• Programming Language most relevant to the Financial sector?

  I am a freshman in college and doing a software engineering/ finance double major. I've been learning programming on my own and have a good bit of familiarity with php by now. I was wondering what you guys think the most relevant programming language is for financial/investment banking use? I have read this thread: Books on developing software for financial markets/investment banks I want to start learning/reading up on a language (the basics not financial/quant stuff) to set a foundation for the future financial/quant stuff.

• Cannot install wine on Ubuntu natty 64bit [broken dependency]

  I've just installed Ubuntu natty 64bit. Now I'm trying to install wine and no matter how I do it (Software center/synaptic/terminal), it fails. Here's what I tried on terminal: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install wine It shows: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • How can I get my HID device working in VirtualBox?

  I'm running the latest official Ubuntu build of VirtualBox (4.1.12), with Windows 8 running as the guest OS. I have a Windows app that works with a card reading HID device, but it's not detected by the guest OS at all. I've installed the USB extensions, guest additions and set my udev rules accordingly (my own linux app is able to access the device), but no joy. Does anyone know how to get this working?

• Incorrect monitor colours

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and my monitor had a problem where Green is the bright colour, there's no way to change it in the monitor settings, so when I was using WinXP (I'm new in here) I changed the green to lower using Video Driver settings, in here (ubuntu) I don't know exactly how I would change the green colour to low, so my "black" would be seem has a real black, no green. But why should it be seen as a disadvantage?   I'm reading "Java concurrency in practice" and there is said: "Fortunately, the same object-oriented techniques that help you write well-organized, maintainable classes - such as encapsulation and data hiding -can also help you create thread-safe classes." The problem #1 - I never heard about data hiding and don't know what it is. The problem #2 - I always thought that encapsulation is using private vs public, and is actually the data hiding. Can you please explain what data hiding is and how it differs from encapsulation?

• users disappear from options menu when given uids under 1000

  I wanted to stop particular user names appearing in the list of names at the log in screen. I remembered reading that this could be achieved by changing the user id of the account to something less than 1000 (I think I made it 990). So I did this. That worked fine, but now when I wanted to change it back, the name is not appearing in the list of user accounts in the users and groups menu under administration. How do I modify the phantom account?

  The mp3 format can handle multiple artists per track (in the form of "artist1\artist2"), and as far as I know other modern music formats can do the same thing. However, Rhythmbox (my default music player) seems to be capable of only reading the first artist. Are there any music players that can read and sort songs with multiple artists, or a plugin for Rhythmbox that can provide this functionality?

• DirectX 11 Constant Buffers vs Effect Framework

  I'm having some trouble understanding the differences between using constant buffers or using the effect framework of DirectX11 for updating shader constants. From what I understand they both do exactly the same thing, although from reading the documentation it appears as if using effects is meant to be 'easier'. However they seem the same to me, one uses VSSetConstantBuffers and the other GetConstantBufferByName. Is there something I'm missing here?

  I was reading Learn C the Hard Way when I stumbled upon and followed the instructions for installing Valgrind, the C debugger. However, when I ran ./configure to setup build configurations, I got checking for the kernel version... unsupported (3.0.0-17-generic) configure: error: Valgrind works on kernels 2.4, 2.6 I am running Ubuntu 11.10, on the kernel Linux 3.0.0-17-generic x86_64. The answer may be obvious but I'm not acquainted with Linux: How do I get Valgrind working on my computer? Thanks.

• Which Kinect package for PC takes care of motion tracking too?

My question is - the drivers at OpenKinect seems to provide only the images and depth data (from the reading of their wiki and API). It seems that you need to provide your own imaging solution.   I'm reading on a Book that's about Gamedevelopment with C++ and DirectX 9. There is something that interrests me: It says that playermovements are increasing with the power of the CPU. Becouse a faster CPU will move the player with every frame ( better CPU = better FPS ) To bypass it, it says you have just to multiplicate time*movementfactor .
