  Problem setting up wireless connection on my new ACER Netbook using Win 7 Starter. Works fine with LAN cable from NETGEAR WGT624V3 router with updated firmware. The NETGEAR does not see the ACER, but does see my XP Laptop. I'm also running a wireless, BlueRay DVD. When I run getmac I get hardware not pesent, my mac address, Hardware not present. Is there a switch that needs to be set?

• Creating a network link between 2 very close buildings

  I have a charity who have two adjacent medium sized modern detached houses (in the UK): the buildings stand next to each other and are less than 5 metres apart. They have DSL connected to a single computer in one of the buildings. They want to add a network with wireless, and want it to work across both buildings. Being a charity they need to keep costs down. The network would be used for sharing Word documents, e-mail, browsing and skyping. My initial thoughts were to connect the buildings with fibre. So: Option 1 Use fibre between the buildings. Sufficient cable and two TP-LINK MC100CM Fast Ethernet Media Converters. Cost ~£80.00. But there is the extra cost and hassle of running the cable down and up the external walls, lifting and relaying paving, and burying underground. Never having fitted fibre I'm also a little worried about going up the wall and then bending the cable at 90 degrees to go through the wall and into the building. Option 2 Use two TP-Link TL-WA7510N High Powered Outdoor 5Ghz 15dBi Wireless antennas to connect the buildings. There is a clear line of sight at first floor level. Cost ~£100. And much easier to fit than fibre! Is using the TL-WA7510Ns overkill? Is there something more suitable? I had hoped to use some Netgear stuff, e.g. two DGN2200, one in each house and also use them to provide the wireless link between the buildings. However, in bridge mode wireless client association is not available and repeater mode with client association only supports WEP security which isn't strong enough. Is there something similar that would be up to the job? Option 3 Connect the buildings with UTP cable. My concerns here are risk of electric shock due to a difference of potential between the buildings (or are they so close this shouldn't be an issue) and protection from lightning strikes. Is fitting lighting arrestors expensive? And what can be done to ameliorate against the risk of shock? This all falls outside my area of expertise so I would really appreciate some advice.

• Some web pages won't download fully

  Some web pages won't download fully under any browser on any computer connected to the network. I have Internet access through a wireless modem/router (2 Mbps DSL connection, wireless reception is excellent). I use Opera and when I turn on Opera turbo the same sites download fully.   Having a bit of a weird one with my local LAN setup. I recently installed a Cisco 877W router on my DSL2+ connection and all is working really well.. Upgraded the IOS to 12.4 and my wired clients are streaming connectivity superfast at 1.3mb/s. However, there seems to be an issue with my wireless clients - I can't seem to stream any data across the local wireless connection (LAN) and using the Internet, whilst responsive enough isn't really comparable with the wired connection speed. • Network card very slow, only on Windows

  This only happens to 1 of my machine, and only when booting into Windows 7. No matter what network card I put in, Windows would default its mode to 10Mbps full duplex. Transfer speed is approximately 1 MB/s. If I set it to 100Mbps, the transfer drops to 100-200K/s. If I set it to 1000Mbps, the connection is lost completely. I've tried swapping in different cards, both PCI-E and PCI. I'v etried update the windows, I've tried reinstalling the drivers... On this very same machine, if I boot into Fedora, it can use the card at its full capacity 1000Mbps transfering 80+ MB/s And all the cards work just fine when plugging into other machines on the same network. I'm very curious. What could be the reason for this? The only different software that this machine has is virtual box with a VPN emulator, but disabling that VPN doesn't seem to do anything. I would like to get this fixed, hopefully, without reinstalling windows _< Will that be possible?

• Network card/driver stops under heavy load

  Since about approx. 2 month, I do have the following issue with my approx. 1 year old development machine (Windows 7, 64 bit): When doing network intensive operations, like e.g. executing some SQL script on a remote SQL server to select or update 1000 of records, the network card stops working. I.e. suddenly, No network connection is present anymore. No internet, no local connection, simply nothing. The only resolution so far I found is to disable my network card and then simply enable it back, like in the following screenshots: 1.) Click "Deactivate" 2.) Click "Activate" (German screenshots only, sorry) Now this is an acceptable solution to work around this issue, but I would love to have this fixed, since it suddenly stops me from working when I'm connected remotely via VPN/RDP on my machine (Win7 64bit). So my question is: Could you imagine a possible cause for this issue and give some hints how to hunt/resolve it? I could imagine that this is a driver issue, a hardware issue or even some kind of background software issue like a software firewall or a virus scanner.

• outlook security alert after adding a second wireless access point to the network

  Just added a Netgear WG103 Wireless Access Point in our conference room to allow visitors to access the internet through out internal network. When switched on visitors can connect to the intenet and everything works fine. Except, when the Access Point is switched on, normal users of the network get a Security Alert when they try to start Outlook 2007. The Security Alert is the same as the one shown in question 148526 asked by desiny back in June 2010 (http://serverfault.com/questions/148526/outlook-security-alert-following-exchange-2007-upgrade-to-sp2) rather than "autodiscover.ad.unc.edu" my security alert references our "Remote.server.org.uk". If I view the certificate it relates to "Netgear HTTPS:....", but the only Netgear equipment we have is the new Access Point installed in the conference room. If the Access Point is not switched on we do not get the Security Alert. At first I thought it was because we had selected "WPA-PSK & WPA2-PSK" Network Authentication Type but it continues to occur even if we opt for "Shared Key" WEP Data Encryption. I do not understand why adding a Netgear Wireless Access point would cause Outlook to issue a Security Alert when users try to read their email. Does anyone know what I have to do to get rid of the Security Alert? Thanks in advance for reading this and helping me out.

• unable to access Internet by wireless but can by cable

  i'M GOING MAD! UNtil last friday I had been successfully using wifi with the supplier as VIRGIN through their Motorola SB 4200 cable Modem and the wireless router being the Linksys WRT 54G router. Supported were three lap tops and an EPSON 510W printer and this had been running with no issue for about 3 years. Back to last friday, we started suffering significant delays and then the network collapsed with no wireless access. I was able to connect a single laptop direct to the cable modem and internet access was restored to just that one device. I thought that the problem was the router so I tried a backup D-Link device with no success. I have subsequently bought another cable modem AND a netgear router plus addidtional ethernet cables but with no success. The best that happens is that the signal appears good but I cannot get access to the internet. A yellow question mark appears on the 'gradient' icon. Each laptop and router works elsewhere so I'm stumped. Mind you I am a real novice so I'm not surprised. Please can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

  Alright, I asked this on StackOverflow (here) and they suggested trying ServerFault to get help on permissions. So here's the deal. We designed a custom PCI card and wrote the driver for it. It's been working for years without problems but now we encountered one particular installation were it doesn't work. The problem is that we cannot connect to the PCI to begin communication with it. We tried replacing the card and had the same problem. We had the motherboard replaced thinking the PCI slots were bad. That didn't help either. We tried the cards in a different computer and they all worked. So it seemed to be something specific to the computer. The Windows Device Manager indicates the device is working properly and seems to have all the correct driver info. We now have this troublesome computer back at the office for testing. With the help of some extra debug info in the driver we determined that we cannot connect because access is denied. Sounds like a permissions issue to me. I should note that we are logged into the system as a local administrator. So what configuration option in Windows can prevent access to a device?

  In my website I changed or better word modified the directory name ""vehicles-cars"" to ""vehicles-cars-for-sale"" when i tried to redirect using wild card redirect my old directory name to new directory name in my web hosting cpanel account. every time when i open pages from that directory i am getting error code. This web-page has a redirect loop. The website is php. The problem is that that my lots of pages from old directory are indexed in googles and they are getting duplicate contents. If I redirect single page it works perfect but there are lots of pages so I need wild card redirect to redirect whole directory . I really need some advice what to do with this problem. • Linux virtualization choices with graphic acceleration / video card support

  I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments. From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup. So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments? Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's? Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

• MacBook Pro (2007 - ATI-Card) Screen goes half black then shuts down the entire computer

  Hey, when I'm starting my MBP I get about 10-60 seconds of the booting process before the screen goes half black (Its like applying a black to transparent gradient from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen). After a 5 seconds the entire screen blacks out and the MBP shuts down. There have been issues with heat and some minor artifacts on the screen in the past but nothing serious as far as I know. Everything could be resolved by rebooting or letting the MBP cool down a bit. I would like to identify the problem now. There are 3 possibilities I can think of right now: My graphics card is defect and shuts down after a few seconds. (But if thats true, I find it kind of hard to explain the HALF black screen) My LCD-Panel is defect and sends back wrong signals so the system shuts down??? (I not sure about that) My fan or/and thermal sensors are defect and forcing the graphics card to shut down. Can anyone point if I'm right or if there yet another reason for this. I tried them on my previous laptop, and then installed the ones off their included CD. (Note that the systems requirements includes a CD-ROM drive...) I have a new laptop, and lost the CD. The website that lists the drivers is broken - the download links don't work.   I have two hosts in a pool and I used to be able to move the vm around and they will start without any problem. But after I played around with some network setting, which I don't remember what, I started getting "This VM needs storage that cannot be seen from that server" message. As you can tell I am a beginner with Xenserver. Here is the very simple environment: 2 host servers with their own local hard disk and network card. One is a Pool master. Problem: Power off a vm and move vm from one server to another, or clone one vm to the other server. It used to be able to start up right away.
