  I have multiple servers in WEB cluster (identical configuration for all of them, despite the IP) How do you deploy changes in configs on multile servers? I make the new config, then create config per every server (placing correct IP), and next: upload them on every server, replacing old ones (rsync over ssh) set on every server a job which reloads webserver at the same time (servers use ntp). - this done by issuing commands by script (to save time for logging in) before adding a job for server reload - there's checksum test of the config on the server) - an a notification in case of fail How do you see such method? What should be the "professional way :) ? (I don't say my way doesn't work... it works and saves my time not used for logging on every webserver.) Regards,

• How to limit server to specific IP addresses with mod_authz_host?

  Hi! I am very new to this area, so please bear with me. :) Right now I am running an Apache HTTP server on my setup, a very basic configuration. The website hosted on it is accessible from anywhere, and I want to limit the access to a specific IP address range. I've looked into this and I found that one Apache module called mod_authz_host handles this. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authz_host.html The problem is, I haven't managed to find documentation that explains well how to actually do the stuff. How do I actually make sure only a certain range of IP addresses can access my site/server? The machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.10, the web files are stored in /var/www/, the apache2 daemon has its stuff stored in /etc/apache2/ and /usr/lib/apache2/modules/*.   I have a really specific machine configuration in the works that would really be helped out if there were any way to do this...basically what I'm looking for is the opposite of setting CPU Affinity for a process. I want to be able to tell Windows "No applications except [x] are allowed on [these cores]." Is there any mechanism whatsoever for doing this? (Yes, I am aware of some of the potential issues this could cause and I normally would never fool with processor affinities, since the OS usually does a damned good job itself, but this is a pretty odd situation involving some software that is very CPU-bound constantly having to wait on interrupts and DPCs and things from other threads.)

  using the HAProxy, would it be possible to configure an overload protection, to limit the amount of requests sent to the backing http server(s) to a given rate (z.B 100 Request per second ). If the threshold is exceeded requests should be answered with a default response. I am interested in requests per second not connections per second as a connection can have many requests. And yes to improve the servers is not an option here. If yes a configuration example to achieve that would be excellent. Thank you in advance.

  I would like to automate code-first database generation during the automated CI build of a web project in Team Foundation Server 2010. When run locally the tests create a code-first database specified by the connection string in the app.config of the tests project. How do I configure the TFS Build Configuration to mimic this behaviour on the TFS build server? Edit The problem, it turns out, was that the TFS build server was successfully running the test which was using the default connection string in the app.config which pointed to the local SQL Server, not where I expected it. The solution was to use SlowCheetah on the TFS server as a means to transform the App.config file using the QA transform as per this blog article.

• What could slow Excel on one PC but not another?

  I have 2 PC with the same configuration. I open an Excel File (~5M) on the network from both PC. The opening is not the fastest but that's ok. The problem is that on one PC, Excel is really slow. I mean if I hit the left arrow 10 times, I will have finished hitting like 3 seconds before the active cell is the next 10th one. The file contains graphics that takes time to initialize on the slowed computer. Both PC have the same graphic cards, same driver version; both remote access to the file on a local network. Both configured to perform calculations automatically. Both Excel 2007. Both Windows 32bit. On the other PC it runs really fast. I really don't know what to check next. Any suggestions ?

• ChannelFactory don't have an address on the endpoint, why?

  When I create a new instance of a ChannelFactory: var factory = new ChannelFactory<IMyService>(); and that I create a new channel, I have an exception saying that the address of the Endpoint is null. My configuration inside my web.config is as mentioned and everything is as it is supposed to be (especially the address of the endpoint).   Firstly, my machines aren't compromised any person suggesting such will be DV'd. The security logs on some of my networks client machines (all Windows Xp Sp3) get filled with these useless error messages. Security Failure Audit Detailed Tracking Event ID: 861 User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE The Windows Firewall has detected an application listening for incoming traffic. Name: - Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe Process identifier: 976 User account: NETWORK SERVICE User domain: NT AUTHORITY Service: Yes RPC server: No IP version: IPv4 IP protocol: UDP Port number: 55035 Allowed: No User notified: No It's always on various random ports of UDP so setting up a port exception isn't really an option. It's always from svchost or lsass both of which are running services from DLLs. One of the most offending processes seems to the be DnsCache. I have in my global policy under AT < Network < Network Connection < Widnows Firewall < Domain Profile (I haven't changed any standard profile options do both need configured? To allow remote administration and desktop exceptions and have a custom program exception list that has %SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe:*:enabled:svchost (Windows won't allow you to add this exception on a local machine but it let me have it on here in the global policy it just doesn't seem to do anything) %SystemRoot%\system32\lsass.exe:*enabled:lsass (I think this one ended all of my LSASS messages) %SystemRoot%\system32\dnsrslvr.dll:*:enabled:dnscache (I tried adding the dll itself to the exception list, this didn't seem to do anything) Is there really any other options left other than disabling the Windows Firewall entirely, disabling auditing entirely or just changing the event viewer to just auto overwrite when needed? I'd much rather fix the problem and get rid of these entries ever being created instead of just trying to cover up the problem.

• How to use Salt Stack with minions all behind NAT (not publicly accessible, default salt ports not open)?

  Can Salt Stack minions communicate with the salt master from behind NAT/Firewalls, etc., using standard ports that would be open be default in all consumer NAT routers (and without the minions having a public DNS record or static IP)? I'm working my way through my first salt tutorial, and this is where I'm stuck. I am able to configure iptables on the Ubuntu salt-master. But I have no control over the routers/NAT that the minions will sit behind. So far I tried these settings: /etc/salt/master: publish_port: 465 ret_port: 443 /etc/salt/minion: master_port: 465 That did not work. Background: I have a custom developed application presently running on about 40 Kubuntu laptops (& more planned). Every few months I have to update the application. (Often this just amounts to replacing a .jar file, which requires root permissions.) I also have to run Ubuntu updates and a few other minor things. I've been doing it manually, one by one, using Team Viewer to log into each client. I would like to dramatically improve this process. The two options I'm aware of are either: use reverse ssh tunnels and bash scripts. I tested this and it works. But I don't get any of the reporting, etc., I would get with Salt Stack. use Salt Stack (or similar) management tool. But I need a really simple tool. I can't invest any time in a big learning curve. I looked at Puppet and a bunch of related tools. The only one I found that looked simple enough for me (so far) was Salt Stack. But I'm stuck now because my minion can't reach the salt-master, as stated above. I appreciate suggestions.

So, how to access the similar specific features of Windows Defender on Windows 8?

• Trying to run a codeigniter app on custom php

I didn't want to upgrade php and risk the other app on the server having issues. And if I try to browse to /cgi-bin it says (what it is supposed to?): You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/ on this server. Quite confused now. Anyone know what to do here? Thanks :)

• CloudFront with Custom Origin and ELB

  We are using CloudFront for our static assets but also wanted to allow for Gzip. We set up a new distribution with a custom origin pointing back to our application servers which are behind a elastic load balancer. We manually keep the files in sync across the cluster and update them when we publish. However, with this set up, we get nothing but Miss and RefreshHits from CloudFront, which so far has defeated the purpose. Is there any additional settings in order to use an ELB as your custom origin? In the docs, it references this as a viable solution. It appears when we point the distribution to a single server in our production cluster, cloudfront properly caches our assets. Is it possible that the sticky sessions cookie and the subsequent header that gets added by it could be an issue? Cache-Control: no-cache="set-cookie" //Added by load balancer Any ideas? FYI - currently, we have our custom origin pointing to a single EC2 instance, so caching is working correctly - in case you try to curl the file below. • How to make quicksilver remember custom trigger

  I am trying to make a custom trigger for my shell/apple script file to run so I can just launch my dev environment at the push of a button. So basically: I have a shell script(and some apple script included) in ~ named start_server.sh which does 3 things: start up solr server start up memcached start up script/server I have a saved quicksilver command(.qs) that opens up start_server.sh(so start_server.sh, then the action is "Run in Terminal") I created a custom trigger that calls this saved qs command. I did that then tested it and it works. I then tried to double check it so I quit quicksilver and when I checked the triggers it just said: "Open (null)" as the action. I set the trigger again and when i restarted QS the same thing happened again. I don't know why but my old custom trigger to open terminal has worked since forever so why doesn't this one work? • MS Word custom dictionary making spellcheck slow - ideas?

  I have a user who edits technical materials. She uses MS Word's Custom Dictionary all the time for spelling; it has grown very large, and is now making spell check very slow. All of the advice I've read online says to disable the custom dictionary. This is an easy solution, but is not workable for the user, because she actually needs this dictionary. So, is there any way to optimize the custom dictionary and/or Word itself, so that a large dictionary file doesn't slow things down quite so badly? Many thanks. Update after suggestions: I ran contig on the file, and it reports just 1 frag, so that's not the issue I think. The file is 9.95KB -- 1,117 lines, each consisting of just a single word. I viewed the file using Notepad and none of the lines seems corrupted, strange, or overly long (no line seems to be over 10 chars or so). Both of your suggestions were helpful so I will upvote both; any further tips would be most welcome.

• VMWare ESXi, change the default path for a VM

  For some reason VMWare ESXi has decided that one of my VMs is on a completely different path to the path it is actually on. So my VM is on /vmfs/volumes/long-guid-here/my-vm-name but when I try to open it I get the message "File < unspecified filename was not found." Which is not really surprising as unspecified filenames are quite difficult to locate. I thought it was just the swap file, which was down in the .vmx file as /vmfs/volumes/long-guid-here/old-vm-name/old-vm-name.vmsd but when I changed that in the vmx it made no difference. What I can't figure out is where VMWare is getting the old-vm-name from- when I look in the "Settings" pane it believes the working file location to be "[datastore-name] old-vm-name\" and I can't find anywhere to change it. Now the files themselves are all named for old-vm-name - so the directory is /my-vm-name/old-vm-name.vmx and so on. Is this the cause of my problems or is there some arcane configuration option elsewhere around the VMWare machine that I need to be tinkering with?

Now I've configured my Solr instance so that it works on Tomcat (the example admin page), but if I try to change the sorlconfig.xml file i'll get the error message. • Xdebug configuration with PHP fastcgi and eclipse?

  I have been using eclipse-pdt in conjunction with xdebug and apache without problems, for over one year. Things worked flawlessly and I could do all the interactive debugging I wanted from within eclipse (using my own machine as a server). Now I switched from apache to nginx (and therefore PHP runs now not as an Apache service but as fast-cgi) and I can't find a way to configure eclipse to work nicely with xdebug. I am neither sure if the problem is with xdebug or with eclipse (or both) to be sure. In the eclipse configuration I already changed the reference to the PHP configuration file to /etc/php5/cli/php.ini. Attempts with php.ini version 1 With the following php.ini file zend_extension=/usr/lib/php5/20060613/xdebug.so I see that xdebug is working (for example if I do a var_dump() I get the xdebug version of it, not the plain PHP one) I can't have the interactive debugging from eclipse: the browser opens up and loads the page completely with the typical URL containing ...?XDEBUG_SESSION_START=ECLIPSE_DBGP&KEY=..., but the program execution does not stop at breakpoints In the bottom-right corner of eclipse I see a suspicious message: *"Launching =put_the_name_of_my_project_here=: 57%"* that alternates with the "refreshing workspace" one.
