• Explorer hijacked by a trojan

  I managed to catch a newish trojan that my Anti virus program wasn't able to detect. I'm usually not that bad at technical stuff regarding computers but I really don't know what to do with this one anymore. The trojan somehow managed to get my Windows to recover it every time I try to remove it by deleting it's exe (called some weird name located in Programs "asdza/saddasn.exe" (example only)). It also sets an entry in my autostart. It starts a second explorer.exe and tries to connect to some server obviously trying to steal data. (glad I still have my firewall) How can I get rid of this trojan, I really need help. It is new and probably unrecognized by all major virus scanners.

  When i start wuala on the linux commandline like this, it logs me in and the folder is mounted: wualamcd login username password enableAutoLogin I can shut it down from another console typing wuala shutdown But how do I actually use the auto login that I just set using the enableAutoLogin switch? What is the command to start it again, so it logs in but does not need the password? I tried wualamcd login and wuala starts but no one gets logged in. Auto login in gui mode works fine. This is 32 bit linux with openjdk 6 JRE.

• Keep lan connection alive while going to sleep

  Is it possible to keep lan connection alive when going to sleep? Although I would like a laptop independent(in general) answer, my laptop is Thinkpad T500 and the power manager shows in PCI options, the following three option regarding saving link state power: Off, moderate, maximum. Also instant resume apparently does something different, so that isn't much help either. I'm on Windows-7. Here's why: I'm a student, and currently I keep my laptop on almost all the time, but sometimes I sleep it and then I require to check something, so I turn it on. But then internet starts in at least a minute. So I avoid even putting it to sleep. I want that the internet connection should persist, so that I can put it to sleep to avoid power consumption.

  Hi Guys, AMD PC Motherboard - ASUS M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from ASUS website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

• Apache on Mac Mavericks issue

  Trying to run Apache so that I can create a testing server on my mac.When I start apache it starts, but it doesn't run (no connection to local host. Ill upload the unix,you'll see that after starting there is no processes, and I did a check to show you what was running on my port 80... I don't entirely know that means. • Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

• MacPro will freeze after first startup and first time screen saver activates

  I've run into a bizarre situation every time my MacPro first starts up in the morning when I get to work and the screen saver activates for the first time. When I try to deactivate the screen saver hitting the keyboard or mouse nothing will happen. At best I will get one of the following... Able to move the mouse but clicking does nothing Login prompt will show up but typing on the keyboard does nothing At worst the screen will be fully locked. In all cases I will have to reboot my machine to get it to work again. After this initial restart the machine is fine for the rest of the day. Anyone encountered something like this before?

Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

• Add TOC to PDF from XML/JSON/file?

  I currently have a PDF file without any ToC (for example, in Mac's Preview.app, I can't see the ToC in the sidebar). But I have the TOC in XML format, where there is a title and a pagenumber where that section starts. Is there any way I can add that TOC to my PDF file in a batch way? Since I have the TOC in XML, I can basically parse it in any possible way, so if there were a command line to add an TOC item to a PDF, I could also do that. Any ideas?

  Possible Duplicate: What is the best software for desktop recording? Hi superuser's. I would like to record some tasks in a program (i want to make a video where i will be explaining how to use a particular program) and i haven't found a good software to do it yet... I have just tested camStudio but when i hit the Record Button the computer starts working very slowly (even when recording in a small area... so i wouldn't imagine how slow it will run if recording full screen). • getting Ubuntu-quality fonts / configuration under Cygwin/X

  I have Cygwin/X installed on a Win7 box. I also have an Ubuntu VM running on the Win7 host. If I do the following: Start Xming on the Win7 box Start mate-terminal under Cygwin/X then mate-terminal starts up with very crappy-looking fonts and a blinking cursor. (I'm using "Monospace 10" in mate-terminal.) If I then do: Use putty to ssh into the Ubuntu VM (fowarding the X connection) Run gnome-settings-daemon on the Ubuntu VM then the fonts in mate-terminal suddenly become much better looking and the cursor stops blinking (probably because I've configured it that way in Ubuntu.) Question: How can I get the better-looking fonts and the ability to set cursor-blinks option for mate-terminal under Cygwin/X without having to run the Ubuntu VM? FWIW, I have Xming-fonts-7-5-0-4 installed. Update: Starting Xming with '-dpi 101' as suggested here helps, but the fonts are still not anti-aliased.

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again?   Does MySQL 5.5 InnoDB keep indexes in memory and tables on disk? Does it ever do it's own in-memory caching of part or whole tables? Or does it completely rely on the OS page cache (I'm guessing that it does since Facebook's SSD cache that was built for MySQL was done at the OS-level: https://github.com/facebook/flashcache/)? Does Linux by default use all of the available RAM for the page cache? So if RAM size exceeds table size + memory used by processes, then when MySQL server starts and reads the whole table for the first time it will be from disk, and from that point on the whole table is in RAM? So using Alchemy Database (SQL on top of Redis, everything always in RAM: http://code.google.com/p/alchemydatabase/) shouldn't be much faster than MySQL, given the same size RAM and database?

• Create an AWS AMI for Ubuntu with GUI which automatically launches web browser

  I've got an ubuntu AMI setup with ubuntu desktop installed and Chrome installed and set to boot on load (via the startup programmes menu within the ubuntu desktop) I've created an image of this AMI, but any time I launch a new instance running this, the Ubuntu GUI doesn't seem to load, until I SSH into the machine, enable VNC and then connect via Chicken VNC to the machine. At that point, the desktop appears to load + starts the browser. I really need the machine to boot and the browser to load without having to VNC into the machine.. Any help would be appreciated.

• DVD ROM not working only in windows?

  I have an Asus N53SV laptop, My DVD rom doesn't read any type of DVD in windows , but I just installed windows 7 from a bootable DVD , I think this problem occurred after I tried to change my partitioning with paragon partition magic , I was trying to shrink , join and so , after that my windows showed an error that windows cannot find [weird address] on hard disk every time on starts. windows itself says the DVD drive works correctly and driver is working properly, but no DVD or CD can be read , note that the DVD I'm trying to read is the same DVD which I used to install windows some minutes ago. I don't know what's the problem

• A button to set all processes to on-hold for Linux?

  When Linux starts swapping you're basically doomed. Very soon the system won't react to any input any more, but happily swap on until the end of days... Can you think of a command that holds all processes whatsoever, thus (and while) allowing you to open a clean shell where you can examine the source of the problem and kill the process which ate up all the memory? (I guess this won't be easy, because as the memory is probably completely filled up you'd need to swap out some more memory to gather space for opening a shell, on the other hand all other swapping processes must be stopped.) If you tied such a command to a hot key then maybe you can use this as an emergency button saving you a lot a time. Any ideas if this is possible at all? Has somebody tried something like this before? If one could realize this it would be a cool feature :)

• OS2/Warp - Remotely Stop and Restart a Program

  Our current phone system runs off of a legacy OS2/Warp box. Periodically we have to log into the machine and restart OS2RSD.exe and then start it again and the phone system starts working again. The problem is we have to physically get in front of the box and use the GUI to stop and restart the process. Is it possibly to remotely run a script to kill OS2RSD.exe if its running and then start it again? I have been unable to figure this out on my own. The OS is OS2/Warp Version 3 if that helps.

  if my VM's are not created using virt-manager or are created using any other tool, then virsh system list command does not give them in the list of running VM's however they are running perfectly on my KVM server. Is there a way to list these VM's in my system list anyhow? I have VM's managed by GKVM, AQEMU, libvirt etc. also some of the user start their VM's using the qemu command as follows: kvm "image name" -m "memory". this starts the VM and allow them to work perfectly. but I am not able to list all these VM's using the virsh system list command.

• Mongodump on Gridfs is killing the host IOs

  I'm trying to make a mongodump from our production mongodb while the production is running. We have three production instances, one regular mongodb, one with very few gb of data on gridfs, one with a larger amount of data on gridfs. All mongodb instances are running in version 2.4.9 on a ubuntu 10.04 virtual server. I use a mongodump command to export the bases to another server. Unfortunately our machines are virtually hosted in a "low performances" datacenter (vmware based) so when I try to export the large gridfs db, the disk IO hits 100% (and 50% of the cpu starts waiting for IO too). This has a very negative impact on the production applicatiosn because db access time is excessively increased, making the applications unusable. I'm looking for a way to regulate the mongodump so the export goes slower but cooler on the hardware ressources allowing better performances for the applications to run. Has anyone had a similar scenario ?

• Computers "applying computer settings" for a long time on start-up...why?

  Hello. Might be a bit of a slong shot but I'm stumped, along with the ICT Manager for the school I'm working it. In one of the IT rooms when you switch a computer on it will boot through BIOS fine, but when it gets to "applying computer settings" it can hang for a long time (~15 minutes). If you unplug the computer from the network it starts up fine, gets to the login screen, then you can plug the network cable in and it will work fine. I don't think it's anything to do with the fact we've been coming close to running out of IP addresses or a problem with our DHCP. Microsoft KB says apply the latest service pack, which we've done, and check a service. Servers and domian controllers are S2003, Computers and Desktops are XP. Does anybody have any thoughts on what to try?

• Do virtual machines perform better on the host HDD or USB drive?

  The question I'm asking is kind of general, and I'll give more specifics about my specific setup. Here's the main question though: Do virtual machines generally perform better on the host HDD or is it better to operate them from an external disk? My specific setup: A Macbook Pro with a nearly full internal SATA drive that spins at 7200. On this system I'm running large programs like Photoshop and some other RAM-intense applications. I've dedicated 2 of my 8 gigs of RAM to my VMware Fusion virtual machine, which runs Windows 7 and Visual Studio, sits on the same drive. When that thing boots up, my system really starts crawling. I have an external USB (specifics of that drive are here) which I'm thinking about moving the VM to. Obviously a USB drive is slower than my internal HDD, but maybe having two operating systems using the same disk is WORSE than putting one of them on a separate (albiet slower) disk. This a bad idea?

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • Word 2007 "Out of Memory or Disk Space" Error on launch.

  Word 2007 is installed on a Vista Home Premium machine and whenever it starts up it opens what appears to be a dynamic installer to do something and then throws up the "Out of Memory or Disk Space" error. Word 2007 never completes starting up. Reinstalling Word hasn't helped and if I can avoid reinstalling Windows until Windows 7 is released and get Word working in the mean time, that would be ideal. I've been looking around for a solution, once of which seemed to point to a problem with the user account. I created a second user on the machine and Word still had the same problem. The other solution that seems possible is a corrupted normal.dot/normal.dotm file. However, even in the location it should be, I can't seem to find it. Am I going in the right direction with this? Is there another solution I haven't come across that will fix this? If it is possible that renaming normal.dot/normal.dotm how can I find it?

• How to use UMLFS?

  I'm trying to mount what is inside UML session as FUSE filesystem on host. There's "uml_mount" program which looks like a thing for this purpose, but it fails. What is UMLFS (I haven't found any documentation at all) and how to mount it? uml_mount mounts FUSE filesystem and starts uml_mconsole <umid> umlfs <file descriptor> which tries to send this file descriptor to UML kernel (to deal with further FUSE things), but sending fails. Also I haven't found any signs of FUSE inside a kernel. Do I need some special patch for this?
