• Navigation keys on numeric keypad randomly stop working

  Shortly after a restart, the arrow and navigation (Home, End...) keys on my numeric keypad will randomly stop working, and -- regardless of the state of the NumLock -- return only numbers. I notice this the most in browser applications (like this edit box) but the same effect is true on the command line and in desktop applications like Word. I swapped keyboards and now use a Microsoft keyboard (both are USB keyboards) but the same behavior persists. I also tried a clean boot to clean out startup programs but this made no difference. The separate arrow keys and navigation keys between the QWERTY keys and the numeric keypad work fine, but my strong preference (dating back to DOS and MS Flight Simulator) is to use the navigation keys in the numeric keypad.

• Windows calibration settings persistance over reboots

  I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a laptop (Samsung R560) using a cheap external CRT monitor. The screen is a littler dark for my liking, despite having the physical monitors settings up to the max for all the brightness-related settings. Windows 7 has a tool called "Calibrate display color" (search in the start menu). Running this tool, you have a slider that allows you to adjust the "Gamma", which sliding up gives me acceptable brightness levels. Unfortunately, upon reboot (and certain other activities such as running certain fullscreen games) this is reset to default. Is there a way to make this persistent? Some registry setting? Batch file to run at startup even (less preferable as I'd like games to run brighter too)?

• Intel motherboard drops HDMI output after Windows boots

  I have an Intel motherboard (DH67CL) that uses Intel HD 3000 video. It has two video output ports: HDMI and DVI. Both my monitors are DVI, so I have two cables: a DVI-DVI and an HDMI-DVI. If I plug a monitor into just one of these ports, things work fine. But if I plug monitors into each of the ports, the system startup screens show on both monitors, along with the "Starting Windows..." screen, but as soon as the system boots into Windows, the HDMI-connected monitor goes to sleep. When I use the Intel video control panel, the HDMI-connected monitor is not detected. How do I get a dual-monitor setup to work?

• Windows 7 won't restart with SSD

  I have this annoying problem that I just can't seem to fix. Recently I upgraded my main boot drive to an OCZ Vertex Turbo (60GB) which is an SSD. I've installed Windows 7 64bit. The drive works, and is really quick... blah blah blah. My problem is when I do a restart, for example click start, then arrow next to shutdown, and restart. The computer will shut down, and do a warm reboot, but it gets stuck where it says loading Windows. Just before the animation starts. So what I have to do is physically press the reset switch on the computer, then it restarts, firing up a menu which offers to launch Windows Startup Repair, so I select "Start Windows Normally". After this I boot in normally, but its damn annoying. Any ideas why this is happening, what I can do to fix it?

• Vista won't boot - just get black screen

  When I boot into Windows Vista (Ultimate), I just get a black screen (with the mouse visible and working). If I run in safe mode, it seems to pause for a while when loading crcdisk.sys. A lot of research says it could be a problem with the hard drive, but I dual boot Ubuntu and that works fine and I can still see and use the Windows partition absolutely fine from Ubuntu. I tried using the "startup repair" option on the Vista install disk but it didn't detect any problems. I have run chkdsk several times, with this: chkdsk C: /f /r And also drive D (the recycle bin). The first two times it detected and fixed errors on the C drive but now it doesn't detect any errors. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors. • Linux PCIE Physical Bus Address

  I am working on designing a custom PCIexpress card. I am trying to write a kernel module that will DMA my custom card. Right now when i plug the card into linux no valid PCI device shows up (meaning I probably have a error on my end, i know) however, If I halt the system at startup in the bootloader (uboot) I am able to directly access the card as I know in uboot the physical memory address that is mapped to my device. Is there a way I can access the card in a simliar fashion in linux? Thanks, Stephanie

• Postgresql spawning a ridiculous number of postmaster processes

  For some reason postgres is spawning 700 postmaster processes for handling database requests and the postgres log file if full of 'unexpected EOF on client connection', 'incomplete startup packet' and 'sorry, too many clients already'. netstat tells me that all the open connections are local and I'm pretty sure are coming from postgres internally. This particular instance has been running just fine for the last 230 days or so and nothing has changed configuration wise. Any thoughts on where I should be looking to try and resolve this issue? This is my first time diagnosing a problem like this so if there is any steps I can take to help narrow down the cause that would be helpful as well.

Ok, so i thought i try out on myself what is getaddrinfo delivering, and then i got: getaddrinfo: command not found I guess, something is missing on my system. Can anyone help?

  I installed MAMP PRO on my Macbook Pro (10.6) some time ago. Now I would like to use zip functions in php. I found that I must add zip.so to my extension folder and edited php.ini. On my computer I have two different versions of PHP one in MAMP folder and other in user/lib which was pre-installed on my system. Now I wish to compile my zip library for MAMP version. I got zip sources for my version of PHP then in terminal called function /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/phpize so it uses mamp php version ./configure make then I moved compile zip.so to extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613. • laptop does not boot

  I have hp probook 4520s lap. But now it does not boot. When I press switch on button fans are working but it shows black screen. HDD light just blink one or two times when start but it will not continue. And usually web cam light should blink one time when startup but it doesn't. I connect to different monitor but couldn't see a output. This lap bought 3 months before but it doesn't have international warranty. Therefore I can not do anything.   My boss update my computer to Snow Leopard, after the update we had a set back and deleted a few files/folders, since then is just nightmare after another one. I finally getting things back but I'm still having problems with MySQL. This is what I did: Deleted ALL of mysql files/folders Download and installed the packages mysql-5.1.45-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg installed the Startup item and the preferences panel After the above, I tried to start MySQL from the preferences panel without luck, and running the following command from Terminal /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql I get the following result ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) I looked at some other post for possible solutions, but what they does not exactly fits my problem, so I cannot find a solution. I'm new to all this and your help will be much appreciated.

  I have a BSOD on windows 7 with SSD during boot after improper shutdown (while windows animation logo is moving). The computer restart imediatly after BSOD, and windows proposes to launch startup repair (if i do it, it takes +-5min and fixes the problem : computer starts normally). However, after any new improper shutdown, i got the same problem. Remarks: If i unplug, re-plug the SSD whyle system is shutdown, i have the same problem. • How do I package this vbscript as a msi for Group Policy

  I had a developer that is no longer with us create an msi to do this for me, but the package is outdated now and we need to deploy new files. Basically I need to do the following: Take the code at the bottom of this question and deploy it to all users as a software install package in Group Policy. I don't want to use a computer startup script because I don't want this to run at every login...just once to install and be done. • BSOD STOP 0x0000007B on windows 7

  I have windows 7 with Ubuntu installed(Wubi installer). I didn't shut down my computer properly I guess because of which now I am getting the following BSOD STOP Error: 0x0000007B (0x80786B58 0xC0000034 0x00000000 0x00000000) But I am able to boot into Ubuntu without any problems. Now I've ran startup recovery about 3-4 times, tried system restore but nothing changes. I even ran CHKDSK /r /f from recovery console. I've not tried Fixmbr or Fixboot because I am afraid Ubuntu won't be able to boot then. Has anyone ever even able to get through this error?

  I'm trying to get an old PCI video card (Diamond Stealth 2500) along with a normal PCI-E video card. In BIOS, there is a setting to switch between PEG/PCI or PCI/PEG on startup (PEG is PCI-E Graphics). When I use PCI/PEG only the old PCI card works, when I use the other one, only the new PEG card works. In PEG/PCI mode, Windows 7 recognizes the card and shows it in Device Manager as Standard VGA adapter, but it shows a warning for the device ("This device cannot start. (Code 10)").

• Java application crashes my computer. How do I troubleshoot?

  I am using NetBeans 4.1 for my university course (this is an older version, but is the required version for the course - I can't use a newer version). Whenever I use it for longer than several minutes, my computer crashes - it either reboots or I need to reset it. I have tried running with all startup items disabled (to rule out other applications interfering with the app), but it did no good. I have used Sysinternals procmon logging and the logs are corrupt - the only way I was able to get a good log was by enabling boot logging. However these are huge and I don't know what to look for. I am using Windows XP SP3, fully patched up and this is the only application that I have any kind of problem with. Can anyone suggest troubleshooting steps that will help me pinpoint the cause of these crashes and fix them?

• Aironet 1200's Auto-Channel Feature: When should it be used?

  In our building we have around 25 1200 series Aironets, with a bit of overlap in some areas. Up until this point, we have had them deployed in alternating 1/6/11 channels, but we are wondering if we would get better performance if we used the auto-channel select feature. In looking around, I have seen comments that this feature should not be used as the WAP does a channel scan only on the radio startup, but I have not found this in any Cisco docs. • Netboot Intel Macs without BSDP

  I have a netboot setup with DeployStudio that works great in my lab, but doesn't work on our main network. After some digging, I believe it's because our network admins are filtering BSDP (Boot Service Discovery Protocol) on our subnet at the switch level. Is it possible to hard code which server my clients (early 2007 iMac Core2Duos) should boot from without relying on BSDP? Perhaps relevant details: I do not have control over switch configs or DHCP settings. Client and server are running 10.6 Snow Leopard. The clients see the netboot server advertising itself in the 'Startup Disk' system preferences pane, but when I go to netboot it just leaves me with a flashing globe.
