, if the url has a questionmark, then split it into two groups. Otherwise, just throw all the stuff into the first group. the reason why the order is important for me, is that if i switch them round, the '?' regex will never get fired because the #2 expression (above) will catch all.
