It's not a cool feature, but it's useful and relatively less known. An example: As i wrote long ago, you should never use kill -9 because often the normal kill is intercepted by the application and it starts to do some clean up tasks first before really stopping the process. • 2d engine with WebGL

  I am currently developing a HTML5 canvas game with a sprite-based 2d engine. The engine is working well so far, but now I thought that I could maybe add some cool graphic effects when I would re-implement the whole engine with WebGL. The whole graphic engine would stay strictly two-dimensional (think of it as a 3d world where the z coordinate of all vertices is 0.0). What I hope to gain from this is the ability to use pixel shaders to create special effects. I also think that the performance could improve. What do you think about that plan?

  I have read some of the things posted here and I keep reading about people running stuff like /foldername/executable -cmd NAME (was reading about a programmer using Eclipse, so he was testing something he made) I don't see things like that when I run things here (Ubuntu 12.04) because of the launcher and the Ubuntu button at the very top. That and Eclipse indigo has a button for running and testing things it makes. Just asking how and why it's common? (assuming it's the Terminal[Ctrl+alt+T] but I'm not sure)

I did find some useful informations that aren't available in a quick, light mobile format and I added to my site: teathers' programming, pharmacy shops open at night, twitter account embedding... have you got any other suggestion? I was thinking about facebook oauth to add some "social" feel, but I woluld like to avoid cloning fb information/features, just add some other cool addictive thing. I 'm using php for dynamic contents.

  Hi everyone, First of all, Happy New Year! I am thinking about making my blog accessible and enjoyable on mobile devices (as many handsets as possible). I am using Wordpress 3.0.4. What I've found is couple of cool plugins like WPTouch (for touch enabled devices), The Wordpress Mobile Edition and the Wordpress Mobile Pack. I am wondering which one is the best to use if I can use only one. If I can use more or (even all these three) are they compatible? Does anyone have any experiences in this topic? • How can I disable as much "flair" as possible in Unity?

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 from a fresh install on a somewhat aged computer, so I have some speed problems. But since I do want to use the new cool way to work with things that Unity introduces I do not want to fiddle with getting another desktop environment. My idea is to disable as much flair as possible, but there are tonnes of options that I do not understand or have the time to read up on when I launch CompizConfig Settings Manager. Which of these could safely be disabled? Are there other places where performance could be gained by disabling things? So how can I make the whole thing a little more snappy?

To speak for myself, I use Ubuntu and Kubuntu (it varies between those two Linux distributions), because it is easy to get stuff done with, has all the development tools I need, is fast, stable and safe. And I think I would never make it without the UNIX utilities anymore.

• Connecting 2 PCs using USB-to-USB (male-male) cable

Is there any Ubuntu equivalent to this? I would really love to SSH into my Ubuntu server via my Ubuntu laptop, just by connecting one end of the male USB to my laptop, and another end of the male USB to my server. I know I can always SSH into my server via the network, but then in this case of mine, there are cases the server is inside a secluded-secured network server room, and the only way for me to check things out is to go into the server room and open the keyboard console and monitor there. But, if I can just bring my laptop inside and connect to the USB there, then that would be cool. Any idea guys?

• Problems migrating software RAID 5 to new server (linux)

  I have a CentOS setup with sw RAID5 that holds my data. Well, the server died, so I bought another box to migrate my drives to. Only thing is, I cannot get the RAID array rebuilt (not even sure it needs rebuilding, might just need the /dev/md0 mapping created... but I don't even know how to determine what I need!) Some details: RAID5 software (used mdadm) 4x 250GB drives (2 are SATA, 2 are EIDE -- would this matter? It worked fine in the other box...) latest CentOS distro built using mdadm I've got a decent amount of experience with standard linux stuff, but the hardware level stuff runs me in circles. I've spent some time googling and elsewhere here on SF, so please be kind for my newbie questions :). My question is this: how can I diagnose the problem? For all I know, I'm using the wrong device blocks when I try to rebuild the array, but I can't find the command to display only the devices that have some physical attachment. Is there some simple way for me to run mdadm, having it scan over all my physical drives, and say "hey, drives 2,5,6,7 are a software array, want me to mount it?" I basically just took the drives from my old box and put it into my new one. They show up in the BIOS. What steps do I need to take in order to get the array up, running, and mounted? • Where to get glib-config for Kubuntu?

  I'm trying to compile Midnight Commander on a KUbuntu 9.10 (Karmic) box with no root access. I've set up a directory under $HOME, downloaded the mc source package and various stuff required for building, such as autotools. I've unpacked the CONTENTS of all those packages into this working directory such that I have the usual ./usr, ./lib, ./etc hierarchy. I manage to get configure through a lot of tests, but I can't seem to fool it into finding glib. checking for glib-2.0... checking for glib-config... no checking for glib12-config... no checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.6... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: Test for glib failed. GNU Midnight Commander requires glib 1.2.6 or above. My system has glib installed: /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.2200.3 ... and I've also downloaded and unpacked the glib package into my working directory: libglib2.0-0_2.22.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb libglib2.0-dev_2.22.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb ... but still the elusive glib-config is nowhere to be found. It's not in any debian package for Karmic, either. So I'd appreciate any help getting over this hurdle. Please note, again, that I don't have root, so I can't just merrily apt-get stuff.

• Fedora-13 not detecting USB HDD enclosure (with HDD)

  I recently purchased this enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Inland-2-5-Inc.../dp/B003SZ2Y12 and this HDD: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barrac...3811667&sr=8-1 Now, I let my brother in law use the enclosure with his 160GB disk to back some stuff up. He then gave me that disk in my enclosure and I backed up my computer and my fiances computer. So...obviously, i had no problem mounting that disk. I plan on keeping this disk as my "natural disaster backup" (in case my apartment building burns down, i still have that disk with my stuff backed up). I want to use the 1.5T disk as my regular/more frequent backup device, but it doesn't seem to be mounting to my F-13 machine. I searched through this forum and found someone advising to run the following: # mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt this is the output i get when I run that: mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is mounted on /boot Thing is, shouldn't this disk automatically mount just like the LAST disk in the same enclosure with the same USB cable and power supply? Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

• NRPE unable to read output, but why?

  I have this problem with NRPE, all the stuff I've found so far on the net seems to point me at things I've already tried. # /usr/local/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H nrpeclient gives NRPE v2.12 as expected. Running the command by hand (as defined in nrpe.cfg on "nrpeclient", gives the expected response nrpe.cfg: command[check_openmanage]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/additional/check_openmanage -s -e -b ctrl_driver=0 bat_charge "Expected response" But if I try to run the command from the Nagios server I get the following: # /usr/local/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H comxps -c check_openmanage NRPE: Unable to read output Can anyone think of anywhere else I might have made a mistake with this? I've done the same thing on multiple other servers with no problem. The only difference I can think of with this is that this box is RHEL 5 based, whereas the others are RHEL 4 based. Those two bits above that I've tested are the what most people seem to suggest when people have had this problem. I should mention that I get a weird error in the logs when I restart nrpe: nrpe[14534]: Unable to open config file '/usr/local/nagios/etc/nrpe.cfg' for reading nrpe[14534]: Continuing with errors... nrpe[14535]: Starting up daemon nrpe[14535]: Warning: Daemon is configured to accept command arguments from clients! nrpe[14535]: Listening for connections on port 5666 nrpe[14535]: Allowing connections from: bodbck,combck,nam-bck Even though, it's plainly reading that /usr/local/nagios/etc/nrpe.cfg file to get the stuff it's talking about further down..
