• Two people using the same computer at the same time remotely!

  We have two computer in office and two people. My computer is much more faster than another computer. Is it possible my colleague connect to my computer remotely and work by my computer? Using "Remote Desktop" in Windows only one user can log into computer. So when he connect remotely, my user logged off. Is there a tool which can help in this case? I already knew VNC (RealVNC) But it's not helping because when a user connect to my computer, he see exactly my desktop, not his own user desktop.

• Internet Dropping?!

  I have a virtual DC running DNS and Routing and Remote Access, that routes ALL workstations Internet traffic out to the Internet, this works fine but noticed that the Internet drops occasionally. I've checked with our service provider (Managed Communications) and they are adamant that it's not their fault. The Internet drops seem to affect everyone. We also have a server configured to use the same Internet service on a different network over a site-to-site VPN connection which also suffers from packet drops. I've spoken to Cisco and have done many tests with Cisco and they believe the problem is down to the ISP. I'm wondering if it's a DNS issue, as the Internet service uses OpenDNS. Any ideas?

• Why are network printers not available in the Add Printer Wizard...when run over a network?

  From a Windows 2003 server machine I browsed the network to an XP client (\computername in Explorer) then double-clicked Printers and Faxes and then Add Printer. In the wizard, normally the second screen asks if you want to install a local printer or a network printer. Well, in this case, it seems to assume I want a local printer, because the second screen is what would normally be the third screen if you chose local printer and clicked Next. I want to install a network printer on a remote machine for its local users. Is this not possible? If not, why not?

• RDP for High DPI Monitors?

  A client is having some problems with their laptop. They use RDP to remote into their work PC, but the laptop they are using is a small 13" Sony Vaio laptop, but with 1920x1080 resolution. Everything is pretty small on the laptop anyway, but the problem is much worse after connecting with RDP, where everything is almost unreadable. I have done the obvious with changing the resolution on the server, the RDP size, forced scaling on the terminal server etc, but nothing has worked. Something else which I would normally do is change the laptop resolution to something a little lower, but the laptop only has 2 resolution settings, the big one, and a 1024x768 (wrong ratio). Any ideas?

• Unable to connect my computer from LAN (http, smb) in UBUNTU 10.04

  I installed ubuntu 10.04, Apache, PHP, mysql, smb. Everything work fine in locally in my IP. When i trying to access my computer from LAN (other computer), it shows unable to connect. when i ping my IP from remote computer, its pinging OK. I can access internet, and all other systems (http, smb). But the problem is no one can't access my computer remotely in my LAN network. My ip is 192.168.85.105 and i want access(Appaceh,SMB) from 192.168.85.10. Is there any proxy firewall settings? I had tried following commands.. sudo iptables -F or sudo iptables-restore [logout require] If it does not work then try to disable net-filter sudo ufw --disable Please give me the solution.

• Windows Server 2008: Terminal Services / VDI

  I have a Dell R710 with 72GB of memory running Hyper-V. Within Hyper-V I have a Windows 2008 (32-bit) VM running Terminal Services. How do I allocate memory so that any user who connects to this Terminal Server (from their thin-client) is allocated 2GB (or whatever amount I choose) of memory? Currently I have provisioned the TS with 2GB of memory but it seems that this is shared among all that connect. Please let me know if there is further information I can provide. Thank you. Update 1: What I'm looking to accomplish with this server is setting up a VDI to allow users to connect from thin-clients from within our network. They will also have to connect from outside our network via VPN which is already in place. Am I able to set this up using Windows Server 2008 (not R2) because I have a 16-bit application which needs to be supported. Unfortunately it's not a candidate as a Remote App.

• Windows scheduler - Tasks not running when user not logged in

  I have Windows Server 2003, with schedules setup via Remote Desktop under one account. That account appears in the 'creator' column too. I have 'Run only if logged on' unticked. When I have logged in under that account and then 'disconnected' leaving the the session alive, the schedule runs. But every time the server is rebooted, the task again fails to run until I again log in and disconnect. Any KB fixes I've missed or issues I've overlooked? Normally I only discover the issue when a user tells me the schedule has stopped running so it's a real reliability issue. I'd also be happy with an answer suggesting an alternative scheduler with higher reliability. Thanks

  I would like to access the office machine, which has a fixed IP, and is available only in its local LAN. Let say 192.168.1.100. I have a VPN with username/password connection and I am trying to access the office machine from another location, i.e., another LAN, which has the same subnet: 192.168.1.50. I am using MacOSX 10.8. I have checked the "send all trafic over VPN connection, but I think it looks like it doesn't care and is searching in Local. I do not have admin privileges and can't request to make changes to the network settings in both LANs. Is there any way to connect to the desired remote machine?

• Share one monitor with another user and display their screen as well

  My housemate and I just started playing the original RollerCoaster Tycoon again - what a nostalgia trip! Anyways, we both have two monitors, and would like to view the other's game on the secondary monitor while playing, since we're in different rooms. VNC-like applications sorta work, but they require two separate instances running (one to share each direction), and as a whole are rather slow and clumsy. We don't need any remote control at all, just viewing. I'm using XP, he Win7. We could probably get it to run through some means in Linux, if necessary.

• Can I increase the link speed of the RAS Server on our MS Win2k3 box?

  We are running a Win2K3 Server box, and I'm a remote employee that connects via VPN. I've been frustrated for some time by the connection speed over the VPN (the office HQ has a decent speed and I have a biz class connection here), and decided to do some checking today. This morning, I was dialed in and looked at the networking tab of the task manager, and I see that the adapter for the RAS Server (the box has 4 Gigabit adapters) has a speed that seems far too low. The speed for the RAS Server link hovers between 300 - 600 Kbps. The local connection (and others) all say 1 Gbps. Can I set this to a higher speed? Is this information accurate? We would like to set-up our own backup-server running on any operating system (windows appreciated) which comes with a web-interface, that enables to restore individual versions of one file. Because budget is limited, an open-source software or at least a cheap software is a must!   We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

• Best way to find the computer a user last logged on from?

  I am hoping that somewhere in Active Directory the "last logged on from [computer]" is written/stored, or there is a log I can parse out? The purpose of wanting to know the last PC logged on from is for offering remote support over the network - our users move around pretty infrequently, but I'd like to know that whatever I'm consulting was updating that morning (when they logged in, presumably) at minimum. I'm also considering login scripts that write the user and computer names to a known location I can reference, but some of our users don't like to logout for 15 days at a time. If there is an elegant solution that uses login scripts, definitely mention it - but if it happens to work for merely unlocking the station, that would be even better!

I've tried many things, including: plink 1.2.3.4 -l root -pw mypassword -m hello.sh input1 input2 In this case it seems that plink thinks that input1 and input2 are its arguments.. which makes sense. I was lucky enough that everything went smoothly :)

  I have a W2008 R2 installed on a different network (I am on 192.168.0.x - new server on 192.168.3.x) I had trouble ping and RDP to it. I disabled the firewall to test the connection: and that opened the ping feature but I still can not RDP to that machine. the allow remote access is enabled As per sinni80 idea - Here is the error message The networks are divided by a Fortigate 60-B router - 2ndy interface for the gateway is 192.168.3.254 (and pingable from all) any to any rule on both networks is in place. As per Joe Schmoe idea - I am able to RDP to 192.168.3.1 from 192.168.3.3 (which is on the same network) Data to add: - The servers are on a VM host, each of the servers has 2 nics one is DHCP enabled into the 192.168.0.x network 2nd is static IP in the 192.168.3.x -- Further information: The network 192.168.0.x - are on a domain network (active Directory) The network 192.168.3.x - are grouped in a workgroup What should I check more please?

  I had a remote server running Debian Sarge that experienced some HDD failure and I meant to reboot it hoping that fsck could repair the errors automatically. I eventually drove out there and replaced the faulty disks... But I was wondering: What other ways are there to force a Linux system to reboot that do not require hard drive access? What I had tried: shutdown -r now Did not work, as shutdown is a program that would have to be loaded from disk, the error shown in the terminal was bash: /sbin/shutdown: Input/output error init 6 same as above telinit q same as above kill -2 1 This did not print an error, but did not work either. (However, it is possible that the Sarge init did not implement SIGINT, the sarge manpages did not mention it. So it could work in a more recent version of Debian) This guide on PCFreak.net. However, this failed at sysctl, which was not in memory either.

• Disable/configure Back and Forward through mouse wheel in Internet Explorer

  I have a problem with Internet Explorer (version 7 on Windows XP). Sometimes (not always) when you use the mouse wheel to scroll a page up/down it instead chooses to go back or forth in the web browsing history. This behavior is the same as when you hold the shift-key simultaneously using the wheel. My guess is that Internet Explorer somehow gets misled by something and thinks that I'm actually pressing shift. This is in turn maybe an artifact of the fact that this particular session is a remote-desktop session originating from Linux (Ubuntu). Needless to say the problem can be quite irritating and the alternative of completely turning off the wheel functionality doesn't seem like an option as other applications would suffer greatly from this. Anyway back to my question(s): Is it possible to map the shift+wheel to a simple wheel event for Internet Explorer? Is it possible to disable the shift+wheel event for Internet Explorer? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

• Will restarting the W3SVC Web Publishing Service, also restart the app pool in IIS?

  Background: I'm trying to stop and start IIS on a windows 7 build box, in order to run acceptance tests. But from what I have read, most of the remote web management features have been disabled by Microsoft in a retarted attempt to sell more Windows Server 2008 licenses. Still for some reason they didn't disable the least user-friendly ways of controlling IIS remotely, but they are all a total pain. What I can do easily is remotely stop and start the WWW service from a msbuild task. But I want to be sure that this also restarts the app pool, so that when I copy in new web files the web server there will be serving the most recent version of the website. Question: If I restart the W3SVC windows service, will that also restart the app pool?

  I've configured Thunderbird to place a copy of my sent emails in my remote "sent" folder of my Gmail account as opposed to the local thunderbird one. This ensures I can completely take advantage of my imap synchronization. And so whenever I send an email, it first sends one to the address list, then it sends a new one to my sent box, however doing this with large attachments seems like a waste of time and bandwidth. Do you guys know of any extension or a combination of a trick plus a Gmail filter that could automate this in one step?

  Hi I have 2 NICs on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. nic1 with ip address 192.168.2.1 with gatewaty 192.168.2.254 and nic2 with ip address 10.96.6.253 with no gateway. The windows 2008 server is connected to a router which is connnected to another router so if I want to connect to the windows 2008 server I use 192.168.0.31 because it is forwarded. If I use remote desktop to connect to that machine I use 192.168.0.31 and that works well, but the server has a seccond nic and I want to be able to connect with a remotedesktop to nic2.   I have 2 Windows 2008 Server R2 machines - one is Japanese language based and the other English. When I try to connect from the English language server using Windows Server Backup (snap-in) I get the following message: "An internal error has occurred in the backup engine or the computer that you are connected to remotely is running a version of backup application that is not compatible with the version on your local computer" Both claim to be running Version 1 of Windows Server Backup. Is remote connection to non-identical language server OSs a known problem? Specifically this is seen when attempting the "Connect To Another Server" in the action pane of Windows Server Backup.

  Can I connect to a RD session that has been started (and abandoned) from a remote machine using xrdp? Also I'd like to be able to do the exact opposite: to remotely login to a session that has been initiated locally. I'm trying to get as close as possible to how Windows RS behaves. (Which also includes that the session would use my terminal machine/monitor resolution. I wasn't able to achieve that using VNC.) Suggestions to a better alternative to xrdp are welcome please. I don't know Linux too much.
