  • Virtual Windows Servers and Pagefile location [closed]

    Considering that Windows makes heavy use of the pagefile even with huge amounts of RAM available, is it not best to have this pagefile on the fastest disk possible as close to the virtual systems as possible? I'm thinking, RAM disk. Where I work, storage for VMs is out on a NAS/SAN. I'm worried that so much memory access is having to go across the network! As a side, I think its about time MS got rid of paging and told us to buy more DIMMS. UPDATE So this question has been downvoted??! Accessing a local spindle is C40,000 times slower than a DIMM, so going over the network will be even slower for hard faults. I don't know why I got the downvote, I'm certain that this is an issue unless there's some other mechanism in ESX/HyperV that manages this.

  • Virtual MS Sql Server not consuming enough CPU

    We have a Win2008 server 32 bit running as a virtual machine under ESX server. It has 6 CPU cores of 2Gz each and 4GB ram. It's running MS Sql Server 2008 R2 only. Problem: The server is heavily loaded and responds slowly. From windows taskmanagers point of view, it really looks overloaded, CPU wise. However, our external "cloud manager" says it's only using 2.5GHz worth of CPU-cycles in the cluster. I/O times looks "good". We have already tried to set the SQL servers number of working threads from 0(auto) to 256, to no effect. How to tune the VM host, guest or SQL to use all of it's alotted resources? Does it sound possible att all?

  • Keep div:hover open when changing nested select box

    This is an IE-only problem. .toolTip becomes visible when it's parent element is :hovered over. Inside of .toolTip is a select box. When the user opens the select box to make a selection, the parent element is being "un-hovered", if you will. To put it another way, when I try to select something from the dropdown, the whole thing hides itself again. I'm sure it has something to do with the way IE interprets the stylesheet, but I don't know what or where.     Using visual studio, in the editor window, I am able to navigate from the usage of a member to the line and file where it is declared by pressing F12 while the cursor is over that member by or right clicking on the member and selecting "Go To Definition". I would like to find a way to navigate from an override member to the base class member that it overrides. For example, if I have the following class with one method public class SomeClass { public virtual void TheMethod() { // do something } } An I override that method somewhere else in the project or solution similar to the following public OtherClass : SomeClass { public override void TheMethod() { // do something else } } I want to navigate from the declaration of TheMethod in OtherClass to the declaration of TheMethod in SomeClass Is there a way to do this? I've found that I can find the definition of the member in the base class by pressing Shift + F12 (Find all References) and then looking through the list occurances, this works fine most of the time, since the list isn't usually that long but it would be much better to have a way to go there directly.

    I want to run a virtual machine in my Ubuntu desktop that runs a Debian server. The purpose of this is to generate Debian packages. I have some C++ applications that were originally developed on my Ubuntu machine, and I need to (re)compile them on a Debian server in order to: build Deb packages for deployment on a Debian server make sure that the applications will definitely work on a debian server The idea is so that I can do 90% of my development on Ubuntu (where I am more comfortable), and deploy a binary package that definitely works on Debian. BTW, I am developing on Karmic Kola (Ubuntu 9.10).

    If I have 3 domains, domain1.com, domain2.com, and domain3.com, is it possible to set up a default virtual host to domains not listed? For example, if I would have: <VirtualHost 192.168.1.2 204.255.176.199> DocumentRoot /www/docs/domain1 ServerName domain1 ServerAlias host </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 192.168.1.2 204.255.176.199> DocumentRoot /www/docs/domain2 ServerName domain2 ServerAlias host </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 192.168.1.2 204.255.176.199> DocumentRoot /www/docs/everythingelse ServerName * ServerAlias host </VirtualHost> If you register a domain and point it to my server, it would default to everythingelse showing the same as domain3.     created a Virtual machine using VMware. The VM is on and i succeeded to login and work on it with the Vmware console. now i want to use the "remote desktop connection" to connect to it. i enabled the remote access on the home premium Win7 that i installed on the VM. in the Remote Desktop i entered the ip (same network (home network))). it just won't connect. i also disabled the firewall on the Win7 , but it still won;t connect. i have another VM with the same Win7 that remote desktop works fine with.

What am I missing ?

  • Maintaining a set of (virtual) windows XP machines

    I have a small set (currently 3, going to 6, not going to be more than 10) of (virtual, vmware workstation) windows XP machine's. They are similar but not exactly the same. I'm currently rolling out windows updates etc by hand: start machine 1, update, close, etc; I'd like to review the updates first before the clients can install them. Incidentally there are also other updates to be performed: changes some files on all machines, install new Java versions, etc. What's a good way of doing this automatic? I tried to search for this but things like Active Directory seem overkill to me.

  • VM's, virtual networks and my home network.

    I want to create a small lab of VM's to test out networking with. I have two PC's running VMWare and I need the VM's on these two PC's to be connected to their own LAN. I am planning on bridging the VM's into my home network. My home network and PC's are in the 192.168.0.0 range, but I want my VM's to be in 10.1.0.0. If I do it this way (Bridging the VM's on both hosts into the network) will the VM's be able to communicate? Will my home router freak out seeing two different subnets? Is there another, easier way to connect the virtual lan's on two vmware workstations together?

  • Troubles doing transparent proxy for virtual machines

    Hi iptables gurus. First here is the basic topology: Internet | Gateway | Workstation---eth0---virbr0 | +-----+-----+ | | | vm1 vm2 vm3 I need to test a traffic analyzer running on my workstation, listening on some port (say 8990) on eth0. The rule [I think] I want is "any packets leaving virbr0 going anywhere to port 80 must instead go to port 8990 on eth0". My software running on port 8990 does its own check of the NAT packet mangling to push the packets through after it inspects them. I've been banging my head on this, with different variants of: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i virbr0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT \ --to 10.0.0.10:8990 And I've tried the more generic method of using the mangle table with --set-mark and ip rule add fwmark, but I'm not getting it. I guess what's confusing me is that everything runs on the same box. Thanks for any guidance.

    Hi, My hierarchy ask me to setup a production Windows server 2008 virtual machine (HyperV) with SQL 2000 Standard Ed. installed on it. I can't find on the net much information about the relative "compatibility" of SQL2000 on WinSrv2008. Of course I found some obscure answers like : "it's impossible, it's not supported, don't do it". I already setup the machine, it's working, but... I don't know where I'm going. Do you experienced this kind of configuration ? Could you give me some advices ? Could you tell me the pros and cons ?
