    This is a homework question. They say it takes O(logN + logM) where N and M are the arrays lengths. Let's name the arrays a and b. Obviously we can ignore all a[i] and b[i] where i k. First let's compare a[k/2] and b[k/2]. Let b[k/2] a[k/2]. Therefore we can discard also all b[i], where i k/2. Now we have all a[i], where i < k and all b[i], where i < k/2 to find the answer. What is the next step?

  • An array of MySQL results...

    What am I doing wrong here? I am attempting to return a json object and I can't seem to get past the array...   • How to only show simpleTip if certain conditions are true?

    I'm working on my first jquery project and have a question regarding the simpletip plugin. I basically have a calendar where the user can click different meeting titles and the corresponding dates get shaded in with a certain color. I am then using the simpletip to display more detailed information about the meeting when the user hovers over that date. What I want is for the simpletip to only display if the cell is colored in, or "on". When the calendar is blank and no meetings are activated, I don't want all the simpletips to show. I have tried using an if statement with a .mouseover() - this works at first, when the cells are off, no simpletip. After the meeting is turned on and colored in, the first mouseover does nothing, then the second mouseover shows the simpletip, and then the simpletip remains active even after the cell is turned off. Hope this makes sense... please help! Thank you in advance

  • Is directly executing SQL bad app design?

    I'm developing an iOS application that's a manager/viewer for another project. The idea is the app will be able to process the data stored in a database into a number of visualizations-- the overall effect being similar to cacti. I'm making the visualizations fully user-configurable: the user defines what she wants to see and adds restrictions. She might specify, for instance, to graph a metric over the last three weeks with user accounts that are currently active and aren't based in the United States. My problem is that the only design I can think of is more or less passing direct SQL from the iOS app to the backend server to be executed against the database. I know it's bad practice and everything should be written in terms of stored procedures. But how else do I maintain enough flexiblity to keep fully user-defined queries? While the application does compose the SQL, direct SQL is never visible or injectable by the user. That's all abstracted away in UIDateTimeChoosers, UIPickerViews, and the like.

    I have this abstract class and concrete implementation (they are in different assemblies): public abstract class MyAbstractClass { private static readonly int MyAbstractClassVersion = 1; public abstract int ImplementedVersion { get; } protected MyAbstractClass() { CheckVersion(); } private void CheckVersion() { var message = string.Format( "MyAbstractClass implements Version {0}, concrete is Version {1}", RepositoryVersion, ImplementedVersion); if (!MyAbstractClassVersion.Equals(ImplementedVersion)) throw new InvalidOperationException(message); } } public class ConcreteClass : MyAbstractClass { public ConcreteClass() : base() { // ConcreteClass is guaranteed to have // a constructor that calls the base constructor // I just simplified the example } public override int ImplementedVersion { get { return 2; } } } As you see, I call CheckVersion() from the abstract constructor, to get rid of the "virtual member call in base constructor" message, but I am not sure if that's really the way to do it. Sure, it works, but that doesn't mean it will always work, will it? Also, I wonder if I can get the name of the Concrete Type from the CheckVersion() function? I know that adding new abstract members will force an error anyway (System.TypeLoadException) and I'm not sure if I want this type of strict Versioning, but I'm just curious how it would be done properly given only the abstract class and an implementation (I know I could do it by using interfaces and/or a Factory pattern).

    Hi, I have a class which has a private attribute vector rectVec; class A { private: vector<Rect> rectVec; }; My question is how can I return a 'read-only' copy of my Vector? I am thinking of doing this: class A { public: const vect<Rect>& getRectVec() { return rectVect; } } Is that the right way? I am thinking this can guard against the callee modify the vector(add/delete Rect in vector), what about the Rect inside the vector?

  • Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

    Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great...   • Perl ENV variable contains newline and tab

    Say I have an environment variable myvar myvar=\tapple\n when the following command will print out this variable perl -e 'print "$ENV{myvar}"' I will literally have \tapple\n, however, I want those control chars to be evaluated and not escaped. How would I achieve it? In the real world $ENV residing in substitution, but I hope the answer will cover that.

    What I would really like is a streaming API that works sort of like StAX, and sort of like DOM/JDom. It would be streaming in the sense that it would be very lazy and not read things in until needed. It would also be streaming in the sense that it would read everything forwards (but not backwards).   • WF - Creating a selective list

    I have a stupid question. I have created a workflow Designer host where I publish my own activities. I also have a property grid which only displays the properties decorated with a special attribute. This designer is going to be used by none IT staff. What I want is that on an activity the user can select a property value from a list. I know I just could create an Enum but I would like it to be dynamic. I.e. all events on a specific interface (extracted using reflection). Is this at all possible or am I stuck with enums?

    It seems pretty common to me to have an argument, in a dynamically typed language that is either an Object or a key to lookup that object.     Hi, I am looking for recommendation for object serialization/deserialization library in c++? Which one are the most advanced and open-sourced? Can it handle Any class that users defined? Object hierarchy (parent and child classes)? A Tree of objects? Class A has an attribute of Class B which has an attribute of Class C? STL containers? Class A has a vector of Class B? A cyclic of objects? Class A has a pointer pointing to B which has a pointer to A? I find boost serialization library.   • Java Null Pointer Exception :-(

    I've got a Null Pointer Exception in my main that just won't go away and I'm totally out of ideas. The error is on the line "Board[x][y].color = 2;" in which Board is a public, static array of piece objects that contain instance variables like the one "color" that is being set to 2 in the above statement. Pieces is not static - that is there are many different copies of pieces, each with its own data, but only one board. The array has been initialized and defined as both public Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8] and public static Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8], but no matter how I mess around with it (getting rid of static, putting the variable in another object, etc.), I can't seem to get the error to go away. Help?

    Is there anything wrong with checking so many things in this unit test?: ActualModel = ActualResult.AssertViewRendered() // check 1 .ForView("Index") // check 2 .WithViewData<List<Page>>(); // check 3 CollectionAssert.AreEqual(Expected, ActualModel); // check 4 The primary goals of this test are to verify the right view is returned (check 2) and it contains the right data (check 4). Would I gain anything by splitting this into multiple tests? I'm all about doing things right, but I'm not going to split things up if it doesn't have practical value. I'm pretty new to unit testing, so be gentle.

    Hi, In C++, there is a fwrite() which writes a buffer to a file on disk: http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/clibrary/cstdio/fwrite/ Can you please tell me if there is any buffer inside that fwrite implementation? i.e. if I call fwrite() multiple times (say 10 times), does it actually invoke file i/o 10 different times?     In Visual Studio 2010 we have MSBuild for C++ project. Also we can add additional custom properties files "*.props" to projects, which are just MSBuild scripts. Is it possible in imported "some.props" file know its directory? for example there is "project.vcxproj" file and "common.props" file. I would like to write something: <IncludeDir>$( [and something for common.props file directory here] )\include</IncludeDir> What should I write there?
