However, I'm a bit confused on how permissions work and was hoping for some clarification between the following so I don't accidentally make something public I don't want. When you right-click a folder and go to properties, what is the difference between Sharing Tab - 'Share...' button - List of users and permissions there Sharing Tab - 'Advanced Sharing...' button - 'Permissions' button - List of users and permissions there Security Tab - List of users and permissions there Thanks!

• getting Thunderbird rescan imap folder

  Since I got an external program (imapfilter) modifying my imap folder, thunderbird keeps loosing track of new messages. Messages are moved upon arrival in sub-folders, making Thunderbird unable keep tracking them - therefore I have no clue which folders to look for new messages, and newly created folders (even I subscribe them after creation) does not show up until I restart the mail client. Is there any extension or setting for Thunderbird which I could use to trigger re-scanning my folder tree? Please don't waste time on advices like restarting Thunderbird: takes a great amount of time, or "use Evolution (or any other mail client)", or use internal mail filters: they are not sophisticated enough or procmail/fetchmail: I'm arranging a remote imap server for good EXTENSION 1: even folders can be created in the background, without Thunderbird would know it has been created.

  I have linux server with plesk panel. I am running sourceforge VM in NAT mode with static ip 172.16.63.XX. In my host i have configured subdomain's (vhost.conf) with proxypass to connect with VM machine.. I can access sourceforge VM with http. I am searching for http redirecting to https. http://xxx.mydomain.com -- https://xxx.mydomain.com/sf/sfmain/do/home/ . just need to know, If I own a SSL for mydomain.com. if i redirect a xxx.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/folder will the SSL will be applied to redirected domain? i.e mydomain.com/folder?

• Maximum filename length shorter in search windows than same file in original folder

  Why can a mp3 file-name be 165 characters long in its original folder, but when searching that folder, the search results window only allows editing of the first 130 characters of that same mp3 filename? This did not happen in XP! The problem occurs with both local and external drives. The act of searching doesn't somehow add to the file-name's path does it? I need to edit filenames in the search window (as I did with XP successfully) but now the search window results suddenly cannot be edited.

• Issues With IIS Hosting Two Domains From Same Folder

  I have two different domain names that resolve to the same ASP.Net site. Both domains are hosted on the same server, which runs Windows Server 2003 and IIS6. The sites are differentiated in IIS Manager using host headers. However, both of the sites point to the same folder on the local drive for the site's page files. I am occasionally experiencing an ASP.Net error that says "The state information is invalid for this page and might be corrupted." I'm the site developer so I've addressed all the relevant code-related causes for this issue. However, I was wondering whether having two domains/sites sharing the same folder for an ASP.Net application might be causing this intermittent error. Also, is this generally a bad practice? Should I make separate, duplicate folders for each of the domains? Seems like that can become a maintenance headache.

  Hi There, In my part time position as entire IT department at my Office ( I'm a MCSD developer normally ) I have been asked to change a shared folder. Only I don't really understand all the Shared / Security options. I have a folder that must be accessed by 2 people in the company (and no one else). They both must have read/write/edit and change access. They must be able to read/write/edit each others files; existing or newly created. Should be easy but I'm a bit overwhelemd by all the choices.   Any one in here who has experienced this problem. The taskbar hangs whenever I: - Open a folder from a browser - Open a usb flash drive - Open a drive on my computer It really sucks, but the solution to the taskbar hangs because of opening flash drive is to remove the flash drive. Which is not safe because the file system of my flash drive is ntfs. And I can't just safely remove it because the taskbar doesnt respond when I click it. Do you know any solutions to this? Other than disabling the automatically search for printer in the folder options.

• win7-64sp1: Rename folder (including zip file) error popup

  With the install of win7-64sp1 I get a windows explorer popup on any folder rename including .zip files. "Could not find this item" They are referring to the old name. What a bug. If I click "Try Again' the popup goes away, folder is renamed. Lots of posts on the net about this but no fixes. I tried a registry patch (that I shouldn't have) and it did nothing to fix. My experience with Microsoft is that they will never fix this, and want me to buy windows 8. This started happening after the install of sp1. I posted in one of the zillions of ridiculously byzantine and almost useless Microsoft forums but expect no answer there. They'll probably tell me to reinstall windows.

  I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

Personally, I've seen it a lot more than I expected: it's almost starting to sound cliche. Our designer argues that he is not responsible to log-in to word press and modify the css or use ftp for any changes because that's not his job description while developer argues that since it is css, it belongs to designer and that he is to update the changes to the server and then compare and correct the output.   It all started from here. I have been following Software Estimation: Demystifying the Black Art (Best Practices (Microsoft)). The third chapter says that in Software Management: You cannot give too much time to software developers, if you give it to them, then it is likely that extra time given to them will be filled by some other tasks (in other words, the developers will eat that time :)) Parkinson's Law You can also not squeeze the time from their schedule because if you do that, it is likely that they will develop poor quality product, poor design and will hurt you in the long run, there will be a panic situation and total chaos in the project, lots of rework etc. My question is related to the first point. If you don't give enough time then will the typical software engineer learn his/her skills? The market is always coming with new technologies, you need to learn them. Even with the existing familiar technologies there are always best practices and dos and don'ts.

• Can I use MSBuild to build old VS6 C++ projects?

  I have a build computer where Visual Studio not installed, only MSbuild which can build VS2008 projcets without having any Visual Studio installed. I wonder whether it is possible to use MSbuild with VC++ 6.0 project files, although I am thinking this could not be possible. In the past I have used it with a VS2008 solution file for C++, but not for building C++ 6.0 dsw file. For Vb6 we have an extension package for Msbuild (MSBuild.ExtensionPack.VisualStudio.VB6). Is anything similar available for C++ 6.0 projects? An alternative could be if there are lightweight build tools that can built VC6++ .dsw files without having to install Visual Studio 6.0 ?

The Functional Requirements are currently being worked out and documented with our business stakeholders by our Enterprise Design department. • How/where to run the algorithm on large dataset?

  I would like to run the PageRank algorithm on graph with 4 000 000 nodes and around 45 000 000 edges. Currently I use neo4j graph databse and classic relational database (postgres) and for software projects I mostly use C# and Java. Does anyone know what would be the best way to perform a PageRank computation on such graph? Is there any way to modify the PageRank algorithm in order to run it at home computer or server (48GB RAM) or is there any useful cloud service to push the data along the algorithm and retrieve the results? At this stage the project is at the research stage so in case of using cloud service if possible, would like to use such provider that doesn't require much administration and service setup, but instead focus just on running the algorith once and get the results without much overhead administration work.

I have not found any robust solution to store my work. It’s always fun to get back to your code and see how you did before and how you would do it now. It’s just work that is unfortunate to lose. There are SVN solution such as Google’s Project Hosting. However I’m not interested in sharing my code or making it open source. Currently I’m hosting my own SVN server. • What reasons are there for not using a third party version control service?

  I've recently noticed a bit of a trend for my projects as of late. I use to run my own SVN server on my VPS, but recently the nail went in the coffin for that when I got my last project migrated from my server to a Mercurial repo on Bitbucket. What are some of the ramifications to this? (disregarding the change in version control systems) It seems like there has been a huge explosion in version control hosting, and companies like Bitbucket even offer private repos for free, and Github and other such services are extremely cheap now. Also, by using them you get the benefit of their infrastructure's speed and stability. What reasons are there these days to host your own version control? The only real reason I can think of is if your source code is super top secret.
