• vps running out of memory, 200MB free

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out... • What can stop IIS7 from restarting an ASP.NET app when uppdating a dll in the bin folder?

  We're running ASP.NET 2.0 on MS Server 2008 and IIS 7. During the last releases the app pool hasn't automatically been restarted after changes in the bin folder. It works like a charm on our test server but not on the live server. The site is browsable but runs with the logic of the old version of the updated dll. One of the changes we have done lately is that one of the dll:s in the bin folder consists of other dlls that have been merged with ILMerge. Interop.ADODB.dll and Interop.CDO.dll is included in the merged dll. It is the user dll of the merged dll that is updated. What can possibly hinder IIS from restarting the app pool although a file has changed in the bin folder?

• Windows Server 2003/Exchange 2007: How to setup public domain mail.foo.com to route to internal exch

  Good day, I have an internal Exchange Server 2007 and a Windows Server 2003 domain. At this point in time I have an external DNS setup (DynDNS 29.95 service) to resolve foo.com to my singular public IP address then it gets routed to external facing site. I would like to know how to setup POP on mail.foo.com and SMTP on smtp.foo.com, and more importantly, what needs to be setup in Exchange server to allow for this to happen. My end state is to send email through smtp.foo.com and receive mail on mail.foo.com. As of now, when I create a user within Exchange the default email address is [email protected], and I would like it to be [email protected]. Thank you and I appreciate the help as I am a .NET developer trying to do sys admin work, and it is MUCH harder than I have ever imagined, my hat is off to all sys admins and IT pros.

• How do I turn off caching in IIS7?

  Hello. I'm developing an ASP classic site under Windows 7 (form a queue ladies). The problem is IIS seems to be heavily making use of its cache for both static and dynamic content which really conflicts with my 'make a small change, alt-tab, hit ctrl-F5' development style. Changes made to .asp files may take two or three refreshes to show up where as changes to .js files can take 20 times as many. How do I go about turning the caching off on my development machine? • Firefox - bizarre bug

  So... this happens to my Firefox browser in like 5 days after I install it. After I reinstall it behaves normal. It doesn't display all sites like this. Same site on Explorer looks as expected. Restarting the browser doesn't seem to help. I do have installed 2 plugins or add-ons (Adblock & VideoHelper) but I'm almost sure this doesn't explain it. and I didn't messed with the settings. So... anyone?

• SEO questions about PR, Page Structure, and Other

  A couple of basic questions related to SEO. 1) If I have a site that has several different niches that I am trying to promote from. Example Web Developer broke down into section of Web Design, Graphic Design, Programming, Software for SEO purposes, would it be better to use subdomains for these main sections or use the main domain with a folder like structure? 2) Is PR different for each page of a domain or ever page has a PR of the same on that domain? Also do sub-domains have a different PR? 3) When entering a hugely over saturated niche such as web-design, is it even possible to compete with the big sites that have been ranked on google #1 page for years? 4) Lastly, I have read about how important titles, link anchors, and headings are for SEO and how content is the most important. So left's say we are building a standard header, body, sidebar, footer page. In the the actual markup, would it be better to make sure the main content comes before the sidebar on the page or does this probably not make a difference? 5) I seen mentioned in another answer here that microformats can help with SEO, is there any fact behind this?   I write web-based software and simple website ("Home", "Who we are", "Contact"). For a simple website I'm using a covered GPL v3 framework. The user surf the website, send an email, take info, etc. I repeat: simple website, not a Joomla or Wordpress. 1) Will the website be covered with the GPL? I don't modify the framework. I'm using his classes in other classes... (OOP). 2) For the point 1, if yes, do I need to add (e.g. in the footer) name of framework and his link? 3) I must permit download of entire website to study code (nothing that a programmer has interest in)? E.g. placing it in Github? 4) If 2 is NO, how you can "understand" that we use that framework? In effect no php lines are exposed to the browser... You cannot understand that when you push "Send email" the site is calling $this->send($email). If you write me an email "Are you using XXX framework"? I can answer NO.

• How to configure what certificates can be issued using Web Enrollment in Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise?

  I have a CA installed on of my Windows Servers in a small farm of systems. I've installed the Certification Authority Web Enrollment and Certificate Enrollment Web Service roles on the CA. I want to issue a Computer certificate to a computer not jointed to my domain. The user attempting web enrollment has domain credentials. The user was able to navigate to https://myServerHostname/certsrv and request a User certificate successfully. However, the user needs a Computer cert as well. From the certsrv site, the user tried the following: Advanced Certificate Request Create and Submit a Request to this CA However, the Computer certificate template is not available under the Certificate Template heading. He is only seeing "User" and "Basic EFS". How do I configure the CA to allow him to request a Computer cert for his system?

• Serve mirrored (static) web-page with original headers

  I have a dynamic webpage which I want to create a "frozen" copy of. Typically I would do something like wget -m http://example.com, and then put the files in the document root of the web-server. This site however has some dynamic content, including dynamically generated images, for instance http://example.com/company/123/logo This means that in order to mirror the page, I need to Save whatever headers the server currently serves for each URL. This can be done using the wget option --save-headers. Serve the static pages and serve the proper headers for each file. (This I have no idea of how to do.) What is the best way to solve this? Any suggestions are welcome.

• What firewall ports do I need to open when using FTPS?

  I need to access an ftps server (vsftpd) on a vendor's site. The vendor has a firewall in front of the ftps server and I have a firewall in front of my ftps client. I understand that ports 990, 991 and maybe 989 need to be opened up for control traffic. When looking at it from the vendor's firewall perspective, should these ports be opened up for both inbound and outbound traffic? What about ports for the DATA channel? Do I have to open all ports above 1000? And should I do it for both inbound and outbound traffic? TIA for your help.

• Windows Azure v1.7 Spring Release Today&ndash;New Management Dashboard

  Today, Microsoft will be publicly releasing a new version of Azure for public consumption.  The web conference, at http://www.meetwindowsazure.com will be airing at 1 PM PST.  They have already released an update to the Service Dashboard that can be accessed by going to http://manage.windowsazure.com.  I have some images of the new dashboard here that I have gathered and removed any PII from.  Let me know what you think! Tutorial The first thing you get after signing in is the tutorial: Landing After the tutorial completes, you get a screen with services that are active on your account on the left, and a list of ALL services (db/blob/SQL Azure) on the right.  I like the quick access to services across any of my subscriptions: Service Information These are images from a running web site with several roles.  I love how easy they have made many of the features: SQL Azure They have given some great quick functionality for looking at your DB information: Storage Here is the basic information that they give you for any storage accounts you have: Adding Services Super quick and easy to add services with the new UI: Conclusion I am EXCITED!  As you may have seen in the left side of my blog, I am an MCPD in Azure Development, and I must say that I am excited to see Microsoft moving forward with the technology and not letting it stagnate.  After as much as I have fought the other Azure dashboard, I like the friendliness and fluidity of this one. The important thing to note about ALL of the images above: this is HTML, not Silverlight.  The responsiveness is FAST on all of the actions I completed, and I believe that this is a big step forward for Azure… So, what do you think?

• Wireless connection disconnects and reconnects with a Netgear WNA1000

  Ever since I made the permanent switch from Vista to Ubuntu i've had wireless connectivity problems. From watching the network manager when it disconnects it seems like it turns off the receiver for some reason. Could it be bad drivers? I used their install software and the site doesn't really offer driver downloads. The adapter is a Netgear WNA1000 if memory serves, and I don't know much about the router except that it's a Motorola Surfboard. • Is there a way to save MS Word document as HTML w/o the ms proprietary stuff?

  So normally I wouldn't use this feature ("Save as Web Page") but I have large documents from clients they just want put on their site as HTML, and formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time. I have tried "save as webpage" in Word 2007, but it produces all sorts of bad stuff. To wit: <b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'> <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> as well as a large block of XML formatting info: <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:DocumentProperties> <o:Subject> </o:Subject> <o:Author> </o:Author> <o:Keywords> </o:Keywords> ... As I said, formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time, but the way MS exports currently just has too much cruft. Is there a way to export MS Word doc as html without all this?

• Google Chrome doesn't stay logged in to Google sites when using pinned tabs

  Despite checking "stay logged in" or the like on Gmail or Docs, Chrome refuses to do so when I close and re-open it with Google sites pinned. If they're not pinned, it works fine. The "Clear cookies and other site and plug-in data when I close my browser" checkbox in the settings is not checked, and I don't have any cookie exceptions. All settings are defaults. Nor is the incognito mode being used. This occurs on all my computers using Chrome. I have deleted my cookies file (%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cookies) with no effect (other than losing the logins that ordinarly work fine). Of note is that when I relaunch Chrome with Gmail pinned and it asks me to log in, doing so once will fail (does nothing; no errors), then it will work on the second attempt. If I refresh the window before doing so, it will work on the first attempt.

  This isn't really a programmer-specific question, but I'm not sure of a more appropriate place, and I think the users of this site are best able to answer the question in the context of programmers. Relocating to the US seems fairly common in the programming industry. I live in the UK, and maybe one day, I might do it too. So, if that day comes - how would you go about comparing job offers? Benefits are fairly easy to compare, but given the differences in cost of living, how would you go about comparing salaries and the quality of living you'll have? In a country where the cost of living is lower, you might be able to accept a lower salary (based on exchange rate) and still have the same quality of living. But what can you do to ensure this? In some cases, you may even take a "pay rise" in terms of exchange rate, but end up far worse off. How can you compare job offers across different countries to get an idea of the salary you would need in order to not feel you've gone "backwards"?

• How to host ASP.NET application externally?

  I have an ASP.NET application that I can get to locally by going to 192.168.1.102:81/TestApp. I would like to host the application externally by going to domain.com:81/TestApp (I already have my domain pointing to my router and this works fine - I have apache running on port 80 on another server). I modified the router settings to point any request coming through port 81 to 192.168.1.102. I am still having trouble accessing the ASP.NET site (I get the error message that "This link appears to be broken"). Am I missing something? How can I redirect domain.com:81/TestApp to my ASP.NET application? Thanks.

• Ubuntu 11.10 w/ Cinnamon - Icons are gone and pictures do not display

  I'm new on this site and new to using Ubuntu and all. I currently have Ubuntu 11.10 and Cinnamon along with it. I've recently downloaded only a few applications, like the Adobe shockwave as well as a few games. After the downloads, the icons for the windows (the close, minimize, and maximize) are nothing but streaks of colours, and now just plain black, picture previews in my picture folder is gone, some icons on the panels are missing, and icons in the control center are gone. I'm sure more are gone, but that's the ones that I see often. I'm not sure what caused this to happen?? Please get back to me soon! I'm worried about what has happened. ): This is my only laptop to get online. I have no other way besides the library but that takes too long.. EDIT: Okay, I had asked my sister for some help and she helped me restore my minimize, maximize, and close button but I still haven't figured out how to show the icons in the cinnamon dock (which I have set at the top of the window) and how to have my pictures show up again. All of my pictures are just blank and I can't even preview them. They still have their file names but that is it. I'm not sure what has happened. I haven't downloaded any new apps as of the new edit.

• How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

  I have a Samsung Series 7 with the Radeon 6750M switchable graphics. The ATI software lets you force programs to use the dedicated card. However, I'm not convinced it is actually ever using it, as the frame rates on some non-taxing games (Portal, TF2) are merely OK. To make matters worse, it looks like the ATI Catalyst Control has vanished from my laptop. To make it even worse, you can't download the driver and ATI CCC from ATI's site, you need to download it from Samsung, and the ZIP they provide is corrupted. How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

• Google Chrome in Incognito Mode still logging visits history

  I am using Incognito Mode and today I have noticed that when I frequently visit some site in that mode browser logs it and even on not incognito mode it autofills in address bar making Incognito mode useless in my case. Another fun thing is that the item is not in History so I can't manually remove it. Couldn't find anything in Settings. Why is this happening? BTW, instant search is disabled in my case. • Is it worth moving from Microsoft tech to Linux, NodeJS & other open source frameworks to save money for a start-up?

  I am currently getting involved in a startup, I am the only developer involved at the moment, and the other guys are leaving all the tech decisions up to me at the moment. For my day job I work at a software house that uses Microsoft tech on a day to day basis, we utilise .NET, SqlServer, Windows Server etc. However, I realise that as a startup we need to keep costs down, and after having a brief look at the cost of hosting for Windows I was shocked to see some of the prices for a dedicated server. The cheapest I found was £100 a month. Also if the business needs to scale in the future and we end up needing multiple servers, we could end up shelling out £10's of £000's a year in SQL Server / Windows Server licenses etc. I then had a quick look at the price of Linux hosting for a dedicated server and saw the price was waaaaaay lower than windows hosting. One place was offering a machine with 2 cores for less than £20 a month. This got me thinking maybe the way to go is open source on Linux. As I write a lot of Javascript at work (I'm working on a single page backbone app at the moment), I thought maybe NodeJS and a web framework like Express would be cool to use. I then thought that instead of using SQL why not use an open source NoSQL database like MongoDB, which has great support on NodeJS? My only concern is that some of the work the application is going to do is going to be dynamically building images and various other image related stuff, i.e. stuff that is quite CPU heavy - so I'm thinking of maybe writing anything CPU heavy in C++ and consuming it as a module in Node. That's the background - but basically is Linux a good match for: Hosting a NodeJS/Express site? Compiling C++ node modules? Using a NoSQL DB like MongoDB? And is it a good idea to move to these unfamiliar technologies to save money?

• How do I know if my Xeon Processor supports hardware virtualisation?

  I've been scouring the net (mainly the wikipaedia lists and intel's site. I even pulled out the datasheet for my processor) but I can't seem to answer this question. Does my Xeon support hardware virtualisation? The processor in question is a: "Nocona" (standard-voltage, 90 nm) 2800MHz. • Badwidth-Hogging Linux Server Causing Trouble

  We have a Linux server (2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu) that's misbehaving on a client site, gobbling up an entirely unacceptable percentage of the client's bandwidth, and we're trying to figure out what the heck it's doing. And the guy who had the sysadmin skillset has yet to be replaced. We're at a loss for what could be causing all that network traffic, and need to figure it out SOON. What log files should I be looking at to find this information? What analysis tools would you recommend for this task? Please note that I'm not looking for a tool that will allow me to analyze FUTURE traffic. The client is on the verge of shutting the machine off entirely; I need to figure out what it's been doing with the data I already have, if that's at all possible. My thanks in advance for helping a development monkey play sysadmin.

• ADO and Two Way Storage Tiering

  Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 We get asked the following question about Automatic Data Optimization (ADO) storage tiering quite a bit. Can you tier back to the original location if the data gets hot again? The answer is yes but not with standard Automatic Data Optimization policies, at least not reliably. That's not how ADO is meant to operate. ADO is meant to mirror a traditional view of Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) where data will be very volatile when first created, will become less active or cool, and then will eventually cease to be accessed at all (i.e. cold). I think the reason this question gets asked is because customers realize that many of their business processes are cyclical and the thinking goes that those segments that only get used during month end or year-end cycles could sit on lower cost storage when not being used. Unfortunately this doesn't fit very well with the ADO storage tiering model. ADO storage tiering is based on the amount of free and used space in the source tablespace. There are two parameters that control this behavior, TBS_PERCENT_USED and TBS_PERCENT_FREE. When the space in the tablespace exceeds the TBS_PERCENT_USED value then segments specified in storage tiering clause(s) can be moved until the percent of free space reaches the TBS_PERCENT_FREE value. It is worth mentioning that no checks are made for available space in the target tablespace. Now, it is certainly possible to create custom functions to control storage tiering, but this can get complicated. The biggest problem is insuring that there is enough space to move the segment back to tier 1 storage, assuming that that's the goal. This isn't as much of a problem when moving from tier 1 to tier 2 storage because there is typically more tier 2 storage available. At least that's the premise since it is supposed to be less costly, lower performing and higher capacity storage. In either case though, if there isn't enough space then the operation fails. In the case of a customized function, the question becomes do you attempt to free the space so the move can be made or do you just stop and return false so that the move cannot take place? This is really the crux of the issue. Once you cross into this territory you're really going to have to implement two-way hierarchical storage and the whole point of ADO was to provide automatic storage tiering.
