• Oracle SOA Suite, the Most Capable Tool for Every Possible Integration Challenge

  session ID: CON8601 - when: Monday, Oct. 1, 10:45am-11:45am - where: Moscone South 102 "Oracle SOA Suite, the Most Capable Tool for Every Possible Integration Challenge" is the name of the session I will be delivering at Oracle OpenWorld this year. I'm usually going for more subdued titles but decided to remove the gloves this year, at the risk of sounding arrogant! While we have a number of worthy competitors in various areas of integration no one can really compete with the breadth and reliability of Oracle SOA Suite. This session is primarily intended for people who are not yet familiar with Oracle SOA Suite (i.e. if you are an existing customer your time might be better spent at some of the other sessions we have on the topic). I will provide an overview of Oracle SOA Suite, the customers using it and the types of challenges they are solving with it: from integrating Oracle Applications (E-Business Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft, RightNow, Taleo etc.) to third-party applications (did you know that over a third of our customers actually use us to integrate SAP?), mainframes and a variety of technologies. We will talk about some emerging trends and problems that our users are solving with the product: cloud integration, B2B consolidation and mobile-enablement. I will also briefly touch upon the exciting projects we are doing with Oracle Event Processing, in the domain of "Fast Data" and "Big Data". Last but not least, I will be joined on stage by Venktesh Maudgalya, Director at Electronic Arts. Venktesh will bring his customer perspective and explain how EA leveraged Oracle SOA Suite to implement iHub, the massive integration hub that interconnects all their applications (E-BusinessSuite, Hyperion, Demantra, Peoplesoft, Salesforce.com, Kronos, Teradata, GXS etc.) and carries 3/4 of their revenue flows. • PC On/Off Time Charts Windows Uptime; No Logging Necessary

  Windows: PC On/Off Time is a graphical tool that displays your PC’s uptime, downtime, errors, and more all in a clear and portable package. One of the hassles of using logging tools is that you usually have to enable the logging and then wait for results to pile up before seeing anything useful (such as when you turn on the logging on your router). PC On/Off Time taps right into the event logs your Windows PC is already keeping so you get immediate access to your uptime history. If you look at the screenshot above you can see an accurate picture of the last few weeks of uptime on my computer. October 23-24 I didn’t boot down my PC, the rest of the time I hibernated it overnight when I wasn’t using it, November 1st I installed an SSD (you can see the burst of reboots and short uptimes) and then November 9th there was a brief power outage that caused an unexpected stop (the red arrows on the timeline for the 9th). • Microsoft Discontinuing Windows Home Server

  As part of their ongoing push to simplify their product lineups, Microsoft is discontinuing their popular small office/home server platform Windows Home Server. On to see the new alternative for small volume users. Although, in the context of the simplification push, it shouldn’t seem surprising, many people were in fact surprised by Microsoft’s move to drop the extremely popular and economical WHS platform. Now, instead of dropping $99 on a copy of WHS to build their simple home servers users will find themselves on the first tier of the new Windows Server 2012 pricing ladder: a copy of Essentials for $425. • Star Trail Photos Taken from the International Space Station

  While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure. From now through December 16th, you can take the "Java SE 7 Programmer I" exam (1Z1-803) for only $50 USD. Not only that, but because this only a single-exam certification - passing it puts you among the very first certified on the new Java SE 7 platform! You'll be happy to note that we worked hard to raise the bar for OCA as we built the Java SE 7 certification. The content that we considered to be more ‘conceptual knowledge-based' has been eliminated in the OCA level and has been replaced with far more practical content - what we often call "practitioner-level" concepts and questions. In fact, some of the topics that we previously covered at the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) level is now covered at the OCA level. • Tell Visual Studio 2012 UI Designers What to Fix

  If you hate the default interface themes in Visual Studio 2012 as much as I do, you have another outlet to vent. The UI designers have posted a survey where you can tell them how distracting and annoying you find the gray themes and black icons. You even get to comment on the (fixable) all-caps issue. The UI people didn’t listen much to the (largely hostile) developer feedback during the product design – or more likely were constrained by some edict from on high - but seem more willing now to create decent themes for updates.
