• How to enable raid on Gigabyte G33M-S2L?

  I'd like to set up RAID-1 on my Gigabyte G33M-S2L motherboard and for this reason I purchased two 1T hard drives. According to SiSoft Sandra the motherboard does support RAID but it is disabled. I looked everywhere in BIOS even upgraded it to the most recent version but found nothing that would have said "RAID" and the operating system I wish to install sees the two HDDs, not just a RAIDed one. What could be the problem? Does my motherboard support RAID (as the diagnostic tool claims) or do I need to buy a RAID card?

• How can I make WinXP bind to ports other than 1025-5000 for outgoing TCP connections?

  (I originally posted a similar question on StackOverflow but readers recommended I post here instead) When you create outgoing TCP connections, most applications let the operating system choose which port to use. Most OSes use the IANA recommended dynamic port range of 49152-65535 for this purpose. But in Windows 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft uses ports 1025-5000. Microsoft lets you change the high end of this range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. I need to have port 4160 free for incoming connections and on rare occasions an outgoing connection steals that port from me before I bind that port.

• Force Steam (and other programs that do not specify proxy settings) to use a proxy

  My school requires a proxy for all internet access. If you want to use the internet, it is impossible to not use a proxy. This makes it a problem for many programs that don't seem to let you enter proxy settings. How can I use Steam when I am behind a proxy? Is it possible to somehow enter the details into a configuration file, or force it to get the settings from Internet Explorer? If not, does software exist for creating a 'virtual' network adapter which will pass all traffic (or all protocol x traffic) through the proxy? Although I am facing this specific problem on Windows 7, solutions for all operating systems are welcome.

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • Browsers ignoring hosts file

  Until recently my browsers started to ignore my hosts file. I have Windows 7 operating system installed. 192.168.0.5 livesite.com I have tried: Clearing browser cache Issued "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command line Issued "ping livesite.com" from the command line (response was "Reply from 192.168.0.5: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128") Restarting unit Backing up original hosts file and making a new one Checking lmhosts.sam (everything is commented out) Connecting directly to modem using cable Checked \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath Tried it on another laptop with exactly the specs as I have Then I tried Changing entry to "127.0.0.1 livesite.com" (ping ok, browser ok) Changing entry to "192.168.0.5 livesite.com" (ping ok, browser ok but only for a sec) Issued "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command line (ping ok, browser not ok) Changing entry to "127.0.0.1 livesite.com" (ping ok, browser ok) Changing entry to "192.168.0.5 livesite.com" (ping ok, browser not ok) Issued "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command line (ping ok, browser not ok) Any idea why it worked for a moment? • No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

  (Related : How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications? ) I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Pro (msdnaa) to Windows 8 Pro (msdnaa). The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine). • Want to install OS from USB instead of CD : How to deal with *.img image files?

  I'm on windows. I'm trying DragonflyBSD operating system. as you can see here: http://www.dragonflybsd.org/download/ there are two kinds of images CD (.iso) and USB (.img) files available for download. I downloaded *.iso and using UNetbootin to make a bootable USB stick. But its taking hell lot of time. Its been 2 hours and its just 50% done(9k of 18k files). I'm really pissed off now! I used *.iso because I didn't know how to deal with *.img files. Will it be quick *.img file? How to use it to make bootable USB?

• Which dbghelp.dll do I use for debugging?

  I'm trying to configure symbols in Process Explorer. I have the Windows SDK installed (and thus, Debugging Tools). However, there are two versions of dbghelp.dll -- x86 and x64. Which one do I use? Other sources on the net say to just point to the dbghelp.dll that's in the base directory of the Debugging Tools. But there's no such dbghelp.dll -- they're in their respect 32 and 64 bit folders (i.e., C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\Debuggers\x64). I'm using a Windows 7 x64 operating system, so does that mean I should load the x64 .dll? Or is it a matter of what I'm debugging? If it is a matter of what I'm debugging, does that mean that I have to switch this .dll depending what process I want to get symbol information on in Process Explorer?

I have the key for Windows 7 in a text file. However I don't have the Windows 7 DVD or image. So is there any way of burning off a Windows 7 DVD considering that its the operating system I'm currently using? If not...well I have a W7 key, will this key work with any W7 DVD or is it particular to the W7 image that came with the key?

• Which driver for "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" in a laptop?

  We have some HP laptops here that comes equipped with a video card that identifies itself as "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650", like this one. However, which drivers do we choose? As far as we can tell, HD 3650 is desktop cards, or at least there are no drivers listed for that series with "Mobility" in their name. If I pick the following on the ATI Driver Download page: Graphics Windows Vista 32-bit Edition Mobility Radeon Then the dropdown for the card model contains X300, X600, X700, X800, X1300, X1400, X1600, X1800, 9600, 9700 and 9800 models, but no "HD" nor "36xx series". However, if I change to just "Radeon" for the last selection there, I can find a "Radeon HD 3600 Series" model in the list. Also, if I pick "Windows 7" as the operating system, I can find a "Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series" card, but no 3600. So, which one to pick? The main reason I ask is that they all seem to have some kind of problem installing, so neither seems to be the right one (they all crash with "Catalyst Install Manager has stopped working".)

  Until recently my operating system was XP where for the purpose of development and testing of php and zen cart I set up xampp that included apache http server and mercury mail server I also made changes to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts as follows: 127.0.0.1 www.zen.com # For browser access 127.0.0.1 mail.mercury.com # For email access 127.0.0.1 mercury.com # For mercury mail server This allowed the use of www.zen.com in the address bar of my browser rather than 'localhost' and mail.mercury.com to access email via thunderbird. All was well. Then I installed windows7, I made all the mods and again everything appeared to run as expected.Then I turned off my wireless modem causing all working local connections to fail. Localhost in the address bar still works but not www.zen.com and thunderbird 'cannot find mail.mercury.com' Is there some way to overcome what ever is causing this.

  I'm not entirely sure this is the right place for the is question but I cannot think of another so here goes. In order to login to the windows machines at my office one must press the almighty CTRL-ALT-DELETE command combo first. I, finding this very frustrating, decided to look into why and found claims from both my sys and Microsoft stating that it's a security feature and that "Because only windows could read the CTRL-ALT-DELETE it helped to ensure that an automated program cannot log in. Now I'm not a master of the windows operating system ( as I generally use *nix ) but I cannot believe that "Only windows can send that signal" bull. It just doesn't sit right. Is there a good reason for the CTRL-ALT-DELETE to login thing? is it something I'm missing? or is it another example of antiquated legacy security measures?

  We have a small number of citrix servers that all have office installed. Only a small subset of users have access to office. Everyone is set to open office documents with the free viewers on the Citrix servers. We control access to office through NTFS permissions. We now have a large number of users who need to be able to view office documents from a webpage. Opening office files normally works fine. When users open the office documents from the link in a webpage, it ignores the file associations and attempts to open the document with the full office program. How can I change the program that IE uses to open office documents, or how can I force it to use the file associations I set in the operating system?

• Install Windows 8 from recovery disk on VirtualBox [on hold]

  About 6 months ago, I bought a desktop HP PC with Windows 8 from Costco. I made a recovery disk (actually, took 4 DVDs) of the operating system and copied down the product key. I then did a fresh Cento6 install on the machine. I know wish to operate Windows (8 I guess, but I would rather have 7) on a VirtualBox on the Centos box. Is this possible? Any recommendations where to start? Can I do so without re-installing all the HP baggage?

• Why do msi installations use slower drives over faster ones in windows 7?

  I have noticed that the slowest drive in my system is used most during an msi installation. I mainly notice this when running windows updates but it seems to be msi installs in general. The setup I last saw this occur on was running Windows 7 with the following drives: Sata: 240GB SSD NTFS ~515MB/s Operating system drive 1TB NTFS ~110MB/s Firewire: 4TB ExFAT ~80MB/s I would think that windows would choose the fastest drive with available space for temporary files. But it will instead choose the external drive with the slowest transfer speed. I could also understand choosing the 1TB for not being an ssd in an attempt to preserve the longevity of the ssd write capacity. Why does this happen? Is there a way to force these installations to use the OS drive or a specific drive?

• Copying files within a Workgroup

  I have three boxes operating in a Windows Server workgroup within a closed network. (No Domain / No AD) There are several derivations of the scenario that I'm about to outline, but I'm sure I will be able to retool the solution as and when I need. Essentially the boxes are: 2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard 1 x Windows Server 2000 Standard I need to be able to schedule the copying/and-or/moving of files from various directories and each of the boxes. Each box has a different username and password for the administrator. I have PowerShell 2.0 on the two Win2K8 boxes (obviously). Previously I have used mapped network drives to copy the files, and cmd line batches, but I'd much rather use Powershell if possible (with Shares and/or $ notation). However the Copy-Item cmdlet doesn't seem to be processing the Credential correctly. Perhaps some Powershell gurus out there might be able to help me. Essentially I'd like to schedule a PS run of script to push backup files onto my WIn2k box (old fileserver) periodically.

  Is there a way to prevent Mac OS X creating .DS_Store and other hidden meta-files on foreign volumes like NTFS and FAT? I share an NTFS partition with data like Thunderird & Firefox's profiles and apache's DocumentRoot, between Mac OS X and Windows, which is very handy. I don't mind if Mac OS X is not capable of indexing or otherwise doing the neat things those metafiles are for. Note: It's not shared over a network, both operating systems and the shared partition coexist on the same disk, on the same machine.

I've searched the VMware site and to say it's badly organised is an understatement! I've been able to find general setup guides but nothing with a specific focus on security. Can I still make use of the 32gb SSD? I'm unfamiliar with the efficacy of using an SSD for caching with a 750gb 7200rpm sata 3 drive.   Hi, Im running a decent laptop with 3GB ram and 2GHz Core Duo. I use it mainly for working which requires several SSH and SFTP connections to servers and running a VM most of the time. Nothing much more intensive than that. I like using Ubuntu 9.10 however I have the issue of Nautilus and the top/bottom menus freezing up on me constantly - dare I say it, alot more problems than when I was using Windows Vista. Im just looking for recommendations of other operating systems which would be suitable for the task. Thanks

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My setup is as follows: Intel core i5 750 quad core 2.66mhz 4GB ram asus p55 motherboard radeon hd 5570 video card 650gb 7200rpm western digital sata HDD 23" Nec ea23wmi monitor Operating System: Windows 7 What might be the main bottleneck that needs upgrading to fix my delays? Seems like the hard drive might be the problem but anything faster than 7200rpm is beyond my budget for a decent hard drive. Could it be anything else?

• Disable antialiasing for a specific GDI device context

  I'm using a third party library to render an image to a GDI DC and I need to ensure that any text is rendered without any smoothing/antialiasing so that I can convert the image to a predefined palette with indexed colors. The third party library i'm using for rendering doesn't support this and just renders text as per the current windows settings for font rendering. They've also said that it's unlikely they'll add the ability to switch anti-aliasing off any time soon. The best work around I've found so far is to call the third party library in this way (error handling and prior settings checks ommitted for brevity): private static void SetFontSmoothing(bool enabled) { int pv = 0; SystemParametersInfo(Spi.SetFontSmoothing, enabled ? 1 : 0, ref pv, Spif.None); } // snip Graphics graphics = Graphics.FromImage(bitmap) IntPtr deviceContext = graphics.GetHdc(); SetFontSmoothing(false); thirdPartyComponent.Render(deviceContext); SetFontSmoothing(true); This obviously has a horrible effect on the operating system, other applications flicker from cleartype enabled to disabled and back every time I render the image. So the question is, does anyone know how I can alter the font rendering settings for a specific DC? Even if I could just make the changes process or thread specific instead of affecting the whole operating system, that would be a big step forward! (That would give me the option of farming this rendering out to a separate process- the results are written to disk after rendering anyway) EDIT: I'd like to add that I don't mind if the solution is more complex than just a few API calls. I'd even be happy with a solution that involved hooking system dlls if it was only about a days work. EDIT: Background Information The third-party library renders using a palette of about 70 colors. After the image (which is actually a map tile) is rendered to the DC, I convert each pixel from it's 32-bit color back to it's palette index and store the result as an 8bpp greyscale image. This is uploaded to the video card as a texture. During rendering, I re-apply the palette (also stored as a texture) with a pixel shader executing on the video card. This allows me to switch and fade between different palettes instantaneously instead of needing to regenerate all the required tiles. It takes between 10-60 seconds to generate and upload all the tiles for a typical view of the world. EDIT: Renamed GraphicsDevice to Graphics The class GraphicsDevice in the previous version of this question is actually System.Drawing.Graphics. I had renamed it (using GraphicsDevice = ...) because the code in question is in the namespace MyCompany.Graphics and the compiler wasn't able resolve it properly. EDIT: Success! I even managed to port the PatchIat function below to C# with the help of Marshal.GetFunctionPointerForDelegate. The .NET interop team really did a fantastic job!
