  Hi all, I need to work with large files and must find differences between two. And I don't need the different bits, but the number of differences. For the differ rows I come up with diff --suppress-common-lines --speed-large-files -y File1 File2 | wc -l And it works, but is there a better way to do it? And how to count the exact number of differences (with standard tools like bash, diff, awk, sed some old version of perl)? Thanks in advance

• Problem with files consists of spaces and single quotes?

  I'using the following code to create thumbnails using ffmpeg but it was working fine for the files which have no spaces or any quotes.. But when the file has a space (like 'sachin knock.flv') or files which have quotes (like sachin's_double_cent.mp4) it doesn't work.. What can i do to get those files work accurately? One restriction is that i can't rename files as they are lump some.. • How to Sync Specific Folders With Dropbox

  Would you like to sync specific folders with Dropbox instead of automatically syncing all of your folders to all of your computers?  Here’s how using Selective Sync available in the latest Beta version of Dropbox. Dropbox is a great tool for keeping your important files synced between your computers, and we have covered many interesting things you can do with your Dropbox account.  But until now, there was no way to only sync certain folders with each computer; it was all or nothing.  This could be frustrating if you wanted to store large files from one computer but didn’t want them on a computer with a smaller hard drive.  The latest Beta version of Dropbox allows you to selectively choose which folders to sync between computers. Please Note: This feature is currently only available in the 0.8 beta version of Dropbox. Setup the new Beta Download the new beta version of Dropbox 0.8 (link below); choose the correct download for your system.  Run the installer as normal. It only took a couple seconds to install, though it made the taskbar disappear briefly at the end of the installation on our tests.  Strangely, the installer doesn’t let you know it’s finished installing; if you already had a previous version of Dropbox installed, it will simply start working from your system tray as before.  If this is a new installation of Dropbox, you will be asked to enter your Dropbox account info or create a new account.   Selectively Sync Folders By default, Dropbox will still sync all of your Dropbox folders to all of your computers.  Once this beta is installed, you can choose individual folders or subfolders you don’t want to sync.  Right-click the Dropbox icon in your system tray and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab on the top, and then click the new Selective Sync button. Now uncheck any folders you don’t want to sync to this computer.  These folders will still exist on your other machines and in the Dropbox web interface, but they will not be downloaded to this computer. The default view only shows your top-level folders in your Dropbox account.  If you wish to sync certain folders but exclude their subfolders, click the Switch to Advanced View button.   Expand any folder and uncheck any subfolders you don’t want to sync.  Notice that the parent folder’s check box is filled now, showing that it is partially synced. Click OK when you’ve made the changes you want.  Dropbox will then make sure you know these folders will stop syncing to this computer; click OK again if you’re sure you don’t want to sync these folders.   Dropbox will cleanup your folder and remove the files and folders you don’t want synced.   Next time you open your Dropbox folder, you’ll notice that the folders we unchecked are no longer in this computer’s Dropbox folder.  They are still in our Dropbox online account, and on any other computers we’re syncing with. If you add a new folder with the same name as a folder you stopped syncing, you’ll notice a grey minus icon over the folder.  This folder will not sync with your other computers or your online Dropbox account. If you want to add these folders back to this computer’s Dropbox, just repeat the steps, this time checking the folders you want to sync.  If you have any folders that were not syncing before, their names will have (Selective Sync Conflict) added to the end, and will sync with all of your computers. Conclusion We’re excited that we can now choose exactly which folders we want synced on each computer.  Since everything is still synced with the online Dropbox, we can still access any of the folders from anywhere.  This makes your Dropbox much more versatile, and can help you keep the folders synced exactly the way you want. • Web Site Performance and Assembly Versioning – Part 2 Versioning Combined Files Using Subversion

  Ok so it took a while to post this second part. Many apologies, we had a big roll out of a new platform at work and many things had to get sidelined. So this is the second part in a short series of website performance and using versioning to help improve it. Minification and Concatination of JavaScript and CSS Files Versioning Combined Files Using Subversion – this post Versioning Combined Files Using Mercurial – published shortly In the previous post we used AjaxMin to shrink js and css files then concatenated them into one file each which had the file name of site-script.combined.min.js and site-style.combined.min.css. These file names are fine, but you can configure IIS 7 to cache these static files and so lower the amount of data transferred between server and client. This is done by editing the response headers in IIS. 1. In IIS7 Manager, choose the directory where these files are located and select HTTP Response Headers. 2. Check the Expire Web Content and set a time period well into the future. 3. When refreshing the web page, the server will respond with HTTP 304 forcing the browser to retrieve the file from its cache. 4. As can be seen in FireBug, the Cache-Control header has a max age of 31536000 seconds which equates to 365 days.   The server will always send this HTTP 304 message unless the file changes forcing it to send new content. To help force this we can change the file name based on the latest build using the SVN revision number in the filename. So we have lowered data transfer on content that hasn’t changed, but forced it to be sent when you have made a change to the css or js files. Now to get the SVN revision number in to the file name. 1. Import the MSBuildCommunityTasks targets which can be dowloaded from here. 1: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath) 2: \MSBuildCommunityTasks 3: \MSBuild.Community.Tasks.Targets" /> 2. Edit the BeforeBuild target to call out to svn and get the latest revision 1: <SvnVersion LocalPath="$(MSBuildProjectDirectory)" 2: ToolPath="$(ProgramFiles)\VisualSVN Server\bin"> 3: <Output TaskParameter="Revision" PropertyName="Revision" /> 4: </SvnVersion> 3. Set it to update the project AssemblyInfo.cs file for the svn revision. 1: <FileUpdate Files="Properties\AssemblyInfo.cs" 2: Regex="(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)" 3: ReplacementText="$1.$2.$3.$(Revision)" /> 4. Now edit the AfterBuild target to get the full dll version.   It seems that a constructor that takes a non-const reference to an istream cannot be constructed with a temporary value in C++. #include <iostream> #include <sstream> using namespace std; class Bar { public: explicit Bar(std::istream& is) {} }; int main() { istringstream stream1("bar1"); Bar bar1(stream1); // OK on all platforms // compile error on linux, Mac gcc; OK on Windows MSVC Bar bar2(istringstream("bar2")); return 0; } This compiles fine with MSVC, but not with gcc. Using gcc I get a compile error: g++ test.cpp -o test test.cpp: In function ‘int main()’: test.cpp:18: error: no matching function for call to ‘Bar::Bar(std::istringstream)’ test.cpp:9: note: candidates are: Bar::Bar(std::istream&) test.cpp:7: note: Bar::Bar(const Bar&) Is there something philosophically wrong with the second way (bar2) of constructing a Bar object? It looks nicer to me, and does not require that stream1 variable that is only needed for a moment.

• LNK2005: delete already defined error in VC++

  Hi, I am newbie to VC++, so please forgive me if this is stupid. I have got 7 solutions under one project. Six of these build static libraries which is linked inside 7th to produce an exe. The runtime configuration of all the projects is MultiThreaded Debug. sln which is used to produce exe is using MFC other slns use standard runtiem library. I tried changing those to MFC, but still I am getting the same error. All the six slns build successfully. When I try to build exe - get the follwoing error: nafxcwd.lib(afxmem.obj) : error LNK2005: "void __cdecl operator delete(void *,int,char const *,int)" (??3@YAXPAXHPBDH@Z) already defined in tara_common.lib(fileStream.obj) This is weird because tara_common is one of the libs that I generated and fileStream.cpp is file that is just using delete on a pointer. I built it in verbose mod, so I am attaching the output. • Move the uploads folder in Wordpress

  Currently, my Wordpress' upload folder is located in \wp-content\uploads. Initially there was no structure so all files were put there. After a while it was changed to upload the files in \wp-content\uploads\YEAR\MONTH. Now that folder contains a mix of files (those starting with + are folders) like: +wp-content | +2010 | | +02 | | | File-1 | | | File-2 | | | .. | | | File-n | | +01 | | | File-1 | | | File-2 | | | .. | | | File-n | +2009 | | +12 | | | File-1 | | | File-2 | | | .. | | | File-n | | +11 | | | File-1 | | | File-2 | | | .. | | | File-n | +.. | | | .. | Unstructured-file-1 | Unstructured-file-2 | ... | Unstructured-file-n Based on the dates of the unstructured files, I would like to move them in a structured hierarchy (based on date, move it to a folder \wp-content\uploads\YEAR\MONTH). Now, my questions are: Where do I write and execute a script to the movement (I don't have full access to the server, just to a cPanel and to the Wordpress Admin page)? What must be updated so that the links in posts, that reference the unstructured files, point to the new location of those files? Not fully related to the previous description: is it alright to move the whole uploads folder to another location, like \uploads? PS: Moving the files/updating the database manually is not an option :)

• Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

  I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details.   Previous information concerning my issue can be found here: Virus...? Tons of people talking. Not sure where else to ask. I heard the loud sounds and whatnot from one of the ads but nothing was harmed and other than having the life scared out of me nothing was immediately affected. Literally nothing has changed. I really don't know what to do. My PC seems fine and from what Malwarebytes and Spybot tells me none of my files have been infected with anything. • Windows xp - recover document opened directly from IE

  Hi Attempting to help a family member recover a document. The word 2007 document was downloaded and opened directly from a webmail interface using Internet Explorer running on Windows XP. The user saved the document multiple times while working on it for the good part of a day. After closing Word 2007 the user is not able to locate the document, and I have so far not been able to help. The computer has not been turned off, and the user has not attempted to open the document directly from the mail again. Recreating the events on vista/windows 7 its easy enough to locate the document under the Temporary Internet Files folder. I have however not been able to do the same on a Windows XP. Any suggestion for how to locate this document, or if its even possible? Thanks

• Wireless is detected, but not connecting. Ethernet works. How to correct the wireless address?

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 with cable internet, and my wireless is detected and connected, but I cannot connect to the internet. I know the problem is with my machine because other machines are connecting to the same router just fine. I can connect via ethernet just fine as well. Here are some notable tests: ping 192.168.0.105 works with 0% packet loss, but ping 192.168.0.1 has 100% packet loss. When I plug in my ethernet, ping 192.168.0.1 works with 0% packet loss. My wireless name is tg, and the router ip is 192.168.0.1 (where I can enter username and password). I suspect that I need to change my wireless address from 192.168.0.105 to 192.168.0.1. • Memory mapped files and "soft" page faults. Unavoidable?

  I have two applications (processes) running under Windows XP that share data via a memory mapped file. Despite all my efforts to eliminate per iteration memory allocations, I still get about 10 soft page faults per data transfer. I've tried every flag there is in CreateFileMapping() and CreateFileView() and it still happens. I'm beginning to wonder if it's just the way memory mapped files work. If anyone there knows the O/S implementation details behind memory mapped files I would appreciate comments on the following theory: If two processes share a memory mapped file and one process writes to it while another reads it, then the O/S marks the pages written to as invalid. When the other process goes to read the memory areas that now belong to invalidated pages, this causes a soft page fault (by design) and the O/S knows to reload the invalidated page. Also, the number of soft page faults is therefore directly proportional to the size of the data write. My experiments seem to bear out the above theory. When I share data I write one contiguous block of data. In other words, the entire shared memory area is overwritten each time. If I make the block bigger the number of soft page faults goes up correspondingly. So, if my theory is true, there is nothing I can do to eliminate the soft page faults short of not using memory mapped files because that is how they work (using soft page faults to maintain page consistency). What is ironic is that I chose to use a memory mapped file instead of a TCP socket connection because I thought it would be more efficient. Note, if the soft page faults are harmless please note that. I've heard that at some point if the number is excessive, the system's performance can be marred. If soft page faults intrinsically are not significantly harmful then if anyone has any guidelines as to what number per second is "excessive" I'd like to hear that. Thanks.

In my emacs config, I have split my customizations into a series of files, where each file is a single unit of related options (for example, all my perl-related settings might be in perl-settings.el. All these settings files are loaded automatically by a function in my .emacs that simply loads every elisp file under my "settings" directory. I am looking to structure my Conkeror config in the same way, with my main conkeror-rc file basically being a stub that loads all the js files under a certain directory relative to my home directory. Unfortunately, I am much less literate in javascript than I am in elisp, so I don't even know how to "source" a file.

• Why can't IE6 shows semi transparent png8 files with alpha filter ?

  -- read the whole question before answering -- Hi, i work on a big website that had a lot (45000+) of png24 images (with semi transparency). I converted them to png8 and it works very well (a big help on page load time...). The thing is i had to keep png24 files for ie6 users (with alpha filter to have semi transparent pixels) because we all know that we can't use png 8 semi transparent images in IE6 : either the semi transparent pixels will be opaque or completely transparent. I tried to use the alpha image loader filter with png8 images but it just don't work, the pixels are still opaque/completely transparent, no semi transparency. What's the reason it's not working ? Is there a difference for IE when dealing with semi transparent pixels from a png24 or from a png8 ? I couldn't find any information on msdn websites or on stackoverflow... This is crazy... ! DISCLAIMER : i'm not searching for a f**ckin fix IE6 png or sh*t like that, i already know alpha image loader or htc techniques etc, theses all works well with PNG24 files but doesn't work with png8 files.

• Where to create/keep secret files for license information/trials on Windows/Mac OS X/Linux?

  I'm writing a commercial product which uses a simple registration mechanism and allows the user to use the application for a demo period before purchasing. My application must somewhere store the registration information (if entered) and/or the date of the first launch to calculate if the user is still within the demo/trail period. While I'm pretty much finished with the registration mechanism itself, I now have to find a good way to store the registration information on the user's disk. The most obvious idea would be to store the trial period in the preferences file, but since user tend to delete/tinker with those from time to time, it might be a good idea to keep the registration information in a separate, more hidden file. So here's my question: What is the best place/strategy to keep and create such hidden files on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux? Here is what came to my mind so far: Linux/Mac OS X Most Unix-like systems are rather locked down when it comes to places a user can write files to. In most cases this is only the /tmp directory and the user's home directory. I guess the easiest here is probably to create a file with a dot-prefix to make it less visible, then give it a name that won't make it obvious that it's associated with my application. Windows Probably much like Linux/Mac OS X - more recent Windows versions become more restrictive when it comes to file system permissions. Anyway, I'd like to hear your ideas and thoughs. Even better if you have already implemented something similar in the past. Thanks!   Running XSD.exe on my xml to generate C# class. • How to clean and add options to the Open With list of apps

  After installing several PPAs (Wine, PoL) and opening several files with other apps (Like changing from Totem to VLC) I discovered that the Open With option had 2 problems: Many items on the list are duplicated (As seen on the image for "A Wine Program") Sometimes the app I want to use to open is not shown there (For example, Virtualbox or VLC) So how can I edit this list to clean the duplicates and add missing apps from the list.
