• Hosting a web site at home: ISP Blocking port 80?

  Hello, I presume this is a better place to put this rather than server fault. I'm interested in setting up a small site to host at home as a "proof of concept" exercise, i.e. to prrove that I know how to do it. I've got a (virtual) server 2003 machine with a site on it, all configured with port forwarding through to 80 on my server. I have a Belkin F5D7634 which I have put my DYNDNS details in but when I try to go to my DYNDNS address it comes up with the page cannot be displayed. My ISP is Carphone Warehouse/AOL and I've been unable to find any information if they block port 80. If they do, can anybody reccomend a home provider that does not block port 80? Regards, Tom.

  Good day to you, I am running Google Chrome 4.0.249.89 and noticed a weird behavior with it. It loads but I get this error, notice there is an absent of commonly used pages in the display itself and displays the message. Upon closer inspection within the directory which I've captured here on pastebin.com Has google chrome ceased to function after a certain limit...? Just an example: if my blog was called http//timmy.com/ and I wanted to link to http//tom.com/, it would open a new window instead of the same window, but I wanted to link from http//timmy.com/ to http//timmy.com/somewhere/ in the same window. So I want all external link from my website to another in a new window/tab, but I want every internal link, from my website to somewhere else on my website, to be in the same window/tab. • Extension GLX missing...on a desktop PC

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new PC with an Nvidia GTX 560 graphics card, but after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (either -current or -current-updates), Unity won't start. When trying to start it manually I get the message "extension GLX missing". I've searched around and found results like this question which point out it's a problem with Nvidia Optimus laptops. • Would Apple be able to tell if I'm running Mac OS inside a VM?

  Just as the question/title says. I understand that running Mac OS inside of a VM is against the EULA for the consumer version (but not the server, which is much more expensive!) If I were to purchase a legal copy of Mac OS, and install it to a VM, then register as an Apple Developer, would they shut me out? Is there a way they can tell the difference between emulated hardware and Apple computers? I'm slightly unfamiliar with how all of Apple's software works. Windows goes through this "genuine" test whenever installing service packs, but I don't know if Mac goes through the same trouble. Many thanks, -Tom

• Oracle as a Service in the Cloud

  This should really be a Tweet, but I guess I'm writing a bit more. In theme of data migration and legacy modernization, I am seeing more and more of a push to consolidate data sources, especially from non-oracle to oracle in an effort to save dollars. From a modernization perspective, this fits in quite well. We are able to migrate things like Terradata, Sybase and DB2 and put that all into an Oracle database and then provide that as a OaaS (Oracle as a Service) Cloud offering. This seems to be a growing trend, and not unlike the cool RDS Amazon Database cloud being built on Oracle as well. We again find ourselves back in the similar theme of migration, however. The target technology sounds like a winner (COBOL to Java/SOA...DB2/Datacom/Adabas to Oracle) but the age-old problem of how to get there still persists. It it not trivial to migrate large amounts of pre-relational or "devolved" relational data. To do this, we again must revert back to a tight roadmap to migration and leverage the growing tools and services that we have. I'm working on a couple of new sections and chapters for a book that Tom and Prakash and I are writing around Database Migration and Consolidation. I'll share some snipits shortly.

  I've got a Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, and am unable to run any program for .net compact framework on it. My last three Smartphones had been HTC brand, and all the programs I tried are just simple winform apps, which ran on all HTC phones. But not on the Omnia. • How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

  We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

• How can I run Ghost from a bootable USB key drive?

  I have a laptop that does not have a cd-rom or floppy drive. It is able to boot from USB though. I have a disk image (ghost) of the disk that I need to restore back onto the laptop. I can't find a way to actually run the Ghost utility from a USB key though. I believe the ghost.exe should run from within DOS just fine but I can't seem to create a bootable USB key with DOS on it that allows me to run an EXE. Edit: I managed to find a Ghost utility that I could load from a bootable USB drive. Unfortunately, when I plug in my NTFS external drive (USB), it is not detected.

About books, its sad but many great computer books cannot be bought in my country. So, you can find many articles online, which says how memory was mapped back in pre x386 CPU. How there was explicit holes ready for MMIO BIOS, Video BIOS, etc. How there was A20 line for allowing higher memory access etc. Problem is, time changed. Today BIOSes are many times larger, and pure x86 16bit mode is used for booting and ROM flashing only. OS ignore BIOS as they access everything using drivers. And I just want to know, how it works today. I know not so specific question, but I read OS dev wiki, many articles, but all refering to days before massive usage of pure 32bit CPUs.

• boot failure trying to install linux distro from a cd

  Hoping someone can help me get this installation from a cd going. I'm using an older pc: hp pavillion 2.66Ghz, 512RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003. I reclaimed some an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working as its recognized in the bios (auto-detected) I downloaded a mini.iso of ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM] and I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CDROM. This old pc also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave, so the Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned cd with the linux distro. So, with these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Where do I go from here? Thanks.

• Problem with APTonCD application

  I created a iso image using aptoncd & burned it to a dvd. now when i tried to restore, the program does not detect the dvd in the drive. It shows "Please insert a disc in the drive." and if we click "ok" it shows "E: Failed to mount the cdrom.". The dvd is in the drive itself. • Desktop goes blurry / granulated

  After few minutes using, desktop and fonts in unity-menu goes blurry. See screenshot.! In all applications (browser etc.) graphics seem to be allright. After rebooting problem disappears for few minutes. Changing the wallpaper also makes the desktop clear (for a while) but fonts are still blurry. • Problems dualbooting Ubuntu because of UEFI

  I have an X-series Asus laptop which I just bough about a month ago. I want to dualboot Ubuntu - Windows. I can easily access LiveUSB with both UEFI enabled and disabled. I heard that there were problems with UEFI, so I disabled it. After I've installed the system I couldn't access it. It just boots to Windows straight. Another unusual thing, that never happened to me before was that the partition editor wanted me to create a BIOS reserved area, which I did, but not at the beginning of the table. Any ideas how to access the Ubuntu partition? As far as I can guess both Windows and Ubuntu have to be both of the same type of boot, either Legacy or EFI. This is not the case of what I have now. So, if I reinstall Ubuntu in UEFI mode that correlates with my Windows type, will I then be able to boot into it? I have a constraint, my laptop doesn't have a CD ROM, so I cannot reinstall WIndows, nor can I move around the Windows recovery partition.   My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one? • Printing documents on HP printer very slow

  I have a strange problem with HP drivers. I have configured a HP printer 2025dn with LAN connection, on 3 pc, using the cd rom of HP driver. All works well, but sometimes for certain documents the time for printing is very slow and long. I observe during this situation, in task manager, a process called rundll32.exe loads CPU at 100%. If I kill that process the printer starts printing fast the document in the queue. I wondering the reason of this strange behaviour.

• wireless blocked after installing ubuntu 12.04

  I am using a lenovo S10-3 ideapad; had no problems with earlier version of ubuntu, only since installing 12.04. Have looked through many of the questions on the same issue and tried potential solutions but cannot seem to solve my problem. The hardware switch is in 'on' position and the wireless light comes on very briefly (2-3 sec) when the laptop starts up but then goes off and stays off. Pressing FN+F5 does nothing at all. I'd be grateful for any assistance.
