• P4 vs. i3/i5 *T in power consumption and performance [migrated]

  I am running an Intel P4 prescott with HT on my home server (linux file server on encrypted disks on software-RAID5 and virtualisation host for three further machines). The performance for this purpose is really okay. When the system is idle it consumes about 140W power. I am considering buying a new mainboard for an e.g. Intel i3-2100T or an Intel i5-2390T. Both are low power CPUs with a TDP about 40W. Has anyone experiences how much power a recent mainboard with one of these CPUs an 3-4 'green-energy' disks (6W each) consumes? Do I get underneath the 100W threshold? What's about the performance of these low power CPUs? Are they comparable to an Intel P4 with HT? regards, walter

For that I'm looking for the easiest way of writing messages which then get syndicated as RSS feed. Something like a mini blog tool. The simpler the better. • Information System for an Academic Institution

The team currently undertaking the task is designing a centralized system with the intent of providing most (if not all) services of the institution electronically. Most of us are academicians with little practical experience. The questions we need answers for are What are the systems (preferably free, as in Beer, and/or open) and best-practices in use in other academic institutions? What are the experiences of people administering academic ICT systems? What are the overheads of attempting to provide services through an intranet cloud (like UEC) for us (a medium-sized academic institution, in a third-world country)? • Will Vimperator always be this awesome?

  About a week ago I started using Vim, and fell completely in love with it. However, today I installed the Vimperator extension on Firefox, and through there are some problems (all of which will be solved after using it until I get used to it), I found it great. However, I'm still in the "Holy fuck this is totally awesome" phase of software testing, and in some time will go back to the "I have this thing" phase. Just to be sure, will it be a good idea to use it regularly? I want to hear experiences about users and ex-users.

• Migrate Sql Server 2000. Which is better, 2005 vs 2008?

  My company has a Server with Windows Server 2003, and SQL Server 2000. We are planning to migrate just the database server, a provider said us the migration would be better to 2005 first, and then to 2008, because "the SQL Server 2008 is best suited for Windows Server 2008". Which are the pros and cons of each of these approaches? Migrate SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 and then to SQL 2008 Migrate SQL 2000 directly to SQL 2008 NOTE: Changing Operating System is not an option ($$$) right now for the company. • Is it safe to delete "Account Unknown" entries from Windows ACLs in a domain environment?

  It's not uncommon to see entries in Windows ACLs (NTFS files/folders, registry, AD objects, etc.) with the name "Account Unknown (SID)". Obviously these are because of old AD users or groups which at some point had permissions manually configured on the relevant object and have since been deleted. Does anyone know if it is safe to remove these "Account Unknown" ACEs? My gut feeling is that it should be just fine, but I'm wondering if anyone has any past experiences where doing this has caused trouble? Normally I just ignore these, but the company I'm working at now seems to have an abnormal number of these, most likely due to past admins' inexperience with AD/Windows and assigning permissions to user accounts rather than groups in all sorts of weird places. FWIW, our environment is not complex, a single domain forest, 4 DCs in 3 sites, with all network connectivity and replication healthy, so I'm certain that these "Account Unknown" entries are really old accounts, and not just because of some failure to resolve the SID to a human-readable name.

• Dell EqualLogic vs. EMC VNXe [closed]

  We've been looking into SMB SANs and based on the competitive pricing I've been getting we're really liking these two array's. There are some pro's to both solutions, but I've unable to really decide which to choose. The EMC offers better expandability since you can buy an additional shelf (roughly $1200) and can add drives then to the array. However, the Dell unit is still very nice. Can anyone comment on their experiences with the two and thoughts on this? Also, to get the VMware Storage API support you need VMware Enterprise. How much additional performance does this provide? It's roughly $15k more than the Essentials Plus bundle we're looking at (this is a small environment [3 Hosts 1 Array].

• What are some good methods to improve personal password management?

  I want to improve my personal password management. I usually use secure passwords, but overuse them for too many different places. My questions: What methods do you use to create passwords, e.g. for different online sites/logins? What methods do you use to remember those passwords? Memory? Pen&Paper? Software storage? Is there some good way to store my passwords somewhere, so I can always have access to them when I need them (e.g. a webbased solution on my own server) but at the same way keep them away from unwanted access? • Running NginX (with Apache) and cPanel/WHM

  I was wondering if its a good idea to be running NginX as the webserver (on port 80) and Apache as the reverse proxy (on port 8080) with cPanel/WHM being used as a control panel? I also installed Nginx Admin so the configuration for NginX is managed by WHM. The reason I am asking is because I came across an article (http://kbeezie.com/view/apache-with-nginx/) which explains how to setup Apache as a reverse proxy but it states If you are using a control panel based hosting such as cpanel/whm, this method is not advised. Most of the servers configuration is handled automatically in those cases, and making manual changes will likely lead to problems (plus you won’t get support from the control panel makers or your hosting provider in most cases). Anyone have any past experiences with this and can say if its good/bad idea?

• What happens with the Guest OS's on ESXi in the event of a power failure?

  Many small businesses would prefer to let their server drop on power failure than to pay even $100 for a cheap UPS. It's often difficult to convince them of the value of something like that; it's why they like ESXi. It's free, they can save a lot of cash by putting a bunch of linux servers on one machine, and then I get paid. :) If the ESXi server experiences a power outage, it is set to come back on automatically when power is restored. What happens with the guest OS's? Ideally I would like them to all come online again as well, assuming they were on when power was lost, but I see no option for choosing this. I don't want to yank power to the system just to try it out, of course. I'm sure someone knows what happens by default, and perhaps how to make my system to work as I would wish.

• Is vSphere's Data Recover appliance 'production-ready'?

  I have a smallish lab environment (16 x ESX4iU1 hosts and VC4U1) that I periodically want to backup. Normally in production we snap to secondary SAN boxes then have disk-based VTL backups via NetBackup which eventually migrate to off-site removable disks but this seems like an overkill for my own kit. I've spent a bit of time with vSphere's 'Data Recovery' appliance, it was easy enough to setup and I've not really ran into any issues with it but that doesn't mean I trust it fully. Have you had any experiences with it, positive or negative that would help me decide whether to trust it or pay Symantec for more licences? Thank you in advance.

• Virtual environment firewall with CSF + iptables rules on VM?

  We are getting into virtualization with a Proxmox VE (OpenVZ + KVM) server. Our plan for firewall is to have CSF (http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html) running on the host machine as we've had a reasonable good experience with it in the past. Apart from that we plan simple firewall rules on the VM machines (mostly OpenVZ containers with same kernel) and maybe fail2ban simple specific rules. I would appreciate comments with anyone with similar experiences? I understand all traffic comes via the host machine so a combined firewall there with specific firewalling on the VM should work, alltough some iptables rules are hard to get to work on OpenVZ containers.

• Modern open source NIDS/HIDS and consoles?

  Years back we set up an IDS solution by placing a tap in front of our exterior firewall, piping all the traffic on our DS1 through an IDS box and then sending the results off to a logging server running ACiD. This was around 2005-ish. I've been asked to revamp the solution and expand on it and looking around, I see that the last release of ACiD was from 2003 and I can't seem to find anything else that seems even remotely up-to-date. While these things may be feature complete, I worry about library conflicts, etc. Can anyone give me suggestions for a Linux/OpenBSD based solution using somewhat modern tools? Just to be clear, I know that Snort is still actively developed. I guess I'm more in the market for a modern open-source web console to consolidate the data. Of course if people have great experiences with IDS' other than Snort I'm happy to hear about it.

• Performance improvements of VBulletin by integrating the plugins

  I have amassed quite a lot of plugins and code that is being hooked into VBulletin's plugin system. There are good uses for this system. But since I am now locked in with the VB 3 branch and it is no longer updated, I wonder what kind of performance improvements I would see if I integrated all the plugins into the vbulletin files and turned the plugin system completely off. My site has about 1.5 mio posts, about 100,000 threads, 100,000 members (of which 10,000 are "active"). I estimate I have about 200 plugins from different products in the plugin manager. Has anybody ever tried this move and could share the experiences?

• How to get started setting up IP security cameras

  I have just finished renovating my house. As part of the job, I have cat6 cable run through the house, including two external plugs. All cables terminate in the same location. My rough plan is to plug two IP cameras to monitor the front and rear, run POE from a central router to the two external cameras, plug my PC into the same router and run magic software X. Any machine plugged into the router or wirelessly connection should then be able to get a live feed and alerts based on motion detection. That's the plan, but I'm not sure how possible it is. What hardware to get and what monitoring software to get. Has anyone does something similar? What were your experiences?

  I personally use it on both Windows and Linux, but have MS Office installed at work. I understand that in some business situations there are thousands (upon thousands) of existing MS Office documents that may or may not convert cleanly to Open Office. Not everyone is in that situation though. Among non IT folk, I rarely see OOo. Why is this so? What are common reasons for people not using OpenOffice.org? Are they from before it is even tried, or is it from unsatisfactory experiences when actually using it?

  I've heard that MariaDB has better performance than MySQL-Server. I'm running software that makes an intensive use of MySQL, thats why I want to try upgrading to MariaDB. Please tell me your experiences doing this conversion, and instructions or tips. Also, which files I should take care of for making a backup of MySQL-Server, so if something goes wrong with MariaDB, I could rollback to MySQL without issues? • How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. • Scalable WordPress Host for High-Volume Site?

  I need recommendations for a scalable web host for a high volume WordPress web site. For my purposes, high-volume might be 100K-500K visitors/hour. Might think towards a 1M/hour burst rate as a "high water mark." I know WP isn't the highest-performing platform out there (ha!), but it's non-negotiable. I can do "the usual optimizations" (e.g. put static files in a CDN, run and follow the advice of performance analyzers like YSlow, etc). But it will still be WordPress, and there will be a dozen or so plugins involved. So, where to host the site? Most "what's the best WordPress host?" discussions seem to focus on lowest-cost. I need the opposite. What are the high-volume, scalable, or clustered WordPress hosts with which you've had great experiences?

• Fastest web server for serving static content

  Hello, I'm optimizing our system for some faster static content delivery, and was wondering if anyone has any proper experience with the fastest web servers out there for such a purpose. From the three main candidates I've considered, Nginx, Cherokee and Lighttpd, each seems to have its own problems - but the reports I've read online are somewhat biased and lean towards whichever server the user is currently using. Any ideas on where to see a proper benchmark for this specific purpose, or at least a non-biased list of pros and cons? Any personal experiences and pitfalls I should be vary of? • Firewall Deep Inspection Updates and Antivirus Subscription, worth it?

  I realize that this is a subjective question, but I'm trying to get some experiences We have Juniper firewalls in our organization (SSG-320M, SSG-5, and some old NS-5GT). We have the option of a yearly subscription for: Deep Inspection Signature Updates Juniper-Kaspersky Antivirus I seem similar services available from other Firewall vendors. We have Symantec Endpoint Protection deployed to all workstations and servers, plus a dedicated appliance for e-mail spam/virus filtering. So, I'm not sure what these firewall-base services will bring to the table that I don't already have. I would appreciate some feedback from people using these firewall services (Juniper or otherwise). Are these services generally worth it? Do they really catch anything? Do they interfere with normal traffic (false positives)?

• Folders disappear every timeWindows XP starts up

  Whenever my Windows XP machine starts up, subfolders disappear from the first top-level folder, listed alphabetically (eg. from "C:\AA Backups"). The first time it happened I suspected user error (such as an unintentional delete or copy). But I then found it happens on every start-up, sometimes affecting huge numbers of files. Renaming the affected folder (eg to "ZZ Backups") just means that a different folder is affected the next time. Avast found no virus or malware that would seem to be responsible. The missing files are not visible to an undelete utility such as NTFSUndelete. Running "chkdsk/f" found no problems and did not fix the problem. File permissions also appear corrupted - a few files which should be accessible are missing "read" permission. What's happened to this machine?? Any ideas or reports of similar experiences would be most welcome.

• Anyone have any experience with bargain laptop batteries?

  I've got an oldish D820 that's got a 100% dead battery. I know that I could, in theory, take it apart and replace bad cells in the battery. I'm not really comfortable with doing that. I also know that there are various places that sell replacement batteries for 20% to 80% of the cost that Dell would charge. Does anyone have any experiences with buying more than a couple of these off-brand batteries? If a battery goes boom, it could be really ugly, so I'd rather not risk it, but at the same time, the dell batteries are really expensive... Any opinions on these ebay / off-brand battery vendors? Thanks!
