• DXVA and ATI.... what am I missing?

  ATI Radeon HD3650 ffdshow (the one comes with CCCP 2010-10 AND the latest from Free-codecs site) Catalyst 10.12 Latest DirectX, Windows 7 HP x64 If I try to play it simply, the player (mpc-hc) won't use the acceleration. If I disable checks, I get artifacts. Back then it worked perfectly with my Intel and ATI too (Lenovo ThinkPad T500, switchable graphics). This only appeared recently. What should I do? What am I missing? If possible, I don't really want to downgrade drivers (waaa ATI drivers s.ck ... sorry but.. honestly), because the older one got a buggy DP driver so my external display gets a totally wrong resolution. • Asus K55VM usb 3.0 issue

  Good day superusers! I own the above laptop and I found out that there are some unknown and unusual issues with usb 3.0 ports. I haven't noticed anything strange until now. I got a new toshiba usb 3.0 external hdd and when I try to copy larger amount of data from my disk to the external hdd, the OS(windows 7) randomly starts ignoring the external hdd. It doesn't shut it down, it kinda just stops responding but the light on the hdd is still lit. I get an error that the files cannot be copied. I have reinstalled windows 7, installed all drivers(including intel chipset drivers of course) and the issue is still present. It acts normal when copying small amount of data. Also, I heard that some intel chipsets have an issue with usb, something about the connectors not transferring power when the usb device enters some kind of "low power mode" causing the device to stop responding and you need to plug it out and in again. But the thing is, my Intel® Chief River Chipset HM76 is not on the list of affected hardware(not ENTIRELY sure though). If anyone has any idea of what the problem to this might be, I'd be greatful. Edit: The hdd works perfectly fine even for large amounts of data if plugged in the usb 2.0 port!

• Windows 7 Not Recognizing Camera Nor iPhone as Camera

  I've been struggling with this one for a few days. I've recently upgraded an older computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. Neither my digital camera (A Canon SD1200IS) nor iPhone are ever detected as cameras, nor ever show up as accessable in Explorer. With the Canon camera, no driver is required. It's supposed to work with the default Windows 7 drivers. However, in the Control Panel's Device Manager, I'm always seeing a yellow icon next to the "Canon Digital Camera" device. I've uninstalled the device and let Windows attempt to reinstall, but it can never find a driver to install. With the iPhone, it's very similar. One big difference, though, is that iTunes can see the iPhone and back it up, etc. However, again when I go to the Device Manager, there's a yellow icon next to the iPhone. I've uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled, rebooted, deleted drivers, and let Window try to reinstall the driver, but it can never find the driver. So there seems to be some correlation that my machine can't detect cameras properly, and that it might be even a lower-level type of driver I'm struggling with. I know that USB however, does work, because I have have an external drive hooked into the machine. I've gone through the web and tried two hours worth of fixes, without success. I feel like if I can get the Canon camera detected, then the iPhone will be on it's way to being fixed too. BTW, I couldn't really find anything of use in the Event viewer. Any and all suggestions welcome.

• Ubuntu purple splash screen with blinking pixels?

  I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot). Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time) After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem) Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system admnistration hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related) I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-294692.html But couldn't understand the conversation (i'm a linux novice) Sorry for my horrible english.. • Why is my second monitor not working?

  Since I have my new computer, I have a very weird problem. Facts: New Computer: Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro 3 Graphics-card: Asus1GB D5 X EN GTX560 DCII OC/2DI R CPU: Intel i5-3570 Windows 7 64bit 500W beQuiet special edition (92% efficiency) 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Corsair RAM (CL9) Scythe Mugen 2 2 magnetic HDDs + 1 SDD 1 DVD-R Old Computer: Motherboard: Asus P55 something Graphics-card: Asus1GB D5 X EN GTX560 DCII OC/2DI R CPU: Intel i7-870 Windows 7 64bit 550W Corsair 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Corsair RAM (CL9) Scythe Mugen 3 2 magnetic HDDs + 1 SDD 1 DVD-R On the old computer it worked fine with two monitors. Moving to the new (I took the same Graphics-card) it only works with one. The weird thing I mentioned is: not matter which one. But if I put both there, only one is available. There is no reaction at the start (where normally (at least if I remember correctly) the monitor shortly went from "standby" to "on"). Windows does not recognize a second monitor in the Device Manager. I have the latest drivers for Motherboard and Graphics-card. I have the latest BIOS drivers. I am out of ideas. • How do I install a different OS on a Compaq Presario cq56 with preinstalled SuSE 11?

  Thing is, I don't have a clue of Linux systems, I usually use WinXP. Bought a notebook with SuSE 11 on it, because I have my XP licence and thought I could install that if I found the chipset drivers for the hardware (which I'm not completely sure I have the right versions of). Then I thought I'd give it a shot with the SuSE, looked nice enough. But I can't get my external hd to work (tried force mount) and the banshee doesn't do anything like playing video. Since that is one of the two main purposes of this notebook, I need to get that to work. Tried downloading VLC player, but that only works with SuSE 11.1 upwards. So I downloaded a SuSE 11.3 and burned the iso. But surprise, no way the notebook would boot from cd. Same with the XP cd (considered setting up a dual boot). And no, I can't get to BIOS to reset to default, either. So I can basically do nothing else than going online with this thing and that's not enough for me (gamer in withdrawal, yikes!). I need at least to get to my firefox profile on the external hd and be able to watch video. Can somebody please help me? I think at this point I'd prefer to install XP and MAYBE the SuSE 11.3 after that. I'm not a native speaker, so please speak plainly, thanks. :) Edit: if this is impossible, could someone please help me with the external hd mount and video playback? Edit: Found out how to boot from cd by now. But still no XP, because I get bluescreen after bluescreen while setup is loading files. I guess it's the missing SATA drivers...

• Hyper-V: Dedicated NIC for Guests VMs

  I have two NIC cards and created a private virtual network for my virtual machines and unchecked "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" which basically turns my Guest NIC into this sorta shell of a NIC card on the host machine and the only thing checked in it's properties is "Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol" which I am fine with. Everything works and everything is connected. My issue is that for some reason my guest (Ubuntu Server with legacy network drivers) is not talking properly to my DHCP server. Specifically my DHCP server reserves the guest's IP address using it's MAC address but the guest isn't picking it up. It's picking up any old IP it can get and I can't even ping the hostname from another PC on the network but it pings fine if I use the IP. I see the guest showing up in my DHCP table but I can't get the reservation to stick. Is there some reason it's only partially communicating with my DHCP server? Pinging it's hostname on itself reveals it's using 127.0.0.1 instead of it's network IP. Is this an issue with the legacy drivers used in Hyper-V?

• Turning on Bluetooth disables wifi on Yoga 2

  I have a Lenovo Yoga 2. The moment that I turn on bluetooth, the wifi drops out - I lose connection, and connecting again shows "connection failed". If I turn the bluetooth off, wifi can reestablish fine. I've tried lots of different combinations of drivers for both the wifi and the bluetooth, but no combination has has changed this behavior yet. I've read some speculation that the cards have insufficient shielding, but that seems like kind of a large flaw to ship with. I've tried with a Carbon X1, a Yoga 2 Pro, and a Yoga 2 all next to each other on the desk while running InSSIDer. The X1 and the Y2P don't lose wifi connection when the bluetooth turns on, but the Y2 does immediately. The Y2P and the Y2 are running the same drivers for bluetooth and wifi, and appear to have the same wireless card internally. During the failure state, InSSIDer still sees signal strength for my network, but I cannot connect to it. stats: the card that comes in the laptop is an Intel Wireless-N 7260 Intel Bluetooth driver is at 17.0.1401.422 Intel Wireless driver is at 17.0.2.5 Windows 8.1 x64 Home wifi is a Medialink MWN-WAPR150N

• Why does the screen resolution of 1440x900 suddenly disappears from Intel GMA Control Panel?

  I'm using a Vostro 1200 laptop with the Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset powering its graphics and running Vista 32-bit SP2 . I've been using the Vostro with a Dell SE198WFP LCD Monitor as the external display since day one for about two years without any problems. Recently, I plugged the Vostro into a couple of other monitors. The problem is, now the native resolution for my main monitor's (the SE198WFP) resolution of 1440x900 @ 60 Hz is no longer available. (See below) I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel drivers as well as the monitor drivers to no avail. I've Goggled that this problem and it appears that this has happened to other people but all the answers involve people giving up in frustration or reinstalling; both terrible outcomes. Has anybody ever figured why this happens and have a good solution? Thanks. UPDATE: This dude has a complicated solution, which I haven't tried yet. His explanations for the problem was After an exausting search for an answer to the matter of why my brand new 19? widescreen monitor’s native resolution (1440×900) was unavailible (sic) in the display properties, I finally stumbled upon an article a person posted on Intel’s forums that basically explained what shannanigans Intel had been up to with their GMA 950 line of onboard graphic solutions. Not very comforting.

• Expresscard Not Detected in PCI-E Adapter

  I'm trying to put an expresscard TV tuner (Avermedia HC82) into my HTPC using this expresscard to PCI-E adapter. I've verified that the tuner works fine in my laptop. The motherboard is a Biostar TF7050-M2. When I install it and turn it on, the light on the back of the adapter comes on fine (there are two indicator lights on the back to show if it is using PCI-E or USB communication, USB communication goes through a USB cable connected between the card and a header on the motherboard) showing that it is working in PCI-E mode. However, the device is never detected in Windows 7 Professional x64. The auto detect never happens, it doesn't show up in the device manager, and I can have it rescan for new hardware and nothing is found. I tested the whole setup (tuner + adapter) in another PC (also using Win 7 Pro x64) and it worked fine. I also tried: Plugging the adapter in to the PCI-E x16 slot on the motherboard (I verified first that the x16 slot worked by installing a video card in it) Booting into safe mode and rescanning Updating the chipset drivers Installing the tuner drivers first Using a different USB cable, plugged in to one of the known good ports on the back of the board Trying it without the USB cable plugged in Removing the other PCI cards that were installed on the board Looking through the BIOS for any setting that might be disabling it somehow to no avail. I'm at a loss for what else to try. I really don't want to RMA it (the shipping back to newegg will be almost as much as it cost to buy in the first place. Any ideas?

• Asus PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter on 3.x kernel

  Problem ASUS PCE-N53 wireless NIC doesn't work for latest versions of the linux kernel. How do I get it working on my system? (Note: I'm posting the answer I've found for others to use.) Installing Driver for Linux 3.x Kernel ASUS provides Linux drivers from their website, but it mentions that the driver supports "Linux Kernel 2.6.x", so it won't work without a some modifications to the driver code. Fortunately, an archlinux forum mentions similar problems and one user was able to create a patch for kernel 3.8.x that seems to work with kernel 3.11.x. Here's how I got it working: Prerequisites Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install build-essential Arch: sudo pacman -S base-devel Steps: 1. Download the driver from the ASUS website The download can be found under "Support Drivers & Tools". 2. Unzip the contents of the downloaded file cd into the new directory 3. Patch The arch forum mentions a 3.8 patch file that needs to be downloaded. Download rt5592sta_fix_64bit_3.8.patch to the current directory. tar -xvf {driver_source.tar.gz} cd into the directory created in previous step patch -p1 < ../rt5592sta_fix_64bit_3.8.patch 4. Compile NOTE: You will need to use sudo for it to compile properly. sudo make sudo make install sudo modprobe rt5592sta 5. Enjoy If all is well, you should now have a working card.

• Printer spooler service stop running when sent print job

  Every time i am sending a print job to the printer, i am don't get any response from the printer, and at the printer job list at the status of the job, i see that there was an Error, but it don't give me any clue on what could be the problem. After some investigation i found that every time that i send the print job to the printer the printer spooler service stops to run, then after a second or two it start again (i think that this behavior is related to the printer spooler settings to rerun it self after it stops). Things that i have tried so far: Remove and Install again the Driver. After removing the driver, i have removed the unnecessary registry keys according to this article from Microsoft, these are: Rename all files and folders in: c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 Remove anything but Drivers Print and Processors: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Windows NT x86 Remove anything in here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors but: BJ Language Monitor Local Port Microsoft Document Imaging Writer Monitor Microsoft Shared Fax Monitor Standard TCP/IP Port USB Monitor WSD Port Disconnect and Reconnect the Printer. Clean the computer from Viruses & Spywares. Currently i am stuck, i have no more things to try, if anybody know about any kind of solution please let me know about it. Since i am want to keep this post as general problem that relate to the printer spooler, and not just my particular problem, i didn't included inside the windows version & the printer model, they are (although i think that it isn't relate just for that particular model): Windows 7 32bit, HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m (connect to the computer via USB). • Adding Windows 7 32 bit as dual boot option

  A relative of mine has bought a new laptop this year on which windows 7 (64 bit) is installed. Aside some standard programs he uses on that laptop, he also has some software for his bike that needs to run. The developers of that program still don't support 64-bit systems and therefor I thought about making it dual boot, so he can still use the power of the 64-bit, and just for the bike program, he can initiate the 32-bit version. My questions now are: What are the risks involved in this operation? What steps need to be taken to make this dual boot succesful? Any other ideas besides dual booting? Thanks in advance. Edit I might have forgotten/misphrased something. The software does run on 64-bit, but it cannot find the bike connected to the computer. So I think it's a matter drivers which aren't compatible with the 64-bit system. That's why I wanted to install the 32-bit windows so the drivers would work.

• Logitech Performance MX Mouse Jumps on OS X Lion (10.7.4)

  I have a Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse that I am trying to use with OS X Lion. Everything is working except for one problem... there is a small, but quite noticeable, jump when the mouse cursor is moved. The problem is mostly prevalent when dragging and dropping files or trying to highlight items. It makes performing any task with the mouse accurately next to impossible. I did quite a bit of looking and found that all kinds of people have had mouse issues with OS X. I've tried all of the following with absolutely no success: Using the official drivers from Logitech (these performed worse than the default mouse drivers in OS X) Using SteerMouse as a third party mouse driver. This worked ever so slightly better than the default driver, but still suffered quite frequently from the skipping problem Cleaning the sensor on the mouse and ensuring it's not the result of the surface that it's being used on. Tested the mouse on a Windows machine. The mouse worked absolutely flawlessly on the other machine. Changed the channel that my wireless router operates on by the off chance my problems were the result of interference. This also had no effect. I can't think of anything else that could possibly interfere with the mouse. I'm am out of ideas on what to try, so I would really appreciate if anyone has any suggestions. I should also mention that an old wired mouse I had laying around worked just fine when I plugged it in. This really isn't the best solution, however, as I really prefer the MX Revolution.

• Computer Won't Boot Properly, unless in safe mode?

  I bought a computer today and booted it up, but when I did I only got a blank screen. I checked to make sure it wasn't the monitor by connecting it to my old computer...it worked. I then tried connecting my monitor to both DVI ports and found that the bottom one did work. However, now it just boots up and says "loading windows" and then when the login screen is suppose to come up the screen just goes blank and monitor says "no input, check cord" (or something like that). I tried reinstalling windows and then I was able to log on normally. I used the CD's and reinstalled all the drivers, then rebooted...now I am stuck right back where I started. I tried taking out the RAM and inserting into different slots, that didn't fix anything. I was able to boot up into windows using safe-mode. I suspected that my ATI Radeon 6950 was the issue and downloaded the drivers, but I can't install them on safe-mode. Someone said to install C++ distr. and I tried doing that to fix driver installation problem of "failed to load detection driver" but it wouldn't let me do that either. Please someone help me, I don't want to have to deal with the evil redtape of sending it back to get a replacement! • keyboard intermittently stops working, even after reinstalling windows 7; possibly a Chrome issue?

  My keyboard intermittently stops working. Sometimes a couple of keys will work, but usually none. Sometimes if I mash a couple of the ctrl+alt+windows type keys randomly for a bit, the keyboard will let me type one more letter before stopping again. Sometimes the keys will open a program menu, but usually not. I have even completely wiped my machine and reinstalled windows 7; the problem continues. Specs: Intel iMac (early 2006, 2.0GHz, 2MB RAM, 240GB HD) running ONLY Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit (NOT through boot camp) and using a USB keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II.) *Unplugging & reconnecting keyboard does NOT fix it. *Connecting a different keyboard does NOT fix it. That one won't work, either. *Drivers are up-to-date. Removing and reinstalling drivers does NOT fix it. *Restarting the computer does NOT fix it. In fact, when the Windows logon screen appears, they keyboard won't work, and neither will the icon to pull up the on-screen keyboard. Otherwise my mouse can click around just fine. I can only log onto a non-password protected account. *Generally, logging into as different Windows user fixes it. I can then log back on to my main user account and continue work for a few hours until it happens again. *Clearing my Chrome browsing data stopped the problem from recurring for a week or so. *I use Avira free antivirus software, and repeated scans turn up nothing fishy. *I have already REINSTALLED Windows 7 (not just a restore.) The problem returned after 2 days of use. The only thing I suspect is something in Google Chrome -- I used my google account to reload all my previous Chrome extensions, saved data, etc. (Chrome Extensions Installed: AdBlock, Better Google Tasks, DropBox, FB Photo Zoom, Google Mail Checker, StayFocusd.) Any ideas? Any at all?

• Win 7 crashes, PC reboots and says "Hard drive 0 not found" until I turn if off and on again

  I recently made the move from Windows XP to Windows 7. Since then, when my computer is on for a few hours it always ends up rebooting without warning. Then the BIOS won't recognize my hard drive (hard drive 0 not found). If I turn off my computer and then on again, it boots normally. Some details: Dell Dimension 9150 Windows 7 I updated the BIOS I updated all system drivers with the latest version from Dell (SATA, Chipset, etc.) Other drivers updated too (Graphic card, sound, etc.) There is one thing that I tried after some Googling: I turned off the DMA access to the drives, but it's still rebooting after a few hours. Any clue? UPDATE 2010/12/13 Here are the events from the Event Log for today, from when I turned the computer on until it crashed: 19:17 - Error - ID 10016 - DistributedCom 20:06 - Error - ID 1008 - Customer Improvement Program (could not send data to Microsoft) 21:48 - Critical - ID 41 - Kernel-Power (System was restarted without proper shutdown) 21:48 - Error - ID 6008 - EventLog (Previous system down was not planned) 21:48 - Error - ID 1101 - EventLog (Audit Event ignored) 21:49 - Error - ID 10016 - DistributedCom Both DistributedCom events have a description along these lines (translated from French): The authorisation parameters specific to the application are not allowing Local Execeution for the COM server application with the CLSID {C97FCC79-E628-407D-AE68-A06AD6D8B4D1} and the APPID {344ED43D-D086-4961-86A6-1106F4ACAD9B} to the SID AUTHORITY NT\User System (S-1-5-18) from the address LocalHost (LRPC usage). This security authorisation can be changed with the Component service administration tool. • No sound Ubuntu 10.10 (have SB Live! card)

  I am new to Linux/Ubuntu and I just installed 10.10 on my Dell Desktop PC that was running Windows XP. The PC is about 5-6 years old and the sound card it has is a SoundBlaster Live! card. The Sound Preferences recognizes the card as [SB Live! Value] EMU10k1X. It is currently set to Analog Stereo Duplex. I tried multiple other sound configurations and nothing works. No sound but some clicks come out of the speakers. I ran the system test and during the audio tests the same thing happened, just clicks and pops. I tried to play some music with Rhythmbox and when it tries to play a track it tries for several seconds and then just closes itself, or sometimes just doesn't play. I ran a check for drivers, but the only driver it found to install was for my nVidia video card. It did not show any drivers for the sound card. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get the sound to work?

• Is there any way to tweak / rotate mouse orientation? Any applications? Registry edits?

  I've got a very frustrating issue with my new Logitech Marathon Mouse M705. It is absolutely perfect for what I need, with the exception that it tracks on an angle for some reason. What I mean is when you slide the cursor to the left, it trends upward - when you slide to the right, it trends down. Moving the cursor along a flat horizontal line is no longer a natural motion - you need to fight what I suspect is a mechanical error of some kind. Unfortunately, I've already exchanged this mouse once and tested both on different Windows 7 and Mac OS X machines - the problem continues to occur. Is there a software solution for me? I'm incredibly surprised there is no simple way to adjust the orientation... how can every mouse manufacturer possibly adjust their hardware to track to everyone's tastes? What about those who need to flip orientation a full 90 or 180 degrees? I only need to adjust mine a few degrees, but I'm sure that need has arisen as well. Anyway, I'm running the latest SetPoint drivers (6.00) on Windows 7 and there are no orientation options available. I've checked out uberOptions and the M705 isn't supported yet (with the last version update over 6 months ago). MAF Mouse instructions are a very strange series of mouse clicks to activate. This app also seems a little overkill and costs $$ (which I'm willing to pay as a last resort). Is there no universal registry value for mouse orientation? How about for SetPoint drivers specifically? I've done a simple search in regedit without any luck. An XML file somewhere? Anything?

• Step by step instructions to make dos "see" and "access" usb hard drives

  I am stuck with an USB external hard drive (Maxtor 1 Touch) 750GB that crashed. I have photos and home movies (my son's birth, first birthday etc) that are very important to me. I am given to understand that Spinrite is a very good tool to use, but It does not come "with out of the box" capabilities to access USB drives. If I open the case to get the HDD out from my External HDD, I would compromise the warrenty and I would not be able to exchange the Drive. I have done a bit of research and have the drivers that could help. But the bit I am missing is, How to put it all together. I would really appreciate it if some one can give me step by step instruction where I can create a dos boot cd that can load the drivers and assign a drive letter to it so that I can make Dos "See" the external hard drive. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop that runs Windows XP (Home). It does not have a floppy drive. I will be greatful to your help in the regard.

• PCI Tv Tuner not receiving signal

  I inherited an Angel II PCI Dual TV Tuner card, popped it into my computer's PCI slot, plugged in my coax cable, but am having trouble getting any type of signal to it. The computer I am using is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, I know the card works because the computer recognizes it and installs the drivers, or at least I assume it works because of that. I'm trying to use Windows Media Center to watch/record tv. Here are a few things I have tried to get it working: Uninstalled/Reinstalled the newest drivers Tried hooking up an antenna to the coax input instead of my cable Instead of using cable splitter, went directly from wall output into card with coax cable Tried using different output on splitter in case the out port was bad I haven't tried a different coax cable yet, it should be fine since it's pretty new. Since this is my first time setting up a TV Tuner card, is there anything specific that I need to do with it? Is there any configuration that needs to be done on it? Do I need to have a digial receiver? I was getting pretty frustrated with it so I wanted to turn here to the experts, I'm sure someone can help me figure it out.

• Connecting to Server 2008 shares fails

  I'm having problems getting a reliable share working on an x64 Server 2008 R1 SP1 server. All works well after a reboot, but after some time (within a day) the shares become unavailable to XP and Server 2003 servers. Interestingly, they remain available to other Server 2008 servers. On trying to access \\server\share, Server 2003 returns immediately and simply gives me the message "The specified network name is no longer available", XP takes a minute or two to timeout before giving the same message. There doesn't seem to be anything in the event logs indicating a problem. Doing some googling over the last day or two I've seen the following blamed: Bad network drivers ... I've updated to the latest drivers with no result Symantec anti-virus ... we're not using it (currently no AV on the server) Receive window auto-tuning ... I've disabled with netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled and netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled None of these have had an effect. Windows Firewall is currently disabled. As other Server 2008 boxes (both x32 and x64) can connect, I can only assume that there's some new security configuration that's not quite right - or there's an AD issue that I need to trace, but don't know where to start. Even if anyone doesn't know how to resolve, if someone knows what I need to look for with Wireshark this would be a help.

• Slow upload, fast download on Windows 7 64bit system

  I've got a weird problem in the download speeds on my desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) are consistently fast (approx. 400kB/s) but uploads are very slow (around 6-10kB/s). This has been going on for the last 3 weeks or so. I am a very competent user and troubleshooter, and have searched online for 2 weeks for a solution, to no avail. Part of the problem is that internet is provided by WiFi by my landlord and I have no access to the router (BT Home Hub router) although I know for sure he wouldn't have the first idea on how to restrict my usage :) (rules that out) Anyway, I've tried: - various drivers (my Wifi 'card' is TP-link TL-WN851N, and I've tried TP-link + Atheros + Qualcomm Atheross drivers, suggested by Microsoft) - various tweaks to network parameters (e.g. as suggested by SpeedOptimser) - various tweaks to Windows 7 services (e.g. disabling/manual-ing unecessary services) - raising and lowering head onto a reasonably firm surface at moderate frequency (jk :D) None of the above have helped, and I'm officialy asking for help now!! • Are there any tools to migrate your files, applications, and settings to a new Windows computer?

  I've decided to upgrade my laptop on a regular basis and one of my main concerns is recreating my entire Windows 7 environment every time I do this. I'm talking toolbar positions, login settings, start menu items, applications and all their customizations... everything but my drivers. It literally takes weeks to fully recreate my working environment, not to mention the risk of user error or just simply forgetting "how I liked it." I'm assuming I won't find something as painless as Apple's Migration Assistant for Windows, but maybe there's something out there that can at least package up your apps and their settings? Bonus points if you can point it to your personal files, too - whatever's the quickest way to get from one machine to the next. I intend to install Windows fresh to remove bloatware on every machine that I buy, then selectively install the drivers I need. Something that accommodates loading my old apps into this newly prepared environment would be ideal. One random point of concern is in regard to application settings that refer to old hardware. I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done about this. If you have any thoughts, feel free to share. Thanks for your help!

• Rescue system running TFS that BSODs, into vmware esxi

  Hi, After moving to new facilities, one of our old Dell servers running Windows Server 2003 R2 on PowerEdge 2650 HW BSODs with 0x8e. The server runs Team Foundation Server, so we have a few guys dependent on it. No one here knows TFS, so we have no idea how difficult it would be to setup from scratch. We have the MSSQL database(s) backed up, recent and fresh copy. Tried removing/refitting memory modules, but with no success. The system boots into safe mode but hangs occasionally. I booted a linux livecd and did a dd of both c: and d:, so I have all the data in compressed images on a vmware machine. For the guest, I created a 38G (actually it became 40GB) partition to act as C:, and booted a live cd. I then uncompressed the compressed disk image of c: and dd'd it to the new c: using 'gunzip -dc c.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sda1 bs=1M'. The operation ran for about 1000 seconds, and completed successfully. I assumed it would at least try to boot windows (but most likely BSOD due to not having correct drivers), but the Vmware ESXi guest does not seem to recognize it as a bootable disk. We don't have the vmware enterprise license, so the vmware converter cold cloning is not an option. Did I do something wrong in my dd's etc with the ISOs, or why would it not (try to) boot? Am I wasting my time? What other approach is there? Will continue to try to remove services and drivers to make the physical machine at least work reasonably well in safe mode. What do you suggest? 1. Continue to get the dd'd images to the virtual disk and get it to boot. 2. Install a new windows server, get team foundation server and restore from backup. 3. Focus on the old problematic hardware Any help appreciated
