• Difference between internet and Desktop jave EE app server

  Hello. I need some clarification. I know that in order to run a java EE project, one needs a java EE compliant application server, such as tomcat, jboss, glashfish, etc. But, i download these to my desktop, but how about when i run it online? Are Jboss, tomcat, glashfish, etc. application servers just for your desktop, or are these the app server internet service providers have as well. I am trying to use godaddy as my internet service provider; i called them, but the customer service guy didnt know what application server they had, or did i ask the wrong question? Or how can i know waht application server they have? Thank you, any help is greatly appreciated.

• In what specific areas has F# proven more applicable than C#?

  Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#. EDIT: Altered title with the intent of reducing perceived ambiguity.

• Framework Recommendation request: spring, struts, j2ee?

  The last time I looked at web applications, the consensus seemed to be Struts/J2EE. Now, it looks like Spring MVC/J2EE or Struts/J2EE are both viable solutions. Is this generally correct? Or is Spring MVC now the consensus choice over Struts? We have at least one guy who has worked with Struts before and wants to go with that. I'm more familiar with Struts as well, having reviewed in the past. Also, is J2EE still considered the viable solution for handling remote components? Or are there alternatives?

• Where/When does C# and the .NET Framework fail to be the right tool?

  In my non-programming life, I always attempt to use the approprite tool for the job, and I feel that I do the same in my programming life, but I find that I am choosing C# and .NET for almost everything. I'm finding it hard to come up with (realistic business) needs that cannot be met by .NET and C#. Obviously embedded systems might require something less bloated than the .NET Micro Framework, but I'm really looking for line of business type situations where .NET is not the best tool. I'm primarly a C# and .NET guy since its what I'm the most comfertable in, but I know a fair amount of C++, php, VB, powershell, batch files, and Java, as well as being versed in the web technologes (javascript, html/css). But I'm open minded about it my skill set and I'm looking for cases where C# and .NET are not the right tool for the job. The bottom line here, is that I feel that I'm choosing C# and .NET simply because I am very comfertable with it, so I'm looking for cases where you have chosen something other than .NET, even though you are primarly a .NET developer.

• How can I stop a default event when using a named function in addEvent?

  Normally, if I wish to stop a default event in mootools I can do this: $('form').addEvent('submit', function(e) { e.stop(); //Do stuff here } However, I don't like using an anonymous function in events because I often want to reuse the code. Lets say I have a validate function. I could do this: $('form').addEvent('submit', validate); which works fine until I want to stop the default event. validate obviously doesn't know what e is so I can't just do e.stop(). Also I've tried passing the event as a variable to validate but whenever I use a named function with parameters, the function gets called automatically on domready, rather than on the event firing. Even worse, an error is thrown when the event is fired: What am I doing wrong?

  There are a few factory methods in Google Guava to create InputSuppliers, e.g. from a byte[]: ByteStreams.newInputStreamSupplier(bytes); Or from a File: Files.newInputStreamSupplier(file); Is there a similar way to to create an InputSupplier for a given InputStream? That is, a way that's more concise than an anonymous class: new InputSupplier<InputStream>() { public InputStream getInput() throws IOException { return inputStream; } }; Background: I'd like to use InputStreams with e.g. Files.copy(...) or ByteStreams.equal(...).

• What is wrong with my Basic Authentication in FireFox?

  Hi folks, i'm trying to goto the following url :- http://user1:pass1@localhost:1234/api/users?format=xml nothing to complex. Notice how i've got the username/password in the url? this, i believe, is for basic authentication. When i do that, the Request Headers are MISSING the 'Authorize' header. Er... that's not right :( I have anonymous authentication only setup on the site. I don't want to have anon off and basic turned on .. because not all of the site requires basic.. only a few action methods. So .. why is this not working? Is this something to do with the fact my code is not sending a 401 challenge or some crap? For What It's Worth, my site is ASP.NET MVC1 running on IIS7 (and the same thing happens when i run it on cassini).

• TFS no release folder in build folder

  I have a tfs build that works fine on the client, but when executed on the server, no actual binaries get created. When I go to the folder: \[MyServer]\builds[BuildName], I see BuildLog.txt ErrorsWarningsLog.txt Release.txt I expect to see a big \Release folder full of my dlls, but I get nothing. The error log reports no problems up until we ask the build to copy the binaries to our staging server. If I comment those out, I get no errors. CustomizableOutDir is true, DropLocation is set to something sensible BuildDirectoryPath is set to something sensible But no matter what, I just don't get any dlls built. Our local TFS guy is baffled too. Any suggestions?

I see it everywhere in Rails: class User < ActiveRecord::Base or… ActionController::Routing::Routes.draw do |map| I found a definition from this guy: The :: is a unary operator that allows: constants, instance methods and class methods defined within a class or module, to be accessed from anywhere outside the class or module. but that just leads to more questions. What good is scope (private, protected) if you can just use :: to expose anything?

• Best data store for billions of rows

  I need to be able to store small bits of data (approximately 50-75 bytes) for billions of records (~3 billion/month for a year). The only requirement is fast inserts and fast lookups for all records with the same GUID and the ability to access the data store from .net. I'm a SQL server guy and I think SQL Server can do this, but with all the talk about BigTable, CouchDB, and other nosql solutions, it's sounding more and more like an alternative to a traditional RDBS may be best due to optimizations for distributed queries and scaling. I tried cassandra and the .net libraries don't currently compile or are all subject to change (along with cassandra itself). I've looked into many nosql data stores available, but can't find one that meets my needs as a robust production-ready platform. If you had to store 36 billion small, flat records so that they're accessible from .net, what would choose and why?

  I read on the internet many tutorials that explained how to use lambdas with the standard library (such as std::find), and they all were very interesting, but I couldn't find any that explained how I can use a lambda for my own functions. And then, how can I call the anonymous function passing to it - for example - "10" as its argument?

I came across some syntax today that I have never seen, and that I can't seem to figure out. In the following method declaration, what does < T represent? static void Foo < T (params T[] x) I have seen used in conjunction with declaring generic collections and things, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it does for this method. Right now our SharePoint sites built on FBA based, so all sites are behind login page. Now I export each updates from these lists to our another external public site (anonymous). • node_load in drupal gets incorrect node when you are NOT logged in

  Hi All, i have a module and i am using node_load(array('nid' = arg(1))); now the problem is that this function keep getting its data for node_load from DB cache. how can i force this function to not use DB cache or static value? Example my link is http://mydomain.com/node/344983 now: $node=node_load(array('nid'=arg(1)),null,true); echo $node-nid; output: 435632 which is a randomly node id (available in the database) and everytime i ctrl+F5 my browser, i get new nid!! Note: if i am logged in, it gives the result correctly, but this problem happens only when i am browsing the website as an anonymous user i really appreciate any idea!! Thanks

  I am taking an assembly course now, and the guy who checks our home assignments is a very pedantic old-school optimization freak. For example he deducts 10% if he sees: mov ax, 0 instead of: xor ax,ax even if it's only used once. I am not a complete beginner in assembly programing but I'm not an optimization expert, so I need your help in something (might be a very stupid question but I'll ask anyway): if I need to set a register value to 1 or (-1) is it better to use: mov ax, 1 or do something like: xor ax,ax inc ax I really need a good grade, so I'm trying to get it as optimized as possible. ( I need to optimize both time and code size)

• How to sort a list by the 2nd tuple element in python and C#

  I had a list of tuples where every tuple consists of two integers and I wanted to sort by the 2nd integer. After looking in the python help I got this: sorted(myList, key=lambda x: x[1]) which is great. My question is, is there an equally succinct way of doing this in C# (the language I have to work in)? I know the obvious answer involving creating classes and specifying an anonymous delegate for the whole compare step but perhaps there is a linq oriented way as well.   I would like an application which is not readily apparent to casual perusal of the Android. How best to activate it and bring its screen to the fore? Can I detect a special dialing sequence, like *1234#? Or a hotkey combination? When activated, I guess I can pop up an anonymous screen which does not mention the app, but only asks for a password. • Is use of LEAKS instrument still common on 3G iPhone?

  I'm working with an iPhone 3G, and when I'm trying to investigate memory leaks using the LEAKS instrument, my app crashes. It does not crash when LEAKS is not used. I'm making no claim to having a bug-free or non-memory-intensive app here. But I'd like to investigate leaks on an actual device. When I'm running LEAKS it is incredibly slow. Are there still developers working on iPhone 3G? I don't want to be the whiny guy blaming his tools, but I'd also like to be sure the whole dev world hasn't moved on to iPhone 3GS and I'm the only one trying to run both my app and leaks on a 3G. Currently running iOS 4.0 "gold". Snow Leopard dev env with latest XCode.

• virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

  hi i am comletly new to iis and asp.net i am trying to setup bugNET on a godaddy server. i created a virtual directory and once i tried to launch the site i get this error: Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. here is complete detail of what i did. hosting: godaddy created virtual directory (child folder of root) - named: devbunk with these settings (anonymous access, directory browsing) that is all i can do to with iis on godaddy. the error tells me that i need to turn the virtual directory as an application. godaddy doesnt let me do that... how do i do it? btw, i have iis7 setup.

  Hello, I am trying to set up security within a web.config file for a WCF service hosted in IIS but keep getting the error message: Security settings for this service require 'Anonymous' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service. I have read Nicholas Allen’s blog (link text) and it appears that this is the route that I need to take. However, I am using “binaryMessageEncoding” in a customBinding for my Silverlight service, and as such, I’m not sure how to apply this type of security to such an element. This is how my custom binding looks in config at present: <customBinding> <binding name="silverlightBinaryBinding"> <binaryMessageEncoding /> <httpTransport /> </binding> </customBinding> Has anyone had any experience getting Windows authentication to work with a custom binding using binaryMessageEncoding? Somebody, who was working on my code before me, created some method and passed Runnable as parameter, more likely: void myMethod(Runnable runnable){ runnable.run(); } Then calling myMethod out of main looks like: public static void main(String args[]) { try { myMethod(new Runnable(){ public void run() { //do something...; }}); } catch (Throwable t) { } } So, to supply parameter to myMethod I need to instantiate object of (in this case anonymous) class implementing Runnable. My question is: is it necessary to use Runnable in this example? Can I use any different interface? I mean I can create new interface with single method i.e. interface MyInterface{ void doThis(); } then change look of myMethod: void myMethod(MyInterface myObject){ myObject.doThis(); } And of course client too: public static void main(String args[]) { try { myMethod(new MyInterface (){ public void doThis() { //do something...; }}); } catch (Throwable t) { } } Or maybe something is about Runnable?!

  I have just been watching the Stanford iPhone lecture online from Jan 2010 and I noticed that the guy from Apple keeps referring to getting an objects class name using "className" e.g. NSArray *myArray = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"ONE", @"TWO", nil]; NSLog(@"I am an %@ and have %d items", [myArray className], [myArray count]); However, I can't get this to work, the closest I can come up with it to use class, is className wrong, did it get removed, just curious?
