• Windows Azure SDK 1.2 Available - .NET 4.0 Support

  The Windows Azure team had just announced the release of the latest version of its tools and SDK (v1.2) at the TechED 2010 New Orleans. You can download it here. The biggest new feature/improvement of this version of the SDK would be Visual Studio 2010 RTM and .NET 4.0 support. It gives us the facilities to build our azure-based applications on top of .NET 3.5 and 4.0 as well. So the guys who is working on, like me, or is going to be working on .NET 4 would better to have this SDK installed I think. • Web services, Java EE, Spring, DB integration project ideas - maybe data mining related?

  I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, Java EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• Do I have to write a lot of boilerplate code if I keep working using Java?

  I'm working for a company writing ERP applications. My problem is that I have to write tons of boilerplate code. I came up with ideas to automatize/prevent the drudgery but only some of them were accepted. I have been told by the lead developer that my ideas tend to be go far afield and I should write code everyone can understand. I had a discussion about this lately and it seems to me that this kind of code ramp is within java's philosophy. I have to write lots of code to achiveve simple things not because it is necessary but because this is the way most of the people at the company think. Is this universally applicable to most of the companies out there using java or this is just my company's view? Do I have to get used to the drudgery if I keep working for java-based firms?

I've spent a lot of time reading about, and tinkering with Liferay but am concerned that it doesn't cover two of my three major concerns I need to have many sites with individual domains HTML/CSS designers need to be able to design the website templates, look and feel, and layouts in their own tools without having to worry about writing scripts Site and page building APIs must be understandable so that a custom builder interface can be created and harness the CMS as opposed to hacking it Liferay nails the first bullet point, but the second two appear to be unsolved. Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

  I'm needing to start hacking around the Citrix SDK and am trying to figure out where to start. I'm wanting to basically find a way to pass data from the client to the server and figure out how to open an application on the citrix client. I see there is a XenApp SDK, and Virtual Channel SDK but really don't know which one I need to start with. I have a Citrix development virtual server set up, but am unsure how to get started. Does someone know of a good site/tutorial on how to get started with the various Citrix API's quickly?

  Google has led many useful Java features (guava, gson); now that Oracle has purchased Sun will it effect its future enhancements and utilization as a development language. What exactly, or even approximately, are the legal ramifications? I thought Java was open source and would therefore remain unaffected ... ? Should Google just buy Oracle to get rid of the whole mess, that would be cool wouldn't it ? Do you think this is the beginning of the end for Java as a widely used language ?   I have been working in the enterprise Java field, mostly for financial institutions, for about seven years. Beyond core Java, what are "parts" of Java I should know by now? Should as in it will be useful either to nail the interview, or in an actual job. For example, I have never used JSP beyond "hello, world", but I don't suppose that it's something I need to go learn. But I have got core Spring pretty well done. I've read up on GC but that was a while back and need to re-visit it. I'm looking for one suggestion per post please.

• Is Java a good choice for small to medium size websites? [closed]

  Why do I ask? I want to use one language not two. Yes I know with Java and .NET I can program anything, but, as a website it should have a good design, I don't want to build ugly sites. Which is why for smaller sites I use PHP, I can get the e-comm I want and also a nice UI pretty easily, unlike in ASP.NET. But would I run into this design rstriction with Java (I've never used it). Plus, Java would also give me exposure to Android development. So..then I could ditch PHP? I guess I am looking for the 'one ring to rule them all', and not 2 or 3 (languages). Thanks in advance,

• Tomcat OutOfMemory after switching JVM

  I have a Tomcat6 server running on Debian squeeze there are 4 webapps running on it, and an in-JVM ActiveMQ server. It has been running for about a year with the same memorysettings, with openjdk-6. Everything has worked dandy, no issues at all. Now, for various reasons, i need to try out Sun's JDK. So, I installed sun's jvm with standard apt-get apt-get install sun-java6-bin , and switched using update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun However, when i start tomcat, i get outofmemory, the server won't even start! If i switch back to openJDK, all works fine again. I haven't had any memory issues on this server before, so it feels strange that the server suddenly won't start with sun's JDK. Anybody have any clue as to why this might happen? Have i missed something? I naturally have set heap sizes etc. in tomcat. Currently running with: -Xms256m -Xmx1024m Which as mentioned works in openSDK, outofmemory in sun-jdk... EDIT: server is 64-bit, openJDK and Sun are 1.6.0, both 64-bit JVMs.

• [Android] Force close when trying to parse JSON with AsyncTask in the background

  Hello everyone, i'm new to android development and i'm playing around with json data. I managed to get the parsing to work. I want to show a ProgressDialog and i read that i need to use AsyncTask that. But for some reason i get a force close as soon as i put the same working code inside doInBackground() eventhough eclipse says everything is fine. • Accessing Instance Attributes from Secondary Thread (iPhone-SDK)

  I have a class with an NSDictionary attribute. Inside this class I dispatch another thread to handle NSXMLParser handling. Inside my -didStartElement, I access the dictionary in the class (to compare an element found in the XML to one in the dictionary). At this point I get undefined results. Using NSLog (I'm not advanced in XCode debugging), I see that it bombs around access of the NSDictionary. I tried just iterating the dictionary and dumping the key/values inside the didStartElement and this bombs at different keys each time. The only thing I can conclude is that something is not kosher that I'm doing with regards to accessing main thread attributes from the secondary thread. I'm somewhat new to multithreading and am not sure what the best protocol is safely access attributes from additional threads. Thanks all.
