• Software: Launching League of Legends spectator mode from Command Line (Mac)

  Background: tl;dr at the end League of Legends has a spectator mode, in which you can watch someone else's game (essentially a replay) with a 3 minute delay. Popular LoL website OP.GG has figured out a clever way of hosting these spectator games on their own servers, thereby making them replayable, as opposed to only being available while the game is on (as Riot does it). If you request a replay from OP.GG, it sends a batch file which looks for where the League is situated and then the magic happens: @start "" "League of Legends.exe" "8394" "LoLLauncher.exe" "" "spectator fspectate.op.gg:4081 tjJbtRLQ/HMV7HuAxWV0XsXoRB4OmFBr 1391881421 NA1" This works fine on Windows. I'm trying to get it to work on Mac (which has an official client). First I tried running the same command by hand, (split for convenience) /Applications/ ... /LeagueOfLegends.app/ ... /LeagueofLegends 8393 LoLLauncher \ /Applications/ ... /LolClient spectator fspectate.op.gg:4081 tjJbtRLQ/HMV7HuAxWV0XsXoRB4OmFBr 1391881421 NA1 Running this, however, just starts the LoLLauncher, which closes all the active League processes. UserKernel updateandrun lol_launcher LoLLauncher.app is launched first. LoLLauncher is launched by the UserKernel (as we can see from the PPID) The very long command (PID: 24927) is how Spectator mode is launched, and is also launched by UserKernel. Spectator mode is launched in exactly the same way that the OP.GG .bat wanted to, with the only difference that Spectator mode connects to Riot instead of OP.GG's spectate server. I tried attaching GDB to the LolClient, but I couldn't get anything meaningful from it since it's an Adobe AIR application (and I've never used GDB with code other than mine own). Next I ran dtruss -a -b 100m -f -p $PID on everything I could think of: the LolClient, the LolLauncher and the UserKernel and skimmed the half a million lines produced. I found stuff like the GET request used to get the information of the game to spectate, but I could not see any launch of the equivalent of League of Legends.exe with spectator options. Finally, I ran lsof | grep -i lol to see if anything else was opened in the process, but didn't find anything that seemed appropriate. Open were UserKernel, LolLauncher, LolClient, Adobe AIR, LeagueofLegends and then Bugsplat, all of which are expected. None of this seemed especially relevant to figuring out how LeagueofLegends was opened into spectator mode. It obviously can be done, since Spectator mode is accessible from within the client. It seems likely that it can be done from the CLI, since Windows can do it and the clients are supposed to equals. Unless I'm missing something in the difference between how UNIX and Windows handle CLI application launches. My question is if there are any other things I can try to figure out how to launch Spectator mode myself. tl;dr: Trying to get into spectator mode from the CLI. It's possible on Windows (see first code block) but it just restarts League on Mac. What else can I try to find what call is made, and how to reproduce it? PS: Please let me know how I can improve this question or its formatting, I'd love to use StackOverflow/SuperUser, but as the guys said on the podcast this week (Ep. 59) it's very intimidating. • Pin the Dock to the top

  I wonder if it is possible to pin the Mac OS X Dock to the top in Snow Leopard? I see lets of ideas on how to do this when I google for it, and Secrets (the tweaking app) also provide it as an option, but I don't see any of the ways working for me. I guess it must have worked at some point, since people said it did, but I believe this feature might have been removed from Snow Leopard, and therefore does not work for me. Is this so? Is there really no way to pin the Dock to the top of screen? If not, what ways of "getting rid of the dock" can you guys recommend? I have tried with auto-hiding, but my problem is that this will leave a 4px line at the edge of where the Dock is pinned to, that applications wont cover. Thats not ideal for me. As far as I have understood from googling, this line will not appear if the Dock is pinned to the top, hence my question. What other ways do you guys use to get rid of it?

• Running an Automator task at night

  I've just created an Automator workflow and I'm using crontab to execute it at night. The problem is that, after a while, the machine is going to sleep and a password is required (this is the intended behaviour). Unfortunately, Automator seems to be unable to perform the task when the password is required. It works like a charm if the "password required" dialog is not displayed (before the sleep). Any suggestion on how to solve this?

  I just noticed when launching my terminal a message "You have new mail." I would like to know if someone is trying something malicious with my email and name. The mails are all returns from the same server. • man: command not found in zsh (Mac OS 10.58)

  I changed to zsh from the default (by changing the "Shells open with" preference in Terminal to "command (complete path)" set to /bin/zsh While most things seem to work, I tried to see the man page for a command and got a "permission denied" message. When I tried sudo, I got "man: command not found". I changed to the default shell (/bin/tcsh), and this is what I get when I open a new shell: Last login: Fri Nov 18 13:53:50 on ttys000 Fri Nov 18 13:55:21 CST 2011 /usr/bin/manpath: Permission denied. If I try man, I get the same "command not found message". I guess there is something wrong in my PATH, but I have no idea how to fix it. "echo $PATH" (in tcsh) gets: /sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/texbin In zsh, it gets: /usr/bin:/bin:/sw/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/texbin:/usr/X11/bin Any ideas?

• Automator won't change finder item names of photoshop automation exports

  I made a folder action that monitors a folder and changes the name of anything put in it. Then I automate a photoshop action that exports images to the folder. for some reason I have to move the images out of the folder and then back in for it to change. is there a way to have it change the images as they're saved there? is this a bug or am i doing something wrong? it works fine if i just move the images in and out of the folder. and sometimes it will change just a couple of them, which makes me think it's just because they're coming in so fast that it glitches.

• "blue screen" occurs when using VPN

  I am using the VPN client "Tunnelblick" for getting access to the restricted sites of my university. This is working quite fine, until sometime out of a sudden a "blue screen" occurs which is telling me to restart the computer. I am using Mac OS X Lion on a 4,1 MacBook Air. The error report tells me, that the system crashed somewhere during processing the ipconfig thread. Is someone known to this or similar problems with Mac OS X Lion and VPN and has kind of a solution?

• Can I automatically login to ssh using passwords from OS X keychain?

  I need to login to an ssh server which doesn't support key based authentication. And I don't want to type the passwords every time. I am using OS X Lion (10.7.2). I have added the passwords to the OS X keychain[1]. Now I can retrieve the password automatically from the keychain using /usr/bin/security, however I can't find a way to send this password to the ssh prompt. I also tried sshpass. However when I try to run it ssh exits with the following error: ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied (publickey,password). • OS X borked; need to backup outside of Time Machine

  Quick Background: iMac G5 (the white one; 4 years old?) Running Leopard 10.5.something. Time Machine started failing on me; and every time I touch the Finder, things beachball like crazy. Booting from install disk then using Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" also fails. I'm left with the conclusion that I have a corrupt file somewhere important, that's (i) keeping TM from working and (ii) messing with basic functionality. I am not (yet) savvy enough in OS X to know what logs to look in, or how to decipher them - but 'corrupt file' seems to be the likely case, based on my readings of apple.com forum threads. So I think I need to backup, outside of Time Machine, then install fresh OS X on a new drive (or maybe SpinRite the current drive?). I'm able to put a (non-Time Machine) external USB drive on, so I dragged all 3 Users' folders to that... am I done backing up? Am I going to have a massive Permissions problem, trying to put things back together after a re-install? Thanks for reading.

• SSL timeout on some sites, across all browsers, on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  For the past several weeks, I've been receiving "Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out" when I attempt to connect to either Twitter or Paypal via SSL. I get this specific error in Google Chrome, but the same problem occurs in both Safari and Firefox. Other sites work fine, and other computers on my network can access these two sites. I have no firewall settings that would prevent me from accessing these sites over port 443. I notice that both Twitter and Paypal both have "Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL CA" certificates. It is unclear whether this is related to the problem. In an effort to troubleshoot, I attempted to open the test sites referenced on Verisign's root certificate support page, which worked fine. Just to be sure, I downloaded and installed the root package file and installed all included Verisign certificates. No joy. I feel like I've hit a dead end. Any ideas? Update the first: I also cannot connect to FedEx.com, who also has a Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation cert. Update the second: Aaaaaaand it fixed itself. I did nothing. Or, I did something that worked, but in a delayed fashion. Frustrating, but a win is a win. I'll take it.

• Browsing Pictures on a Mac

  Hi. After many years using linux, I decided to buy a mac. Now my main problem is: how do I synchronize pictures within my linux machines and the mac? I have been using digikam in linux, and I like it because I can just browse the pictures directly from my directories (and it is easy for me to keep directories synchronized within mac and linux). I have been testing iphoto and aperture, which are quite nice but if use them, my understanding is that I have to import all the pictures into these softwares, and this doesn't seem to be the ideal solution for me. I tried picasa, but I don't find it as good as iphoto and aperture. On the other hand it allows me to browse directories, without having two copies of the same pictures. I didn't try lightroom yet, would that be a good solution? I would appreciate any suggestion on this. Thanks!

• GeekTool logs "command not found" for commands that work fine in Terminal

  I'm trying to run simple commands so I can have GeekTool output date/time etc. to my desktop. Should be simple enough to do but it never actually outputs anything into the boxes. Console log shows it's getting spammed by GeekTool to say 'command not found', though the same command (e.g. date +"%H:%M") works fine in Terminal. All I want to achieve is the ability to output a clock displaying time/date on my desktop that fits into my wallpaper. I've tried changing the format of the commands, using the built-in editor window as well as the command line box on the Properties tab. I had a look at the permissions in '/' (because GeekTool runs commands from there) and nothing unusual comes up. None of these solved the issue. When I use a command that simply echo's a string it works (e.g. echo "hello" displays the word hello). Does anyone have experience with GeekTool, and understand why it won't run basic commands? As I say, it's spamming my console with 'command not found' despite them working in terminal... Running OS X 10.6.6 on a MacBook Pro (mid-2010).

• Mac OS X 10.6.3 update freezes mouse - Is there a solution?

• How to Re-install an App that Shows up in the Appstore as 'Update' Instead of 'Buy App'

  So long story short: I dropped the wrong app into 'clean my mac' and I hit 'cancel' but it was too late by that point. I rebooted and appstore said it had an update, when I opened appstore it was showing an update for the app I just uninstalled. I tried clicking 'update' but it gives me an error saying it's unable to install after 'downloading'. When I try to go into 'purchased apps' it shows the app as uninstalled so I click 'install' and I get an error saying it's already installed. I'm running Lion OS X, latest version, updated, mac book pro is only a few months old. I tried searching through the entire system to remove all traces of the app, after rebooting appstore no longer shows the app and no longer shows the update but on the apps page it still says 'Update'. I tried reinstalling the app from desktop OUT of the appstore and again says the app is 'already installed'. So after reading more about lion I found an article that spoke about 'BundleID' being the thing that tells appstore what's installed and needing updating however I can't find the location of where the BundleID would be. Any thoughts? I've tried CCleaner, AppCleaner etc and none of them show the app, mainly because it is uninstalled. Update I've spoken to Apple Support who confirmed that there is a file in the system that connects separately to tell the system if there are updates available however they declined to inform me of any further details. Apple also referred me from technical support to iTunes App Store opposed to Mac App Store support and from there I have been referred to AppleCare who are currently 'investigating' this issue. Hopefully there will be a fix that's simple to implement for people having similar issues, this appears to be a more common issue than I previously thought.

• Compress a folder of PDF files into separate zip archives

  I wanted to take a folder full of PDF files and create a number of separate zip files, after following the advice on this question everything worked *almost*perfectly. Here's what happened: When I issued this command in Terminal: zip -s 5m -r ~/Desktop/invoices ~/Desktop/Invoices/ Everything worked really well, in that I got 11 ZIP files of approximately 5 MB each; placed in the folder specified. However, the files they outputted were named as follows: invoices.z01 invoices.z02 invoices.z03 invoices.z04 invoices.z05 invoices.z06 invoices.z07 invoices.z08 invoices.z09 invoices.z10 invoices.zip So as you can see only invoices.zip has been named correctly. I could go through and rename them one by one, but seriously, if we start doing that then what in the name of Evolution are computers for?! Now, I am also aware that I'm relatively new to the Terminal; so I could be making a very silly mistake somewhere. If that's the case, please be patient :-) Any help would be greatly appreciated. One last note: I'm quadriplegic so I would like to avoid GUI applications as much as possible, I use voice recognition software you see this working in the Terminal is much much easier.
