• How to install windows 7 from scratch on a disk which already contains partitions

  Hi, I have following partitions on a 1 TB disk. 14 GB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 Now because of the problems mentioned in my other question here I got a brand new windows 7 cd and want to install it from scratch after deleting all the extra partitions. But windows 7 installation doesn't give me such options. It refuses to touch the 14GB Recovery and 100 MB (reserved by previous windows 7) partition. Any ideas ? Note: Because of it is a dynamic disks most of the freely available tools refuse to delete the partitions on the disk. regards.

• New Seagate GoFlex external hard drive reporting temperature 50C and higher--defective or normal?

  I have a brand-new Seagate GoFlex hard drive, and my SMART diagnostics program (CrystalDiskInfo) is warnings me that the drive is running too hot. The lowest reported temperature I've seen it is 48C, and the highest so far is 56C (all of last week, it was at 50C). According to several sources I've found online, including a Google study, hard disks operating higher than 40C have shorter lifespans. The temperature in the room is usually about 23C (74F), and orienting the drive vertically vs. horizontally doesn't seem to affect the operating temperature. Does anyone else have a GoFlex external desktop drive that runs at 40C or cooler? Is my drive just defective, or is this high temperature common for these drives?

• Can a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable support resolutions above 1920x1200?

  Is it theoretically possible for a cheapo Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter to support resolutions above 1920 × 1200, e.g. 2560 × 1440 (QHD)? Or is it always electrically-equivalent to a single-link DVI, and such resolutions above 1920×1200 are out of the question? From empirical evidence, I've tried out some rather expensive brand-name adapter from a local Apple dealer that was marked as HDMI 1.3 compliant with my mid-2013 MacBook Air (5000) and also with X230 (4000), and a QHD monitor, but was only getting a maximum of FHD resulution through such an arrangement.

• Which app has a notification sound with 3 descending notes?

  Brand new Windows 7 box loaded with the usual dev tools -- VS2008, Firefox, Chatzilla, Thunderbird, emacs, Pidgin, Putty, iTunes, SharpReader. Every couple of minutes, I get an audio notification consisting of three rising notes, maybe a middle-C-G-F on a piano (I don't have a piano handy, and don't have time to use GarageBand to try to figure it out). Nothing in the notification bar is flashing when this happens. The sound isn't in any of the Windows Sound control panel applets. And it's not in C:\Windows\Media, so it's most likely coming from a non-Microsoft app. Any chance it's Pidgin when the status one of my contact's changes (which happens plenty frequently)? Oh, look at this --- Tools/Mute Sounds. Let's try that and see what happens... Is this familiar to anyone?

• Gigabyte Motherboard + Adaptec RAID = No Booting from any drives

  I have a brand new PC, just out of the box. It has a Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 motherboard. I also have an Adaptec ASR-2504 SAS RAID card with 2x 15k Seagate Barracuda SAS drives attached. After the motherboard init's its on-board RAID it then init's the Adaptec RAID. It detects all the RAID devices OK, but when it gets to Loading Operating System... (i.e. right before it should load the OS) it just sits there forever, doing nothing: If I force it to boot from the optical drive, you see it spin up for a few seconds then die down again. If I remove the Adaptec RAID card, everything works perfectly. As soon as it's plugged back in, it never gets past that stage. The RAID card should be perfectly fine (it was before), but I have raised a case with Adaptec anyway. Any suggestions on what I can try to get these two to play nicely together?

• What is the keyboard shortcut to clear formatting on Office 2008 Mac?

  I recently switched from a PC to a brand new Macbook Pro. I was happy to see that most of the keyboard shortcuts in Word 2008 where the same or almost the same than in Word 2007. However, there is one keyboard shortcut that I dearly miss : the clear formatting shortcut (ctrl + space on Windows). I know the feature exists since it's in the formatting bar, but I can't find the keyboard shorcut. I tried cmd + space but that is the system keyboard shortcut to switch the keyboard type. alt + space delete the text without deleting the formatting. ctrl + space doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone know what the keyboard shortcut for the clear formatting command may be? I hope there's one because it's really painful to reach for the mouse everytime I put a title and I want to switch to a normal paragraph style...

• Can't delete a directory on external drive (OS X)

  I have a brand new Transcend StoreJet 25M3 (external HDD) mounted to MacBook (Leopard 10.5.8) at /Volumes/Transcend. I copied some data from my old Windows (XP) machine on it, and now, after cleaning some stuff up, I wanted to delete some directories, but this is what happened: $ rmdir My\ Pictures/ rmdir: My Pictures/: Operation not permitted Using Finder just asks for password, but does not delete the directory (sound of "moved to Trash" is played). I thought it's some permission "thing", but: $ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 martin staff 32768 5 jan 16:11 My Pictures/ $ sudo rm -rf My\ Pictures rm: My Pictures: Operation not permitted I re-mounted, rebooted (thinking that there's some file lock), but that did not help. What might have happened here? How to delete it?

• Server 2003 - Default installation of SharePoint throws javascript error 'undefined' is null or not an object

  I have been handed a server that has a fresh installation of small business server 2003. SharePoint has been installed, and it is a completely fresh copy (no changes made) I know for a fact that everything was paid for so this isn't some dodgy copy. When I try to click any option in any of the floating menu's in IE 8, the browser asks me if I want to debug .. Error: 'undefined' is null or not an object for example, I got to Projects - and click on the sample project, then click delete on the floating menu that pops up and the error appears. This is brand new, I cannot believe I am having this problem! Has anyone come across this, is it an old problem with easy fix? All windows updates installed - see no updates for sharepoint?   Hi everyone, After more than 12 years working with computers, I am still way behind when it comes to networking, so please bear with me :) As of this Christmas, the number of computers in my home has increased and it's well about time to upgrade the current network hardware in order to offer LAN connection to all computers. Trying to find a cheap solution, A close friend offered me a great deal on a "enterprise-class" Switch from HP (more LAN ports than I would ever need), at the same price as what a brand new Netgear or D-link Switch with 6/8 ports would cost me in retail. Would it be common sense to get this one and start using it immediately and never again have to worry about running out of LAN connections, or am I taking on a bigger bite than what I could chew?

• LCD problems: brightness / contrast blown out, can't bring up menu

  Yesterday, when I turned on my LCD monitor, the colors were very very bright. It looks as if someone had gone into the monitor on-screen-display and turned up brightness & contrast all the way to the max. Colors were washed out, and it's almost painful to look at. So I tried to go into the menu and see if the settings were wrong somehow...and I found that I cannot bring up the menu. All the buttons on the front of the monitor now do nothing, except the power button. I was able to go into my graphics card settings, and turn the brightness way down to compensate, so it's at least usable for now, but it's not quite right, there is definitely some loss of color resolution or something from the two extreme settings canceling each other out. Any ideas what kind of failure in the LCD might cause this? According to the control panel, the model number is: KL2490DW-D It's a 24" 1920x1200 with the brand "synaps".

• IMAP/POP won't send allow emails to outside- New Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011

  I have a brand new out of the box Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011. Our employees at our remote offices can't send emails to recipients outside of our own domain. The workstations at the same location as the server aren't having any problem. I would at this time like to say "Thanks a lot" to the super-minds at Microsoft for protecting our email server from rogue computers attempting to send fake emails. (Silly me I thought proper login and password conventions would handle that.) I know this is something dealing with relaying but thus far nothing from any posts I've read have changed anything. Honestly, if someone is crafty enough to guess one of our login/password combos, let them send emails through our server I don't care!

• Why maximum 1.0 Gbit Ethernet connection an old notebook, and only 100 Mbit on newer faster computer

  Strange problem about Ethernet speed: recently we bought an i7 core computer running Win7 64 bit with an onboard Gigabit Ethernet controller (Realtek PCIe Gbit Ethernet Family controller). Connecting this new fast pc directly to our brand new ASUS Gigabit Ethernet router via CAT6 cable(!) shows up the adapter status (see picture attached) only 100mbit, while the router is capable of 1000 mbit. More facts: Connecting an 8 year old IBM notebook with gigabit ethernet to the same cable end shows 1.0 Gbit connection in its adapter status. Speedtest.net shows 35 mbit/s down on the new computer Speedtest.net shows 78 mbit/s down on the old rusty IBM notebook. We have an 120 mbit down internet connection, which we we truly receive on another pc (also directly connected to the router) How to get the 1.0 Gbit going in the new pc ?

• new SBS 2011 Standard problems

  Brand new SBS 2011 install. I went to remove the DHCP server role. It went into a "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." Been there for hours. Finally, decided to power off and restart. After boot up, the same window and message appear and it just sits there spinning. "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." I'd love to get this installed before the end of the day but it doesn't look like that's possible. Any ideas on how to get passed this?

• Good scanner to buy as of January 2010

  I'm planning to buy a scanner soon and since I didn't purchased one in years I wanted to know which brand / models are the "best". The ability to scan negatives is a nice to have but not 100% required. If you are specifing a model in particular, plase note that it must work under 64-bit OS (I'm using Windows 7 Ulitmate 64-bit). I'm not looking for a all-in-one solution like scanner/fax/printer. I want to use this to scan "old" photos from the non-digital era :) And sometimes to scan magazines and books. I am located in Canada it would be nice if your suggestion is available here. I usually buy online at NCIX and DirectCanada if it can help you see what's available there. Edit: My search leaded me to 2 particular models. I hesitate between Canon CanoScan 8800F and Epson V600. Anyone have good/bad words on either of them?

• nVidia Control Panel Won't Recognize SLI

  So yesterday I bought a brand new, 1,000W PSU to replace my 650W one and to allow for SLI. I install it and my second card (both are GTX 560 ti cards). I reinstalled my drivers and my system recognizes both cards. The control panel says "GTX 560 ti x2", I can select between them for Physx, sound output, picture output (although I only have one hooked up to my monitor), etc. But the kicker is I can't turn on SLI. Everything I've read says I'll get a balloon notification saying I can use SLI and the control panel will have a new section, etc, but none of those things happens. Anyone have any ideas? System: Win7 Professional x64 2x GTX 560 ti 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 1,000W Xion PSU 8GB RAM (Can't think of my motherboard right now) Note: My PSU and MOBO both say they're SLI certified and I'm using an SLI bridge. • My php homepage downloads index.php instead of being processed on Gandi.net

  if I go to the homepage of my website http://www.website.com (on a brand new server) the index.php gets donwloaded instead than processed. I don't have the same problem on other folders. my .htaccess reads: AddHandler php5-script .php what could this be? I suspect it's something with php config / or htaccess, but I'm not able to figure it out. help please! edit: I don't know if this helps: it's a wordpress installation, I have this problem only on the public part of the website, not on the admin (that renders correctly)

• Performance: Nginx SSL slowness or just SSL slowness in general?

  I have an Amazon Web Services setup with an Apache instance behind Nginx with Nginx handling SSL and serving everything but the .php pages. In my ApacheBench tests I'm seeing this for my most expensive API call (which cache via Memcached): 100 concurrent calls to API call (http): 115ms (median) 260ms (max) 100 concurrent calls to API call (https): 6.1s (median) 11.9s (max) I've done a bit of research, disabled the most expensive SSL ciphers and enabled SSL caching (I know it doesn't help in this particular test.) Can you tell me why my SSL is taking so long? I've set up a massive EC2 server with 8CPUs and even applying consistent load to it only brings it up to 50% total CPU. I have 8 Nginx workers set and a bunch of Apache. Currently this whole setup is on one EC2 box but I plan to split it up and load balance it. There have been a few questions on this topic but none of those answers (disable expensive ciphers, cache ssl, seem to do anything.) • Sudden restart when Ubuntu almost loaded from disc.

  Hi all, Here are the specs beforehand: ECS K7SEM motherboard AMD Duron 900MHz 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM The Best Power MT-500P 500W PSU Integrated graphics No hard drive DVD-ROM - will update with brand & model Now, I was starting up this machine after it was left outside for 3 months in winter weather. (I got this from a friend.) I was able to get it started and tried to load Ubuntu from the DVD-ROM. It was fairly successful and got up to the point when the Ubuntu logo is glowing. However, when Ubuntu was about to go to the main screen, the computer crashed and automatically rebooted. Is there any reason why this is happening? Also, I should mention that when I try to hit Delete on the BIOS screen to go to Setup, it only shows a screen with four lines saying something Novell something... I will edit with exact lines. Should I be resetting the BIOS or something? Thanks in advance.

• Computer not displaying anything

  The computer in question worked last week. It's brand new, never been connected to the internet, up-to-date parts, etc. Last week, I installed some 3D software on it, then shut it down and waited for the license files that arrived this week. I've done this to 4 other PCs with the same hardware and software. I've tried: Hooking it up to 3 different monitors using different video cables 2 other graphics cards and a handful of other things like switching which port it's plugged into before and after a restart. I have the driver disc, and a windows reinstallation disc, but they won't do me any good because no display at all for any interval of time. All the fans are moving: psu, gfx, cpu etc, so I don't believe it's a power issue. Here are the specs I know of: 4GB RAM 8800 GTX 700w PSU Intel dual core (not sure of model) Anyways, I'm open to ideas.

• Memory upgrade - is the site reliable?

  Hi, I have a late-2008 unibody macbook model with 2 GB of ram. I am looking to upgrade to 4 GB of ram. I looked about a month ago at Other World Computing's 4 GB upgrade kit and I remember it being around $80. I looked today, finally getting to buy it and it went up to almost $100. I found another site, memoryupgrade.pro that calls itself "Pro memory upgrade" and it looks legitimate - it sells the memory for around $80 in its own brand. The only thing is, I haven't been able to find any reviews about it, and I'm not sure if it actually is reliable. Does anybody have any experience with this site? Does anybody have any other suggestions for buying macbook memory? I have friends who bought from OWC and were happy, should I just spend the extra $30 (including shipping) and buy from them? • Raspberry Pi stuck at splash screen

  I have a raspberry pi and I am stuck at the splash screen. In the top right of the screen there is an image of a Raspberry. When I first power on the device, I get the colored screen, and then I get the image of the raspberry followed by a white cursor which quickly freezes or disappears. I put on the debian version of wheezy that allows java. (the soft float version) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. BTW I did have it working at one point in time and all I did was go to the terminal (logged out of the GUI) and did a shutdown -h now command. But since then I've even started with a brand new version of the image and it is still not working. Oh and I did try the same SD card with a version of arch linux and it worked fine.

• Using the same VPC image on multiple workstations

  I haven't used an VMs before so brand new to the party. I'm running Win7 off an honest to goodness MSDN license so OS licensing is not an issue. I'd like to think that I could create a VPC image on a USB/eSATA hard drive and move that drive from one Win7-based workstation/laptop to another and I'd have the same services/desktop/computing environment at all of them. I'm a developer working against the IIS7/SQL08 stack with VS10 so i'm working with apps and services as deeply embedded with the OS as you can get. Should I expect to be able to pull this off? thx

• Installation is forbidden by system policy

  Note: I'm posting this here on Superuser as I think the issue is more related to the Windows Installer than the game itself. My friend is having trouble installing Company of Heroes and CoH: Opposing fronts under Windows 7. A couple of percent into the installation, when the C/C++ runtime is being installed, the install fails with the following message: An error occured while installing the Windows Installer package "C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp\...\...\vcredist.msi". Error code 10212:00000659: MsiInstallProductW returned 00000659: This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator. We have tried: Making sure that any previous installations have been completely removed, including searching and deleting any files/folders/registry entries matching "THQ" (the publisher) and "Relic" (the developer). Installing into a brand new user account Running Setup.exe as administrator Running Compatibility check for Setup.exe, which suggested Windows XP but failed when trying those settings out Does anyone know what might be the cause of the system policy error?

• Issues with non-HP harddisk in HP ML 350 server?

  I'm looking to buy some extra disk space for a HP ML 350 G5 server. It is for simple file-serving - not OS/system stuff. HP harddisks are insanely expensive, so I'm tempted to buy some other brand instead. I have heard that they sometime use special firmware on their disks, but I suspect that might just be HP spreading rumors to sell disks. Does anyone have experience using non-HP disks? Any features not working, or not being able to build the RAID at all? I'm looking at 2.5" SAS Seagate drives - Constellation 500 GB (7.2k) or Savvio 600 GB (10k).
