• Blank desktop when logging into a Virtualized Windows 2008 Terminal Server?

  We have a Virtualized Terminal Server running Windows Server 2008. When the admin user logs in, everything is fine. When anyone else logs in, their desktop and start menu is blank (they have the taskbar, start button, and quick launch links though). If I go into Windows Explorer, I can see icons in their desktop folder (although the icon image is missing and it is just displaying the generic icon), but can't run any of them. If I login with a user that is part of the Administrator group in Active directory, I get the same behavior except I can launch the programs found in the Desktop Folder of Windows Explorer. I cannot drag these items out onto the desktop though - The cursor doesn't allow me to drop them. From Task Manager I can see that explorer.exe and dwm.exe are both running. The Authenticated Users and Interactive groups are both under the Users group, along with our network's Domain Users group. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Also, not sure if it's related but about 1 in every 3 logins just hangs at a completely blank blue screen (no start button, taskbar, or quick launch buttons) and needs to be disconnected / reset by an admin. Edit I just noticed that the desktop itself doesn't even respond to click events. It's almost like the entire desktop is missing. At first I thought it didn't respond to right-click events because of an AD policy, but then I noticed if you open the Start Menu and click the desktop, the start menu doesn't shut like it should

I have the feeling it's caused by my video card but everything has the most up-to-date drivers for Windows 7 64 bit. • Dual boot nt4 and windows 98

  I am trying to dual boot nt4 and windows 98 se (don't laugh - old computer). I have seen Microsoft's instructions for doing this, but it limits windows 98 to have a Fat16 partition (NT4's NTLDR doesn't understand FAT32) and therefore only 2GB of disk space. I really need it to have more than that. I started with Win 98 (on the 1st partition), repartitioned the disk, then added NT4 on the 2nd partition. NT4 took over the bootloader (as expected), so NT4 boots, but Win 98 doesn't. Right now I am working in VMWare so I can use nonpersistent hard drives (IDE like the real computer) to recover from errors easily. I've tried using XPs NTLDR using the instructions here: http://www.nu2.nu/fixnt4/ , but I got weird errors from NT4 and it never really worked. If XP's NTLDR would work, that should be able to boot both OSes. I've also tried using GRUB. In theory that should work. In fact when booting from super grub disk, it does. But as soon as I install grub to disk, Win 98 boots, but NT 4 blue screens at boot with a 0x0000007b inaccessible_boot_device error (that can be alot of things see MS kb 822051). The incantation I'm using for GRUB 1 is rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 boot So, anybody have some suggestions?

• IE9 will not navigate to some websites but Google Chrome can

  Was recommended by a friend to ask for help here. I am using Internet Explorer 9. As of two days ago I was suddenly unable to navigate to any part of the following websites: www.computerandvideogames.com www.deviantart.com www.cnet.com However I can still access all of them normally through Google Chrome. I am on a college network but these sites are also accessible through fixed terminals provided by the school and are definitely not blocked. I do not know of any other sites similarly affected. There is no popup, no error message, no diversion to a site telling me I can't access / am blocked etc. I can be on www.google.com and attempt to access these sites through the URL or google search, and my cursor will just show the little moving blue wheel next to the arrow for a couple of seconds, and the page displayed on my browser will not change; ie. not navigating at all. Running antivirus software, changing proxy settings in IE, clearing cookies, unplugging/plugging in computer, restarting PC etc have not changed the situation. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Fast Ethernet module for Cisco 2620

  I have a Cisco 2620 Router. It comes with one fast ethernet port built in (circled in red), and one old AUI ethernet module is installed (circled in blue). I figure I can put a transceiver on the AUI interface to get a second RJ45 connector. What I'd really like to have is a second fast ethernet connector. The ideal candidate to achieve this would be the NM-1FE-TX module. Cisco claims on their website that this module is not suitable for the Cisco 2620 and Cisco 2620XM. It says so in "Table 2 Physical Limitation of Serial Modules per Chassis". Indeed, this module was designed for the 3600 series of routers. I've seen claims on the internet, however, of people having this module on a 2620XM, and it being fully functional. This claim gains some credibility because of the fact that in Cisco's own Packet Tracer software, you can install this module on the 2620XM router. I'm looking for a definitive answer. Will this module work on a Cisco 2620? Is there perhaps another way to get a second fast ethernet port on this device?

• Computer turns off unexpectedly

  My computer turns itself off unexpectedly after some time of use. It appears that this might be temperature related, but not for sure. I installed 2 tools that monitor temperature: SpeedFan and CPU Thermometer. The only definite finding is that there is a sensor (labelled temp1 in SpeedFan and CPU in CPU thermometer), which shows a temperature of 108C a second before the computer powers down. Until that moment, this sensor shows a constant temperature of 40C. I can usually reproduce the shutdown by viewing a few movies together, which cause another sensor (labelled CPU in SpeedFan) to go up to 60sC, but I do experience the problem even at times when this sensor remains low and cool. It does seem that the problem is more frequent if the computer is turned back on immediately after shutdown, but not always. I have had other hardware problems recently, which might be related: My hard disk heated up. I installed a fan on it, which worked to reduce the heat. The hard disk sensor shows around 40C. I had occasional blue screens and hard disk failures. Replacing the power supply seems to solve both these issues, but then this powerdown problem began appearing. I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to determine where the fault is, or what needs to be replaced.

  I get a blue screen of death in my windows 98 machine every time I boot it. I can't reach to my desktop. There is no other way to shut down the system at this point except pressing the CPU power button. What could be the problem? • Vista gets stuck in an endless loop while booting

  I put my laptop to sleep last night, and when I woke up this morning... it didn't. So I tried to reboot, and everything went fine until it got to the Vista splash screen, where it's supposed to display the logon. Here, it hits an endless loop: Display the cursor with the blue spinny thing that replaced the hourglass, for 5-10 seconds Display "Please wait..." for about half a second Screen flashes to black, then quickly back to the Vista splash screen Goto step 1 The whole time, my hard LED is on almost non-stop. I can boot into Safe Mode... sometimes. Sometimes it'll load all the drivers, then sit there for about 10 minutes, spinning the hard drive non-stop, then reboot with no warning. I tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration. Didn't fix anything. When I've managed to get into Safe Mode, I tried running CHKDSK. Didn't fix anything. I tried running System Restore to each of my last two restore points. Didn't fix anything either time. I ran a virus scan. Didn't find anything. I tried calling the manufacturer (Alienware), only to discover that my warranty expired last freaking week and now I can't get it fixed without paying exorbitant sums of money. I'm about at my wits' end here. Has anyone seen this problem before? Does anyone know how to fix it? Does anyone know a solution that does not involve reinstalling the OS and losing an entire year's worth of program installations, Windows Updates and configuring and tweaking things until it's working just like I want it to?

• My Linux desktop sees my HDMI-connected monitor, but my monitor says "No signal"

  I have a Gigabyte H55M-UD2H motherboard and an Acer S271HL monitor. When I connect the monitor to the motherboard via VGA, signal works perfectly. When I connect the monitor via HDMI, the system "sees" the connection, but the monitor receives no signal (the monitor shows a blue box which reads "No Signal" and then the monitor goes into power-saving state). • Replacing stock Core 2 Duo heatsink fan (just the fan really) with a Dell CPU fan

  My old heatsink fan broke and I'm trying to reconnect its plugs to a new fan. My Dell CPU fan has some custom Dell plug. I snipped the old fan's wire in half and kept the plug on the end of it. I want to connect it to the Dell fan wire to the plug. The motherboard is a P5Q-e, the stock Core 2 Duo fan was .20A and the dell is .70A. Is that going to matter? The wire from the fan has four wires, the wire with the plug has four wires. They share three, of the four colors: red, black, and blue. Dell's fourth wire is white, while the plug's fourth wire is yellow. Is it safe to assume that I just connect the yellow and the white plug together and match the rest up? I don't want to take any risk of damaging anything. It runs fine passively without a fan, but I have speedstep on, so I would like to use this fan and just fasten it to the heatsink with some twist ties and paperclips and call it a day.

• PPP kernel module fails to load

  I am trying to deal with a problem on a server I don't normally deal with. Out of the blue a script using ppp started failing saying that the ppp kernel module is not loaded. When I try to modprobe it it complains about files missing. Note below that the kernel version the server thinks it at, does not match the kernel version directory in /lib/modules. I'm not sure how this could have happened. Could the other maintainers of the server botched a kernel upgrade? My question is how can I fix this discrepancy. Can I simply rename the lib directory and hope for the best? • Why is Safari on my computer rendering all of the colors -- not just for images -- incorrectly?

  I’m not just talking about image color profile issues; every single color that the browser renders is incorrect. It’s like it’s in it’s own color space (or something!). Screenshot: http://drp.ly/DJk1O (Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox) Spot the odd one out? Open this up in Photoshop or similar and try using the eyedropper to select the colour. Safari renders the same hex color completely differently. That color is set using a background-color declaration in CSS, so it should be identical in all four of those browsers. • BSOD during Cygwin install

  I have been running Cygwin (1.7.7) under Windows Vista 64-bit, SP2 for at least a year, and had no problems with my installation at all until today. When I tried to install apt-cyg, I realized that I needed to get the svn client. During the installation of the package dependencies, Vista threw a blue screen of death. I hoped this was a one-time occurrence, so I rebooted into Vista and tried to install svn again; same result. Next I completely removed Cygwin's directory, and all Cygwin registry entries; at this point, I tried reinstalling the base Cygwin system again. During the installation of bash, I got another BSOD: Apologies for the fuzzy pic, I had to shoot with my phone camera. I googled for BSOD and Cygwin and found a post by Dave Korn mentioning that the only reasons Cygwin should cause a BSOD is because of either ioperm.sys or some USB utilities. I have neither on my system. Every time I have tried reinstalling, Vista BSODs; I have not had problems installing any other software packages on this Vista machine. How can I get Cygwin installed again (without reinstalling Vista)?

I can send music without any problem using iTunes so, from an infrastructure standpoint, I'm all set. 3) I want my computer to say (out of the blue) "Honey, why don't you bring me a cup of coffee". I can make it say that locally on my internal laptop speakers, but I can't seem to send that to device 39 successfully. I am suspecting that there are a few other things that need to be setup before it works, i.e. setting up airplay output to "denon", maybe opening a channel and reserving it. I don't know. Has anyone played with this? Is there a way to setup airplay from the command line? That would be awesome :)

• mod_cache not working

  I have a PHP site that has many dynamically generated pages. I'm trying to turn to mod_cache to help boost performance, because in most cases, content does not change in a given day. I have configured mod_cache as best I could, following examples around the web, including the mod_cache page on apache.org. When I set LogLevel debug, I see a bit of information about the caching that is [not] happening. There are plenty of pairs of lines like this: [Fri Jun 01 17:28:18 2012] [debug] mod_cache.c(141): Adding CACHE_SAVE filter for /foo/bar [Fri Jun 01 17:28:18 2012] [debug] mod_cache.c(148): Adding CACHE_REMOVE_URL filter for /foo/bar Which is fine, because I've set CacheEnable disk /foo, to indicate that I want everything under /foo cached. I'm new to mod_cache, but my understanding about these lines is that it just means that mod_cache has acknowledged that the URL is supposed to be cached, but there are supposed to be more lines indicating that it is saving the data to cache, and then later retrieving them on subsequent hits to the same URL. I can hit the same URL till I'm blue in the face, whether with F5 refreshing, or not, or with different browsers, or different computers. It's always that pair of lines that shows in the logs, and nothing else. When I set CacheEnable disk /, then I see more activity. But I don't want to cache the entire site, and there are many, many different subpaths to the site, so I don't want to have to modify code to set no-cache headers in all the necessary places. I'll mention that mod_rewrite is in use here, rewriting /foo/bar to something like index.php?baz=/foo/bar, but my understanding is that mod_cache uses the pre-rewrite URL, not the post-rewrite URL. As far as I can tell, I have the response headers not getting in the way of caching. • Firefox 3.6 and above. Always show one tab even if all tabs are closed like Firefox 3.0

  I very much got used to Firefox 3.0. In that, to free the memory, I close all tabs but still the main Firefox window does not close. But in Firefox 3.6 and later if I want to close all tabs and if I do so then Firefox totally exists. This is not the case with 3.0. How to stop Firefox from not closing the main process even if I close all threads (tabs)? The autocomplete feature in the address bar of Firefox 3.6 and greater is in a dark blue color which makes me very much annoyed. With my environment and the monitor glare that is inducing anger in me, so how the color be changed to be like Firefox 3.0? Because you know that black and white are a neutral and good combination and since I have been working in Firefox 3.0 (and earlier versions) for a long time this new color change and other uncomfortable options are making me sick. To check CSS3 I need to use Firefox 3.5 and greater. Besides I like Firefox because it includes the W3C's recommendations so I can learn and test new recomendations from W3C.

• Dos/ Flood Lag even though Port not Saturated

  My GameServers had been under some UDP Floods due to which they generated outputs to the attacker which gave the GameServers some huge lags. Thanks to friends at ServerFault that upon different kind of testing, I was able to successfully block the attack. My question is actually something else but it is important to know how the GameServers reacted to the attack and if the machine kept stable or not: 300kb/s Input would cause GameServer to generate 2mb/s Output. So as the Input Rate kept increasing, output rate would reach so high that it would no longer be possible for the GameServer to control it and hence it would give a huge Lag until the attack is stopped. Usually the game server starts to lag when it sends out something greater than 5mb/s and under that is controllable. Theoretically, I was able to receive a 60mb/s output from my GameServer on inputting 10mb/s. Its just the way the GameServer works if not protected. Now on some of my machines, only the GameServer under attack lagged and although the server was generating 60mb/s output, rest of the gameservers on other ports would run fine without lags on the same machine. But there was another machine which also runs on a 100 MBPS Network port, even 1 mbps input ( and ZERO output because attack is blocked ) even on an unused port would give a constant yellow line ( on the Lag-o-Meter ) to all the clients on all GameServers indicating lag because that line is actually blue under normal conditions. It would remain the same even on 50mbps or 900mbps input. I tried contacting the host about it because I believe its the way their Network is bridged, but they can't help me about it. Anyone else knowing about such issues because if 900mbps input does not Saturate the port, how can 1mbps input lag the servers although port is not saturated and enough bandwidth is available?

• Firewall for internal networks

  I have a virtualised infrastructure here, with separated networks (some physically, some just by VLAN) for iSCSI traffic, VMware management traffic, production traffic, etc. The recommendations are of course to not allow access from the LAN to the iSCSI network for example, for obvious security and performance reasons, and same between DMZ/LAN, etc. The problem I have is that in reality, some services do need access across the networks from time to time: System monitoring server needs to see the ESX hosts and the SAN for SNMP VSphere guest console access needs direct access to the ESX host the VM is running on VMware Converter wants access to the ESX host the VM will be created on The SAN email notification system wants access to our mail server Rather than wildly opening up the entire network, I'd like to place a firewall spanning these networks, so I can allow just the access required For example: SAN SMTP Server for email Management SAN for monitoring via SNMP Management ESX for monitoring via SNMP Target Server ESX for VMConverter Can someone recommend a free firewall that will allow this kind of thing without too much low-level tinkering of config files? I've used products such as IPcop before, and it seems to be possible to achieve this using that product if I re-purpose their ideas of "WAN", "WLAN" (the red/green/orange/blue interfaces), but was wondering if there were any other accepted products for this sort of thing. • Broken filesystem on Windows XP / 7 virtual machine

  I created a virtual machine with Windows XP as the guest system in Microsoft's Virtual PC that ships along with Windows 7. I then installed Virtualbox and began running the MS machine in it. It worked fine. Then, I accidentally started the machine in Microsoft's Virtual PC again. The screen stayed blank, so after a while, realizing my mistake, I closed the Machine. Since then, the VM won't start any more, claiming massive file system problems. Starting Windows in normal mode results in a SOMETHING_FILESYSTEM blue screen; I can start in protected mode and run a checkdisk. That will fix something on every run, but every time I restart, it will start again. I tried re-booting the VM with the Windows CD and doing a repair install. I didn't watch whether that worked out, but I'm caught in the reset / check disk / reset cycle again. Is there anything VM specific that can still be done? On a physical machine, I would say reformat. Is there any way to get hold of the data on the virtual machine through either Virtual PC or Virtualbox? It was an experimental machine, but I had started entering some data on it that would be nice to recover.

• How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Apple Macbook Pro MacBookPro4,1

  I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support. • BSOD: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

  I built a desktop about a year ago that has, until a few weeks ago, been running without a hitch using Windows 7 Ultimate. Recently, the PC started occasionally rebooting with a blue screen indicating a "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" error. Also, I've seen at least once the error IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I seem to remember temporarily connecting an internal DVD burner about the same time this happened. I burned a DVD for another machine and promptly removed the drive. Yesterday, I reformatted the drive and installed Win7 Ultimate x64. During the first install, the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT bluescreen reared its ugly head again. A second install attempt completed with no errors. The fact that this error happened during a clean install leads me to believe that this is not a driver or OS issue. I also ran the memory diagnostic from the Win7 32-bit install DVD. It completed both passes with no errors. Periodically, the screen will flicker, as if explorer or the video are resetting. In the event log, I see a series of 8 or so errors indicating that some services unexpectedly stopped, and were apparently reset. These include an HID service and some others (I don't have a list in front of me). The PC is a Phenom X2 3 Ghz with a 500GB Seagate drive, 4GB of Corsair XMS2 cm2x2048-6400c5c. Anyone know what would suddenly cause a couple of sticks of RAM to go bad?

• How to fix Quicktime video color problems on nVidia chipset and Windows XP?

  My laptop frequently plays video as if in very low-color mode. Though the sound remains clear, it looks terrible, showing only a few shades of red, blue, or yellow. (It's even worse than 8-bit color.) The problem doesn't happen consistently, so I'm looking for troubleshooting advice or known solutions. I use a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with Windows XP, on-board nVidia video chipset, Quicktime, and multiple monitors (laptop screen + VGA-connected LCD). Color problems happen in each application I tried, iTunes, a browser, and the Quicktime standalone player. It doesn't happen right after reboot, so could be from a sleep-wake cycle, or at least being on for an extended period. Google results suggest reinstalling nVidia drivers, which I've done several times with no change. I have found 2 workarounds. Reboot, sacrificing significant time and disrupting work In nVidia control panel, change color to 16-bit, and then back to 32-bit This happens with all video playback, so it's definitely not one corrupt file. I use workaround #2 consistently, but would love a longer-term solution.

• No video signal and server shuts down

  I have a brand new server. The motherboard is Intel S2600CP4, two 8-core Intel E5-2600 processors. RAM is 8 DIMM slots of 8 GB each (KVR1600D3D4R11SK4/32GI, I installed them into the blue slots), Power supply is 1050W Corsair. Most of the time the server won't start up - the fans are spinning, but I don't have video signal. And it keeps restarting on its own every 3 mins. But maybe after 30 mins it will eventually load and show something on the screen. I even was able to install ESXi 5.0 (vSphere) on it. It recognizes both CPUs and all of the 64GB of RAM. But even then it worked only for around 5 hours and then restarted on its own. What's the problem? That's a very expensive peace of hardware and I can't afford purchasing a new motherboard/CPU. By the way, on the front panel the "System Status" LED is constantly amber (not blinking), even when the server started successfully. And also in the BIOS I can see lots of "processor 01 unable to apply microcode update 8160" fatal errors. Please help me with issue, I will really appreciate this!

• Windows 7 task bar stuck in hiding, how to fix?

  In Windows 7, I use the "Auto-hide the task bar" feature. Usually, it works fine: As soon as the pointer touches the screen bottom, the task bar pops up. However sometimes, it refuses to rise. Pressing the "Windows" key (or Ctrl-ESC) makes the start menu appear, forcing the task bar from hinding as well. Once I've done this, the task-bar auto-rises again. This is annoying, it interrupts flow. Has anyone else noticed this? How do I avoid this? To reproduce this behavior, I tried switching between apps, and bringing apps to open other windows. I am unable to reproduce this behavior so far. So far, it appears to happen out of the blue, sometimes multiple times a day. Looks like a bug to me. The task bar should raise no matter what.

• How can I display additional boot and shutdown information on the Windows 7 welcome screen?

  There is a small tweak, I believe it is a registry key, that allows to display additional information on the Welcome and Shutting down screens of Windows 7 (and most likely Vista, too). I have activated this tweak on one of my systems; unfortunately I forgot how I did it, and I can't seem to find the website that originally gave me that information. Usually, the Windows 7 welcome screen will just display "Welcome" when logging in. With the tweak activated, my Welcome screen gives status information such as "Loading user settings" or "Preparing desktop". When shutting down, the default screen simply says "Shutting down". With the tweak activated, it gives additional status information such as "Stopping Windows services". This appears the same way that Windows gives information when updates are installed or configured during the startup or shutdown procedure, and I find them quite helpful in getting a feel for what task takes how long during that process. The only setting I was able to find is the Boot log checkbox on the Boot tab of the msconfig application. However, this results in Windows displaying console logs of drivers it is loading, etc., instead of the animated Windows title. This is NOT the setting I am looking for. The "additional boot information" setting that I have activated on this system still displays the regular animated Windows logo, and only replaces the strings displayed on the blue Welcome and Shutdown screens. Could someone direct me to the registry key (or whatever setting) that is used to get this behaviour?
