Is there a way to show all tray icons in the Windows Task Bar of Windows XP, permanently?
I don't like to go over tray icons and extend them each time I need to see a specific icon.
I've red this article from howtogeek, but it didn't explain this one which is placed in the target portion when you right click on windows explorer and click properties:
%windir%\explorer.exe shell:desktop\Inbox
And why does local disk E: shows up when I have this one:
%windir%\explorer.exe shell:E:\FINAL SAVE DATA
I don't really get the code, especially the part in shell: desktop\Inbox.
What's that supposed to mean. How do I change it so that when I click on the Windows Explorer shortcut, I get to see this location:
E:\FINAL SAVE DATA
Hey all,
I'm trying to add a new printer to Windows 7, but it cannot find it. My printer is an HP 722C attached to a DLink DP-300U network adapter. I enter the ip address of the network adapter, but Windows 7 does not recognize the printer.
Any advice to get this working?
(I know that there are some questions similar to this one, but the ones I have read (and I have read more than one, did not answer my question)
I have installed, in two physically different hard drives Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.0.
I would like to have a dual boot that, if nothing was pressed, the Windows XP would start automatically.
I have read about Grub but got the impression that it wasn't possible to default the operating system to start to something other than Ubuntu.
Thanks.
Remote Assistance is enabled on a PC to-bo-controlled-remotely which is running Windows 7 Starter.
I also allowed permanent access for it on the firewall.
On the controlling Windows XP Professional laptop I enabled Offer Remote Assistance using gpedit.msc.
Both are on the same Workgroup and on the same subnet in my LAN.
But I still receive Permission Denied when I attempt to connect:
Any idea what I could be missing and how to troubleshoot this problem?
S2008 with Win7 clients via group policy; how do I configure a new network location for a network, set on the domain profile/location? I cannot see any useful options under Windows Firewall With Advanced Security.
However, the domain profile does exist under Computer Configuration - Policies - Windows Settings - Network List Manager Policies.
The Folder Options dialog in Windows XP Explorer had a File Types tab that allowed one to change a file type's icon. Windows 7 doesn't have this. Is there a way to change file icons without changing its default application?
I want to create recovery media (DVD or HDD) for my Windows 7 running on my VAIO laptop. I noticed that my HDD is already having 13.51 GB partition which is labelled as "Recovery Partition" (not visible in My Computer but visible in Computer management tool in control panel).
Can you please suggest me how to use this Recovery partition as a recovery media for my windows? I don't want to create DVDs as recovery media.
A little while ago I discovered that on Ubuntu linux one can display or conceal hidden files on demand at run-time by pressing [Ctrl-H]. This is really handy. Is there anyway this can be had on windows?
I'm guessing Windows Explorer is not amenable to this, so I'm open to 3rd party file managers provided they're open source, freeware, or cheap (in order of preference).
thanks
For some reason, Windows Desktop Search (included with Windows 7.0) now no longer shows any file types on the "Advanced Options" dialog box. Any ideas on how to fix this? WDS claims to be indexing...but I'm not sure what it's actually indexing right now.
I should also add that when I try to add a file type, nothing shows up or is ever actually added. If I login as a different user on the same system, everything appears normally.
On Windows Vista, when browsing to a network folder containing executables, Windows Explorer
seems to load all the files completely just to be able to show the executable icon (the resource monitor indicates loads of traffic during the loading of the directory)
On XP only a part of the file is loaded.
Is there a way to avoid the complete loading of these files?
Note that disabling my anti virus does not help.
I have a pretty big (~30GB) email archive (Outlook + Exchange: .ost file) and I would like to use the Outlook Search Feature (Windows Search technology).
I would like to exclude some folders from the indexing (at least the "spam" folder!) but it seems there is no option for that in the standard configurations.
Is there any other way (registries, etc) that can I accomplish this?
I am using Windows 7 and Outlook 2007.
Thanks!
I'm trying to change the default install path in Windows 7 Pro x64. I'm in the Registry Editor and in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion key. I know I need to change ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesDir (x86).
What I'm not sure about is the CommonFilesDir, CommonFilesDir (x86) and the ProgramW6432Dir. Do I need to or should I change these values to reflect the new program files directory I'm using?
I tried Googling ProgramW6432Dir and didn't get much help.
Tried using direct connection using Ethernet cable and using windows easy transfer, but no luck, also tried using ad-hoc, home group, and connecting through a router both wired and wireless but no luck, im getting a little frustrated as I need to transfer these files because im selling one of them this afternoon!
All I need to do is transfer some documents and files.
The windows 7 pc recognizes the vista pc but vista cant recognize the win 7.
I'm currently running Windows 7 RC and I'm ready to pave and reinstall on my laptop.
Are there features in Windows 7 I won't have access to if I install Server 2008 R2?
Are there applications or drivers that won't work?
I'm primarily interested in running a Server OS to support SharePoint development. (Yes, I am aware of the hackaround to install it on Win7.)
Should be an easy question for you guys.
In Windows Server 2008 it is possible to print or mail the whole server configuration.
Is there also a function like this in Windows Server 2003?
Active desktop for Windows 7 (Vista)?
Does anyone know how to install it on Windows 7\Vista?
Has anyone seen analogs? Is there such thing for mac\Linux?
Has anyone just seen any browser which can work under icons of desktop?
I come across the same problem over and over. I working on computer that is remote and it is missing graphics card drivers. Just has some default drivers that have limited resolution.
I would like to install program that will read the chipset on graphics card and tell me the values so I can go on manufacturer website and download the appropriate drivers.
Windows 7 or Windows XP application would do, if you know about any.
I understand I'll need to re-install all the applications, but will upgrading from Windows XP (32 bit) to Windows 7 (64 bit) automatically format my hard drive removing out all my stuff? Or I'll just need to install all the appls but my files (like pictures and documents) will remain on that hard drive? (Trying to figure out if I really need to get 500GB spare space anywhere to copy my data temporarily to.)
We are using the comments property for our DLLs.
In Windows XP it will show up in the file properties under "Comments".
In Windows 7 this field has been removed (or I can't find it). Is it possible to show its contents somehow?
I have an OEM Windows 7 Home Premium cd key and a Windows 7 Ultimate Retail Install disk. What procedure would I have to do to install home premium with my cd key? Do I need to edit ei.cfg?
I was using desktop running on a 64 bit Windows 7 professional, I trying to enter BIOS to check the virtualization setting, when I boot or restart my desktop, before enter Windows, I don't see any screen or instruction to entering BIOS.
I wonder is it I didn't install BIOS on the machine or? How can I check whether BIOS exist or it is come together upon installing mother board driver? Please advise.
I currently have Ubuntu and I downloaded Windows 7 because I want change to that. But when I put the installation dvd in it starts up fine but when I start to install an error message comes:
Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80000100
I would be thankful for any help
I tried using the comments feature in Windows Explorer in Windows 7, but I only get the option to add a comment only for certain file types like photos.
Is it possible to add comments to other files that I work on like Photoshop files.
I've taken a liking to the positioning of the Ubuntu titlebar buttons being on the left, and saw there is a program called Leftsider that does it on Windows 7.
However, I don't want to use a program to do that for me, and given that I'm confident with mucking around with the registry, I'd like to know where the reg entries for the Titlebar Button positions are.
Besides, doing it manually rather than automating the process gives me a chance to learn more about Windows!
