• Can learning a new language (Human not programming) help your career?

  I was wondering if anyone had any experience of learning a new language (a human language not a programming one) and whether is has helped you get ahead in your career. I'm assuming that the new language is one other than English which I think is fairly essential to programming as most programming resources seem to be english. The reason I ask is I speak Arabic and was told that it would give me an edge when I was looking for jobs, and yet so far in my current job it's completely irrelevant and in my last job I had it was used but I didn't get any special "appreciation" for speaking it.

• Where is the best place to start learning Java Socket Programming?

  I wish to create a Java Socket server which can be connected to using Javascript and/or Flash. I have experience in Connecting to sockets in flash, and using a comet like system in Ajax. I wish to make a live communication system, which will intale multiple connections to the server from various clients, needing almost instant communication between peers. I coded a system like this in PHP but I want to convert it to Java, simply because I don't want the PHP engine to be tied up on this Sever, as it serves all the web stuff normally on the site, and i've heard is more powerful for this sort of thing. Just looking for advice on where I can start learning how to write this sort of system using Java? I have previous coding experience in PHP, Javascript, Adobe Air and AS3 if That helps?

Now, if an object contains another object and that object links back to the original object, it should not follow that object further down the chain. However, my logic seems to have a flaw as I still get stuck in an infinite loop. Does anyone know why this is happening?

• WinForms TabControl: How to avoid tab-rendering on DrawMode=OwnerDrawFixed?

  I extended the (WindowsForms) built-in TabControl in order to implement closing tabs right on the tab itself ("x" image on the right like in Webbrowsers). The inherited control renders the text and images. Also, it uses visual styles on hover etc. All works very well, but I have one problem I can't solve. When the tabs are rendered, I cannot avoid that the Control paints the tabs another time as seen in this screenshot: That's a problem for two reasons: It looks ugly on the selected tab I'd like to increase the tabs' width because the current width doesn't take account of the "x" image on the right Any idea how to solve this?

• How to avoid this very heavy query that slows down the application?

  Hi, We have a web application running in a production enviroment and at some point the client complained about how slow the application got. When we checked what was going on with the application and the database we discover this "precious" query that was being executed by several users at the same time (thus inflicting an extremely high load on the database server): SELECT NULL AS table_cat, o.owner AS table_schem, o.object_name AS table_name, o.object_type AS table_type, NULL AS remarks FROM all_objects o WHERE o.owner LIKE :1 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_0" AND o.object_name LIKE :2 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_1" AND o.object_type IN(:"SYS_B_2", :"SYS_B_3") ORDER BY table_type, table_schem, table_name Our application does not execute this query, I believe it is an Hibernate internal query. I've found little information on why Hibernate does this extremely heavy query, so any help in how to avoid it very much appreciated! The production enviroment information: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 (Tikanga), JDK 1.5, web container OC4J (whitin Oracle Application Server), Oracle Database 10.1.0.4, JDBC Driver for JDK 1.2 and 1.3, Hibernate version 3.2.6.ga, connection pool library C3P0 version 0.9.1. • How to avoid Cartesian product in an INNER JOIN query?

  I have 6 tables, let's call them a,b,c,d,e,f. Now I want to search all the colums (except the ID columns) of all tables for a certain word, let's say 'Joe'. What I did was, I made INNER JOINS over all the tables and then used LIKE to search the columns. INNER JOIN ... ON INNER JOIN ... ON.......etc. WHERE a.firstname ~* 'Joe' OR a.lastname ~* 'Joe' OR b.favorite_food ~* 'Joe' OR c.job ~* 'Joe'.......etc. The results are correct, I get all the colums I was looking for. But I also get some kind of cartesian product, I get 2 or more lines with almost the same results. How can i avoid this? I want so have each line only once, since the results should appear on a web search.

  I sometimes write SELECTs on the form: SELECT a.col1+b.col2*c.col4 as calc_col1, a.col1+b.col2*c.col4 + xxx as calc_col1_PLUS_MORE FROM .... INNER JOIN ... ON a.col1+b.col2*c.col4 < d.some_threshold WHERE a.col1+b.col2*c.col4 > 0 When the calculations get rather involved and used up to 3-5 times within the same SELECT, I would really like to refactor that out in a function or similar in order to 1) hopefully improve performance / make use of cache 2) avoid forgetting to update one of the 4 calculations when I at a later stage realize I need to change the calculation. I usually have these selects within SPs. Any ideas?

  I am interested in applying dependency injection to my current project, which makes use of the MVC pattern. My controllers will call the models and therefore will need to inject the dependencies into the models. To do this, the controller must have the dependencies (such as a database object) in the first place. The controller doesn't need to make use of some of these dependencies (such as the database object), so I feel that it shouldn't be given this dependency. However, it has to have these dependencies if it is to inject them into the model objects. How can I avoid having dependencies injected into an object just so that it can pass them on? Doing so feels wrong and can result in many dependencies being injected into an object. Edit: I am using PHP.

Then, I have my MainForm, which has UserControl 'B' on it. Each time I do a build or run, the Text property of UserControl 'A' is reset to its default value. I suppose this is because since I am doing a rebuild, it rebuilds both UserControl 'A' and 'B', thus causing the problem. How can I go about a better approach to design pattern to avoid this type of behavior when working with tightly bound controls and forms in a application?

• Is it possible to avoid downloading song up to the supplied position using SoundManager2?

  I'm using the SoundManager2 JavaScript SDK on a site that streams synchronized audio from SoundCloud to multiple clients simultaneously. When a new user loads the page, the audio is loaded, and a position parameter is set to specify where playback should begin. The problem arises when the track is really long (say 60 minutes), and the current track position is substantially far into the track (e.g. 30 minutes). When this is the case, it takes a really long time before playback begins because the track has to download/buffer up to the current position. Is there a way to avoid downloading the 30 minutes of audio that I don't need?

Scenario 1: To avoid piracy, I want to include some piece of code, whose job is sending both IMEI and Serial number of IPhone. Scenario 2: At server side, I've a database, which has a list of both IMEI and Serial No info. Here I wanna validate both IMEI and Serial numbers. • Avoid hourglass mouse cursor when calling a web-service?

  I don't know if this is a general web-services issue or just my specific scenario, which is a WPF application with a DispatcherTimer calling a web-service method. Whenever the timer is called, the mouse cursor automatically changes to an hourglass cursor. The processing of the call is very short and happens every 3 seconds, so the user experience is that every 3 seconds the mouse filckers as an hourglass for a split-second and then goes back to the normal cursor representation. How can I avoid this inconvenience? Thanks.

• Embedded C++, any tips to avoid a local thats only used to return a value on the stack?

  I have a local that's only used for the purposes of checking the result from another function and passing it on if it meets certain criteria. Most of the time, that criteria will never be met. Is there any way I can avoid this "extra" local? I only have about 1MB of storage for my binary, and I have several thousand function calls that follow this pattern. I know it's a minor thing, but if there's a better pattern I'd love to know! Original I had myJson = db.StringProperty() it complained the json i had was to long and StringProperty had a limit of around 500 chars. Sugesting to use TextProperty instead.
