    Hi I am trying to compile helloWorld in java under snow leopard and I get this compiler error: java[51692:903] Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor It happens when I am using terminal command javac and when I am trying do this in NetBeans. I was trying to open folder "Inquisitor" but I have no access to folder , even if I login as root user. Any clue what is going on? thanks.

In Windows XP this can be done via Add/Remove Programs. Is there something equivalent on OSX? Or does reinstalling the runtime overwrite the current version?

    I had installed jdk-6u18-windows-i586 on my machine. Later on I uninstalled it and installed jdk 1.5.0_13 instead. Now when I do javac -version I get jdk 1.5.0_13 But when I do java -version I get java version "1.6.0_19" How do I fix this?

  • What could cause this Java UnsatisfiedLinkError?

    The first part of the stack-trace is as follows: "UnsatisfiedLinkError (/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.19/jre/lib/i386/libawt.so: libmlib_image.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory):" Both libawt.so and libmlib_image.so exist and are in the same directory. Does libawt.so look in a different directory? Is there an environment option I'm missing? This is part of a Rails application using Rjb (ruby-java bridge). Any help is much appreciated.

  • Friday Fun: Favorite Games to Play in Chrome

    Online games can provide a perfect break while you are working and being able to choose from a multitude of games makes it even better. If you are a game addict then you will definitely want to have a look at the Game Button extension for Chrome. Game Button in Action Once the extension has finished installing you are ready to enjoy all that gaming goodness. To get started just click on the “Toolbar Button” and choose a game category. For our example we chose “Shooting Games”. Once you select a game category a new window will open. Towards the lower right corner you will be able to access a scrollable drop-down menu and choose the game that you would like to play. Note: Some of these games come with sounds that can not be turned off so you may want to have the volume lowered all the way or your speakers temporarily turned off if you are at work. For our first game we chose “Snowball Throw”. Notice that there is a nice variety such as “DinoKids – Archery” to games like “Secret Agent”. You can see that our game was nicely sized…not too small and not too large. Go go snowballs! This is definitely a fun one to try…the best approach for this one is to use one hand for clicking the mouse and the other hand for moving it at the same time. If desired you can post your score and see other high scores afterwards. For our second game we decided to try “Target Shooter Firing Range”. This one is definitely a little harder because you have to be extremely precise while moving as quickly as possible. Not too bad for the score but that is ok. You will certainly be able to have fun finding the games that will become your favorites while enjoying the nice variety. Conclusion If you love online games and want a good variety to choose from then the Game Button extension will make a nice addition to your browser. Here’s an easy way to revisit the early years of personal computing with a theme for Windows 7. With only 64Kb of ram and an 8 bit processor, the Commodore 64 is light-years behind today’s computers.  But with a Windows 7 themepack, you can turn back the years and give your computer a quick overhaul to look more like its ancient predecessor. Age Windows 7 with a click Download the Commodore 64 theme from PC World (link below), and unzip the files. Now, double-click on the Themepack file to apply the theme. This will open your Personalization panel and will automatically change your system fonts, window style, background, and more. Your desktop will go from your Windows 7 look… to a modified Windows 7 look that is reminiscent of the Commodore 64. Open an application to see all the changes … notice the old-style font in the Window boarder and menus. This theme also changes your Computer, Recycle Bin, and User folder icons to Commodore 64-inspired icons. And, if you want to go back to the standard Windows 7 look and feel, it’s only a click away in the Personalization dialog.  Right-click on your desktop, select Personalize, and then choose the theme you want.   Conclusion Although this doesn’t give you the real look and feel of the Commodore 64, it is still a fun way to experience a bit of computer nostalgia.  There are tons of excellent themes available for Windows 7, so check back for more exciting ways to customize your desktop!   • Friday Fun: Play Tetris in Google Chrome

    Do you prefer playing classic games rather than the newer ones? Then get ready for some classic goodness with the JC-Tetris extension for Google Chrome. JC-Tetris in Action When you click on your new “JC-Tetris Toolbar Button” a new mini-Chrome window will open with the game displayed inside. This could be very convenient for those who would like or need to pause the game, minimize the window, and finish the game later. All that is needed to play are the four “Arrow Keys & the Space Bar”. Note: The text was small when the window first opened during our test so we used the “Ctrl +” keyboard shortcut twice to enlarge it. You may or may not experience similar text size results. Like any Tetris game things start out “quietly enough” but this one speeds up quickly, so be prepared! Notice that you do get a warning of what is waiting to drop onto the game board on the left side. Whenever you complete a game you will see this small window asking if you would like to enter a name for the score…you can easily ignore/bypass the window by clicking “Cancel”. Another game and a much better result. Do not be surprised if you feel that little burst of “rushed panic” at the end! Conclusion JC-Tetris is an enjoyable way to relax when you need a break. The ability to pause the game and minimize it for later makes it even better. Have fun! Today we show you some cool games to play that look like productivity apps, so the boss will be none the wiser. The website cantyouseeimbusy.com has developed some very neat little games that look like productivity apps like Word and Excel. These apps look exactly like some project you would be working on, but are really neat little games. Here we take a look at three cool ones on the site called Breakdown, Leadership, and Cost Cutter. Leadership Leadership is a cool game that looks like something you would be working in Excel and is a spin off of the classic game Moon Lander. You navigate your ship through a variety of challenging line graphs. Breakdown This one is a knock off of the classic game Break Out. Use your mouse to scroll the racket at the bottom and bounce the ball off of the text in the document. Press the space bar to pause the game and the elements will disappear…good for when the boss comes around. Cost Cutter This one is a puzzle game where it looks like your working on some bar charts in Excel. You need to click combinations of two or more blocks that are the same color. Again, hit the spacebar and the game elements will disappear. If you’re looking for a way to goof off with some simple games without the boss knowing, these will definitely do the trick.   • New Regular Expression Features in Java 8

    Java 8 brings a few changes to Java’s regular expression syntax to make it more consistent with Perl 5.14 and later in matching horizontal and vertical whitespace. \h is a new feature. It is a shorthand character class that matches any horizontal whitespace character as defined in the Unicode standard. In Java 4 to 7 \v is a character escape that matches only the vertical tab character. In Java 8 \v is a shorthand character class that matches any vertical whitespace, including the vertical tab. When upgrading to Java 8, make sure that any regexes that use \v still do what you want. Use \x0B or \cK to match just the vertical tab in any version of Java. \R is also a new feature. It matches any line break as defined by the Unicode standard. Windows-style CRLF pairs are always matched as a whole. So \R matches \r\n while \R\R fails to match \r\n. \R is equivalent to (?\r\n|[\n\cK\f\r\u0085\u2028\u2029]) with an atomic group that prevents it from matching only the CR in a CRLF pair. Oracle’s documentation for the Pattern class omits the atomic group when explaining \R, which is incorrect. You cannot use \R inside a character class. RegexBuddy and RegexMagic have been updated to support Java 8. Java 4, 5, 6, and 7 are still supported. When you upgrade to Java 8 you can compare or convert your regular expressions between Java 8 and the Java version you were using previously.

  • Friday Fun: Snowball

    It is Christmas Eve and hopefully you are enjoying the start of an early weekend away from work. This week we have a snowball throwing game for you to try out, so bundle up and get ready to let those snowballs fly! Snowball The object of the game is to use your snowball ammo to harass the drunk businessman and send him flying along distance-wise as far as you can. Simply use your mouse to aim and click the left button to throw snowballs. You can monitor your stats on the silver bar towards the top of the window. The sound can also be disabled if the music is bothering you, but keep in mind that all sound will be disabled if you use the option. Time to get those snowballs flying through the air!! Keep hitting the businessman with your snowballs as you chase after him. Make certain that your aim is good or you will quickly run out of snowballs! You can really get him moving along at a good rate and he can even go high enough in the air to disappear off the screen for a few moments. There is a also chance that your aim will be so wicked with the snowballs that you will literally knock the drunk businessman’s head off! Weird but possible… The game ends when one of these two events occur: 1.) you run out of snowballs or 2.) the businessman literally bounces back at and then drops behind you as seen in the screenshot here. The moment either happens your score will pop up and then you have the opportunity to try again. Have fun! Note: The bounce back event can happen when encountering cars.
