• Why does the task pictogram flashes instead of opening the program?

  Sometimes, when I select a click a program on the Windows 7 taskbar it won't appear (it doesn't gain focus and remains behind other open windows), and the icon will flash and turn orange. This happens reasonably frequently, and I've had it happen on two separate Windows installs on different machines. It just happened now and the only programs I have with active windows are Chrome, WMP and Explorer (2). It happened when I clicked Explorer. Once this has happened to one window, it affects all windows, and the only way I can switch between programs is by finding the window manually or using Windows+Tab. The only way I've come across to get the computer to snap out of this annoying behaviour is to restart the machine. Is there a way of stopping it?   Is there any program or way to make Mac OS X's ?(command)-tab behave like Windows' alt-tab? That is, instead of switching between applications, to switch between windows of all applications. I do know there's a way to switch between windows of the same application, but that's not what I want either. I'm not just trying to make Mac OS X behave like my recent former OS, I've been a Mac user for over two years and before that Ubuntu. After using Expose and ?-tab I think Windows' or Ubuntu's alt-tab is better.

• How can I automatically lower Spotify playback volume when my Video Editing program makes a sound?

  I'd like to listen to Spotify while I am video editing. This is just casual listening - nothing to do with the editing work. How can I automatically fade out the volume of Spotify when my video editing program plays audio? I often need to hear the video editing audio without the distraction of Spotify playing over the top, but the video editing playback is too on/off/on/off to switch Spotify audio manually each time. Without background music, I get really sick of the repeated playback of the audio clips with only silence inbetween. I suppose what I needd is an app that monitors sound output from 'App A' and reduces the sound output from all others (Apps B, C, D, etc) when something is played.

• Why is there no /usr/bin/ in windows? Would it be dangerous to the entire Program Files to the path?

  I am a Linux user spending some time in Windows and I'm trying to understand some of the Windows paradigms instead of fighting them. I notice that each program installed in the traditional manner (i.e. via orgasmic installers: Yes, Yes, Yes, Finish) adds the executables to C:/Program Files/foo/bar.exe and then adds a shortcut to the Desktop / Start Menu containing the entire path. However, there is no common directory with links to the software, i.e. C:/bin/bar.exe which would link to C:/Program Files/foo/bar.exe. Therefore, after installing an application the only way to use the application is via the clicky-clicky menus or by navigating to the executable in the filesystem. One cannot simply Win-R to open the run dialogue and then type bar or bar.exe as is possible with notepad or mspaint. I realize that Windows 8 improves on this with the otherwise horrendous Start Screen which does support typing the name of the app, but again this depends on the app having registered itself for such. Would I be doing any harm by adding C:/Program Files recursively to the Windows path? I do realize that there will be name collisions (i.e. uninstall.exe) but could there be other issues?

  From the powershell prompt, when I try to run a program and feed it a command line option, powershell ends up mangling the option. Why does this happen? Is there any way to stop it besides enclosing the option in quotes? For example, from the powershell prompt: PS Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::\\mach\share .\myprog.exe -file=input.txt myprog.exe ends up getting two arguments: 1) -file=input 2) .txt I need to run it like: .\myprog.exe "-file=input.txt" or .\myprog.exe '-file=input.txt' to force it to be one argument. No other shell does this.

• How to determine what program send the packet recorded in Wireshark?

  I was taking some tutorials on Wireshark in order to analyze the packets sent and received when talking to a web server for purposes of learning. When I start listening/recording packets in Wireshark, there where so many packages being recorded (700 packages per minute). Is it normal to have that much traffic if I have all the programs that will cause traffic such as all browsers, log me in, dropbox, goto meeting, etc., closed? In order to try to solve the problem I am analyzing random packets. Take for instance this filter: I just selected a random IP: 74.125.130.99. So how can I know from what program those packets where created? Also how can I get more info about that communication bwtween my computer (192.168.0.139) and that server (74.125.130.99)? I just selected a random IP from the Wireshark capture. There are also other IPs that I have no idea why they are communicating with my computer. How can I figure that out?

• Is there a program that will show a tree of the differences in two file trees?

  In windows I manually back up from time to time by formatting my external drive and copying the contents of my data partition over. Inevitably there is a difference in the number and size of the files copied because of system files, etc. Is there a program that would diff two directories recursively and compile the differences into a nice GUI tree that I could peruse (preferably filter) to ensure that everything I want made it over to the drive? It should only show files that are not in both directories. (Also, please ignore the inadequacy of my backup solution)

  Some softwares contain tests to see if they are running on a virtual machine. It's very unpleasant to see alert messages such as "Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine." and have your software stopped! There is a lot of legal reasons to override such tests. Moreover such limitations are (most of the time) not written in User License Agreement. So... how to hide a program that is running on a virtual machine? I'm using a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with Hyper-V... I'm administrator of the Operating System (Windows 2003) installed on this VPS, not administrator of Hyper-V.

• Can you remap "C:\Program Files" like you can with "My Documents"?

  I'm not sure if this is possible, but I'm hoping you guys will know one way or the other! I'm going to be reinstalling windows xp, and the primary master IDE is a smaller 10 gig drive. I'm pretty sure that if I tried to install all my programs back onto the C:\ drive that they'd not all fit. Is it possible to get my Program Files directory to point to a partition on one of my larger drives, so I don't end up with some of my programs on C:\ and others on D:\, E:\, etc?

  I'm on a small business network, and rarely we experience really extreme latency. I have no idea what device might be causing the lag, and wanted to know if there was a piece of software that could detect it. I know about some softwares like wireshark, which maybe do what I'm asking? If so it's too complicated to understand. I run the program and I have no idea what I'm looking at, or what parameters to give it. So something that can monitor traffic, as well as describe it in such a way that even a not so network savvy individual can interpret.

  Say i'm coding in emacs and want to start up a music program. Because it takes too long to start up i go back to coding and type away. When the music application starts up, the focus is stolen (gasp! stolen!) away from emacs and goes to the music application, often mid-thought. Is there any way to keep this from happening and have the newly started application not have focus until i see that it's up and ready to be used? Besides getting rid of my ADD of course. Or getting an impossibly fast computer that can keep up with my mind. i'm using a Windows XP system, but i will soon have a Windows 7 system, and i have Linux at home.

  I like playing computer games in windowed mode, as opposed to full screen. I don't like staring at the title bar, frame, and other UI junk. I also don't like seeing other stuff on my desktop around the window. Is there a simple Windows program that will strip the UI chrome off of an arbitrary window from some other application? Extra points for an easy way to put a black screen underneath the window, hiding the desktop. Note: I'm looking specifically to handle windows that are smaller than my desktop size. There's a variety of 'windowed maximized' options that make a window exactly the desktop size, and positioned so all the UI decorations are off screen. (E.g.: ShiftWindow). I'm trying to strip all the decorations away from a window that's smaller than desktop size.

  I would like to run some game on windowed mode, but its hard to see the game when my desktop resolution is huge. One solution could be to change my desktop resolution every time i play the game. But the bad thing is that my screen automatically smoothes the pixels when im using non-native resolutions, and the blurred pixels really makes it ugly and hard to look at. Is there some program to double the pixel size of any opengl/directx window without smoothing the pixels? I've tried multiple magnifying glass programs, but they all seem to make it blurred...

• How do I check if a program can potentially be a virus?

  I am running Windows XP in a VM. I want to download a few applications and install the one by one and check if they potentially can be a virus. I assume virus would need to add something to the startup folder, or the application in the startup section in the registry or add a service. What else might it do to become active? Anyway, how can I check to see if a program may be a virus? I use hijack this to get a list of processes and I simply compare it from before I installed to after and see if there's anything different. Is this good enough? My main OS is Windows 7 but I do not have that in a VM and don't see a reason to test with that.

  Whenever I click a link from something like outlook or a program opens a web page (not when I click a link from within chrome). It opens up in Chrome since it is my default browser but if I already have a page open it will open in a new tab on that same window. I can't tell you how many times I forget about this and close the window out, accidentally losing the other tab too. Ofcourse, I can open a new chrome window and find it under recently closed tabs but I would really just prefer if they opened in their own window so I can prevent this.

• Compiling program that uses libpcap on Mac OSX using iPhone 3.1.1 SDK for use on iPhone

  Hey SOV users, I have a question that I'm hoping some iPhone Developers may be able to help with. I had a look at statically compiling a binary on my Mac and moving it over to the iPhone for execution. I have managed to get this bit of it working by installing the iPhone 3.1.3 SDK on my Mac and setting the architecture to the iPhone in the gcc line as follows; /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc -I ~/Downloads/libpcap-1.1.1/pcap-compiled/ -arch armv6 -isysroot /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk -o test test.c I have managed to successfully compile a "Hello World" C program and executed it on the iPhone with success. e.g. include int main() { printf("Hello, World!\n"); return(0); } This worked a charm. I am also using 'ldid' to sign the application (but only if necessary). Anyways, I have been trying to get a program to compile which uses libpcap (http://www.tcpdump.org/) but with little success. I have downloaded and installed libpcap-1.1.1 on my mac and set the configure --prefix to /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk/usr/local and build the application. I then saw that the includes actually reside in Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk/usr/includes and so moved the Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk/usr/local/include files (which contained only the pcap stuff) to the correct location. I then attempted to compile the test program using; /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc -I /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/include/ -arch armv6 -isysroot /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk -o pcap pcap.c -lpcap This worked a lot better than other tests but produces an error; i.e. ld: library not found for -lcrt1.o collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Do you have any ideas as to how I can do this successfully? I've tried a load of different things but none seem to be successful. Basically, I just want to install (or add) some headers to the existing iPhoneOS SDK for use in compiling programs. Any ideas? • Android "Hello World" tutorial program. Error: [Parse Error] There is a problem parsing the package

  Today I decided to start developing for the Android OS. I went on their website, downloaded all the required software (Eclipse, The Android SDK, ADT Plugin for Eclipse etc.). I followed the "Hello World" tutorial supplied (link text). I have it using the Android SDK 2.1. The program worked almost flawlessly. It runs fine on the Android emulator, but doesn't install on any Android phones. I don't own an Android phone, so I had three of my friends try to install the program on theirs. The phones we used were: ROOTED G1 running 2.1 Droid running 2.1 Another Droid running 2.1 I emailed the .apk to myself in gmail, and accessed it via the Android emulator. It ran and installed the package just fine. However, when my friends tried to install it on their phones, they were all met with this error: "[Parse Error] There is a problem parsing the package" I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what may be wrong. • Is the valid state domain of a program a regular language?

  If you look at the call stack of a program and treat each return pointer as a token, what kind of automata is needed to build a recognizer for the valid states of the program? As a corollary, what kind of automata is needed to build a recognizer for a specific bug state? My thought is that if these form regular languages than some interesting tools could be built around that. E.g. given a set of crash/failure dumps, automatically group them and generate a recognizer to identify new instances of know bugs.

  I am trying to control an InternetExplorer.Application via the COM interface, using Perl, Win32::OLE, and information from MSDN. My goal is to get as good an idea as possible about what IE is doing. (Related to this question.) IE uses events to notify my program when it has finished various stages of processing a certain URL (NavigateComplete2, DownloadComplete DocumentComplete). It can also tell my program about various errors it encounters (NavigateError2). I consider that part of my problem solved well enough. I would also like to be able to reliably detect if IE is redirected by the server. Primarily, I'm concerned about HTTP 30x status codes. Is there a way to do this, either with COM automation or via another route?

• OOP: how much program logic should be encapsulated within related objects/classes as methods?

  I have a simple program which can have an admin user or just a normal user. The program also has two classes: for UserAccount and AdminAccount. The things an admin will need to do (use cases) include Add_Account, Remove_Account, and so on. My question is, should I try to encapsulate these use-cases into the objects? Only someone who is an Admin, logged in with an AdminAccount, should be able to add and remove other accounts. I could have a class-less Sub-procedure that adds new UserAccount objects to the system and is called when an admin presses the 'Add Account' button. Alternatively, I could place that procedure as a method inside the AdminAccount object, and have the button event execute some code like 'Admin.AddUser(name, password).' I'm more inclined to go with the first option, but I'm not sure how far this OO business is supposed to go.
