  • SQL SERVER – Rename Columnname or Tablename – SQL in Sixty Seconds #032 – Video

    - by pinaldave
We all make mistakes at some point of time and we all change our opinion. There are quite a lot of people in the world who have changed their name after they have grown up. Some corrected their parent’s mistake and some create new mistake. Well, databases are not protected from such incidents. There are many reasons why developers may want to change the name of the column or table after it was initially created. The goal of this video is not to dwell on the reasons but to learn how we can rename the column and table. Earlier I have written the article on this subject over here: SQL SERVER – How to Rename a Column Name or Table Name. I have revised the same article over here and created this video. There is one very important point to remember that by changing the column name or table name one creates the possibility of errors in the application the columns and tables are used. When any column or table name is changed, the developer should go through every place in the code base, ad-hoc queries, stored procedures, views and any other place where there are possibility of their usage and change them to the new name. If this is one followed up religiously there are quite a lot of changes that application will stop working due to this name change.  One has to remember that changing column name does not change the name of the indexes, constraints etc and they will continue to reference the old name. Though this will not stop the show but will create visual un-comfort as well confusion in many cases. Here is my question back to you – have you changed ever column name or table name in production database (after project going live)? If yes, what was the scenario and need of doing it. After all it is just a name. Let me know what you think of this video. Here is the updated script. USE tempdb GO CREATE TABLE TestTable (ID INT, OldName VARCHAR(20)) GO INSERT INTO TestTable VALUES (1, 'First') GO -- Check the Tabledata SELECT * FROM TestTable GO -- Rename the ColumnName sp_RENAME 'TestTable.OldName', 'NewName', 'Column' GO -- Check the Tabledata SELECT * FROM TestTable GO -- Rename the TableName sp_RENAME 'TestTable', 'NewTable' GO -- Check the Tabledata - Error SELECT * FROM TestTable GO -- Check the Tabledata - New SELECT * FROM NewTable GO -- Cleanup DROP TABLE NewTable GO Related Tips in SQL in Sixty Seconds: SQL SERVER – How to Rename a Column Name or Table Name What would you like to see in the next SQL in Sixty Seconds video? • Can't remotely connect through SQL Server Management Studio

    - by FAtBalloon
I have setup a SQL Server 2008 Express instance on a dedicated Windows 2008 Server hosted by 1and1.com. I cannot connect remotely to the server through management studio. I have taken the following steps below and am beyond any further ideas. I have researched the site and cannot figure anything else out so please forgive me if I missed something obvious, but I'm going crazy. Here's the lowdown. The SQL Server instance is running and works perfectly when working locally. In SQL Server Management Studio, I have checked the box "Allow Remote Connections to this Server" I have removed any external hardware firewall settings from the 1and1 admin panel Windows firewall on the server has been disabled, but just for kicks I added an inbound rule that allows for all connections on port 1433. In SQL Native Client configuration, TCP/IP is enabled. I also made sure the "IP1" with the server's IP address had a 0 for dynamic port, but I deleted it and added 1433 in the regular TCP Port field. I also set the "IPALL" TCP Port to 1433. In SQL Native Client configuration, SQL Server Browser is also running and I also tried adding an ALIAS in the I restarted SQL server after I set this value. Doing a "netstat -ano" on the server machine returns a TCP 0.0.0.0:1433 LISTENING UDP 0.0.0.0:1434 LISTENING I do a port scan from my local computer and it says that the port is FILTERED instead of LISTENING. I also tried to connect from Management studio on my local machine and it is throwing a connection error. Tried the following server names with SQL Server and Windows Authentication marked in the database security. ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS,1433 ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS ipaddress ipaddress,1433 tcp:ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS tcp:ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS,1433

  • The English Beat's Dave Wakeling Gets Philosophical

    - by Oracle OpenWorld Blog Team
by Karen Shamban We asked Oracle OpenWorld Music Festival performer Dave Wakeling of The English Beat to answer some of our burning questions about what it's like leading the life of a musician. Here are the questions ... and Dave's insightful answers.  Q. What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?A. Being in the moment is the aim for all of life. Q. How do you use technology in creating and delivering your music?A.  We use it behind the art, not instead of it. Q. Do you prefer smaller, intimate venues or larger, louder ones?A. I enjoy 'em all, big and small. Q. What about your fans surprises you?A. Their diversity, decency, and open mindedness. Q. What about your live act surprises your fans?A. That we are as good or even better than they had heard! Q. There are going to be a lot of technical people (you could call them geeks) in the Oracle crowd - what are they going to love about your performance?A. Geeks all have an inner diva, sometimes suppressed until they start to dance at one of our shows! Q. What's new and different in the music you're making today, versus a year or two ago?A. No difference. Only connect, forget the rest! Q. Have you been on tour recently? If so, what do you like about touring, and what do you dislike?A. Touring Australia at the moment ... I love the 2 hours onstage and get bored by the rules and regulations of the other 22 hours. Q. Ever think about playing another kind of music? If so, what, and why?A. No, my music is only ever a reflection of my soul. Q. What are the top three things people should know about your music?A. Dance, think, then dance some more! Limbic is good for us! • SQL Server v.Next (Denali) : More on contained databases and "contained users"

    - by AaronBertrand
One of the reasons for contained databases (see my previous post ) is to allow for a more seamless transition when moving a database from one server to another. One of the biggest complications in doing so is making sure that all of the logins are in place on the new server. Contained databases help solve this issue by creating a new type of user: a database-level user with a password. I want to stress that this is not the same concept as a user without a login , which serves a completely different...(read more)

  • Looking into ASP.Net MVC 4.0 Mobile Development - part 2

    - by nikolaosk
In this post I will be continuing my discussion on ASP.Net MVC 4.0 mobile development. You can have a look at my first post on the subject here . Make sure you read it and understand it well before you move one reading the remaining of this post. I will not be writing any code in this post. I will try to explain a few concepts related to the MVC 4.0 mobile functionality. In this post I will be looking into the Browser Overriding feature in ASP.Net MVC 4.0. By that I mean that we override the user agent for a given user session. This is very useful feature for people who visit a site through a device and they experience the mobile version of the site, but what they really want is the option to be able to switch to the desktop view. "Why they might want to do that?", you might wonder.Well first of all the users of our ASP.Net MVC 4.0 application will appreciate that they have the option to switch views while some others will think that they will enjoy more the contents of our website with the "desktop view" since the mobile device they view our site has a quite large display.  Obviously this is only one site. These are just different views that are rendered. To put it simply, browser overriding lets our application treat requests as if they were coming from a different browser rather than the one they are actually from. In order to do that programmatically we must have a look at the System.Web.WebPages namespace and the classes in it. Most specifically the class BrowserHelpers. Have a look at the picture below   In this class we see some extension methods for HttpContext class. These methods are called extensions-helpers methods and we use them to switch to one browser from another thus overriding the current/actual browser. These APIs have effect on layout, views and partial views and will not affect any other ASP.Net Request.Browser related functionality. The overridden browser is stored in a cookie. Let me explain what some of these methods do. SetOverriddenBrowser() -  let us set the user agent string to specific value GetOverriddenBrowser() -  let us get the overridden value ClearOverriddenBrowser() -  let us remove any overridden user agent for the current request   To recap, in our ASP.Net MVC 4.0 applications when our application is viewed in our mobile devices, we can have a link like "Desktop View" for all those who desperately want to see the site with in full desktop-browser version. We then can specify a browser type override. My controller class (snippet of code) that is responsible for handling the switching could be something like that. public class SwitchViewController : Controller{ public RedirectResult SwitchView(bool mobile, string returnUrl){if (Request.Browser.IsMobileDevice == mobile)HttpContext.ClearOverriddenBrowser();elseHttpContext.SetOverriddenBrowser(mobile ? BrowserOverride.Mobile : BrowserOverride.Desktop);return Redirect(returnUrl);}} Hope it helps!!!!

  • Using VS12 to create and manage an Azure-SQL DB (simple tasks)

    - by Konrad Viltersten
On occasion, I'm in a project where I need to store some information in an external DB. Usually, I create one in Azure and run some scripts that I adapt (the usual create table, create login etc.). It just struck me that there might (and definitely should) be a tool in VS that allows me to create a project for my DB, pull out some boxes to create a model of a DB schema, execute a script or two on it (possibly virtual or temporary) and then somehow push it up the cloud. Haven't found such a tool. Is there one and how do I get to it? NB. I'm not looking for an optimized or well structured schema (that's what the DB pros are for at a later stage). I'm not a DB guy nor do I aspire to become one (too old, hehe). I'll probably be satisfied with a Q&D approach.

  • Java Champion Jim Weaver on JavaFX

    - by Janice J. Heiss
Hardly anyone knows more about JavaFX than Java Champion and Oracle’s JavaFX Evangelist, Jim Weaver, who will be leading two Hands on Labs on aspects of JavaFX at this year’s JavaOne: HOL11265 – “Playing to the Strengths of JavaFX and HTML5” (With Jeff Klamer - App Designer, Jeff Klamer Design) Wednesday, Oct 3, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Hilton San Francisco - Franciscan A/B/C/D HOL3058 – “Custom JavaFX Controls” (With Gerrit Grunwald, Senior Software Engineer, Canoo Engineering AG; Bob Larsen, Consultant, Larsen Consulting; and Peter Vašenda, Software Engineer, Oracle) Tuesday, Oct 2, 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM - Hilton San Francisco - Franciscan A/B/C/D I caught up with Jim at JavaOne to ask him for a current snapshot of JavaFX. “In my opinion,” observed Weaver, “the most important thing happening with JavaFX is the ongoing improvement to rich-client Java application deployment. For example, JavaFX packaging tools now provide built-in support for self-contained application packages. A package may optionally contain the Java Runtime, and be distributed with a native installer (e.g., a DMG or EXE). This makes it easy for users to install JavaFX apps on their client machines, perhaps obtaining the apps from the Mac App Store, for example. Igor Nekrestyanov and Nancy Hildebrandt have written a comprehensive guide to JavaFX application deployment, the following section of which covers Self-Contained Application Packaging: http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/deployment/self-contained-packaging.htm#BCGIBBCI.“Igor also wrote a blog post titled, "7u10: JavaFX Packaging Tools Update," that covers improvements introduced so far in Java SE 7 update 10. Here's the URL to the blog post:https://blogs.oracle.com/talkingjavadeployment/entry/packaging_improvements_in_jdk_7”I asked about how the strengths of JavaFX and HTML5 interact and reinforce each other. “They interact and reinforce each other very well. I was about to be amazed at your insight in asking that question, but then recalled that one of my JavaOne sessions is a Hands-on Lab titled ‘Playing to the Strengths of JavaFX and HTML5.’ In that session, we'll cover the JavaFX and HTML5 WebView control, the strengths of each technology, and the various ways that Java and contents of the WebView can interact.”And what is he looking forward to at JavaOne? “I'm personally looking forward to some excellent sessions, and connecting with colleagues and friends that I haven't seen in a while!” Jim Weaver is another good reason to feel good about JavaOne.

  • SQL Server Windows Auth Login sees Domain as untrusted...

    - by Mr Shoubs
I've had someone set up a domain controller on windows 2008 on one server, and sql server 2008 on another. The domain seems to be working fine, I'm logged on as a domain user on both servers, nothing seems to be a problem there. However, when I try to add a domain user/group to SQL Server Security (e.g. clicking ok from the create login screen) it says it can't find it (even though I've used the search to find the correct account in the first place), when I try to logon (even though I haven't added it yet) it says something about the account being part of an untrusted domain instead of saying I don't have permission to log on. Anyone have any ideas on what is set up incorrectly?

  • Geek Bike Ride Sao Paulo

    - by Tori Wieldt
What do you do on sunny Saturday in Sao Paulo when you have several Java enthusiasts, street lanes closed off for bicyclists, new cool Duke jerseys, and some wonderful bike angels to provide a tour through the city? A GEEK BIKE RIDE, of course! The weekend before JavaOne Latin America, the Sao Paulo geek bike ride was held today. We had 20+ riders and a wonderful route that took us from the Bicycle Park to and through downtown. It was a 30Km ride, but our hosts were kind enough to give riders the option to take the subway for part of the trip. Thanks to our wonderful bike angels, the usual rental bike problems like rubbing brakes, dropped chains, and even a flat tire were handled with ease.  The geek bike ride wasn't just for out-of-towners. Loiane Groner, who lives in Sao Paulo said, "I love the Geek Bike Ride! The last time I was in these parts of the city, I think I was five years-old!" A good time was had by all. (My only crash of the day was riding up an escalator with my bike. Luckily, the bikers with me were so busy helping me that no pictures were taken. <phew>) Enjoy this video by Hugo Lavalle You can also view Hugo's pictures. More pictures to come on Stephen Chin's blog.  So, what city is up next?

  • Favorite moments of JavaOne

    - by Tori Wieldt
There are so many events and sessions to attend at JavaOne, it's unfair to ask people to choose just one thing they liked, but here are some favorite moments: I loved meeting many open source contributors and friends I have not met in person before and seeing that projects like e.g. Hudson are alive and kicking and have a great future ahead of them. -Manfred Moser My "The Problem with Women" session. It had LOADS of interactivity from the audience, who really helped to make that session.  I came out if it with a real sense of optimism - we love our jobs, we love what we do, and we should be proud of telling everyone about it to attract different talent into the industry. (Read her blog JavaOne: The Problem With Women - A Technical Approach for details.) -Trish Gee My kudos to Oracle for making the presentation materials quickly available to the public. Some of them were already available during JavaOne. Lots of slide decks are already there, and in some cases you may even find the video recordings too. Go to http://www.oracle.com/javaone and select JavaOne Technical Sessions.  -Yakov Fain I loved that not only was James Gosling present at the Community Keynote (which felt more like the keynotes of old times [big space, big screens, fun and tech]) but he was also found wandering the halls of the Hilton the day prior. Bring back James! Add back the toys section in the Community Keynote. Let the t-shirt tossing begin anew. These are "small" things that really fire up the community. -Andres Almiray Seeing James Gosling at JavaOne was a real shot in the arm for Java.  He needs to be there every year. -Frank Greco +42 on having James and the T-shirt tossing. -Stephan Janssen The session "Integrate Java with Robots, Home Automation, Musical Instruments, and Kinect." Fabiane Nardon explained connecting Jenkins to jHome to a truck horn placed in their sysadmin's bedroom. She dubbed it "extreme feedback."  -Tori Wieldt The User Group Forum [on Sunday] was a success! Congratulations Bruno Souza and John Yeary and everybody that were involved. I believe it really helps to increase community participation! There were lots of interesting talks, and great discussion with JUG leaders and members. Thank you Oracle for supporting that! -Yara Senger What was your favorite moment? Please comment!

This page also contains the VisualState for Snapped view, so you don’t have to handle it in code. When you choose to add a basic page to an empty solution, you’ll get a prompt like below. • Duke at JavaOne

    - by Tori Wieldt
A living, life-size Duke is a popular feature at every JavaOne developer conference.  One of the highlights for attendees is to meet Duke "in person" and get their picture taken. It's fun to show to your friends...and try to explain why you are standing next to a tooth.* While Duke refused any interviews, I found a slip of paper stuck to Duke's foot. If you wonder why I give 100%,The community deserves no less.Neither JavaOne.They both deserve the best! So much of the world we enjoy today, and the places we're sure to advanceis due to engineering brillianceand gives our species that chance. So when I dance and give it my allas Duke, to rally some cheer, the honor and the privilegemakes me smile, ear to ear. *Duke was designed to represent a "software agent" that performed tasks for the user. In 2006, Duke was officially open sourced under a BSD license. Developers and designers can play around with Duke and have access to Duke’s graphical specifications through a java.net project at http://duke.kenai.com. JavaOne attendees can find Duke in the Zone all week.
