Which plugin framework to use for native C++/Win32

Hi everybody. I have an extensible product that allows 3rd party developers to extend it. The aspects that can be extended are documented and interfaces are provided in the SDK. Currently, I'm using COM and I'm getting pretty comfortable with it. I especially like the ability to provide interface versioning in a unified manner. I consider it to be a requirement because you never know what you're gonna need in the future. Just to be precise, here's an example. Let's suppose I have an interface representing a particular feature: class IFeature { public: virtual void DoFeatureTask() = 0; }; Then after the interface is already documented (and someone may have used it in the plugin code) I'm realizing, I need more from this feature. Maybe, there is an option I need to provide. I just define the second version: class IFeature2 { public: virtual void DoFeatureTask(int theOption) = 0; }; I don't mean I intend to have lots of versions. But it just may happen. In COM, because every interface is associated with a GUID, I can query a preferred implementation, determine its presence, and, finally, fall back to a legacy one. But after glancing through C++/COM-related questions, I noticed many recommendations against COM. So maybe it's not the best choice and I'm just too old-school. Can you advise on an alternative?

Handle window scroll event in greasemonkey script

Hi. I need some advice. I have a web page and want to extend it's functionality with greasemonkey script and firefox. When page has loaded I need run custom function during user's page scrolling (with mouse whell or scrollbar). I want show some div block when user scrolling down and hide it when he scrolling to the top. But I met some problem - I couldn't assign event handler to the onscroll event. I use next part of the code: function showFixedBlock(){ ... } function onScrollStart(){ ... showFixedBlock(); ... } window.onscroll = onScrollStart; I test this piece of code on my test html page and it works, but when I copy it into greasemonkey, script doesn't work. Should I assign onscroll event handler during page loading? As I know greasemonkey execute it's scripts when page has loaded? Is it the reason of the problem? Is there some additional requirments to handle 'onscroll' event? How can I do that? Thanks.

Encapsulating user input of data for a class (C++)

For an assignment I've made a simple C++ program that uses a superclass (Student) and two subclasses (CourseStudent and ResearchStudent) to store a list of students and print out their details, with different details shown for the two different types of students (using overriding of the display() method from Student). My question is about how the program collects input from the user of things like the student name, ID number, unit and fee information (for a course student) and research information (for research students): My implementation has the prompting for user input and the collecting of that input handled within the classes themselves. The reasoning behind this was that each class knows what kind of input it needs, so it makes sense to me to have it know how to ask for it (given an ostream through which to ask and an istream to collect the input from). My lecturer says that the prompting and input should all be handled in the main program, which seems to me somewhat messier, and would make it trickier to extend the program to handle different types of students. I am considering, as a compromise, to make a helper class that handles the prompting and collection of user input for each type of Student, which could then be called on by the main program. The advantage of this would be that the student classes don't have as much in them (so they're cleaner), but also they can be bundled with the helper classes if the input functionality is required. This also means more classes of Student could be added without having to make major changes to the main program, as long as helper classes are provided for these new classes. Also the helper class could be swapped for an alternative language version without having to make any changes to the class itself. What are the major advantages and disadvantages of the three different options for user input (fully encapsulated, helper class or in the main program)?

How can i change a jquery plugin's option value with my value?

I have just jquery pagination plugin to work... But what happens is when i click page number 2 i get the first page and when i click 3 i get second page and so on.... My initial page my current page value changes to 0 instead 1 this causes the problem... Applying fine-grained security to an existing application

I've inherited a reasonably large and complex ASP.NET MVC3 web application using EF Code First on SQL Server. It uses ASP.NET Membership roles with database authentication. The controller actions are secured with attributes derived from AuthorizeAttribute that map roles to actions. There are extension methods for the finer points, such as showing a particular widget to particular roles. This is works great and I have a good understanding of the current security model. I've been asked to provide finer grained security at the data level. For example a 'Customer' user can only see data (throughout the database) associated with themselves and not other Customers. The problem is that 'Customer' is only 1 of 5 different types with their own specific restrictions (each of the 9 roles is one of these 5 types). The best thing I can think of is to go through all the data repositories and extend each and every LINQ statements/query with a filter for every user type. Even if I had time for that it doesn't seem like the most elegant way. Any suggestions? I really don't know where to start with this so anything could be helpful. Many thanks.

Jquery grid overlay in wordpress

I am adding this simple plugin that I have working in a static html site, and am trying to add it to a wordpress development site based off of 960 gs. Ember nested route. Load more models

I use dynamic part to access one elem from a collection children/1. But i cant load more models to a nested resource. In my example i want to populate all the toys for a select, not just list the toys of the child. How to associate application with existing file types using WiX installer?

I do not want to be the default handler for .jpg, I would just like to extend the "Open with" menu with a link to my app. I see HKCR\.jpg\OpenWithList\ and HKCR\.jpg\OpenWithProgIds\ in the registry but I am not sure whether to write to these and how to do it correctly with WiX. Should I use something like this? <ProgId Id='??what here?' Flash SWF not initializing until visible - can I force them to initialize?

I have an application that needs to render about 100 flash graphs (as well as other DOM stuff) in a series of rows that vertically extend many times beyond the current visible window - in other words, the users have to scroll down see see all the different graphs. This application is also dynamic and when a user changes a value in the DOM (anywhere on the page) it will need to propagate that change to all the Flash graphs at the same time. So I setup all the externalInterface callbacks and was careful to not let any JS start going until the ever-so-important "flashIsReady" call and...it worked great until I tried to update() the existing swf's with new data. Here was the behavior: - All the swfs load (initially) in both IE/Fox = good. - Updating swfs with new content works in IE but not in Fox = not good - Updating swfs with new content works in Fox --ONLY IF-- I scrolled down to the bottom of the page, then back to the top -- BEFORE -- I triggered an update(). So then I started tracing out each time a swf called the JS to say "flash is ready" and I realized, Firfox only renders swfs as they become visible. And To be honest - that's fine and actually, I am pretty sure that IE does this too. But the problem is that not only does Firefox not initialize the swf, Firefox doesn't even acknowledge the swf exists (expect for after onload) if it has not yet been visible. And the proof is that you get JS errors saying: "[FlashDOMID].FlashMethod is not a function". However, scroll down a little, wait until its visible and suddenly the trace starts lighting up "Flash Ready", "Flash Ready", "Flash Ready" and once they are all ready, everything works fine. Someone told me that FF does not init swf's until visible - can I force it? I can post code if you need...but its pretty heavy (hard to strip out the relevant from the rest) and I would like to avoid it (for your sakes) if possible. The question is simple - have you had this happen and if so, did you find a solution? Does anyone now how to force a not-yet-visible swf to initialize? Thanks guys.

Making a jQuery plugin to feed Tumblr to site

I have some experience with PHP and a little with JS but I'm far from anything proficient. I'm trying to make a jQuery plugin for my site that I can call in my HTML via something like this: $('.new').tumble({username: "tylor", count: 9}); Which would basically put the Tumblr list the code should make into the DIV with class 'new' in this case. Here is my code so far; the problem seems to be how to get it to pick up class/id from the original call (in the HTML) and use that in the jQuery. Flex/Actionscript image display problem.

I'm trying to extend the Image class but hit a problem that I can't get past. I have a private image (img) that loads an image and a function that takes that image and copies it onto the parent. The debug function "copyit2" displays the image fine (so I know it's loaded OK). But the function "copyit" doesn't work - it just displays a white rectangle. I can't see how to make copyit work so that the original image is copied to the BitmapData and then subsequenty copied onto the parent? (The idea is to do some processing on the Bitmap data before it is displayed, although this isn't shown here to keep the example simple.) I suspect it is something to do with the security of loading images, but I'm loading it from the same server as the application is run from - so this shouldn't be a problem? Android -- SDK/IDE Layout Bug (w/Custom Layouts)??

Hello all, Can someone tell me if this is a bug in the SDK/IDE: Any custom or extended layout I add to my layout XML causes the IDE to ignore the fact that there are any child views of that layout (they just disappear from the outline view/window), thus making them uneditable via the properties view/window. (I need to extend a layout to make onSetAlpha() public) FYI: I'm developing for Android 1.5 and up, using all the latest plug-ins/updates in Eclipse Here is a simple example of a layout XML and the extended Layout that causes this error. I am trying to write xsd type schema for an element that has a custom type to include addition attributes to extend a base type. How to perform Rails model validation checks within model but outside of filters using ledermann-rails-settings and extensions

Background I'm using ledermann-rails-settings (https://github.com/ledermann/rails-settings) on a Rails 2/3 project to extend virtually the model with certain attributes that don't necessarily need to be placed into the DB in a wide table and it's working out swimmingly for our needs. An additional reason I chose this Gem is because of the post How to create a form for the rails-settings plugin which ties ledermann-rails-settings more closely to the model for the purpose of clean form_for usage for administrator GUI support. It's a perfect solution for addressing form_for support although... Something that I'm running into now though is properly validating the dynamic getters/setters before being passed to the ledermann-rails-settings module. At the moment they are saved immediately, regardless if the model validation has actually fired - I can see through script/console that validation errors are being raised. Example For instance I would like to validate that the attribute :foo is within the range of 0..100 for decimal usage (or even a regex). I've found that with the previous post that I can use standard Rails validators (surprise, surprise) but I want to halt on actually saving any values until those are addressed - ensure that the user of the GUI has given 61.43 as a numerical value. I'm trying to debug someone else's code and having trouble figuring out what's wrong. When I run rake, one of the errors I get is: 2) Error: test_math(TestRubyUnits): NoMethodError: undefined method `unit_sin' for CMath:Module /home/user/ruby-units/lib/ruby_units/math.rb:21:in `sin' This is the function that calls the method: assert_equal Math.sin(pi), Math.sin("180 deg".unit) And this is what the class looks like: module Math alias unit_sin sin def sin(n) Unit === n ? unit_sin(n.to('radian').scalar) : unit_sin(n) end alias unit_cos cos def cos(n) Unit === n ? unit_cos(n.to('radian').scalar) : unit_cos(n) end ... module_function :unit_sin module_function :sin module_function :unit_cos module_function :cos ... end (The ellipsis means "more of the same"). As far as I can see, this is valid Ruby code. Is there something I'm missing here that's causing the error, or could the error be coming from something else? Update: I'm wondering if the problem has to do with namespaces. This code is attempting to extend CMath, so perhaps the alias and/or module_function isn't actually getting into CMath, or something like that....

Ruby: how does constant-lookup work in instance_eval/class_eval?

I'm working my way through Pickaxe 1.9, and I'm a bit confused by constant-lookup in instance/class_eval blocks. I'm using 1.9.2. It seems that Ruby handles constant-lookup in *_eval blocks the same way it does method-lookup: look for a definition in receiver.singleton_class (plus mixins); then in receiver.singleton_class.superclass (plus mixins); then continue up the eigenchain until you get to #<Class:BasicObject>; whose superclass is Class; and then up the rest of the ancestor chain (including Object, which stores all the constants you define at the top-level), checking for mixins along the way Is this correct? The Pickaxe discussion is a bit terse. Some examples: class Foo CONST = 'Foo::CONST' class << self CONST = 'EigenFoo::CONST' end end Foo.instance_eval { CONST } # => 'EigenFoo::CONST' Foo.class_eval { CONST } # => 'EigenFoo::CONST', not 'Foo::CONST'! Extending the method pool of a concrete class which is derived by an interface

Hello, I had created an interface to abstract a part of the source for a later extension. But what if I want to extend the derived classes with some special methods? So I have the interface here: class virtualFoo { public: virtual ~virtualFoo() { } virtual void create() = 0; virtual void initialize() = 0; }; and one derived class with an extra method: class concreteFoo : public virtualFoo { public: concreteFoo() { } ~concreteFoo() { } virtual void create() { } virtual void initialize() { } void ownMethod() { } }; So I try to create an Instance of concreteFoo and try to call ownMethod like this: void main() { virtualFoo* ptr = new concreteFoo(); concreteFoo* ptr2 = dynamic_cast(ptr); if(NULL != ptr2) ptr2->ownMethod(); } It works but is not really the elegant way. If I would try to use ptr-ownMethod(); directly the compiler complains that this method is not part of virtualFoo. Is there a chance to do this without using dynamic_cast? Thanks in advance!

How should I secure my webapp written using Wicket, Spring, and JPA?

So, I have an web-based application that is using the Wicket 1.4 framework, and it uses Spring beans, the Java Persistence API (JPA), and the OpenSessionInView pattern. I'm hoping to find a security model that is declarative, but doesn't require gobs of XML configuration -- I'd prefer annotations. Here are the options so far: Spring Security (guide) - looks complete, but every guide I find that combines it with Wicket still calls it Acegi Security, which makes me think it must be old. Wicket-Auth-Roles (guide 1 and guide 2) - Most guides recommend mixing this with Spring Security, and I love the declarative style of @Authorize("ROLE1","ROLE2",etc). I'm concerned about having to extend AuthenticatedWebApplication, since I'm already extending org.apache.wicket.protocol.http.WebApplication, and Spring is already proxying that behind org.apache.wicket.spring.SpringWebApplicationFactory. SWARM / WASP (guide) - This looks the newest (though the main contributor passed away years ago), but I hate all of the JAAS-styled text files that declare permissions for principals. I also don't like the idea of making an Action class for every single thing a user might want to do. Secure models also aren't immediately obvious to me. Plus, there isn't an Authn example. Additionally, it looks like lots of folks recommend mixing the first and second options. I can't tell what the best practice is at all, though.

Advice on whether to use native C++ DLL or not: PINVOKE & Marshaling ?

What's the best way to do this....? I have some Native C++ code that uses a lot of Win32 calls together with byte buffers (allocated using HeapAlloc). I'd like to extend the code and make a C# GUI...and maybe later use a basic Win32 GUI (for use where there is no .Net and limited MFC support). (A) I could just re-write the code in C# and use multiple PINVOKEs....but even with the PINVOKES in a separate class, the code looks messy with all the marshaling. I'm also re-writing a lot of code. (B) I could create a native C++ DLL and use PINVOKE to marshal in the native data structures. I'm assuming I can include the native C++ DLL/LIB in a project using C#? (C) Create a mixed mode DLL (Native C++ class plus managed ref class). I'm assuming that this would make it easier to use the managed ref class in C#......but is this the case? Will the managed class handle all the marshaling? Can I use this mixed mode DLL on a platform with no .Net (i.e. still access the native C++ unmanaged component) or do I limit myself to .Net only platforms. One thing that bothers me about each of these options is all the marshalling. Is it better to create a managed data structure (array, string etc.) and pass that to the native C++ class, or, the other way around? Any ideas on what would be considered best practice...?
