Not creating the class I think I am? Not passing it the type I think I am?

  I have a class with a fields called "a". In the class I have a method and in the list of arguments of this method I also have "a". So, which "a" I will see inside of the method? Will it be the field or it will be the argument of the method? public class myClass { private String a; // Method which sets the value of the field "a". public void setA(String a) { a = a; } } By the way, there is a similar situation. A method has some local (for method) variables whose names coincide with the names of the fields. What will the "see" the method if I refer to such a method-local variable inside the method (the field or the local variable)?

  I have two views that I am loading, the first is a view with an MKMapView, the second has a table view. I would like to access a method in the first views controller, from the second view. I have been told to use the delegate for this, but I can't get it right. In my app delegate, I have set up added properties for the class of my first view. Then, in my second view, I try to access the first view using the delegate: MyAppDelegate *mainDelegate = (MyAppDelegate*) [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; Then try: [mainDelegate.mapViewControllerClass myMethodToRun]; It seems to me that it should be calling the myMethodToRun method, which is in my map view. But, it does not work. What is wrong with what I am doing here? There must be a way to access a method of another view...

  We're adding a new method 'delete_stuff' to the WidgetsController of a scaffolded app. in routes we added match 'widget/delete_stuff/:id' = 'widgets#delete_stuff' I CAN manually create html (GET) links like <a href="/widget/delete_stuff/<% widget.id %>">My Custom Delete Stuff</a> But that's bad on so many levels (uses GET instead of DELETE, doesn't permit a CONFIRM dialog, isnt DRY, etc) Problem is I can't figure out how to use the url helpers for a custom method... trying to do something like this: <% link_to 'DeleteStuff', @widget, :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :method => :delete %> But that just gets ignored when the html is rendered. I'm clearly missing something fundamental on how to use link_to, any help will be appreciated! Cheers, JP

  Hi all, Here is my problem, I have a class which have a object who throw an event and in this event I throw a custom event from my class. But unfortunately the original object throw the event from another thread and so my event is also throw on another thread. This cause a exception when my custom event try to access from controls.   I'm attempting a few simple calculations in a def clean method following validation (basically spitting out a euro conversion of retrieved uk product price on the fly). I keep getting a TypeError. I guess when implementing static synchronized method, a lock belongs to Class object is used so that multiple static synchronized methods may degrade performance of the system. Am I right? or JVM use other mechanism to implement static synchronized method? What's the best practice if I have to implement multiple static synchronized methods in a class? Thank you all!   Is it possible to tell JUnit 3 to use additional method name prefix when looking up test method names? The goal is to have additional tests running locally that should not be run on continuous integration server. CI server doesn't use test suites, it look up for all classes which name ends with "Test" and execute all methods that begins with "test". The goal is to be able to locally run not only tests run by integration server, but also tests which method name starts with, for example "nocitest" or something like that. I don't mind having to organize tests into tests suite locally, since CI is just ignoring them.

Have you ever designed a method-callback pattern (something like a "pointer" to a class method) in C++ and, if so, how did you do it ? I know a method is just a regular function with some hidden this parameter to serve as a context and I have a pretty simple design in mind.   Just trying to create a simple method that counts up 1 on the tally when the button is pressed. My knowledge is extremely limited and I am pretty sure that my problem is somewhere in the method implementation: -(IBAction) updateTally:(id) sender { NSString *text; int total = 0; total = total + 1; text=[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat: @"%i", total]; lblTally.text = text; } I have done the necessary interface declarations for the lblTally UILabel and the updateTally method. I suspect that there is some sort of an NSString/int/%i/%@ mixup that I am making but I'm not sure how to fix it. When I run the program as it currently is it displays a 0 in the lblTally label field on the iphone. When I press the button it then displays a 1 in that field. However, if I continue to press the button - nothing happens.

  Hi, I am looking to write a plugin controller in Cocoa that loads bundles, and exposes a specific set of methods for the plugins to call. My question is this: is it possible to know (any) info about the object that called a method in the controller. When an instantiated plugin calls a method in my plugin controller, I would like to know which of the plugin instances called the method, without having to rely on the plugin sending a pointer to itself as a parameter (I could always validate the pointer they send, but I want to keep the API methods as simple as possible). There may be no perfect solution (and there are simple workarounds), but it's always good to learn some new tricks if possible (or the reasons why it's impossible). Thanks in advance.

  If I have a program that does the following: if(input=='abc'){do x} if(input=='def'){do y} In the future, I may want to add another piece of code like so: if(input=='ghy'){do x} As you can see, I am adding a new 'if' statement for a different conditional BUT using the SAME function X. The code in future has potential to have lots of different IF statements (or switches) all of which are comparing a string vs a string and then performing a function. Considering the future expansion, I was wondering if there is a possible 'neater', 'modular' way of achieving the same results. It's a shame I can't combine the String with a Method call in a hashtable (String, method) in Java. That way I could just store any new procedures inside a hashtable and grab the relevant method for that String. Any ideas? Thank you
