• Is there a way to sync my laptop's Ubuntu install with a jumpdrive Ubuntu install?

  So I'm doing a fresh install of Ubuntu on my laptop right now. I also have a jumpdrive with Ubuntu installed on it with a persistent setup. What I would like is to be able to plug the jumpdrive into my laptop and have the installs sync certain data. I don't want docs and such to sync of course, but I would like some software to sync with installs and updates, mostly security and recovery stuff. Here's an example of what I would like to happen: I already have TestDisk installed on my jumpdrive but I haven't booted the drive in a while. I plug it in to my laptop where TestDisk has been updated and Wireshark has been installed. I would like the jumpdrive to check to see what has changed on the laptop install (in this case TestDisk has updated and Wireshark has been installed) and make those changes to the jumpdrive. Is there any kind of software to do that?

• How to get my windows docs ; pics, mp3, and docs off an external usb hard drive (sata 3.5 enclosure)

  Back when I had windows 7, I cloned my internal hard drive to an enclosed external usb hard drive. I then formatted my internal hard drive and installed ubuntu 11.10 as my only OS. How do I migrate my files, pics, mp3's, and etc off the external drive and back to my internal drive which now only has ubuntu on it. (and why is this process not made easier?) I have tried logging in as the root user but I cannot find the external device. I have downloaded several different apps to manage files, usb sticks and etc. PLEASE HELP!!!

I've had hard drive errors in the past and those always had errors about failing to write to specific sectors in the logs. Not this time. Should I be replacing the drive? Could something else be causing the problem? I've scheduled a smartctl -t long test that will finish in a couple of hours. I hope this will give me some more info.

Device is "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N ATA Device". It appears on device manager but with the yellow tag; have tried uninstalling, searching for drivers, everything I can think of. • Windows Vista wont recognize SSD drive

  I just bought an SSD drive for my Vista (32bit) box (120GB OCZ Agility 3). Unfortunately windows vista won't display it in the my computer window, and generally wont let me work on it. However, the bios recognizes the SSD drive correctly, and when I go on the windows device manager the drive is there as well. I can see the device properties. On the volumes, when I click on populate, I have: Disk: Disk1 Type: Uknown Status: not initialized Partition style: not avaiable Unallocated space: 0MB Reserved space: 0MB Any ideas what could be wrong? • Cloning single disk drive to multiple drives simultaneously

  Hi, I am looking for a way to clone single disk drive to more than one disk drive at the same time. I have prepared system images on 1TB disks, and it takes almost 2 hours to clone one disk to another, and then it goes up exponentially, in order to have say 30 disks cloned. If it was possible to clone one disk to more than single target, it would simplify whole procedure a lot. Also, is there something that prevents this kind of operation? I mean, is there some special reason why every disk cloning software that I know about supports only single target drive? Thanks! P.S. • OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard no longer mounting an external USB drive

  I have a 1TB generic external hard drive containing a single HFS partition. I originally formatted this using Disk Utility and it worked fine. Now, for some reason, it's not auto-mounting when I start up. Using mount at the command line gives the following error: $ sudo mount /dev/disk1s2 /Volumes/Test /dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/Test: Incorrect super block. ... but if I use the mount_hfs command it works fine, mounts, and is readable. $ mount_hfs /dev/disk1s2 /Volumes/Test/ fsck gives me an error about a bad super block: $ fsck /dev/disk1 ** /dev/rdisk1 (NO WRITE) BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG ... but fsck_hfs -fn /dev/disk1s2 doesn't find any problems and reports that the volume appears to be OK. In Disk Utility, the drive appears to have a single MS-DOS partition with a curious notice about how it appears to be partitioned for Boot Camp: I have the Boot Camp HFS driver installed in WIndows 7, and that OS sees the drive/partition normally. What's wrong with my disk?

• Utility to unmap a network drive when the screen saver starts

  I'm looking for a way to unmap network drives when the screen saver turns on. I have a few users that share an external, encrypted drive (Samba share, not windows) and they have a requirement to disconnect the drive mapping when the local machine is idle. I'd also like it to warn them if there are open files on the mapped drive, if possible. There is also a requirement to force the password to be reentered before mapping when the machine comes back from idle. Is there a Windows setting or utility out there in the wild that meets these requirements?

  How does the Ubuntu trash work? It appears that one trash bin is used by many drives. I've noticed a folder called ".Trash-1000" on my network drive as well as "/home/user/.local/share/Trash". Currently I have a problem where a number of files I deleted from a network drive (which I no longer have full access to) appear in my trash but but cannot be deleted, I see the error "Failed to delete the item from the trash". If I look at the files in this network drive trash I notice that it contains all of these undeletable files. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 x64.

  DOSBox makes a virtual drive, which it names Z:, for storing utility stuff on. Clearly they're trying to stay out of your way, so you can do whatever you want with the C: drive. Swell, I understand that. But I've got some old database accessing software I really, really want to run which assumes it lives on the Z drive. So I need to get DOSBox's Z called anything else. (C would be fine with me.) I've seen mentions that it is possible, but no actual indication of how to do it. Anything that gets the job done is appreciated.

• Mount drive when symbolic link is accessed

  I have a MacBook Pro with two internal drives: an SSD and a slow rotational drive. On the rotational drive I keep heavy, rarely accessed files like movies, photos, etc. These are symlinked from the SSD, so applications like iPhoto and iTunes will still find everything where they expect. I don't usually have the rotational drive mounted because it's loud and mostly unused. Is there a way to mount it when the system tries to access data behind a symlink, then unmount it automatically later? (Intermediate *nix user, here, feel free to tell me I am asking for magic.) • Hybrid drive not booting faster than a normal HD

  I have used Windows 7 to create an image of my existing standard 160GB HD and copied this image back to a bigger 500GB Seagate hybrid drive. After copying the image to the hybrid I had to resize the partition, which was fine but after rebooting a few times to "teach" the hybrid, I have no increase in boot speed. It still takes 20-25 seconds to close down and then over a minute to start up. Is this something to do with the way the image lays itself on the drive indiscriminately? Do I need to load the OS on the drive from scratch to get the benefits? My PC with an i5 processor, is using AHCI mode.

• Can't find second partition on encrypted drive with two partitions

  I have a drive with two partitions, a system partition (Windows 7) and a partition just for data. Both are encrypted with the same password. I didn't had any problems, but yesterday my laptop gets broken. Now, I'm trying to connect the drive via USB to a new laptop and read it. The problem is, that I only see the system partition, not the one with my data. When I click on "Select Device", I can see my drive as "Harddisk 1" with 300 gb. But I only see a single partition "Partition1" with 117 gb. I'm unable to find the second one. It's not a hidden partition. Any ideas? Thanks.

• RHEL kickstart with external DVDrom drive

  HI I've an old Dell poweredge server with an CDROM drive. I've attached a USB DVDROM and USB stick with my ks.cfg on so I can install RHEL from DVD not loads of CDs :-) I can boot from the RHEL media in DVDROM and point the installer to the USB ks.cfg. This works but the ks.cfg script has the cdrom keyword in it. The install then stops and asks for the RHEL media to be in the CDROM drive not the DVDROM. How can I change the ks.cfg so it uses the external DVDROM for the install media not servers builtin cdrom drive ? I know I can go and rebuild my DVD image to include the ks.cfg , but this is an extra step I dont want to do if I have to. Regards Andy

  I am brand new to server administration but I don't belive im trying to do anything to exotic I have a windows server 2012 (standard) and a drobo 800i My goal is to setup company shares on the iscsi target I have setup on the drobo So far I have: initialized the iscsi and connected made the iscsi disk read/write(it default started as read only) formatted and mounted it (as drive E:) from the server local desktop I can see and write files to the E:\ drive in shares wizard I do not see it as a volume option when I view the volumes window I see (e: drobo Fixed 16tb 16tb) I'm new to everything but I would think since its a mounted drive I should be able to share a folder on it but it appears its not that straight forward suggestions?

  hey all, first question... we have around 30 servers in an Active Directory environment with 600 student computers and 100 staff desktops with XP SP2/3, the win server 2003 has the staff home drives on a NAS and in the last few days after some server updates is now mapping home drives to the \servername\home instead of \severname\home\%username%, its simple to re map the network drive but is annoying. we dont use login script to map home drive but use a VB script for other network drives and if we add the home drive mapping to that it works, but shouldnt the profile option in users AD account map that correctly? which do you all recommend, AD profile mapping or VB Script mapping Home drives? thanks Steven

• Dead drive in LVM/XFS configuration

  I had three drives in LVM: a 2 TB drive and two 1 TB drives (added later). One of the 1 TB drives -- I believe the third one -- has died. Spanning all three drives was an XFS partition. Reading: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/appnote/19386.html I see that one way of handling this is to replace the dead drive and copy the metadata over. However, I am currently not in possession of a 1 TB drive and can not readily acquire one. Given this, what are my options? There was nothing important on the drives (if there was I would have them in RAID 1) but I would not mind attempting a recovery. Is there a simple way of forcing LVM to go with just two drives and NUL out anything else? (So that fsck can do its thing.)

  Hi, In early January 2011, we completely switched to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. On our domain controller set up a DFS is that the users as "Z: drive" is displayed. The DFS was it in the same way during our time with Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows XP. At the time it has always worked without problems. Since Windows 7, we have sometimes the case that when a user accesses to the Z drive, the Explorer will return to the workplace without a user can do. After two to three trials of the Explorer remains in the network drive and the users work. This phenomenon occurs irregularly and you can not restrict exactly why.   Is there a Windows 7 native way to display the overall compression ratio on a Windows compressed drive? As part of our disaster recovery process, we're copying some key system folders onto 2TB external hard drive, encrypted using TrueCrypt and copied using robocopy. The drive is compressed and I'd like to see what kind of compression ratio we're getting and whether it's actually worth the performance overhead.   I recently bought a new netbook from Malasia. It doesn't have a brand name, or officially supporting drivers. It came with a version of windows, and working drivers for all the hardware - but I want to install Ubuntu on here. Being a netbook, it has no CD/DVD drive. I want some free easy to use software to image the entire drive onto a thumb drive, which I could later use to boot up a recovery program to reinstall windows, should I fail to get all the hardware supported on Linux. I have already done some research and found driver backup/restore software in this thread, and will probably use that failing a more all-encompasing solution.

  Have you ever plugged in a USB drive or any external device with a hard drive and wondered why you cannot see it in My Computer? I often have, I believe my USB is not broke .. because if I plugin the USB to another computer could be seen / detected.
