  Note that this question is mostly so others can find this information. I ran into a problem recently with my Fedora-14 virtual machine running on a Windows-7 host with VirtualBox. VirtualBox could not start the Fedora virtual machine, but it could start a Ubuntu virtual server machine that was configured for 512 MB of RAM. The Fedora-14 machine was configured for 2 GB of RAM. The Fedora-14 machine had been working a week ago. What had I recently changed...? Answer to follow.

  I am creating a service called TorCompute which allows for creating virtual Tor Hidden Service servers on my infrastructure (I say infrastructure, by that I mean just the 3x 32GB RAM machines waiting to be purchased). What I would like to be able to do is for users to log on, access the web interface and spin up a VM with a variable about of RAM/Disk Space. I've written the PHP for logging in and have a nice web interface, just I need the code to actually create them! How would I go about doing this? • Which kind of memory do I need for this laptop?

  I'm trying to upgrade the RAM in my laptop. It has two slots, but only 1 is filled with a 4gb stick, so I am looking for another 4gb to stick in the other slot. It is a HP g6-1d38dx. I found this RAM, 9-9-9-24, but it is 1333mhz. Looks like it says my max bandwith on the stock stick is 800MhZ. • Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze?   Here's the story: Company bought me a $599 Mac mini (as of this writing, 2.26GHz/160GB HD/2GB RAM) I have it set up to some extent with software for development Company decides it needs a second Mac for QA I convince company to buy the $799 Mac mini for the second machine (as of this writing, 2.53GHz/320GB HD/4GB RAM), let me have it for development, and let QA have the $599 Mac mini Company does just that, now I have both So, what's the best way to move from one of these to the other? Just set up everything on the second one and be done with it? Can I transfer things from the first to the second somehow? I'm running Time Machine backups to an external drive on the $599 Mac mini, if that helps. Also both of these will be on the network at the same time, other than renaming one of the machines are there considerations to be had there?

• windows cache not working as it should?

  I run windows 2012 server with data center. The setup is with 60GB of RAM. I have one file shared on VHD and when I copy this file locally the RAM cache is all used up but when multiple computers connect to the share it the cache is not used. The network is 8Gb. The whole network is around 200 computers that need to read that one file but on this setup only 10 connection kills the server. Is there any way to check what is going on? What other solution can I use to manage cache in windows?

• Boxee on Dell 32in TV causes headaches, how to troubleshoot?

  I have revamped an old pc, installing 4GB ram and a 256MB video card so that I could run Boxee to a Dell W3200 series TV that came with my apartment. It is connected via VGA, resolution is 1360x768, 24bit color, 60Htz refresh rate. Unfortunately, every time I use it I end up with a headache after less that 30 min. I have had my eyes check recently, and am able to play xbox (connected via hdmi) on the same TV without problems. What are the potential causes? My system seems to well meet or exceed the min requirements for boxee, XP, AMD Atholon 64 X2 Dual Core, 4GB RAM. Could it be the VGA cable? What is the most cost effective way to trouble shoot?

• Big Excel File Freezing/Running Slowly

  Hi, My co-worker has a very large Excel file (over 7 MB) that suffers from the problems of (A) running slowly (B) taking forever to open/save/close and (C) freezing the computer, requiring a restart. I set the calculations to Manual, and I repaired the file, but the file didn't change in file size and it is still having these problems. My questions are: (1) Is there any way around this problem or is Excel just bad at handling ~7MB files? (2) Would upgrading RAM make a big difference? (3) It's possible that we can't afford to spend the money on a RAM upgrade. Are there are any other ways of mitigating the problem? Thanks.

• Visual Studio Development on Virtual Box, Boot Camp, or VMWare Fusion

  I currently have a Mac, 2ghz and 2 gigs of ram, running OS X Leopard and Virtual Box with a Windows 7 Pro 32bit virtual machine. Performance on the virtual machine is fine for minor tasks but is very clunky while trying to multi-task or develop in Visual Studio 2008. What would be my best option for being able to use Visual Studio, keeping cost and time in mind? 1) Upgrade ram to 4 gigs ($100). Will this really improve my performance enough to use Visual Studio in a Windows 7 vm? Or am I just wasting time/money? 2) Reinstall/restore Windows 7 disk image as a Boot Camp partition. I assume this should improve my performance, yes? 3) Purchase VMWare fusion instead of VirtualBox. Does Fusion require less resources to run? I am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance

• Does OEM license of x86 Windows 7 extend to the x64 version?

  I bought a laptop that came preinstalled with 2GB of RAM and Windows 7 Professional x86. I upgraded to 8GB RAM, and naturally want to install the x64 version of Windows. The laptop came without media, with the option to create a bootable restore disc, which is, of course Win7 x86. Question 1: does my Win7 license cover both x86 and x64 versions? Question 2: is there a legitimate way to acquire x64 install media (e.g. from Microsoft) for a nominal fee? (believe it or not, the laptop manufacturer support had the gall to suggest that I should have bought a differently configured machine in the first place) Thank you!

• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this? • It's the ethernet 10/100 in LAN transfer faster than USB 1.0?

  I have an old laptop (PIII 800MHz, with 256 RAM) that I wish to use as my home server: it'll have to serve just two people, so I think that I'll be more than ok as for the RAM and the CPU. The issue is about data, because the internal hard disk is a 12GB, that is...ridicolous! I have more than 60GB of mixed storage and counting (images, videos and music) in an external usb hd. I could put the hd in my desktop pc just to serve the big files through ethernet or let it inside its usb box attached to the laptop. The question is: which of these solutions will be the fastest? USB 1.0 attached to the server (laptop) or internal hard disk serving files via 10/100 ethernet to the laptop on demand?

  I have developed ASP.NET 4.5 application which take infos about sensors from sqlite database every 3 seconds. This application runs nice on my local develop machine on IIS Express server. I have created virtual machine (4x 3,25 GHz CPU; 6GB RAM) where i have installed Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8 service in order to test application on real server because we will run it on production machine later. After installing VC++ 2010 x64 and VC++ 2010 x86 and set "Enable 32-bit application" to true in application pool website started to work but there is a large problem with response time. There is a for example 10 seconds delay before page loads. CPU utillization is about 10% and RAM about 1,5GB. I am new to configuring IIS server so i want to ask if there is some tip how to make it faster. I am sure, there will be some twist which will make it normal work. Many thanks.

The user opening the word document does not have admin rights and the AccessVBOM flag is either not available or set to zero.   I've got a server that receives around a million unique visitors a month and I've recently began using Plesk to help monitor some of the vitals on the box itself. RAM I can make sense of, but I'm not really sure if my CPU usage is too high, low, or about average for this number of visitors. The server exists solely to serve up a somewhat hefty WordPress blog. • HTTP transfer speeds start fast then slows to a crawl

  We just got a new dedicated 1 gigabit server running IIS. The CPU is 15% or less, the RAM (4 GB total) has 3 GB unused... We are pushing 110 mbits per second... Speeds are really slow.. And, if fact, here's how it happens: We connect, and then the speeds are really fast, and quickly decline to 40 kBps or less. What's going on? It seems the server just wont go above 120 mbits per second. The files are all very large. 50 MB to 500 MB... Could this be a factor? Again, CPU, RAM, UI responsiveness when accessing remotely all seem fine.

• Computer refuses to POST

  Computer refuses to POST. What it will do is the fan spins up, and the lights come on on the motherboard, but other then that it just sits there and laughs in my face! Here is what I have done... I have tried 2 different video cards, both known to work, 4 different sticks of RAM in all four ram slots, 2 processors (known to work), and 2 power supplies (known to work). The only constant is the motherboard... The Motherboard is a Asus m3a3-mvp deluxe. Anyone have any other ideas? Also, I have bread boarded it to make sure there where no shorts (taken everything out of the case and tried again).

  I have a small vps, with only 256mb of ram, with maximum burst up to 512mb. When I configure my vps without innodb, it only uses 130 mb of ram, so that is no problem for me. But when I turn on innodb, The memory usage grows to about 300-400 mb. Is it possible to run innodb such that I won't exceed the 256mb? preferably I don't want to use more than 100mb for innodb. I already came across some sites which said I could limit the memory usage, but if I limit it to only 100mb will the db run well enough? (compared to for example the MyISAM storage engine) If 100mb is to little memory for innodb, can you recommend me any other storage engine which supports transactions?

  I'm planning the deployment of a mid-sized website with a SQL Server Standard DB. I've chosen Amazon EC2 to deploy it. I now have to choose between these 2 options: 1) get 2 small instances (1 core each, 1.7 GB of ram each): one for the IIS front-end, one for running the DB. Note: these "small instances" can only run the 32-bit version of Win2008 Server 2) a single large instance (4 cores, 7.5 gb of ram) where I'd install both IIS and the SQL Server. Note: this large instance can only run the 64-bit version of Win2008 Server What's better in terms on performance, scalability, ease of management (launch up a new instance while I backup the principal instance) etc. All suggestions and points of view are welcome!

• Excel 2010 -Excel cannot complete this task with available resources

  Getting this error when trying to sort a document (Excel cannot complete this task with available resources). Document isn't particularly large, about 4,000 lines. Can't seem to figure out why this would start on this. I can sort this same file fine on everything back to Excel 2000 on older crappy computers. Computer is running Win 7 x64, 16 Gb RAM, and another 16 Gb of virtual. There's no possible way that all of the memory is actually getting exhausted when I can perform this on an older XP machine with 512 Mb of RAM, unless 2010's memory usage is inconceivably poorly designed. I found a few posts on forums stating that there might be a security update related bug. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• HP Pavillion dv6 laptop - 15 beeps on startup and a black screen?

  Usual story - girlfriend's step-brother's laptop is broken. I don't know a huge amount about what occurred before it broke, but I do know the following: When you try to turn the laptop on, it beeps 15 times exactly. The screen remains black. The LED on the Caps Lock key flashes continuously. If left on, the laptop never boots - as far as I can see. If left on, on a stable surface with decent ventilation for a relatively short period of time, the laptop (below keyboard, but not where the RAM/HDD are) gets very hot. I've tried doing what most websites appear to recommend for similar problems, which is to disconnect AC and battery then hold the power button down for a minute before reconnecting the AC and trying to turn the laptop on - no difference. EDIT I've also tried re-seating the RAM, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.
